Problems creating a 2-D array

Question

This does not work. It throws an exception. Looks like the problem is when creating the jdoubleArray. After the second iteration of i,
jdoubleArray colArray = env->NewDoubleArray(colLength); seems to be empty.

long colLength = 10;
jclass doubleArraysClass = env->FindClass("java/lang/Double");
jmethodID mid = env->GetMethodID(doubleArraysClass, "<init>", "(D)V");
jobjectArray result = env->NewObjectArray(rowLength, doubleArraysClass, NULL);
for(int i = 0; i < rowLength; i++){
jdoubleArray colArray = env->NewDoubleArray(colLength);
jdouble* array = (jdouble*)malloc(colLength * sizeof(jdouble));
for(int j = 0;j < colLength; j++){
double val = 10.5;
array[j] = val;
env->SetDoubleArrayRegion(colArray, 0, colLength, array);
env->SetObjectArrayElement(result, i, colArray);
free(array);
return result;

I know jack all about JNI, but intuition tells me thatjclass doubleArraysClass = env->FindClass("java/lang/Double");
jobjectArray result = env->NewObjectArray(rowLength, doubleArraysClass, NULL);will make result of type Double[] not Double[][]
I don't know what you'd do but i think it's something like "[java/lang/Double"
