Problems estimating travel time

Whenever possible I try to add travel time to events in iCal.  One issue I am having is that seemingly during the week, no matter what time of day, I am only offered walking or driving time from the office to the location (never home).  Likewise, on the weekend, I am offered walking or driving time from home (not office).  I can choose the number of minutes I estimate, but I cannot figure out how to have iCal allow me to choose home when I want home or office when I want office.

Hello David M. Fresco,
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. Do you have any events that are up to three hours before this event? I think you may be running into the following:
Calendar finds your starting location by using the location in any events that are up to three hours before this event. If Calendar doesn’t find a location, it uses your work address or home address depending on the time of day. (Your work hours are set in Calendar preferences using the “Day starts at” and “Day ends at” menus.) If your card in Contacts doesn’t have your addresses, Calendar uses your computer’s current location.

  • Calendar Travel Time Starting from Work when I want to Start from Home

I am having a problem with travel time in Calendar. It will autopopulate with where it thinks I should be. I don't work during the daytime, and when I schedule in an entry for work, it wants to have me leaving from work. Is there any way to change it manually to start from home instead?

    From Calendar's help:
To set your starting location, Calendar first looks for your location in any events that are up to three hours before this event. If Calendar doesn’t find a location, it uses your work address during work hours and your home address during other hours. (Your work hours are set in Calendar preferences using the “Day starts at” and “Day ends at” menus.) If your card in Contacts doesn’t have your addresses, Calendar uses your computer’s current location.

  • Estimated Start time in notification based on Time defined in Work center

    Hi,
Following Satish post- I am trying to find solution to the same  problem so i will appreciate any advise.
When the notification is created ,the estimated start time should be based on priority .This in iteslf is pretty straight & simple. However if the reported time is after work hours or towards the end of work hours or weekends , the estimated start time should be reflected accordingly based on factory calender & work center time schedule.
In other words the estimated start time should fall within the window of work hours available.
    Example:
Presume the the working hours for the Organization are 8:00AM to 5:00 PM & a call comes for service at 4:00 PM. Also say , for high priority the defined response time is 5 hours. In such a instance the estimated start date should be set to next day at 11:00 AM.
Appreciate your help for the configuration that need to be done

    Hi,
I think ur talking about notification malfunction start time .. currently it just takes the system date and time by default .. and if you need work center timings i believe first u need the eqpt /F.loc to get the work center data in notificaiton ...
I think u can get these dates can be modified while saving by using user exit  : QQMA0014 QM/PM/SM: Checks before saving a notification or BADI   IF_EX_NOTIF_EVENT_SAVE , but at the same time the eqpt or F.loc have work center details in master record ...or work center needs to be entered manually in notification ..., pls check up ..

  • Query Estimated Completion Time

    Hello ,
Good Morning. I recently started supporting new set of databases from different team and I am having the problem of
figuring out how much time Stored procedure is going to take to complete?
Some of the queries take few hours and I am pretty much left in the dark and I don't have historical knowledge of those stored procedures.
I am trying to figure out is there any options available to figure out the estimated completion time for a given query or operation?.
How does other folks solve this problem?
    sys.dm_exec_requests DMV's estimated completion time is 0.
I understand the time to complete a query depends on numerous factors ( CPUS, other running processes, Preemptive/non preemptive mode, blocking, page reads, writes, etc ,etc ).
I am really interested in knowing how other people handle this problem because its new set of databases for me.
    Appreciate your help.
    Cheers,

Taken from Glenn Berry's excellent SQL Server Diagnostic Queries:
-- Top Cached SPs By Avg Elapsed Time
    SELECT TOP(25) p.name AS [SP Name], qs.total_elapsed_time/qs.execution_count AS [avg_elapsed_time],
    qs.total_elapsed_time, qs.execution_count, ISNULL(qs.execution_count/DATEDIFF(Second, qs.cached_time,
    GETDATE()), 0) AS [Calls/Second], qs.total_worker_time/qs.execution_count AS [AvgWorkerTime],
    qs.total_worker_time AS [TotalWorkerTime], qs.cached_time
FROM sys.procedures AS p WITH (NOLOCK)
INNER JOIN sys.dm_exec_procedure_stats AS qs WITH (NOLOCK)
    ON p.[object_id] = qs.[object_id]
    WHERE qs.database_id = DB_ID()
    ORDER BY avg_elapsed_time DESC OPTION (RECOMPILE);
This will give you an indicator of just how slow, the slowest Stored Procedures are in the Plan Cache.
You can easily tweak the above query to look at all historically executed SPs or filter for just those that you are interested in looking at.
Of course this is all retrospective information. The only way to know for sure how long a given stored procedure is going to take to run, is to run it.

  • Time machine preparing forever and spotlight estimating indexing time

    hey guys,
Im having two problems that seem to be related. time machine gets stuck on preparing with the following error in console:
    Jul 18 17:03:19 Macintosh-5 /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[6926]: Waiting for index to be ready (905 > 0)
Spotlight is also acting up and freezes indefinitely whilst estimating indexing time with the following console error:
Jul 18 17:03:44 Macintosh-5 mds[94]: (Error) Server: mdsync launch failed: (ipc/send) invalid destination port
I have not been able to find much on this last error on support forums. Any ideas? I have erased all spotlight indices, reset PRAM, this problems occurs when indexing both the internal and external hard drives. (The drive i am using for time machine has worked in the past.) I have also repaired disk permission etc. Any solutions without reinstalling leopard as the reason why i am trying to back up is so I can do a reinstall then!
    Thanks!

I had this exact problem yesterday (Waiting for index to be ready (905 > 0)). I rebooted with the shift key held down, rebooted again, and rebuilt my Spotlight index. Now there seems to be a conflict between Spotlight and Time Machine:
Aug 26 05:03:08 Musa /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[702]: Waiting for Spotlight to finish indexing /Volumes/Backup of Musa/Backups.backupdb
I thought of adding the backup drive to Spotlight's exclusion list, but doesn't the backup drive need to be indexed by Spotlight for it to work with Time Machine?

  • How do I switch Travel Time in Mac Calendar from work to home?

I recently installed Mavericks and have been using the new Travel Time feature in Calendar.  Today I ran into a problem, however.  I scheduled an appointment and put in the location address.  When I went to enter the travel time, it only gave me two options:  walking from work and driving from work.  There was no option for driving or walking from home.  This has never been a problem before.  What's going on here?

    From Calendar Help:
Choose to see travel time from your starting location to the event’s location.

  • How do I set up travel time in Calendar?

I have set up several events and included the event address.  When I click on the travel time box, the gear spins for a second or two and quits.  I then have a pull down that allows me to select an arbitrary amount of time.  Also, there doesn't seem to be any way to look at directions which I thought was an advertised feature.
Thanks for any assistance/adcive to can

Roger make sure you have location services turned in in System Preferences / Privacy and make sure the Calendar is checked.
As a test, I turned mine off and then I saw the same problems on the Calendar as you described. Once your turn them on, you should be able to add locations and a map will appear at the bottom of the screen where you edit the event details. You can double click the map to open Maps and get directions.
    Stephen. In reply to this:
Some events give me the Travel Time option, but only from "Work" and not "Home".  My actual work events don't give me the Travel Time option, maybe because iCal thinks I am already there?
I played around for a bit and think I found an answer. If I have no events on a day and I schedule one for anytime until 6:00pm, it will give the travel time from Work. If I add an event or change the time to 6:01pm or later, it will give the travel time from home.
If there are other events with locations already on the calendar and I add a new event reasonably close to one of them, it will give the travel time from the location of the previous event.
I haven't found a way to change the "from" location without adding another event or just typing in a travel time manually, but overall the automated system works pretty good.

  • Mavericks calendar travel time

There is a bug when I play with the travel time in Calendar. I select a travel time of 30 minutes for one event. Then I change it to "none" or 1 hour. I click apply. A few seconds later the travel time goes back to 30 minutes. No matter how many times I change the travel time, it always goes back to 30 minutes. It is extremely frustrating to see this happen. I would appreciate it if this gets received somehow to be fixed in a later update.

  • How does Calendar calculate travel times?

When I select the Travel Time function for an event in Calendar, it tells me there is a 35 minute travel time from home to my scheduled event destination. However, when I transfer over to the Maps application to get the directions from my home, the Maps application tells me the travel time is 52 minutes, which is more accurate.  I have no previous events on my calendar that the application could use as a reference point, and the time of the event is outside of the working hours I setup in Calendar, so it is not using my work location as a reference point.  What can explain the travel time discrepancy between Calendar and Maps?

