Problems connecting to Wi-Fi network via 3G and 3Gs (due to modal view?)

I am trying to connect to a protected network via Wi-Fi using two different devices - a 3G (running 3.0) and a 3Gs. This is a corporate network and is only allowed to visit certain websites that are closed off to the outside world. I don't know the exact type of network configuration, but I am unable to connect to sites such as Google, apple.com, etc.
In both cases, when I choose the network in the settings app, I first see an activity indicator that clues me in to a connection being established. Then, after a moment a modal view slides up that is titled "Log In", and according to the text above the title it is going to http://www.apple.com As said above, if this is truly the case it would be a problem for me since I can't visit apple.com. So I see an error page served up by my network, and I am disconnected.
Why is this even going to apple.com? Is the modal view some kind of new feature? Is there anyway to disable it? Note that I am not having this problem using an iPhone 3G or iPod Touch using 2.2.1

• Problems connecting to a Open Network via Wi-fi on Cisco Router

Hi everyone, I know I'm new here but I'm in need of your help, so if you can assist please do so as I cannot live without wi-fi and might have to go back to my nokia again if I can't sort this out.
Vodafone finally released the Iphone on their network in Ireland today and I've picked a 3gs up straight away.
At work I have a wi-fi network with a CISCO router (I have no access to the router as only IT do and they won't change anything to satisfy me and my Iphone anyways). This network has no encryption whatsoever and its free to join, you don't need any password or anything. My nokia at the start couldn't connect as it said that the network needed a pre shared key, this isn't true and in the end it was just change a setting to no auth required for it to log into the network and work perfectly.
Today I got to work and the Iphone can't connect to the network, just says it can't join the network. I cannot find anything about authentication on the settings of the phone nor can I work around this at all. I've had a Ipod touch for (the 2nd gen) for over 2 years and I gave up trying to set it up at work because I just couldn't find what was wrong with it, I ended up almost not using it other than when traveling or on the gym.
So first question is there any way I can access the authentication settings for wi-fi connections on the Iphone? Maybe its just a little change that is needed like the nokia.
Has anyone experienced this problem on a open network that they cannot join?
Any other sugestions? Anything really?
Thank you very much for your time guys, I would really really appreciate your help on this.
Regards,
Rod
PS: I've also tried to install the Iphone configuration utility however I don't know how to access the profiles on the phone, anyone can help with this so I can try the profile I've created?
I don't think it is going to work because the options available on the configuration utility are basicly the same available on the Iphone itself.
Anyone has any sugestion on how to solve this problem??? Thanks very much.

• When iBooks has a problem connecting to a wifi network, it hangs and the page goes blank

i use the books I have in iBooks as study aids, a lot. I find that when I am in the vicinity of a new or busy wifi network that the page or bookshelf just goes blank, I have to switch wifi off and restart the app, then it works again. It is most annoying though.

Reboot router, make sure it's up to date. If on wifi try ethernet. Make sure DNS is set to automatic (settings - general - network).

My MacBook Air has problems connecting to a saved network when I first open it. When it idles, the connection gets lost and even clicking on the network won't connect it. Then I have to turn off wireless and turn it back on for it to connect. My boyfriend's MacBook Pro does not have this same problem and this problem started maybe 2 months ago and nothing about our internet or router has changed, and its only my computer having the problem. Its a 2013 MacBook Air and my softward is: OS X 10.9.1 (13B42). Please help!

Hello, nheredia05.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
There are a couple steps that I could recommend trying. Power cycle the router and test to see if the behavior persists. Next, try an remove this prefered network from your list and then add it back again. Make sure all firmware updates have been processed on the router side and the settings have been optimized for performance. If the issue still persists try the steps in the second article.

