Problems connecting my MacBook Pro to an external monitor

For the past 2 years, I have regularly connected my MacBook Pro to an external monitor (Dell SR2320L) using a VGA cable. When I do so, the picture  automatically comes up in the maximum resolution of the external monitor (1920 x 1080). However, just in the past few weeks, the picture on my external monitor automatically comes up in 1600 x 1200 instead.  When I click on the display menu in the upper right corner of my screen, there isn't even an option for 1920 x 1080 anymore.  I've tried restarting my computer and even unplugging and replugging in the cable, but nothing seems to fix the problem. However, on at least some occasions, the problem seems to fix itself after about a day or so of use, and the picture reverts back to 1920 x 1080. I should note a couple of things: when I connect another MacBook to my monitor, the display automatically comes up in 1920 x 1080. And when I connect my Macbook to a different display, I have the same problem as I have with my display. So I think the issue is definitely with my computer, not my monitor. Does anyone have a suggestion about how to solve this problem? Or, when the problem arises, is there anything I can do to reset the display to 1920 x 1080 other than waiting for the problem to fix itself? Any suggestions woudl be greatly appreciated!

Hi bonfig,
If you are having issues with the external display settings on your MacBook Pro, it may be worth going throught the following article, in particular the portion about resetting the SMC and PRAM:

  • Connect my macbook pro to 2 external monitors

I want to connect my macbook pro up to 2 external monitors.  Anyway to do this?

Yes the power cable from the monitor 1( apple thdb) goes into the laptop and the monitor 1 (apple) to the Lacie and then a short HDMI /Thuderbolt to the Monitor 2 and the lacie and it powered up ok .
I had  tried earlier to daisy to Monitor 2 (acer) off the Monitor 1 apple but that did not work and was surprised when it worked off the Lacie.
The only issue is that I try and switch off Monitor 2 first and properly eject the lacie before powereing off the laptop if that makes sense but there is an apple script to do this which I am going to try

  • Trying to connect my Macbook Pro with an external Monitor - Using VGA - DVI

    Hi Everyone..
Please dont classify me as dumb but every-time i need to connect my MBP to an external monitor or projector i cant
It just doesn't work... I plug it in using all the right connectors - DVI-VGA or the other way around... Anyway - i get a blue screen which tricks me... =]
After the blue screen i go straight to the page i was on before connecting the monitor...! =[
Anyway.. are there any settings i need to adjust.... =]
If there is anything that you guys know of please inform me because i am in need to use a Monitor frequently but so far i havn't been able to do it seen as though i don't know what to do.. Ive watched tutorials and have done exactly what they've told me but it still wont display anything on the external monitor. Ive used 2 MBP's - Both i've had issues with connecting them to an external display. i know its only a minor change i need to make in System preferences but i dont know which one it is...
Please - if you know please please please tell me what it is.! =]
    Thanks alot!
    Carl... =]

I assume that you mean the blue screen is on your monitor, not your MBP. If this is the case, go to system preferences and click on displays, when the pop up box appears, click on "detect displays". See if that helps.

Why is it that when I plug my Macbook Pro to an external monitor, the external monitor turns black and shows the mouse only

Hi, yes preferences sees there is a second display it recognises what make of monitor it is etc but I just get a blank blue screen on the monitor when I change it to the hdmi setting! I have tried with mirroring on and off, rearranging the displays in the preference window and lots of different resolution settings but with no difference.
An old MacBook connects fine so the monitor and hdmi port must be okay. I'm sure we have used the cable before but it could have been with the previous MacBook Air. The current one I'm using is a mid 2011 version running lion and is (according to software update) all up to date.
Any thoughts or help would be appreciated!

  • MacBook Pro to my external monitor

How do I hook up my MacBook Pro to my external monitor if I don't have an HDMI connection or a DVI connection port on my laptop?

Of course! some of the adapters can be purchased at best buy but are usually kind of expensive. I saw an HDMI adapter at Home Depot the other day for $7 which is a good deal.
Although, im not even sure if youre in the U.S., so this information be irrelevant to you anyway haha.

  • How can connect my Macbook Pro to a TV Monitor ?

How can i connect my MacBook Pro to a TV monitor other way than 15 pin cable ?

