Problems editing 'H264 MPEG4 AVC' on CC

Hi all,
I took some video using a webcam that I need to edit in Premiere Pro. I converted it to 'Mov' and the codec info is 'H264 MPEG4 - AVC'. It imports to Premiere but the video appears extremely pixalated and disfigured to the point where it is unwatchable. I have set the sequence settings to the same as the source file.
Can anyone help with this? I'm fairly new to this so let me know if I should provide any more information.

Hi, thanks for getting back to me.
1. Yes, it looks awful in the source monitor too!
2. Both clips play in VLC media player. It being a webcam, the quality obviously is not great but it doesn't need to be for its purpose
3. Dimensions of both are 640 x 480
4. The original clip was .flv so wouldn't open in Premiere Pro at all.
I know it's not good practise to shoot something on a webcam and then edit in Premiere but for this occassion it was necessary and if there's any way to edit the footage that would be very helpful!

Is CS5 a good edit program to edit mpeg-4 AVC/H.264 with?

I always used adobe premiere pro 2 to edit DV. But now i've bought a new HD camera so i'm searching for a good program to edit my movies with. Right now I have to convert my HD movies in elements 7 and transfer it to adobe, but the result is very poor,time consuming and frustrating.
I'm about to buy a new computer and also a new edit program. But is CS5 a good choice? Is it possible to capture or transfer my movies of mpeg4 AVC/H.264 straight into a project in CS5? is there anybody out there who already uses this kind of codec for projects in CS5?

I've read the threads related to the need to convert video shot in both H.264 and mpeg4 AVC H.264 before editing in FCE. But I am wondering if there are any pros or cons on which would result in the better quality.
Do you experts think it makes a difference? Once you use Mpeg Streamslip is it all the same?
I am asking this because those seems to be the available formats for shooting video with the point and shoot cameras currently available. The Canon format is H.264. Nikon s6000 uses the mpeg4 AVC H.264. With the Canon the workflow involves importing the video from the camera using the supplied Canon software, then converting it with Mpeg SS, before importing it into FCE. Log and transfer doesn't work. When I converted the video straight from the SD card with Mpeg SS, the resulting video when imported into Final Cut required rendering. Using the same setting after importing it with the Canon software, does not require rendering.
I just bought the Canon and I am wondering if I exchanged it with the Nikon if I could avoid the intermediate step or if the quality would be any different. Any thoughts?

It must be so frustration for you folks to have to keep explaining this to newbies. I was thinking perhaps this forum needs one of those sticky, permanent answers called "Codec for Dummies." Or Tom you could add a primer to your next edition of the book.
So the proper terminology when referring to H.264 is codec not format? Unfortunately the manufacturers don't help us much. This from the Nikon website:

Now I understand why our techs at work would always say not all Quicktime .mov files are the same whenever I asked what format people should use when sending us digital video!
FTR or FYI, I did an experiment and shot a bit of video at the camera store using the Nikon s6000 on my SD card and just converted it with MPEG streamclip then imported it into FCE directly. It comes in fine with no need to render it, unlike the Canon file where I have to use the Canon software to import it and then, MPEG streamclip and then import it to FCE. Saves a step.
So I am going to take the Canon back and exchange it for the Nikon. (Another reason for me to be a Nikon shooter!

Considering a Sony - HDR-XR350V - HD: MPEG4 AVC/H.264; SD: MPEG2
Please help - I have been using search and spent about 45 min with a Sony sales person on the phone today, but would love to hear from someone using this camera or an expert who can interpret the specs.
Is this camera a true AVCHD camera and will it work seamlessly with FCE?
I understand, if it is compatible, that I would have to use Log and Transfer and the files would be converted to Apple Intermediate Codec (fairly large file size) I would plan to use an external drive as scratch disk for any large projects.

My ultimate use for camera is editing, using iDVD to create DVD for use on TV, or being able to upload short video projects to Facebook or You tube.
For these shorter projects will this camera also work well with iMovie 09
I am so frustrated trying to find a good camera that will work well with FCE - my old Sony (only two years old has died) I had to use Mpeg Streamclip to convert its files - large learning curve but mastered it. I don't want to go through another complicated process to begin editing again with a new camera ($271 for repair and 90 day warranty doesn't make sense to fix the old one).

