Problems creating bass tab in score editor...

Trying to write some bass tab directly into the score editor for printing out later. First thing I created was a bassline that's only on the low E. When I did the 5th fret A Logic kept putting the note to the open third string A. I fixed that in the tab layout section by setting the A1 pitch to A2 and the note now goes to the 5th fret A like I want.
But in the next measure I want a B5 bassline on the 7th fret/4th string and 9th fret/3rd string, B and F#. I can get the B no problem, but Logic is forcing the F# to the 14th fret/4th string note instead of the 9th fret/3rd string I want. I've tinkered with changing pitches in the guitar tab layout, but nothing is getting me an F# on the 9th fret/3rd string. Any ideas?
I wish I could do this in in Finale Notepad, but as far as I can tell, I can't do hammer on/pull off symbols unless I buy the upgrade...things I need to do in the THIRD measure!

I am sorry to have to say that importing scores was not the reason for MIDI, it is for the MIDI editor only. There is a NEW system now called XML and it can transfer scores and midi, but Logic can only open XML files from SoundtrackPro, Other sequencers,[ Cubase5 ] say they can safely transfer scores but I haven't tried it yet. There is a reply in this forum marked !solved! from me to someone else in which I falsely claim that logic CAN import xml,I was wrong, dig deeper and you will find that the choices for importing are MIDI, ,OMF, Open TL, and AAF, I haven't found any info on what AAF can do, but the other two are only for audio files only. I don't remember Finale exporting AAF so no joy there. Happy searching.

  • Problem viewing .mid files in Score Editor

    Help please!
    Used Finale several years ago before I upgraded to OS 10 and Logic 7.2 Express. I recently opened one of my .mid files from Finale and it played back fine but when I tried to see the score in the Score Editor it was altered and only some of the notes were visible - even though they all played and were obviously "there" using other views such as Matrix or Event Editors!
    (The score in question still displays perfectly in Finale - the keyboard part in question has some large chord blocks that "build" but the build doesn't show in Score Editor - but the notes are "there and playing" - but it makes it hard to edit or follow in Score Editor.
    Before I go back into Finale for my notation/writing needs, I'd like to know if there is a way to bring these files into Logic "on all levels"- including the Score Editor - or is this a bug?
    Thanks in advance for the insight into the compatibilities or lack thereof between the two programs -

    There are many (read--jillions!) of options available within the score editor. When you open a score window on the midi sequence at hand first look at the inspector panel on the left side of the screen.
    The first be-triangled panel has a "syncopation" option. Toggle that and see what it does. Read the manual for how it decides what to do here. More importantly note your Quantize toggle there. This quantize is not for how the sequence sounds, but how it displays. Change it one of the more likely defaults 16,24 and you'll get one level of precision. Set it to 8,12 and you'll get another. Set it to 4 and you get nothing but quarter notes and half-notes.
    Read the manual for the myriad details, but hacking through the options may get you to what you intended.
    You should likely read up on "overlap" to see what kind of roadblocks it is or isn't providing.

    Can you tell what that function module is doing?
    You are probably going to have to define a variable as type hex with a value that is equal to the hex value of the TAB (maybe like '09') and pass that through the function module (may have to move it through a character(1) type field as well.

  • TAB key for lyrics in score editor not working anymore!

    I have been editing music for score printing in LOGIC for ever. Suddenly the TAB key won't take me to the next note, but finishes the inputting. I never get beyond the first syllable! I have even disabled the key command for TAB in other editors to make sure they don't clash - but no change. Can anyone help?

    Have you tried without memory card to se if same result in case of possible corruption?

  • Score Editor- Create Multi-Bar Repeat

    I'm transcribing pop songs with a lot of 8 bar repeats. How can I insert a multiple bar repeat symbol into my score? I only see the 1 and 2 bar repeat symbols and I can't even really get those to work for me either.

