Problems experienced by former Windows users

Over the last few weeks I have read many posts from those who have the desire to open the folder that contains the originals of their photos. Some tinkered with this folder and turned to Discussions for help when problems ensued. The thing that many seem to have in common is that they were previously using Windows. That has been very evident over the last few days. Is there any way a warning can be posted in a prominent place for these recent converts? Something like: "Attention former Windows users! DO NOT open the originals folder of your iPhoto library. If you do so, you will probably damage your photos." I am sure that someone else could come up with a better wording.
Just a thought.......

Post that suggestion at http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html.

  • Former Windows user

    Hi
    I am a former Windows user and really like my Mac! COuple questions though:
    1. In Windows IE, you could type the site name, hit Ctrl ENTER, and IE would add the prefix 'Http://' and the suffix '.com' to whatever you typed. For instance: Myspace, Ctrl ENTER becomes Http://myspace.com. Can this be done on a Mac too?
    2. Whenever I am on a site and click the URL line, the cursor sits at the end of the line in append mode. I would like the whole URL line highlighted so that as I type, the full line gets replaced, instead of having to back space then type the new line.
    3. The DELETE key just deletes info to the left of the cursor. Is there a key combo that will delete from the point of the cursor to the right?
    Thanks
    Rich

    Hi Rich,
    1. Just hit Return- Safari (and Firefox) will automatically fill in the rest assuming it starts with www and ends with .com. (This doesn't always work if you're using OpenDNS.)
    3. Hold down function and hit delete. If you've got a full Apple keyboard, use the delete key two keys under the F14 key.
    Good luck and congrats on your move- you won't regret it!

  • Problem with invitation to windows users

    Hello,
    When I send an invitation through iCal to a Pc/Windows user, he can't open the invitation and put it in outlook. Have you any idea about that problem ?
    Thanks
    Gilles.

    A new information about my problem : it seems to be a problem of 'lunar calendar' or a problem of encoding.

  • Problems video chatting with Windows users

    It seems like everytime I try and video chat with a Windows AIM user there is a problem. Ralph and other are very techy and know how to resolve these issues. Problem is that 99.9999999% of te people I chat with are not so the advice to resolve these issues proves to be worthless. However me and this individual were able to successfully do audio chat instead. Often when there is a problem like this do I switch people over to Skype which works far better going from Windows to Mac and vice versa and is easier to use. Generally I think iChat has better video quality over Skype, but only with Mac users.
    I know there are others here that also have this problem and for you do I encourage the same resolution as bad as it is, but it seems to be the only way to chat with a non techy person who is on a PC.

    Hi,
    Any non Microsoft app on a PC has to allowed through the Firewall as a Exception  (Or at least since Service Pack 2 for XP when Windows got a firewall).
    In XP it goes like this
    Open the Control Panels (I prefer the classic view)
    Open the Firewall
    Click the Exceptions tab
    In the new window click the Add Button
    Navigate through Program Files to the AIM Folder and the relevant AIM#.exe to allow the app itself. (#  is the Version Master number)
    Back in the Exceptions window also Allow UPnP
    Enable UPnP in their Router.
    I am not sure it is that different in Vista or Window 7
    If there router does not have UPnP then open port 5190 and 1024-5000  (AIM video does not use all of these they are there to spread the load)
    They would have to do similar things for Skype (although like AIM it has Fall Back ports below 1024 for logging in and Text Chatting that get around the firewall issue) other IM apps and On-line Games.
    Of course if they are using some third party Firewall they would have to do the work there.
    Audio Chats V VIdeo Chats
    Both apps use the same ports when it comes to Audio and Video Chats  (Tend to be the iChat ones)
    I believe AIM still uses 4 ports (from the 1024-5000 range) for VId In, Vid Out, Audio In, Audio out, much the same way iChat 2 and 3 did.
    It may pay for you to go to iChat > Preferences > Video Section > Bandwidth limit and try either 500kbps or 200kbps as the setting.
    In earlier version of AIM (5.5 anbd 5.9) it was possible to reduce the Video quality at the AIM end (less frames per second) which allowed "Space" for the Audio part.
    AIM 6.x onwards does not have this and the Video feed can be particularly Processor hungry.  Your lower setting will be fed back to them and their end will make an adjustment of what can be sent.
    Some of this knowledge has taken me since 2004 to acquire.
    I can see that applying it might be considered "techy"
    I can appreciate that it can be very difficult to persuade a Windows user to change any setting once they have their machine "working" (at least as they want).
    I realise this was not so much of a Question as being more of a discussion statement.
    I am not sure that there is a real answer other than the one you suggest.