I believe the Sony - HDR-XR350V camera has several different settings for filming - are you able to tell me how to set the camera or should I just cross that bridge when I get it. I would like to use the highest quality setting. The Sony sales guy said it has Progressive and Interlace settings - That is over my head. For going to iDVD for play on a TV what would I use. I will be ordering the camera on Monday.

Editing h264 Natively in FCP

Opening an H264 Mov file in QuickTime Pro, cutting footage from the timeline, and "Save As --> Self Contained Movie" instantly saves your new, edited video, without "Re-Compressing it" keeping the exact same File Size / Compression Artifact Quality ratio, with zero "Render time"
The problem with this, is, editing with the QT Pro "Arrow, and In / out Markers" is not very precise, for small edits, you can't "Zoom in" on the timeline.
I have hours of H264 footage that looks great, needs to be edited, and I don't want to convert to DV to work with, and re-compress it, and loose quality.
Is there a way to get Final Cut Pro to edit H264 footage, without having to re-render it ?

When I try to open the newly created Sequence, I get a "General Error", when I click OK - I get an "Out of memory" error.
THis trick works for a lots of formats. However, not all codecs are editable. H.264 is a case in point.
What about saving / exporting the sequence once it's edited, without another "Pass" through the H264 codec.
This is why I capture into a High Def format, then compress to H.264. DVCPRO HD is great for this purpose. If you want to edit these codecs natively, you'll have to use another editing platform, like Premiere.

Edit H264 (1440 x 1080) video in FCP7 using MacBook Pro?

I have hundreds of H264 (1440 x 1080), 29.97 fps, 12.01 Mbps video files that I must review and edit very quickly.. I would like to edit them directly in FCP7 using a MacBook Pro that is about 8 months old with 8GB of ram. I read that the MacBook Pro has a H264 chip in it so you can edit those files without converting them first. The files range in size from 30MB to a GB. I don't want to have to convert the files first unless I have no choice.
I also have some TOD HD files that I am have to convert since FCP7 will not edit them. I have started converting them to to ProRes 422 lte (unless someone tells me to do otherwise).
The output will be 1000 DVD.s for parents and students that expect a professional looking DVD.
I will not be doing any zoom or crop editing.
I have three questions:
1. Can I edit h2564 MPEG4 files in FCP7 using a MacBook Pro?
2. If I have to convert first, Should I use ProRes 422 lte or something else?
what should my settings be?
Bit rate: 256, 512, 768 or 1024?
Size: 640, 1280, 1440 or 1920?
3. I tried using MPEG Streamclip, but it didn't seem to do as good of a job as another converter (Aunsoft)I was using. Is this my imagination? StreamClip is really fast and files are smaller, but quality is crucial.
I would greatly appreciate someone that can steer me in the right direction. Thank you!

I read that the MacBook Pro has a H264 chip in it so you can edit those files without converting them first.
This is not correct. The media needs to be converted to a production format to work properly in FCP.
1. Not without rendering.
2. ProRes LT. The bit rate doesn't matter. ProRes sets it. The size and frame rate should be the same as the original.
3. Is this my imagination?
Yes. If Streamclip is used correctly it encodes as well as a basic Compressor encode.

Problem editing photos in iPhoto 6

Hi,
I am having a problem editing photos. When I click on a photo to edit I get the following error message:
Unreadable Files
The following file could not be imported. (The file is in the iPhoto Library folder.)
/Users/myusername/Pictures/iPhoto Library2006/Modified/2006/Roll2183/DSCN0164.jpg
I have rebuilt the photo library. I also backed up my iphoto library and reimported the photos. I have not messed with the photo library at all. I import my photos from the camera and generally work with them. I think this has been a problem since upgrading to 6.
Has anyone else seen this?

Problem editing place in Pics

I am having a problem editing the places in the Pictures. It doesn't behave properly. I have a combination of Pictures with Iphone that are geotagged and regular pics also. If I highlight several pictures click the check box to edit place the places are not saved when I exit out of that screen. I like using the Iphone because it already has the geotagged info and would like to extend that info easily to the other pics taken at the same location. With some other pictures I have taken, I try to change the places info like the name, but for some reason I run into the same problem that the info is not saved after I select done and exit out. Anyone know what im doing wrong?

I am not clear on your work flow
To add a "place" to a photo that does not have a "place" select the photo and click on the "i" in the lower right hand corner - click on place and type the place you want, if one you want comes up in the list click on it otherwise click on find on map and wait for the Google map to appear, locate the photo and click assign to photo and done
There is no way to copy locations between photos

Problem editing photo's from LR 2.0 in Photoshop

I have a problem editing photo's from LR 2.0 in Photoshop CS4. When I select a photo to edit in PS PS starts up but nothing further happens. This goes for all the different options (in layers, as HDR, etc) except for editing the original photo (in this case a jpeg-file). The option "edit original file" works fine. Help!!