    Indeed - this is something I have really missed in the Logic Score editor for basic arrangements of pop/jazz etc
    It is very common to have a multi bar repeat which is not just 1 or 2 bars - 4 bar & 8 would be especially useful in many situations where there is a groove going and you just need a drummer or bass player to keep a chord progression or riff that is obvious.
    It would enable one to reduce the number of pages for the part
    PS Just to add - notwithstanding Ski's helpful input - that what is need is the capacity to do fill in an actually number above the bars where the two bar repeat is. This very common convention of arrangers is just not available in Logic - and it should be.
    If you take Guy's example above, it would mean you could condense the part and not have loads and loads of repeated 2 bar segments. And also ...
    .. you would not want to add extra repeat signs etc because you would want the other instrument parts ( ie with more complicated content melody lines perhaps) to be longer - and have the same repeat signs on each part.
    In other words, the rhythm section is playing a groove which repeats and the soloist or other instruments are doing other stuff on top of it.
    It is in rhythm section parts that I really miss the capacity to add numbers above the repeated two bar sign
    Hope this makes sense

  • Notes between Bass clef and Treble clef in Score Editor?

    I'm trying to enter the notes between the Bass clef and Treble clef in the Score Editor, but Logic's defaut settings won't allow it.
    Basically I need to enter the notes C, D, E and F, right above the bass clef. Technically speaking I would need 2 more ledger lines on top of the Bass clef.
    Please help.

    Hi,
    set the bass clef to another MIDI channel. Maybe treble MIDI ch 1, bass MIDI ch2. Now select the notes you want to show up in the bass clef and change their channel to 2.
    In the Notation Edtor, select CTRL-ALT-CMD-S. There you can edit the properties of each separate staff. Scroll to the right: The "easy" way is to set another split point between bass and treble clef. The other way is to assign separate channels.

  • How do you draw a tie of two notes in the score editor window

    How do you draw a simple tie in the score editor window of Logic Pro 10 ; two quarter notes together, an eighth up-beat accross a bar line into the next measure etc? I can't find the answer in videos, help manual.  Please give a step by step how to do it.
    It's hard to believe that a program like Logic, that has more information than the New York Public Library, does not have a simple solution for tieing notes. Maybe Logic XI will have one, or "Logicians" can speak to Sibelius for a more "note-worthy" way to solving the problem so that the score editor can be more accessible for editing purposes for those that read and write manuscript. Lew Traver

    Hi
    Ties are generally automatically created as necessary. Simply adjust the length of the note in the Score (using DurationBars or the Inspector), or in the Piano Roll or Event list.

  • Score editor: command z, bug?

    hi,
    I have a score with different time signatures: 3/8, 4/4, 7/7, 5/16, etc.
    Every time I press command+Z logic erases nearly all of my time signatures (and the last action I wanted to "undo" it isn't of course the addition of the time signatures logic erases )
    Is it a bug?
    thanks

    Hi Ko be
    I just tried opening in L8 an L7 song which has several key signature changes 4/4 to 7/4 to 4/3 and Command + Z doesnt erase them...
    I would be pretty sure that your problem is one of those bugs which occurs from a corruption within a Logic 8 document.. but is not a 'generic' L8 defect.
    L8 score editor - although improved in some ways - has driven me nuts with really simple weird bugs which L7 never used to do .. eg:
    • clicking on a chord symbol ( to bring up the box for editing different elements root/bass note etc) sometimes takes ages to activate - or when it does then the whole part disappears and you are left with a grey page which says " there is nothing in the score editor"
    • another intermittent bug is rubber banding a group of chord symbols to cut and paste simple, or drag alter alignment - just does not not work and the chords dont let themselves be selected and go into flashing mode. This is unbelievably irritating especially when you are expecting something so simple to work as before
    • the other method of selecting - holding shift and clicking on chord symbols to select a group doesnt work
    All this kind of stuff intermittent... ie you never know which Logic Song it is going to start behaving badly in
    all best

  • Ties, Durations, And Volumes In Score Editor

    I am trying to tie two notes of different pitch, using the method of extending the duration of a first note to lap over the second. While this produces a tie and an extended or (sort of) legato sound if the notes are the same pitch, and produces a proper graphic tie in the score editor, it does not do this when I attempt to tie two notes of different pitches. In that case, a tie is produced by the Score Editor, but the extended duration first note is duplicated in the second note position, along with the original second note—so three notes tied! Clearly this is not what I want. It occurred to me that this method of extending the first note's duration was doing exactly the same thing when the notes are the same, but I don't see it show up in the editor.
    Here are two images of what I am seeing in the Score Editor
    Bottom pair of notes—first extended and tie created.
    Top pair, first note duration not extended. No tie.
    Here, I've extended the first note in the top pair, to get
    the tie, but as you see it duplicated the note in the
    second position too, and of course changed the sound
    from what it should be.
    So, questions:
    1. Am I doing the right thing, achieving ties by extending the durations of notes in this manner? It seems to work just fine when the notes are the same, but I am wondering if, instead of generating an extended single note, I am getting a doubled note (or louder note). It seems this is the case. Is there a better way to make ties (both in sound and in the editor) without doubling notes?
    2. How do you do ties between different pitched notes—again without generating a third note? Is this handled differently than tying to notes of the same pitch?
    Thanks.

    Just to add:
    Most instruments can only manage a slur between notes of different pitches... on a brass instrument it's using a different valve fingering with out tonguing the note but there's still a slight bump with the new fingering. The exception of course is the trombone, because of a slide that can actually glissando between notes. Valve instruments can bend and half-valve notes but that a special technique. A piano or organ can't do what you describe... orchestral string instruments (as well as fretless electric bass) can but that's a function of the instrument and is usually written as a slur with bowing instructions.
    It's never written as different pitches tied.

  • Score editor / sibelius

    Hi,
    I know there are many sibelius users here (due to the sometimes limited score editor in logic) so that is why i am asking the following:
    Is there a way to "paste at original position" in sibelius?
    Thnks in advance,
    K

    It should work OK.. A couple of years ago, I exported some Logic midi files into Finale without a problem.
    I would check Sibelius's preferences for importing midi files. Does it expect to see a bass on midi channel 2, drum on midi channel 10, melody on midi channel 1, etc. There is a GM standard, so that different applications and platforms can play midi files.
    Go back to the Logic file, and set up your channels accordingly. Often if you use Logics virtual instruments, you have everything on channel 1. Once you've set up your Logic midi tracks.. (Each instrument has to be on different midi channel) - Merge them into one region, and select the "export selection as midi file". If you don't Sibelius will see it as one big instrument, all parts, bass drums, guitar, melody, etc like being played on a piano. It will look and sound like chaos.
    When you've merged and exported your midi file, click on it's preview button from your finder. It will play it with quicktime on your desktop.. That should sound OK.. You should hear the different parts in appropriate voices. If this is all messed up, SIbelius won't know how to deal with it either.
    You may have to go back to the original Logic midi files, and put program numbers into each track (IE assign bass track to a GM bass patch, a piano part to a GM piano sound etc. ). Once you do this your merged exported midi file should be able to play in quicktime.
    Google online, and find a free midi sight, and download a file.. Play it from the desktop. Then drag it into Logic, It will divide itself into channels, and sometimes even assign instruments if it has proper PG's. Then look at the event list for each channel, and you will understand what it is doing..
    This may seem like a bit of work, but once you get used to it, it's easy. I sometimes move midi tracks between different programs to work on them. (ie. Logic and Band-in-a-box, Finale). It's pretty painless, once you get over the initial set-up issues

  • Bass note in Score window has stem facing upward, and cannot switch downard.

    In the Logic Score window, I created a quarter F2 bass note, but the stem is facing upward and I cannot seem to force it to point downward.
    I double clicked the note and tried to change its direction, but it did not change. I also chose to move the stem downward from the same Attributes menu, but it just made the stem shorter. I can hide the stem, but that’s about it.
    Is this a known bug? Is there an update on the way?

    Do all of the F2 notes have their stem upwards, or is it just that one?
    You can change the stems in the staff style window (in the score editor).
    Nobody knows if there's an update on the way...