  • Problem to close Form window

    I want to close Form portlet window after the user has pressed Insert.
    I have added code go('javascript:self.close();') into onSuccess section. This works fine when I'm using Netscape but not in IE 6. Method self.close (or window.close) works fine in IE when I'm using it e.g. in UIF templates.
    Does anyone know any trick how to close Form window after successful (Insert) operation?
    Regards
    Rainer

    I found solution myself. I inserted illegally formatted URL in to onSuccess field, and I managed to debug error. The portal is trying to call page http://server:7778/pls/portal/javascript:window.close();
    My solution was to write a simple HTML page:
    <html><body onLoad="self.close();"></body></html>
    whose URL is written into onSuccess field.
    Please comment, if you find possible errors in this solution.

  • Dock Questions From a (Former) Windows User

    Hi, I recently replaced my Windows machine with a Macbook. For the most part, I'm happy with the switch, but I can't help but feel there are a few things I miss from Windows.
    For instance, the Start Menu. I've gotten so used to having it from my PC days -- is there something like it that I can download for OS X? Having everything in a single click would make the transition much easier for me.
    My second issue is a bit difficult to explain. I work with a lot of Firefox windows while browsing the Internet; on a PC, if you have several browser windows open, they're all displayed seperately on the taskbar. But on Mac OS X, extra Firefox windows don't appear as a seperate objects on the Dock unless you actually hit the minimize button. Is there a way that extra windows -- whether it's multiple Word documents or multiple Excel spreadsheets -- can each appear on the Dock, seperately? It'd make it all easier to navigate. At least, for a previous Windows user.

    Hello,
    I understand where you are coming from, I just switched from YEARS of PC use to my Macbook last month.
    After fighting OS X for weeks, the best thing to do really is to get used to using F9 (or for your Firefox example F10 which will display just the windows from the program that is currently "active" instead of all windows with F9).
    I know youre not a keyboard guy but trust me this works great. Also on my PC I used alt-tab like it was my job, and luckily apple-tab does the same thing. Another nice trick to go through your firefox windows is to use apple-`(right above tab).
    As for the start menu thing, I havent missed it one bit. I recommend replacing the start menu with apple-spacebar. This will bring spotlight up and just start typing the program and it will appear at the top of the list in about 1/10 the time (seriously) as it would going through the start menu. But if you really want to stray away from the keyboard then moving applications to the dock is a good suggestion and you could also clutter your desktop with aliases (shortcuts). Use F11 (**** ANOTHER keyboard shortcut) to show your desktop.
    Good luck!

  • Brand new macbook, former windows user

    i just switched to mac from windows. i haven't actually received my computer yet (it shipped yesterday) but i've been doing some reading... i came across a website that recommended creating an "administrator" account and then a separate one for personal use so i don't accidentally change things i don't want to change. is this necessary or a good idea?
    macbook

    Welcome to Mac and these boards.
    Not required at all.
    The first time you turn your mac on you will be taken through the setup. you will create a user. this user will have admin privileges. all that means is that you can make system setting changes - it's good to be the admin
    also, it will ask you for a user name and password - you do not have to put a password in if you don't want to (if you are the only one who uses the computer)

  • Former Windows user has basic questions...

    Hey everyone:
    I purchased my first Mac - a black MacBook laptop - last week. Up to this point, I've used Windows PCs. I am getting frustrated with my Mac because I can't figure out some basic navigational functions. Please help!
    Is it possible to add a desktop icon to the Dock on my MacBook laptop? I frequently have to access items in the Macintosh HD. On my IBM I could just add a desktop icon to the bottom nav bar or double-click on the desktop itself to access it. On my MacBook end up having to hit F11 to get there. F11 is fine - except that I don't want to close all the open applications windows. Is there a way to either (1) add a desktop (or Macintosh HD) icon to my dock?
    Also, is there a way to navigate open application windows easily (i.e. if I have 3 Firefox windows open and want to surf back and forth between them)? I though the apple key + the ~ key would allow that - but it's not working on my laptop.
    Also, in Excel - if it possible to navigate to a cell with a formula and click something that highlights the other cells being referenced for the formula? On my IBM, hitting F2 shows the formula and highlights the referenced cells in different colors. My MacBook Excel only shows the formula...
    Thanks!!

    Scatterman,
    For Photoshop, you might find this info helpful. Also, you might get everything you need from GIMP (open source, free software that does everything Photoshop will do), or one of the products based on it.
    It sounds like you would benefit from some quality time spent just "feeling out" the OS X way of doing things, without necessarily jumping right in and trying to work, work, work. Take a bit more time, and pay attention to the little details that you might otherwise overlook.
    For example, Expose. Pressing F11 will not close any windows, but it will quickly "wisk" them off the display so you can grab something on your Desktop. Once grabbed, another press of F11 brings all the windows back, just the way they were, and you can place your grabbed item where you like.
    Also, drag and drop is more pervasive, goes way deeper, and is more flexible than in Windows. Items (files, folders, etc.) can be dragged into the Dock, but they can also be to either the Finder's Side Bar (left side) or Tool Bar (top) to create semi-permanent "shortcuts." Selected text in any application window can be dragged out of that window to your Desktop (or anywhere else in the Finder) to create "clippings" that work just like the clipboard (cut and paste), only creating semi-permanent "clipping files" that can be dragged into any other application window. I have entire collections of these "text clippings" that I use to populate my forum replies (instructions, links, commands, etc.).
    In general, just about anything you are accustomed to in Windows is available in OS X, but it may look and/or feel different. In the end, however, it usually works better/easier/faster the OS X way. Keep looking, check Help, or ask here, and be patient in the meantime. Before you know it, you'll be an OS X wiz!

  • Unable to get Windows User Name using Oracle Forms 6i, Jinitiator 1.3.1.17

    Hi,
    Requirement: Get Windows User Name using Oracle Web Forms 6i.
    Tools Using: Windows NT, Oracle web forms 6i, Oracle 10g DB.
    Description: I am using GetClientInfo JBean from otn.oracle.com, which gets windows user name, IP address and machine name. The demo I got from oracle web site uses Jinitiator version 1.1.7.18. While we are using the latest version Jinitiator 1.3.1.17. Due to this reason, I am unable to use Javakey which comes with older version but doesn't come with newer version, that's why I can't create the new JavaBean Java identity (PJC).
    Please advise what to do. All environment variables are set everything is done, this is the only thing bothering me.
    I went through the article 202768.1 from metalink, but on step 5, it gives an error keytool error: java.lang.Exception: Input not an X.509 Certificate.
    Also, please let me know if there is any other workaround for this requirement.
    Thanks & Best Regards,
    Mo

    Hi,
    Thanks for your kind reply. Actually there was a problem in creating a certificate, now it is okay with the same method. Certificate got imported on client and everything is ready.
    Now, the problem is when I try to set Bean Area Implementation Class property with oracle.forms.demos.GetClientInfo, it gives an error FRM-13008 Cannot find JavaBean with name 'oracle.forms.demos.GetClientInfo'.
    I went through the articles 1072329.6, 196824.1, and set ClassPath and Path variables with proper values. Also, I have copied jar file and signature file in forms60/java folder. I don't see any problems. Please let me know what I am doing wrong. My limitation is that I have to do all this in forms6i.
    I searched forums on metalink and found out that someone installed Patch 15, and everything went okay for him. Do you think I should install Patch 15? if YES, how will I do it, I mean should I first uninstall my forms and then install patch15 or install the patch on my forms?
    Thanks so much for your help.
    Thanks & Best Regards,
    Mo

  • Outlook window getting the keyboard focus instead of user created Form Window during Outlook Startup