I would check out Monoprice. I bought this cable for my late 2011 MBP - it attaches to a Thunderbolt or Mini DisplayPort and then out to HDMI. It's just a small adapter - under $7 - and worked quite well for me. You'll have to get a HDMI cable of your desired length to work with it. I also suggest using Monoprice for HDMI cables - they've excellent quality and low prices.

have a problem with my MacBook Pro.5,3 and monitor.  Intermittently, the desk top screen becomes broken up into vertical sections, which appear in the wrong order, creating a haphazard picture.
The Apple icon, usually at top left corner, appears in top right corner  in a strip including all that left hand.  When the computer is restarted, the screen goes back to normal.  But I have to move the mouse to the far left of the screen and then up until it reappears on the far right hand side of the screen so that I can hit shut down button.
It seems to happen randomly though always on desk top and sometimes when I move mouse and computer switches on from rest mode.   My large flat screen is relatively new.
The video card on this computer, which is approximately two years old, is Nvidia FeForce 9400M.
Any help would be welcome as my usual source of assistance is not available and I am not well versed in workings of the Mac although I have used one for many years.

That sounds like a Hardware problem.
You may be able to confirm that with Apple Hardware Test, or make an appointmenst for a free Genius Bar evaluation.

  • Can I use MacBook pro A1211 with external monitor, screen has died but

CCan I use MacBook pro A1211 with external monitor, screen has died but computer seems fine

Hmm seems like this model has DVI out. You could just plug a standard DVI monitor into that. Or use the DVI connector (VGA supported with included adapter; S-video and composite video supported with optional adapters) adapter that came w/ your machine.

  • Problems connecting my macbook pro to my samsung led Tv

Hi. I try to present some pictures and videos by connecting my macbook pro to my samsung led Tv but my mac doesn't recognize the Tv (or it could be that my TV doesn't recognize the mac). What should I do?

I have problems too with some projectors and the DVI--VGA adapter that came with my MBP. The projector is recognized by the computer, but does not show any signal.
With the help of Stéphane Madrau, who has written the excellent tool SwitchResX, I found out that the projector reports that it takes digital input when I connect the MacBook Pro, but analog when I connect it to my 12" PBG4. From the DDC information (collected with SwitchResX):
    MacBook Pro, DVI--VGA:
    Input signal & sync:
    Digital
    PBG4, miniDVI--VGA:
    Input signal & sync:
    Analog input with: 0.700V / 0.300V
    Separate Sync
    Composite Sync
Given that the VGA cable is analog only, I would think that the MBP tries (or rather, does) output digital signals only, which don't make it into the VGA cable. If I find a solution I will post it here.
The clue was that the computer did not report any vertical scan frequencies for the external display, while it did so for a projector that worked.

  • Problems connecting my  MacBook Pro to a video projector

I have a MacBook Pro. I have used it many times to connect to a video projector and give presentations in my classroom. Lately, it is hit or miss concerning whether the laptop will give a signal to the computer. I can't figure out what I am doing wrong. I have followed the instructions in the MacBook guide.(Start with projector and laptop off, connect, turn on, etc. )
I am using the DVI to VGA adapter. I have also tried to use the function keys and manually tried to get it to detect displays. Can't think of what to do next. I gave up and hooked up a Windows computer and it worked.
Could it be the adapter? Does anyone have any ideas I can try? Thanks!

  • Problem connecting my macbook pro to a wired internet connection via ethernet cable adapter

I am having a problem connecting my macbook to a wired internet connection in an area in my workplace where there is no wifi.  The macbook works fine on the same internet connection via wifi in other parts but when I add it as a wired connection it doesn't show any connection.  I have turned off wifi to make sure that it is not trying to pick up a poor connection but I still can't get this to work.  I think I am trying to set up the connection properly but can't be completely sure.  Any help would be appreciated.

Open System Preferences>Network and make sure Ethernet is selected. If it is, open Advanced Settings (at the bottom of the Network window). Click on the TCP/IP tab. Configure IPv4 should be set to "Using  DHCP".
Configure IPv6 should be set to "Automatically". When those are set click the "Renew DHCP Lease" button

Thanks for your help What about a HDMI to VGA cable? Would this work?
Where would you find one of those? Never heard of that. That is not to say they don't exist. Why would you want to try that? That would mean you are taking a digital signal, converting it to analog, then converting it back to digital.
Stick with the common methods as I described. Tell us if your monitor has HDMI or DVI inputs and I can be more specific as to what cable to use.

  • MacBook Pro Displayport and External Monitor

My early 2011 MacBook Pro is connected to a Dell U2412M monitor via a minidisplaport to displayport cable.
If I disconnect the MacBookPro from the power cable (run on battery power alone), the monitor loses power. The monitor is plugged in to the same power strip. Unplugging the monitor's power cable causes the monitor to lose power as well. The monitor's USB ports do not appear to work in either scenario.
Is this expected behavior with this setup or do I need to consider an alternative means to connect the MacBook Pro to the monitor? I'd like to use the monitor's USB ports, but my primary goal is to not have to have the monitor and MacBook Pro connected to a power strip in order to have the monitor display work.
    Thanks in advance.

Yes, min Displayport supports audio and video for the 2011 MBP 13" via HDMI.