  • Create a tab view item in obj-c for use in applescript studio

    I'm making an application with applescript studio. I want to be able to add tab view items to a tab view at the press of a button. The problem I have is applescript studio doesn't allow me to create a new tab view item. So I'm thinking I can create the tab view item using objective-c, pass that to my applescript, then add it to my tab view.
    In applescript I plan to use the following call methods to first create the tab view item object, and then add it to my tab view. The objective-c code which is called from the first line in the applescript code is below that. When I run my code I'm getting an error saying newTVI is not defined... so maybe you can see my error! Be kind to me because I'm new to objective-c and I'm sure that's where my problem lies. Anyway, I'd appreciate any help.
    ==Applescript calls to create and add a new tab view item
    set newTVI to call method "returnNewTabViewItem" of class "makeNewTabViewItem"
    call method "addTabViewItem:" of objMainTV with parameter newTVI
    ==Objective-c code to create the tab view item
    ==makeNewTabViewItem.h==
    #import <Cocoa/Cocoa.h>
    @interface makeNewTabViewItem : NSTabViewItem
    NSTabViewItem *newTVI;
    -(NSTabViewItem *)returnNewTabViewItem;
    @end
    == makeNewTabViewItem.m==
    #import "makeNewTabViewItem.h"
    @implementation makeNewTabViewItem
    -(NSTabViewItem *)returnNewTabViewItem
    newTVI = [[[NSTabViewItem alloc] initWithIdentifier:nil] autorelease];
    return newTVI;
    @end

    Please, any ideas?

  • Is it possible to change the length of a note in the score editor?

    I thought I saw somewhere that it was now possible to adjust the length of a note in the score editor graphically, i.e. by clicking on the note and somehow adjust its length directly to change it from 1/4 note to 1/8 (for example).
    I don't want to do this by going over to the "Length" dialog on the left because I hate having to switch from thinking in terms of music notation and then having to think (temporarily) in MIDI ticks per beat, etc.
    I must admit that I'm finding it extremely frustrating to simply enter music into Logic in a score....I thought this was supposed to be one of its strengths but it seems to be providing amazing capabilities at the expense of ease of use for beginners.

    greetings dh... are you into Key Commands? There are two which will help you do the above in a trice:
    • Nudge Region/Event Length Right by SMPTE Frame
    • Nudge Region/Event Length Left by SMPTE Frame
    I set mine to the simple letter o and n
    - I click on a note and press o repeatedly.. it grows and grows longer and longer
    – I click on a note and press n repeatedly.. it shrinks and shrinks shorter and shorter
    All by little increments
    If you keep a Piano Roll window open while you do this, you can see the length do this exactly
    man, it is VERY quick and handy for changing the length of notes
    It really helps to have a view of the midi Piano Roll to cross check the exact length and position of the notes.
    Check out the Key Commands:
    • Set Next Higher division
    • Set Next lower division
    These change the note value in the transport bar near the time signature. Your time signature may be 4/4 but the "grid" on which the notes are appear in the Piano Roll could be displayed in quarter, 8th or 16th notes. If you experiment with these commands, then you can match the note lengths easily to the grid display visually (with the above nudge length commands)
    Also - you may like to experiment with the following 3 KEY Key Commands:
    1 • Nudge Region/Event Position Right by Nudge Value
    2 • Nudge Region/Event Position Left by Nudge Value
    This will move your selected notes forward in time or back in time according to the
    value that is set in the Transport bar - say it is 16ths .. then each press of the key will move the notes a 16th
    or if the value is 8th notes, then each press of the key forward or backwards will move the selected notes forward or back by this amount
    ... amazingly useful when you are taking a whole phrase and pasting it somewhere else, or if say you started to write a phrase in the Score Editor and you started on the wrong beat.. then you just Nudge back and forth
    3 • Set Nudge Value to Division
    .. this will in a trice change change the Nudge Value to whatever Note division value is set in the Transport bar
    HTH and forgive me if I have given you too much information
    ..problem is I spent too much time in the Transport Bar in Los Angeles last year drinking with the iSchwartz and other Logic reprobrates... you should join us some time