If I understand the feature correctly, this is not an Exchange supported function.  Therefore, you won't be able to use this option for Exchange.  iCloud Cal supports it.  Interestingly, i too have both calendars and use exchange almost entirely as well - when I change to entering an exchange appt, the travel time option disappears totally.  It sounds like you have the options still available.
Sorry, no answer to your problem here but maybe this adds another piece of the puzzle.

  • Spotlight is "estimating indexing time" forever.

I just got this late 2010 Macbook Pro from a friend of mine after I broke my Macbook Air. I restored from Time Machine to get all my settings and files from the Air. Since I started up the computer two days ago, it has been "estimating indexing time" on spotlight search. I use spotlight search often so I really need to know how to get it unstuck from this loop! There was a CD in the computer, but I took it out and now I don't see what could be causing the problem.
I tried using sudo mdutil -a -i off and on, It still appears to be estimating forever.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Ok so turns out it was a special case, someone did something to this Macbook at some point in its life that kind of messed up the hard drive and then spotlight could not index it. Apple Support helped me and now all is well!

  • Calendar travel time and places

    1. I keep my working schedule in Calendar. How can I tell Calendar that I return back home after work? With travel time activated it always calculates travel time from my office instead from my home. My office is north of my home, most private events happen south of my home, so the time difference can be as much as 30min. Work finishes at 5pm, I'm home at 5:20 and I have an event at 7pm 20min away from home. Calendar now tells me I have 40min to drive instead of just 20, because it thinks I'm still at work even though the event "Work" has ended at 5pm...
    2. Calendar does not find places even though I use the exact same phrase as it's shown in Maps. One example is the Belgian race track "Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps". I know there are work-arounds for this problem as I could just use the next town. But there are places where simply no town is around. Take the English racetrack of "Cadwell Park" for example. Typing "Cadwell Park" suggests a place in Georgia instead of the English racetrack that shows up as a POI in Maps.
I have the same problem with a local restaurant. Again, I know where the place is, but for user comfort I'd like to have Calendar regocnize POI's shown in Maps.

  • Calendar travel time affected by others

    Hi
Just updated laptop (MacBook Air) and MacMini (acting as server) to Yosemite.  All good, except noticed that when I want to enter travel time into the calendar (hosted on my server) which is usually taken automatically from my previous appointment or home address, it uses the address of a colleague (also using the server).
This colleague's calendar is not selected - but when looking at the travel time it would appear that her appointments are having an affect!
I did look for a 'button' to advise Apple - but couldn't see it.
Anyone else found this calendar problem??

  • Calendar travel time location

When I create a calendar item in Mavericks it is calculating my travel time from work however I will be traveling from home. How do I update the location for the travel time calculation?

  • Calendar travel time alerts syncing wrong...

Calendar Alerts that I set up on my Macbook Pro are not sinking properly with the Calendar App on my iOS devices. For instance: If my travel time is 54 minutes and I set-up an alert for 1 hour before my travel time on my MacBook Pro, then my iOS calendar alert syncs the alert for 1 hour and 54 minutes before my travel time.

    hi Jake,
i am having exactly the same problem with my new iphone 4 updated to 4.0.2, I set the reminder to go off at a certain time and it goes off a couple of hours later, or as you say, it goes off when you open the calendar. Mine tells me GMT +1 for some reason. BOth computer and iphone set to the correct time.

  • Spotlight hung, displays "Estimating Indexing Time" indefinitely

After I used iPhoto Library Manager, Dup Annihilator, and Thumbnail Annihilator, I have seen Spotlight crippled with this endless "Estimating Indexing Time" message. I removed an external hard drive after seeing this message, but this didn't help. I re-installed Snow Leopard--likewise, no help. What can I do? Help Appleheads!

If the problem is indeed iPhoto, you can go to the Spotlight prefs pane, open the Privacy tab, and put the iPhoto Library into it. That will remove it from Spotlight's indexing attempts. If Spotlight is then able to finish indexing you will know for sure that the problem is iPhoto. If that turns out to be the case, follow Barry's advice and post about the problem in the iPhoto forum.
