Problems Editing Previous Annotations with Preview

Hi,
I was just wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem with Preview and/or has any advice on how to fix it.
Ever since upgrading to Mountain Lion, I've been having problems whenever I try to edit any of my text annotations in Preview. All of my notes for school are given as PDFs, so I have always used Preview and the textbox function to take notes during lecture. Before I upgraded, if I opened a previously-annotated document to study from and wanted to change something or add to the text, I would simply double-click the textbox and be able to fix it in 1 second.
Unfortunately, trying to make any changes to annotations has become a major process ever since switching to Mountain Lion.
Basically, as soon as I double-click any textbox to edit something I wrote at an earlier time, the box will shrink up to a single line that goes off the page and into oblivion. I have to resize the textbox over and over again just to fit it back on the page, which can be time-consuming and frustrating when paragraphs of text are suddenly condensed to one line that extends ten miles beyond the margins. It happens both with older documents from Lion and with the new documents I've only downloaded and annotated since upgrading to Mountain Lion. I thought maybe it was just my computer, but I tried it on a friend's Mac with Mountain Lion and had the same problem.
I have only used Preview for everything, so all of my annotations have been made using the same program. Also, it gives me no trouble if I try to edit as long as the document remains open; it only happens after I close out of a document and open it up again at a later time (even if it's immediately after closing it). Unfortunately, I can't keep 200+ documents open on the chance I might need to edit them at some point.
If anyone has any clue how I can stop this from happening in Preview or has a suggestion for another good PDF editor (aside from anything Adobe preferably), I would really appreciate it!!
Thank you very much in advance.

This is happening to me too! It's so frustrating especially since I've come to love Preview before upgrading to mountain lion. At first glace it seemed Preview had become more userfriendly with the textbox, line and circle drawers all separate icons now but the textboxes are such a pain. I know it only takes an extra 5 seconds or so, but by the time you add all the 5 seconds' up, it's heaps of time. It's especially hard if I'm listening to a lecture and I have to stop and fix my textboxes while the lecturer is still talking.
Sorry this isn't much of a solution, but I hope you don't feel alone dealing with this flaw!

  • Yosemite crippled PDF text annotation with Preview.

In previous versions of preview, you used to be able to select 'textbox' markup tool and one-click create textboxes wherever you want on a pdf. Now, with the new Yosemite, selecting 'text' markup tool  creating a textbox in the middle of the screen, not where-ever you click. This cripples the productivity of annotating lecture slides during a lecture. I don't want my text box to always appear right in the middle of the page- I want to click to place it.
Also, why is it vertically center justified- who, EVER, used vertically center justified text rather than vertically top justified text?
    Are there anyways around this?

The link below provides instructions for annotating a pdf in Yosemite Preview, and additional links at the bottom of this page provide instructions for several other pdf editing capabilities:

Fill out and sign PDF forms

  • Problems merging PDF's with Preview

    Hi there,
I'm on 10.8.5, with Preview Version 6.0.1 (765.6).  I have followed all of the steps to merge pdf's. In the title bar of the document it says there are two pages.  Then I save (there is no save as command) and it only saves one page.  Is there something I'm missing or is this a bug?
    Any help is appreciated!
    Thanks

"Try showing them as thumbnails, then Edit/Select All, and then Export as PDF.
Tried this several times as well as every other export/save option. View as thumbnails in two separate documents and successfully see 1 document with 2 files listed in the left pane.
And though the export displays a completed progress bar just before it disapears and the file is created where I pointed, there is still only the bottom page of the the two thumbnails in the newly created file.

  • Incomprehensible Editing of PDF with Preview

I used to LOVE using Preview to do simple PDF document editing .. mostly just combining PDF files together. All you had to do was drag the PDF file into the sidebar of an existing one to append them together and you were done. Perfect!
Now here is Snow Leopard and suddenly things have gone all ape-****. I can no longer figure out WHAT the side-bar is doing. I drag a PDF file into it and it seems to simply display that PDF file but doesnt combine the pages ... instead I get an incomprehensible hybrid view of two distinct PDF files kinds sorta wrapped into one view. Which I cannot seem to save and cannot seem to flatten. Save is utterly confusing ... I seem to save the file, but I only really save bits of it. I'm stumped .. Apple have taken a simple elegant model and made it virtually unusable.
What's going on here? Is there something obvious I'm missing? Does anyone have ANY idea what Apple were intending with this utterly confusing "feature" ?