    This MAPILogonComplete method involves creating a Form Window to show "What's New" of a certain Addin version (DisplayWhatsNewDialog() in the code):
    private void _outlook_MAPILogonComplete() {
    _logger.Info("_outlook_MAPILogonComplete");
    try
    if (_timerForm != null)
    _timerForm.Timer.Stop();
    _timerForm.Timer.Dispose();
    catch (Exception ex2)
    _logger.Error(ex2.Message, ex2);
    try
    if (Globals.BJNSettings.showWhatsNew)
    Globals.BJNSettings.showWhatsNew = false;
    UIHelper.DisplayWhatsNewDialog(false);
    Ol.Inspector insp = null;
    if (_inspectors.Count > 0)
    for (int i = _inspectors.Count; i >= 1; i--)
    insp = _inspectors[i];
    WrapInspector(insp);
    insp = null;
    Ol.Explorer expl = null;
    if (_explorers.Count > 0)
    for (int i = _explorers.Count; i >= 1; i--)
    expl = _explorers[i];
    WrapExplorer(expl);
    expl = null;
    GetAddinsList();
    Thread logSystemInfoThread = new Thread(new ThreadStart(LogSystemInformation));
    logSystemInfoThread.TrySetApartmentState(ApartmentState.STA);
    logSystemInfoThread.IsBackground = true;
    logSystemInfoThread.Start();
    try
    Ol.NameSpace ns = _outlook.GetNamespace("MAPI");
    _calFolder = ns.GetDefaultFolder(Ol.OlDefaultFolders.olFolderCalendar) as Ol.Folder;
    _calFolder.BeforeItemMove += new Ol.MAPIFolderEvents_12_BeforeItemMoveEventHandler(_calFolder_BeforeItemMove);
    _delFolder = ns.GetDefaultFolder(Ol.OlDefaultFolders.olFolderDeletedItems) as Ol.Folder;
    Marshal.ReleaseComObject(ns);
    ns = null;
    catch (Exception ex)
    _logger.Error(ex.Message, ex);
    UIHelper.WriteDoNotDisableKeyToRegistry();
    Globals.AppointmentsToProcess = new List<string>();
    _timerForm.ProcessTimer.Interval = 3000;
    _timerForm.ProcessTimer.Start();
    catch (Exception ex)
    _logger.Error(ex.Message, ex);
    DisplayWhatsNewDialog() has this signature:
    public static void DisplayWhatsNewDialog(bool modal)
    try
    string defaultWhatsNewFile = Globals.BJN_APP_BASE_DIRECTORY + "WhatsNew.txt";
    string localISOLanguageName = Languages.GetTwoLetterISOLanguageName();
    string localizedWhatsNewFile = Languages.GetInstalledLocalizedFilePath(localISOLanguageName, "WhatsNew.txt");
    if (String.IsNullOrEmpty(localizedWhatsNewFile))
    localizedWhatsNewFile = defaultWhatsNewFile;
    if (File.Exists(localizedWhatsNewFile))
    BJNWhatsNew whatsNew = new BJNWhatsNew(localizedWhatsNewFile);
    if (modal)
    whatsNew.ShowDialog();
    whatsNew.Dispose();
    else
    whatsNew.TopMost = true;
    whatsNew.Show();
    whatsNew = null;
    catch (Exception ex)
    _logger.Error(ex.Message, ex);
    The problem is if the Window is made modal, it blocks the Outlook to launch and also goes back of the Outlook loading window (Whats New window will not be having keyboard focus). And if the Window is made non-modal (passing false to DisplayWhatsNewDialog()),
    Outlook launches properly and What's New window comes at the top but will not be having keyboard focus; instead the launched Outlook window will be having the keyboard focus. May anyone please suggest a way to make the What's New window to be always having
    the keyboard focus? Structure of form window class BJNWhatsNew is given below:
    public partial class BJNWhatsNew : Form
    private static ILog _logger = LogManager.GetLogger(typeof(BJNWhatsNew));
    public BJNWhatsNew(string whatsNewTextFileName)
    InitializeComponent();
    InitLabels();
    InitEventHandlers();
    InitWhatsNew(whatsNewTextFileName);
    private void InitLabels()
    try
    this.Text = Properties.Resources.bjn_version_info_caption;
    this.buttonClose.Text = Properties.Resources.ok_hotkey;
    this.labelBJNAddin.Text = Properties.Resources.bjn_version_ol_addin;
    this.labelVersion.Text = String.Format(Properties.Resources.version_format, Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly().GetName().Version.ToString(3));
    Assembly assembly = Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly();
    FileInfo fileInfo = new FileInfo(assembly.Location);
    DateTime buildDate = fileInfo.LastWriteTime;
    string formatString = "d MMM, yyyy";
    this.labelReleaseDate.Text = String.Format(Properties.Resources.bjn_version_release_date, buildDate.ToString(formatString));
    catch (Exception ex)
    _logger.Error(ex.Message, ex);
    private void InitEventHandlers()
    this.buttonClose.Click += new EventHandler(buttonClose_Click);
    private void InitWhatsNew(string whatsNewTextFileName)
    try
    if (File.Exists(whatsNewTextFileName))
    StreamReader sr = new StreamReader(whatsNewTextFileName);
    string whatsNew = sr.ReadToEnd();
    sr.Close();
    this.richTextBox1.Text = whatsNew;
    this.richTextBox1.SelectionLength = 0;
    this.buttonClose.Select();
    this.buttonClose.Focus();
    catch (Exception ex)
    _logger.Error(ex.Message, ex);
    void buttonClose_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)

    Hello Prasad,
    The ShowDialog method will block the current thread. If you want to continue working with Outlook objects you need to use the Show method instead. The key fact is that both methods (Show and ShowDialog) accepts an instance of the IWin32Window interface
    which allows to specify the parent window handle. Specifying the parent window handle (Outlook Explorer window) to the Show method you can make your window shown on top of Outlook all the time.
    To get the HWND of an Outlook explorer  object (e.g. Application.ActiveExplorer), cast it to IOleWindow and call IOleWindow.GetWindow(). Also you may find the
    How to get the IWin32Window for Outlook

  • ISight - connects with windows users no problem?