• Hidden network drives "home" and "net" shown in folder view Adobe Bridge CS5 / Lion Problem

Updated to Mac OS X 10.7.2 Lion and got this "problem":
The hidden network drives "home" and "net" shown in folder view Adobe Bridge CS5 (unlike in 10.6 Snow Leopard).
Normally these network drives are hidden (in Finder and other Apps) - but Adobe Bridge CS5 is showing them, despite "show hidden files" is unchecked in Adobe Bridge.
Not a dramatic "bug", but it also shouldn't be a big problem for Adobe Bridge engineers to solve this. My first question to the Adobe Support was answered like: "we don't know what Apple did change, so we cannot do anything". Hmmm, are you serious?
I tried to resolve that problem by myself but failed. So, if an Adobe engineer is reading this post: perhaps Adobe Bridge is ignoring the automounter master map (that was my approach to resolve it):
# Automounter master map
+auto_master                    # Use directory service
/net           -hosts                 -nobrowse,hidefromfinder,nosuid
/home                                        auto_home       -nobrowse,hidefromfinder
/Network/Servers               -fstab
/-                              -static
You cannot do anything to these folders, so it is not a serious issue, but, I mean, did someone at Adobe check compatibiliy with 10.7 and ignored this issue? If so, are there an other issues ignored?
But I guess, the compatibilty update for Bridge CS5 for Lion is Bridge CS6 - to be fair: I also have to say, that in general Bridge is running okay on Mac OS X 10.7.2 (but could be better, as always;)

Hi Curt Y,
thanks for your answer! Yes you' re right, I forgot to mention that ... before I posted here, I sent a bug report via the Apple Bug Report webpage about the issue ... of course, here are 2 parties involved.
I had a similiar problem once and I got a meesage back from Apple: "that it is a 3rd party problem, sorry" (it was about color management).
I am just a user and I often feel very strange about Apple's (topsecret) communication behaviour ... Whatever, what do I know about software engineering? - Right.
Maybe someone on this forum has an idea, because I'm afraid, thus it is not a serious bug, no one would take care about it in the next time (during my research I found an older post here on the forum about the same problem ...).
thanks for help in advance,
jobumac

• Is it possible to connect a mac book pro via thunderbolt and a dvi switchbox (multiple computers) to a thunderbolt display?

Hi,
I'm planning to buy a thunderbolt display.Since I have not only apple computers with a thunderbolt port I wonder if it's possible to connect my mac book pro via thunderbolt and a DVI switchbox via a "mini displayport to DVI connector" to the thunderbolt display at the same time. Thunderbolt is a bus architecture. Thus there must be an ingoing and an outgoing port on the display. The rearview of the display I've seen so far don't show this:
If this is not possible then I must question the market chances of this product. Seems as if the product marketing guys exaggerated the launch of the thunderbolt technology.

ais-swiss wrote:
How to connect windows laptop (vga) to thunderbolt display?
AHHH??!!!!!! Was that your original question?? I assumed you were trying to output FROM your computer (MacBook Pro w/ Thunderbolt) to the new display and then OUT to be the video source to a DVI switcher.
MB Pro w/TB ---> TB Display ---> mDP-to-DVI adapter ---> DVI switcher
So it seems as if it's not possible to use the thunderbolt display with the mini display port adapter to DVI you've mentioned.
I did not understand that you were trying to use other PC's into a switcher and then THAT Video source to connect INTO the TB display. If THAT is what you're trying to do, then NO.... You can NOT use the new TB Display to be used to display "FROM" a DVI switcher (and also can NOT be used to display from other Non-TB-Apple computers).
I've also called apple. The statement was that one needs a computer with osx 10.6.x in order to connect the thunderbolt display. That makes it impossible to hook a windows pc or older mac to the new and shiny thunderbolt display.
I wonder why apple doesn't state this in their technical descriptions...?
-ais-swiss
Actually, the state that information all over the Tech Specs on the Apple Store website.
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC914LL/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY
Here are two different statements from that webpage:
So yes.... other NON-Apple PC's (or non-TB devices) do Not have the Thunderbolt technology (hardware/software) to be able to communicate with the TB display or other TB devices.

• Problem connecting laptop to wireless network

Greetings.
I recently installed ArchLinux on my asus N80Vb laptop. I downloaded the .iso for the core installation and burn a CD which I used to install. Checksums were a match. I followed instructions on the installation guide and everything seems to have been a success. I installed all packages which seemed to have anything to
do with wireless networking.
The only problem is that I am having difficulty getting my laptop to connect to the wireless network in the house.
The network wireless interface in the laptop is an Intel WiFi Link 5100. I am assuming the driver is loading properly: output from dmesg | tail is:
iwlagn 0000:03:00.0: Unable to find TIM Element in beacon
wlan0: Selected IBSS BSSID 2e:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx based on configured SSID
iwlagn 0000:03:00.0: Unable to find TIM Element in beacon
(the x's in the second line are because I wasn't sure if it was a good idea to post the actual numbers).
I followed the manual wireless setup process here to try to establish a connection and couldn't connect: trying to ping www.google.com gave an unknown host error.
I have netcfg and created a configuration file with the following:
CONNECTION='wireless'
DESCRIPTION='wireless internet connection
INTERFACE='wlan0'
SCAN='yes'
SECURITY='none'
ESSID='mynetwork'
IP='dhcp'
CHANNEL='6'
When trying to use netcfg I get "Wireless network "mynetwork" not present. [FAIL]
Using iwlist doesn't show mynetwork either, but I know its there because all the PCs, a wii and another laptop are all connected to it without any problems.
(I added CHANNEL='6' because my PC running Fedora shows that it is connected to mynetwork on channel 6, so I thought maybe...).
Connecting via a wired connection is also a possibility but would prefer not to.
Any suggestions?
Regards,
Topaz

• Problem connecting to a wireless network

I am using 'Aztech' wifi router/ADSL modem for wireless network at my home. I had been connecting fine with the internet using it until yesterday, when, after a software update, I have been unable to connect to the network (I can access it with my wife's laptop, an acer running windows XP). I tried reconfiguring the connection, reconfiguring the settings of the wifi router and even reinstalling the software, but without any positive results.
The current situation is: I can see the network in the list but when I try to connect using the correct password, I keep getting the message "There was an error joining the Airport network '(Network Name)'".
(I have no problem connecting via the cable)
Help me out please...
Mac Book 2.0 GHz Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I had the same problem with my Macbook after the update. It will no longer connect to my router using WPA-PSK authentication. It did work for me after changing my security settings back to using WEP authentication.
I have not been able to figure out the reason for this but this may help get your Macbook back on the internet for now.

• Problem with creating an Infrastructure Network (via Access Point) for WLS 9163.

Hi,
I am trying to connect the WLS 9163 to an Infrastructure Network (via an Access Point). I have connected it via an Ethernet cable and am using MAX to configure it.
The setting are as below:
Obtain IP Address through: DHCP
Country: US
Radio On: Yes
SSID: wireless (selected from drop down implying the wireless network is detected)
Wireless Mode: Infrastructure
Authentication: Open
After doing these settings, I click on Save Settings. The device reboots itself and takes the IP address, Subnet mask and default Gateway automatically. The WLS link LED on the device is also turned on. The System State is 'Connected' and both the Wired and Wireless Connection Status is shown as 'UP'.
So far so good.
Now if I remove the wired connection and refresh the device, it does not get connected via wireless (which I believe it ideally should). The System State is shown as Disconnected.
I am using a Phoenix Contact WAP and have set the authentication as Open.
Please suggest some solution.

I had this exact same problem and it took me a while to figure out. As strange as this sounds, I figured out that for some reason if I had the WLS-9163 too close to the router and I pulled the wired connection, the wireless connection could drop. I read on a post in a different forum about someone removing their antenna and it working just fine so I tried that and it worked off and on but mostly off. So I figured out that the further distance away I was the better the connection stability was and I got far enough away from the router to where it was a steady solid wireless connection. This sounds really backwards from what it should be and was really bizarre but I tried different routers, used all different types of settings, had the latest firmware and had all of the equipment sitting on my desk and could not get it working once I removed the wired connection. This may not solve your problem but this worked for me so I thought I'd share that info. I was just so shocked to figure out being too close to the router seemed to be screwing my stuff up.

• Connecting to existing home network via Airport Express

I had my Macbook Pro connected to our home router which allowed me access to our home network and the internet. On this network we had connected both my MBP and my flatmates PC (which is connected directly to the router via network cable).
Through this configuration i was able to both access the internet AND access files on the PC. I have recently purchased and airport express to eliminate the need for the network cord. Since setting up the AE i have been able to connect to the internet no problem by creating a wireless network and using all the automatic settings, however in the process i have lost my ability to connect to the home network and my flatmates computer. In fact, under "networks" in finder the home network has disappeared. Also in network prefences i am getting a warning saying "The cable for Ethernet is not plugged in".
Is anyone able to tell me what im doing wrong?
thanks ....