  • Problem opening PDF files with Preview

Occasionally I get this message when trying to open a PDF file in an email attachment:
"it may be damaged or use a file format that preview doesn't recognise"
However, when I open the same attachment on my iPad, using GoodReader it does open, so the file is not damaged.
The issue seems to be with Preview and started recently (after new Mac updates maybe).
I don't want to post the PDF file here since it's company property.
    Any suggestions ?

    Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
    sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -N {} + -type d -exec chmod +x {} + 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Problem editing Word docs with Magic Trackpad

Hi--I'm a playwright working in Word. I recently purchased a magic trackpad. I'm having a tough time selecting text for cutting, copying, etc. I'll want to select a word or two but wind up getting the whole paragraph, an incomplete chunk, or nothing it all. It's frustrating because I'm used to moving fast. How can I make it behave like the good trackpad in my MacBook Pro? And where can I get a good explaination of the I-beam cursor. Different parts of it seem to do different things.
    Boggled

I have the same problem with a Trackpad paired with a new Mac Mini just purchased in September. After a while, my trackpad also starts to exhibit behavior similar to those described by Hecro. The trackpad cursor feels frozen, or else it jumps around, often trying to stay away from or jump over any hyperlink in either text or graphic form on the page I am viewing.
I find that if I pick up the trackpad and hold it above my palm between my thumb on one side and my fingers on the other side — so there is no pressure on the clicking feet on the bottom of the trackpad — a "jumping" trackpad instantly becomes a "stable" trackpad. Put it back down on a surface and it starts jumping again.
Also, when it starts jumping or skipping, I also find that if I use one finger and bear down hard on the trackpad, it resumes being responsive.
I am filing a comment about this on Apple's feedback forum at www.apple.com/feedback at the advice of a Genius at the Apple Store at Cambridgeside in Cambridge, Massachusetts USA.

  • Using Publisher 2013 problem editting 2010 files with border

    Hi guys,
Wondering if you could help. We have files created in Publisher 2010. I can choose any part of the document and edit.
If I open the same document in publisher 2013, if click on the document it highlights the whole thing and I can't choose individual items. Only way to edit any of the document is to remove borders. Was wondering if it was supposed to work this way or the
original document was created wrong somehow? Same document opens in 2010 andi  can edit everything right away so it's a small annoyance.
    Any ideas/suggestions?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Is this issue specific to a single file?
I'm not able to reproduce this issue: I created a publisher document in Publisher 2010, and opened it in Publisher 2013, I could choose any individual items.

  • Problems with annotating in preview

    hi,
i've had no issues using the annotate function for preview prior to my snow leopard upgrade. the most important function for me was the highlight text function for use in lectures. however, after upgrading, the text i highlight often highlights in "circles" or "ribbon-like shapes" if its a huge chunk of text. i've uploaded some pictures in case you guys don't quite understand what i mean.
it would be perfect if there's any way i can revert back to the older version of annotating for preview. ):
this is what it looks like before upgrading:
this is what it looks like right now:

So, a week later, and I think I'm narrowing in on the problem. WARNING: long post follows:
When I bought the new Macbook Pro, I bought an SSD after market to install in the optibay. Once it was installed, I reinstalled Mountain Lion on the SSD and obliterated the original hard drive. I then moved my Home folder from the SSD to the traditional hard drive using instructions found many places on the 'net. (CNET is one source, but there are many others.) Essentially, I created a dummy Admin acount and used it to copy the data from the SSD to the traditional hard drive, then changed the Home folder in System Preferences. Worked like a charm, no errors. Or so I thought.
I kept the dummy Admin account on the SSD for general troubleshooting, so last night I tried logging in with that account and working in Preview to do what I was trying before... and it worked just fine. Menus popped up super quick, the Export and Save As functions returned the appropriate menus... in short, perfect operation. But this doesn't work properly on my regular user account, whose Home directory was moved.
I didn't use system links because most articles said this was unnecesary under Lion or Mountain Lion. But it does seem like something is not working correctly, as these menus will not pull up on the account with the moved home folder.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks again!

  • Thoroughly frustrating problem with Preview

    Hi,
I'm new to the forum and tried to hold out as long as possible, but the problem I'm having has so thoroughly frustrated me I had to post this. Let me try to be as clear as possible.
I have a Mac (OS 10.8.2, upgraded from a late-2009 Macbook running Snow Leopard - 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 gb RAM, 1067 MHz DDR3). I have Adobe Acrobat Pro XI installed. I also have Microsoft Office 2011. Both Acrobat, M. Office, and all my software is fully updated and current. I have no font conflicts, as I have just clean re-installed my OS because this problem is so frustrating.
The issue is with pdfs I make of books I own. Sometimes I will use my iphone 4 (latest iOS 6.1.2) with apps like "CamScanner+" or "GeniusScan+" to copy chapters and make pdfs. (CamScanner+ has built in OCR capability.) I then upload them to my WebDAV bibliography storage cloud on Box.net to access from my Mac laptop. Sometimes I use the University's big overhead scanner to make monochrome pdfs, and run OCR thru Acrobat Pro XI. Sometimes I will use the Canon scanners in the computer labs, and do OCR in Acrobat Pro XI then. In each case, I use Zotero to handle attaching pdfs to bib entries and sync it all up to my WebDAV account. (Zotero has a plugin I use called "Zotfile," which also allows one to extract notes, highlighting, annotations, etc., and store them on Zotero while also keeping them on the pdf.) In either case, though, I always run the pdf thru Acrobat Pro XI to optimize, at the least.
When I access the pdfs for notetaking, research, etc., I tend to use Mac's Preview built-in app. I find it easier to streamline, scroll, view and add notes, less clutery, etc. I see that this new Mountain Lion Preview is much different than Snow Leopard's, which is very regrettable. In this version, Preview saves as you go, it seems.
The problem is that everytime I save the pdf I've been working on from File>Save (and even when Preview saves as I go), it does a number of nasty, unwanted things. First, it somehow doubles the filesize (e.g., from 30mb to 67mb). Second, and MOST HATED, it takes the OCR'ed texts/fonts and converts them all to alien faces, square boxes, or just blanks. (God it's making me angry just thinking about it now - I've spent two full weeks now trying to fix this!!!!) This happens regardless of whether I ClearScan the OCR, Searchable text the OCR, or Searchable text (exact) the OCR. It happens regardless of whether the OCR'ed fonts are embedded, embedded subsets, etc. Every option on Acrobat Pro XI, I feel I have tried and exhausted and Preview still f$&#s it up. As far as I can tell, this happens regardless of what kind of font is used in the OCR'ed pdf (e.g., TrueType, CID, etc.). In every single instance, Preview will 1) double the file size and 2) screw up the fonts upon saving. If I take this newly ruined pdf back into Acrobat Pro, highlight text, copy and try to paste into Word, Chrome, or any other app it produces the same result. However, if I right click and "copy with formatting" from Acrobat Pro, it copies the actual words/font. The newly ruined Preview pdf doesn't return any word searches either. And annotations like highlighting, once extracted or even viewed in the notes&highlighting box, show blanks. I have downloaded and tried a Mac app called Skim, and it is the exact same effect, unless I File>Export...
I know this is not a problem with my Mac's fonts since I just did a clean re-install. Font Book tells me everything is alright too. This occurs regardless of what save settings I choose in Preview (e.g., the default settings, the quartz settings, reduce file size, etc.).
The strange part, though, is that when I take this newly ruined Preview'ed pdf, highlight text, go to font inspector, it says the highlighted font is exactly what it was when Acrobat saved it (e.g., Arial). And if I take this same document back to Acrobat and view properties, it says the fonts are the same as they were when Acrobat Pro originally processed it.
SO... I hope someone can help me with a fix for this. I truly do not want to use Acrobat Pro XI as my research pdf tool. It doesn't scroll smoothly, the layout is clunky, etc. It just isn't conducive to research/reading/notetaking. Preview, I think, is, and so I want to be able to have a fix for this so that Preview will quit ruining my life.
I can provide sample pdfs if that might help. I can provide the original Acrobat Pro XI processed pdfs, as well as the newly ruined Preview pdfs. BTW, I posted this in Adobe's forums as well.

I assume the answer by macjack would not apply in the case of Snow Leopard - Preview version 5.0.3 - but I have the same issue with OCR (not the constant autosave issue though) on my '10 MBP running osx 10.6.8 where suddenly maybe about a year ago 2 hugely annoying things changed in Preview.
As first poster stated (and he/she obviously knows a LOT more about this stuff than me) Preview stopped providing accurate search results with most pdf documents (some downloaded, some created from web, etc., no idea of common thread there).
I can NO LONGER COPY AND PASTE any text in any pdf opened in Preview to another application!! I used to have no problem copying pdf text from Preview to, say, text edit. Now it comes up weird boxes and dashes and no, font choice and/or conflict is not the issue.
I realize this thread is within the Mountain Lion community, and forgive me if I should start a new thread in some other area of this forum saying exactly what I have here, but I have searched and searched on this topic for months and this is the first thread I found which refers to these exact issues I'm enduring.
Any further advice or comments on the subject - or even constructive instructions if I should post elsewhere - would be greatly appreciated!

  • Problems displaying a pdf correctly (both with preview and adobe reader)

    Hey guys,
I've been having problems with displaying lecture notes (pdf files) correctly. It doesn't matter if I use preview or adobe reader.
Can anyone please help me out?
    thanks a lot in advance,
    Simon

    Hi there,
I have a very similar problem: a number of pdf files that I can see perfectly well in Safari/GoogleChrome do NOT show correctly in Preview or ANY iPad app I have (Notability, Adobe, PDF Expertm iAnnotate, Dropbox etc.).
The problem is that punctuation -- with the expection of periods or bolded text -- does not show properly. For example, commas and quotation marks to not show, and some numbers to not show.
Moreover, once I have annotated/viewed the problematic file on the IPad and resync to dropbox to view on Mac vis Adobe (which I do with most pdf files with no problems), I get an error message upon reopening the pdf file saying "Cannot extract the embedded font 'FAFWQV+--unknown-2--'. Some characters may not display or print correctly." (the 'quoted' text changes each time). When opening in Preview, no error message appears, though the fole is still lacking punctuation etc.
Here is a link to one problematic pdf: http://niis.cass.cn/upload/2012/12/d20121201200145301.pdf
NB: the file is in Mandarin, however I can successfully open/edit/annotate/sync other pdfs using Mandarin font so I'm not sure if the language is related to the problem.
I would be extremely grateful for some help with this please!
    Thanks!

  • Editing pdf files in Preview painfully SLOW with mavericks! Why? How to fix?

Editing pdf files in Preview is painfully SLOW with Mavericks! With mountain lion everything was so smooth .... Why? How can I fix this?

I stopped using preview. Adobe Acrobat Pro is running fine ... this is not a solution to the problem though. The question remains open: why is preview not running as before?
    Why did I upgrade?!

  • Something is wrong with Preview 8.0. Saving half of each photo after edit. Why?

Preview 8.0 has a big problem. Preview 8.0 is only saving half of each photo--literally. Happens when I open photo to edit , then save. See below. (I am posting this in several places since I can find no community that deals with Preview!)
I am a long time mac user. Never had a problem before with Preview but apparently with the new update this week, I do. I have been editing photos for printing. Some need minor editing so I often use Preview with no problem.  Now it eats half of each photo!  I tried to use Preview  revert command but that did not work; however, was eventually able to restore. But this is crazy. Have switched to using Photoshop, but that's a pain when I only want to do a fast crop and save before printing. Now cannot trust Preview!
I saw the posts about Preview crashing, but have not had that happen.
Anyone else experience anything like this. Happens on my Mac BookPro running 10.10.3.

I would run the combo updater, It's a quick easy option
If that fails, do the following steps to reset Your files permissions.
Boot into the Recovery Drive by holding down Command R when restarting.
In the menu bar, select Utilities -> Terminal. Type resetpassword in the Terminal and press Enter.
1 Select your main hard drive.
2 In the dropdown box under "Select the user account" make sure to select your username.
3 Select the option: "Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs", click the Reset button. It's not obvious when it's complete.
4 Quit the Reset Password application.
    5 Quit the Terminal.
At this point you can restart or do other tasks like running Repair Disk in Disk Utility or Reinstall OS X.
I recommend doing Repair Disk to verify the health of your drive. You can Repair Permissions while booted from your drive, but you can't Repair Disk unless you boot from recover or another drive.
To Restart: Click Mac OS X Installer in the top left and click Quit Mac OS X Installer. Click the Startup Disk button. Click on your main hard drive and click the Restart button.

  • Problem with Preview and PSD files - random gray square

Hi guys, hope you can help...
I've got a problem with Preview and PSD files.
If I open in Preview both an original jpg straight from my reflex and the photoshop version of the same picture, the psd file presents a gray square (of what it seems unrendered image) in a random area of the photo (sometimes in the center.). The square is quite big...
If I zoom in or zoom out it disappears...if I scroll to another photo and then back to the psd, the square it's there again...sometimes in a different position.
I've tried the same psd on my older iMac with leopard...and got no problem at all.
I suspect it got something to do with my Ati...
(this is the second iMac 27...the first went back for gray banding on the lcd screen and flickering and yellow tinge........)
    Thanks for your help.
    DAve.

    maybe I'm onto something...
I've just found out that opening Preview in 32bit mode (instead of default 64bit) works flawlessly with any psd files. If I switch back to 64bit mode, Preview is much faster but the gray square comes back...
It seems like the i7 is much faster than the Ati....
    Any more realistic ideas?