Don't know whether it will fix it, but you should ditch 2.0 and install 2.1 RC (see top of the forum for the link). There were many bugs like this in 2.0 that were fixed in 2.1, so certainly worth a try. If nothing else, you'll have a much smoother running Lightroom.

PROBLEM EDITING AUDIO BETWEEN PREMIERE CS4 AND AU OR SB

I have a problem editing my audio files in audition or soundboth, when I return to premiere after have edited the file in AU or SB, I can't see the wave in premiere but I can hear the audio.
I have to rebote premiere to see the wave.
What could be happening?

What are your exact steps to edit in SB or AU? Do you first Rt-click on the Audio Clip and choose Edit in SoundBooth (or Audition)? Do you Render and Replace (basically what happens with the previous method), and then Open that resulting file in SB, or AU?
From SB, or AU, how do you Save your file - exact steps please?

As these are public forums, you're not talking to iTunes Support, I've asked the hosts to remove your email address from your post - it's not a good idea to post it unless you like spam email.
The reset link will only show if you have a rescue email address on your account - a rescue email address is not the same as an alternate/secondary email address, they are different addresses/settings on an account.
If you don't have a rescue email address (you won't be able to add one until you can answer 2 of your questions) then you won't get the reset option - you will need to contact iTunes Support / Apple to get the questions reset.

Is there a 100 column report limit and/or a problem editing dynamic reports

I have a report which is generated dynamically, the source being a PL/SQL function body returning SQL query. The on-screen output is generated using mod plsql, i.e. an html table.
If I run the report with parameters which return more than 100 columns, all are displayed on screen
However, if I click on the (standard functionality) 'export to csv' link at the bottom of the report, not all of the columns are exported.
If I navigate to the report definition page, firstly a pop-up error appears: "A Runtime Error has occurred. Do you wish to debug? Line 272 Error: ';' Expected". If I click 'no' then the report definition appears. There are 100 columns listed 'Col01', 'Col02', 'Col03' ... 'Col100'.
I can't edit anything on the page without getting an error when I apply changes:-

Could it be related to this Is it a bug (Form with more than 100 items/columns) ?
Is this a bug or an undocumented feature?

It created a 100 column report and I was able to manipulate the report the same as any other. So maybe it is not the fact that there are 100 columns. I know its not an answer to your question but maybe it can help.

hello, when my Q10 work account isn't responding ,its ask me to "tap for more info" , i go to "System Setting" - Accounts --Set up email --select my work account email address (show "Not Connected) -- "Edit Account" -Configure the account settings for- always in red font : -Not All Connections were closed in the alloted time. no matter how I change server address, port and smtp server address , SSL..etc..finally solve is to keep delete my work email account and re-install. this is happen on my own work email address account. i have another recruit email work account with same company domain name. but never have this problem. hotmail, yahoo doesnt happen also. may anyone can help ? or only solution is to keep delete and re-install. fyi., this is my second Q10 used 4 mths back. 2st Q10 doesnt happen for all work and personal mail account.Thanks alot.

IISproxy problem: Edit locally - check in

I have with succes implemented th IISproxy filter so I now can access the portal through the IIS(version 5.0).
I have som excel files that are being edited with the "Edit locally" function. This works fine (excel opens up and I can edit the data locally) but when I afterworth will "Check In" the modified documents the system "hangs". On the client the normal "copy file windows window" showing "Copyied 140% and still not finished... This wil go on for ever so I click cancel and the modified excelfile is'nt updated through the portal.
THIS WORK FINE BEFORE I IMPLEMENTED THE IISproxy module...
In the IISproxy log file i have:

Please try also the following settings:
use-continue=false
keep-alive=false
close-socket=true
These were reported by SAP support as the recommended settings for customer having problems with Local Editing and IIS Proxy.
ActiveX is for Windows only, Java Applet can be used also on other platforms. To use the Java Applet uncheck ActiveX, select "Java Applet" and set the version to "1.3" even if running 1.4 (again a recommendation from SAP support).
If it still doesn't work, you should check that your Java Plug-In actually works. Here is a link I always use to check that the Java Plug-In works:
