Problems downloading E-mails

The problem that I have had now on my wireless connected laptop for quite a few weeks (seems a lot longer) is getting to be quite exasperating. When attempting to download my e-mails I am consistently getting the following message:
"The RETR command did not succeed. Error retrieving a message. Mail server mail.btinternet.com responded: inactivity timeout"
Sometimes, well perhaps more often that not the system will take quite a while to download the first e-mail, then it hangs for a long time before I get the above message. I will click 'Get Message' again, and several seconds more elapse before another message comes in and then it stops again. There are occasional variations to this, and on a good day, particularly first thing in the morning things seem to work ok, then back to the download one message - RETR...... etc - try again - one more message - RETR...... , you get the picture.
I have tried on many occasions going into btinternet web mail to try and work out what's happening, so I am hoping that those who perhaps have experienced this or something similar might be able to advise me what to do to try and sort out the issue.
I am using the following:
BT Homehub v2
Windows 64 bit
Thunderbird V14
Norton Internet Security
Among the things that I have tried is changing the channel on my Hub, but that has made no real difference. I have also downloaded a tool called inSSIDer to and checked my signal strength, as well as seeing if other local signals are interfering with mine. The result is that there is no other user local to me who is using the same channel that I have selected, and as I said I am gettting a really excelent and strong signal.
What I can't check is if there is any other kind of interference that might be interfering with my usage, that doesn't show in the free inSSIDer tool.
I have a reasonably quick download/upload speed, so it can't be that. I'm really puzzled!
When I connect my laptop using an Ethernet cable it does work marginally better, but I have just tried it with the Ethernet connection and have still had the ...RETR......Inactivity timeout error message quoted above.
Where do I go from here, what can I try next? Any help will be very much appreciated.
Alan

Keith,
I did as you suggested and was able to access my e-mails. Before doing that I went logged into web mail and deleted quite a few old messages. I did that just in case it downloaded a whole heap of old stuff. I had left about 30 messages on the server and I could see them all.
Having created the IMAP account I then tried a test message with a rather large attachment (pdf). It may be that I did something wrong, but my desktop client (Thunderbird) knew there was a message there, but it said "loading message" for several minutes, and after about 5 mins I gave up on it.
I don't really understand the difference between the POP3 and IMAP methods, but if it's all about synchronisation is the attachment example I quoted usual?
Regards,
Alan

  • Problems downloading e-mails from a POP account

Hi... my emails are being downloaded in the iphone but when i connect my laptop and open outlook those e-mails are not downloaded into my computer. Then, when i try to open the emails in my iphone, it says " Message has not been downloaded from server" , so I cannot forward the content again into my laptop.

You need to check the settings on your iPhone to see if you have it set to delete the messages from the server after you pick them up from the phone. One of the things about POP3 mail is it is designed for access from one mail program. In other words, if you access from one device. If you set the iPhone to leave the mail on the server, it will be available for you to check from your home computer/laptop.
    Hope this helps you.

  • I am having problems gettting my mail to work ... Mac telling me that my start up disk id full and to delete some files to free up space ... have done this but when i open mail from the dock it just brings up the colour wheel and nothing happening

I am having problems gettting my mail to work ... Mac telling me that my start up disk id full and to delete some files to free up space ... have done this but when i open mail from the dock it just brings up the colour wheel and nothing happening ... it shows when you right click on the mail icon that " application not responding"

If your hard drive is getting full, you need to free up, at least, 20 GBs of space on your iMac's hard drive.
If your Mac is running a fairly recent version of OS X, here are some general guidelines.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your iMac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Other things you can do to gain space.
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it run the automatic ans S.M,A.R.T. tests,  then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the tabs that have the ability to clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
    Good Luck!

  • Problems downloading Photos from 8900 smartphone

    Hi
Im having problems downloading photos stored on an SD card from my BB to PC.
Ive looked at the other posts and turned on mass storage accordingly.
When I connect my BB to the PC using the USB link, the BB informs me the mass storage mode is being activated and requests a password, which I enter.
However, the BB does not appear in the Devices list in the My Computer screen on the PC.
Does anyone have ideas as to the problem??
I have lots of photos on there, so want to avoid sending dozens of mails to get the photos off the BB.
    Thank you

    Hi stuart_fraser,
Have you checked the Windows Device Manager to see if the BlackBerry and/or Mass storage device shows up?  Also, the BlackBerry may show up in "My Computer" as a removable storage device.
    Thanks

  • There was a problem downloading...

    Hi,
    I am having an extremely frustrating issue where I am unable to download any podcasts from either MSNBC or NBC. I recently moved over to a mac an all other podcasts are updating as usual however any NBC/MSNBC podcasts that I am subscribed to can not be downloaded. I receive the following message;
There was a problem downloading ... An internal server error occurred. Please check that the URL is correct and the connection to the network is active and try again.
    Help...

I have had similar problems and using Store>Check for Purchases does not fix the problem as it says I am only allowed to download purchases once.
I have also attempted to contact Apple regarding this issue but their phone support stone walled me. I was told that I must use the online form to submit problems but whenever I try to use the form I get a mailer daemon error from their end returning my e-mail.
Any help is welcome regarding this issue as I've lost an album and I can't download one song to another album.

  • Mail 2.1 re-downloads already downloaded POP mail!

I recently installed Mac OS 10.4.9 on a new Mac Pro tower and my older 15" G4 Powerbook. The OS comes with Apple Mail 2.1. The problem I'm having is with Mail 2.1 regarding retrieving POP mail from the Yahoo server that has already been downloaded. Since I don't routinely clear messages from the Yahoo server, repeating a download from scratch can mean over 9000 messages. This results in duplicate messages piling up in my INBOX.
Since I download POP mail to both of my computers, I don't want to clear the Yahoo server of mail.
How do I prevent Mail 2.1 from downloading already downloaded POP mail without clearing the server?
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

The first time to download the messages was 2 weeks ago when I reformatted my G4 Powerbook with the new Mac OS 10.4.9. I then set up the Apple Mail 2.1 to retrieve messages from the Yahoo server. It downloaded all the messages just fine.
Then about 1 week later, when routinely checking for new mail, it started downloaded from the Yahoo server just as it had the first time (thereby creating dulicate copies of every mail message).
This has forced me to clear the Yahoo server, which I really didn't want to do.
This problem is not severe, I understand. But the older version of Mail never had this problem over 2+ years of use.

  • Problem downloading attachments in Gmail

    Hello,
I'm developing an application that sends mails with attachments from one gmail account to another gmail account and then I download those mails. The problem is that I can check the mails via pop3 and print their envelopes and that stuff but when I get the attachment via the dataHandler and getInputStream the message disappears from the message count and it's not possible to download it again, although if I enter to the gmail account the message is not even checked as read.
    Can you help me? Thanks.

Ok so here it is the code for fetching mails with pop3. If I comment the "element.getDataHandler().getInputStream()" the mail doesn't disappear but then I can't get the attachment.

              fp.add(FetchProfile.Item.ENVELOPE);
              this.folder.fetch(msgs, fp);

  • Some email is downloaded into Mail and some mail is left on the POP server

    Hi All,
I have a weird problem where some email is downloaded into Mail and some mail is not.
If I log into our ISP's webmail system, there are a whole bunch of emails that are just sitting there. These emails have not ever been downloaded to Mail.
I've tried to create a duplicate account, but Mail doesn't allow the same username & password in more than one account, which is kind of frustrating - I get an error stating that these user details are already in use.
Our ISP says it's the client machine, as no one else in the office is having this issue.
The connection doctor can connect to the servers and 30 or 40 emails are downloaded to Mail each day - just some emails don't.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?
    OSX 10.4.6
    Mail 2.0.7
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Powerbook 12"   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Mail 2.0.7

Assuming the account is a POP type account, quit Mail first and using the Finder go to Home > Library > Mail > this POP account named folder (named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account) > MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded2.
Delete the MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded2 file and empty the Trash.
Launch Mail and a new MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded2 file will be created automatically by Mail within the account named folder.
If successful, any previously downloaded messages that remain on the server will be downloaded again along with any messages available on the server not yet downloaded by Mail.
The reason you cannot create two accounts in Mail with the same user name and incoming mail server is based on the account and associated mailbox filing structure within the Mail folder at Home > Library > Mail. When creating an account in Mail, an account named folder is created at the first level within the Mail folder named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account.
In addition, if this were possible I don't think it would resolve much by having identical accounts created in Mail with both accounts checking the incoming mail server at the same time.

  • IMac with Snow Leopard - Mail 4.5 not downloading e-mails

    Hi there,
I am using an iMac with Snow Leopard 10.6.8, which has Mail 4.5 on it.  Since yesterday, my Mail application will no longer download e-mails.  When I open it, the little tray in the corner says it is downloading message 26 of 26, but after it finishes, nothing happens.  No new Mail has been downloaded.  It keeps doing this, even after a reboot (I have double-checked that the order of my Mail hasn't changed, and it isn't just showing at the bottom).
Today, I removed my Gmail account from Mail, and added it again.  I entered my Gmail username/password.  Once set up, it proceeds to download e-mails (downloading 1 of 26).  The thing is, it has shown this constantly for the last 20 minutes.  I don't even have big recent e-mails.
I'm not sure what I can do to resolve this, would appreciate any suggestions.
    Many thanks.
P.S. I don't think it's a Gmail problem, as I have a MacBook Air with Lion, and Mail is downloading all e-mails on it without any issues.

    Hi Zak,
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

  • Switching from POP to IMAP mail without losing downloaded POP mail (??)

I want to switch from POP mail to IMAP on two different business email accounts (both support IMAP) and a Gmail account, so I'll have all my desktop mail folders on my iPhone (not just the inbox stuff).
I'm concerned about losing my downloaded POP mail in the process.
Some time ago, I switched briefly to IMAP on one of my biz email accounts (as part of a web collaboration app), and lost lots of mail in the process.
If someone could summarize the steps to do this I'd be quite appreciative!
    Paul / Los Angeles, Calif.

    Hi,
Last month I have switched to IMAP from POP for several of my email accounts. I don't think it is possible to switch to IMAP from POP without deleting the account. I didn't find anything in the preferences. I usually don't erase emails in the server, so I didn't have any problem getting all my mails back.
In case you have erased emails on the server but not in your computer, it is a good idea to backup any of your mailboxes (Using "Archive Mailbox..." in "Mailbox" menu) that you feel important.

  • Need to download new MAIL program for my Panther

Help, my Mail program died and I need to install new one, where do I find a download of Mail for my X10.2.8?????
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

I copied the following from my posted reply to your query in the Tiger forum.
If for a POP type account, try the following.
Quit Mail first and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail > this account named folder (named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account) > MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded.
Delete the MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded file and empty the Trash.
This should resolve the problem and if successful, any previously downloaded messages that remain on the server will be downloaded again and for future reference, you should not be accessing and especially deleting messages with a POP type account when running the Mail.app or any email client and using webmail access at the same time.

  • Mail is not downloading e-mails from the server

Mail is not downloading e-mail from the yahoo server.  However, I am able to send e-mails out

My problem with mail concerns gmail and not Yahoo.  But about once a day I see an email come in on my iPhone or iPad and then I wait for it to come in on my MBP, running Mavericks 10.9.2 with all the updates current.  It never does come in.  I find that by exiting from Mail and then in a few seconds opening it again that the missing mail will come in.  Also, I found that by taking the gmail server off line and then right back on line that the missing email will come it.
I like to reply to my email from the MBP so that I have a record of the sent files.  Sending from the IOS devices doesn't let the MBP know about the sent file.
This never happens under IOS 7.1 on my iPhone and iPad.  So I suspect it is a problem with Mavericks.
I'm sure I'm not the only one having problems with this.   Is this a problem with Mavericks or with gmail?

You can get faster help by posting the Mac OS version you have and more details about your iMac. They have been in continuous productionsince 1998 with four distinct procesor families, and each ahve different troubleshooting steps. If you called a Ford dealer about a car problem, the first thing ithey will ask is "which Ford model and year?" Same deal here.
The processor description is found when you do "About this Mac" and will be a good start for identifying your iMac model; the Mac OSX will be there too.