    I'd like to buy this webcam, but I heard it has problems connecting with windows users. Will I be able to talk to people on it through AIM? Thats what I'd like, if not, I probably wont get it. Anyone have any personal experience or have any answers or helpful tips - I'd appreciate anything - thanks.

    It is not the iSight itself that gives you the impression that connecting with Micros~1 Windows users causes problems ... it is the availability of (cross platform) applications that makes connecting a bit more cumbersome.
    I have PowerMac G5 with iSight and I connect with my Micros~1 Windows platform family equiped with and without USB webcam.
    The challenge will be to find messaging / VoiP applications with bearable audio quality and reasonable video performance.
    I started with Skype for Voice and Yahoo! messenger for bad video ( 1-2 fps and video size 320 x 240).
    Skype has a video plugin (only for Windows)
    Yahoo! Messenger does not have voice yet (2.5.3)
    MSN is badmouthing because of the "M"
    I have used iChat with another Apple believer ... and the quality of Voice and Video is unparralled.
    The best two alternatives I found are:
    a) AIM 5.9
    b) Trillian (www.trillian.cc)
    Both use a free AIM screen name.
    AIM works fine, see also EZJim pages.
    TrillianPro 3.1 reuses AIM screen names ... and ... it has both good audio and zoom-to-full-screen-video size with fps rates filling your bandwidth.
    The only negative on Trillian so far, the "handshake" for connecting two people takes some time.
    TrillianBase is free but has no Video capabilities. The Pro version is 25$.

  • Problem in installing Forms 6 on Windows 2000

    I have problem in installing forms 6 on windows 2000.
    Please advise me.
    null

    Hello,
    I've been using Dev 2000 ver 6i for several months sucessfully on Win 2K RC2. The compiled .fmx's work fine with the ver 6.0 runtime environment under NT 4.0.
    The only problem is that the Forms Server won't work till the 1st patch set comes out
    (only Oracle knows when!) , so you can't test or deploy the forms as web apps on Win 2K yet. OAS 4.0 appears to work ok on Win 2K.
    I have been using the Beta version of Dev 6i and will upgrade to the release version eventually, probably when the patch comes out.

  • Problems with the System.Windows.Forms.Timer

    Hi All,
    Could some one help me please? I'm having a problem using the System.Windows.Forms.Timer inside an ItemEvent, the timer event just doesn't works...give a look in my code:
    private System.Windows.Forms.Timer myTimer = new System.Windows.Forms.Timer();
    if (pVal.FormUID.Equals("FrmTimer") && pVal.ItemUID.Equals("btnStartTimer") && (pVal.Before_Action.Equals(true)) && (pVal.EventType.Equals(SAPbouiCOM.BoEventTypes.et_CLICK)))
                myTimer .Interval = 1000;
                myTimer .Enabled = true;
                myTimer .Tick += new EventHandler(myTimer _Tick);
    void myTimer _Tick(object sender, EventArgs e)
                SBO_Application.MessageBox("Timer: " + DateTime.Now, 1, "OK", "", "");
    does someone have already tried to use the timer inside an itemevent, or could suggest another solution?
    thanks a lot...

    Hi Bruno,
    Unfortunately you cannot use a Forms.Timer without using a windows form (ie not a SBO form). Have you looked at the other 2 timer objects in .Net, the System.Timer.Timer and System.Threading.Timer? Here's a link to a web page that goes through the differences between each one:

  • Problems accesing files in Mac Mini for Windows users.

    We have a Mac Mini that we use as a data server in our network. Our main server is Windows and most of the users are Windows users.
    At first, we had dificulties for connecting this Windows users to the server, but finally we did it and they have been working good accesing the files on the server, until last saturday when we run an update on the server.
    All the privileges for files and folders were distorted and the users that acces the server with Windows 7 and 8, can't open some files and can't modify others (there is a warning that says that the file is in use by another user and can only be read).
    We already re asigned the privileges for each user and folders, but we are still having problems with users that work with Windows 7 and 8 because they can not open any file. Windows XP users do not have this problem and they are working fine.
    Can someone help me with this issue?

    Since XP works & Win7&8 do not, I wonder if disabling SMBv2 & above might fix it...