The problem is that the AirPort Express (AX) is creating a subnet.
To prevent that, configure the AX to act as a bridge (so that it is NOT sharing a single IP address).

• Cannot connect devices using Extend Network via Ethernet

Hi
I have been going nuts with this issue, and cannot seem to find any solutions. PLEASE HELP!
I have an Airport Extreme (pretty new and all up to date) connected to my modem. Everything works perfectly. The wi-fi is great, all devices can connect without any issues so nothing is wrong here. The Airport extreme is dishing out the IP addresses etc. The Airport extreme is in the lounge.
I purchased a new airport express yesterday. I put it in my study, far away from the lounge. I connected the airport extreme to the airport express using an ethernet cable. I plugged it in, and set it up to extend the wireless network via ethernet. I.e. it is set up in bridged mode and set up to 'create a wireless network' with identical name password etc. Everything is good. It reboots and the light is green. in the Airport utility everything shows up correctly.
Here is the problem., The second that any device (lets say iphone) moves from the lounge to the study, and tries to 'jump' to the stronger network provided by the express, it kills the ENTIRE network. The following happens:
1. The iphone loses wi-fi signal immediately. If I go into wi-fi settings, it sees my netwrok with FULL strength, but just remains in the 'spinning ball' state trying to connect. Seems to me that the express is unable to hand out an IP address or something.
2. If i open the airport utility on my Imac (in the study), the airport extreme has a yellow warning light and cannot be found via ethernet OR wi-fi. (The Imac is also Hard Wired from the Airport extreme in the lounge).
THe whole system requires a re-boot in order to work again.
If I re-boot the system, and leave a device near the airport express, it immediately receives signal, gets an IP address, and has an internet connection. Going back to the lounge causes no issues, it doesnt drop signal and still connects to the internet via the extreme. But as soon as I walk back into the study again - BOOM, everything drops.
I only purchased the new express because i was having EXACTLY the same issue with an older Airport extreme. No matter what I do, it just wont work via ethernet. I have tried all manner of settings. The ONLY setting that seems to work is to extend the wi-fi network. However, the rooms are too far apart, and this will require a third station in the middle, which i want to avoid (by the time the wifi network is extended across 3 decvices it is too slow).

Can I use airport express to make my pc pick up the wifi by plugging the pc into the ethernet socket?
Yes. But, it is the AirPort Express that would "pick up the wifi". Then, you would connect an Ethernet cable from the AirPort Express to the PC.
Configure the AirPort Express to "Join a wireless network" and click the option to "Enable Ethernet clients" during the setup to activate the Ethernet port on the device.
I would also plug a printer (currently connected to the pc) into the usb, so it can become a shared printer.
There is a good chance that your printer will work connected this way, but you won't really know until you try.

• Connect MacBook to wifi network via Ethernet

I am looking for a way to connect my MacBook to my wifi network via my Ethernet port. I'm not having any trouble with the wifi but am looking at getting an apple tv and wish to be able to use wolan. As far as I know, wowlan is only available using the apple airport routers. Is there something I can get that plugs into my Ethernet port on my MacBook, connects to the wifi network and lets my MacBook treat it as a wired connection so I can use wolan? I assume something like this would. E cheaper than buying an apple router that supports wowlan...?
Also, how do I make sure that my current router actually supports wolan?
Thanks.

We assume that you are trying to configure the AirPort Express to "join" your wireless network. In order to do so, you must enter in the wireless network name, exact type of security and password that your network is using.
Mistakes are often made with the security settings because different manufacturers use different nomenclature to mean the same thing. For example
WPA2 Personal on Apple = WPA2-PSK-AES on other wireless routers
or
WPA/WPA2 Personal on Apple = WPA-PSK-TKIP on other wireless routers
Can you dig a bit deeper into your settings on your router to find out whether you are using AES or TKIP? Once you find that info, you should be able to match up the correct setting on the AirPort Express during the configuration.
Don't be fooled by the the message that you see when you click Update during the configuration process. The message states something to the effect that the settings have been stored successfully on the AirPort Express. What it doe not tell you is whether the settings that were stored are the correct settings.
