Problems finishing startup after login
Hi everyone,
Looking for some advice in getting my dad's MacBook functioning properly. There's something wrong with... something. I've attached a thorough log, complete with everything from Console, detailing our endeavors over the course of a few hours. Here's the skinny:
- A few days ago, dad's MacBook spontaneously started hanging (or so it appeared) after successfully logging into his main account
- The screen saver will load if left alone; otherwise, nothing seems to be going on
- He and I talked over the phone; it SOUNDED like a bad hard drive, but I couldn't see what was going on. I advised he go buy a new internal drive (SSD--they're nice and wicked fast) and a backup drive and try to reclaim what he could
- A tech at MacAuthority in his town, after looking at the computer, deduced it was NOT a hard drive failure, but more likely a corruption somewhere in the startup process after the login
- He can start up in his main account if he boots in Safe Boot
- He created a "test" account, which starts up fine in regular boot
Today I decided to "lay hands" on the machine and see what was really going on. After multiple boots in regular and safe boot, examining Console results, and taking actions against issues that SEEMED to be likely culprits, I'm at a loss. Any ideas what could be going on?

Seriously? No one out there with a clue what might be going on here?

My MacBook Air wont startup after login
my MacBook Air wont startup after login???
Try to boot your computer in Safe Mode: restart and hold the shift key down.
This can take some time, so be patient.
Explanation here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564
If thyis leads to the computer booting, you can restart without holding the shift key down. -
Screen Goes Black During Startup (after login)
Hello,
I have a 2005 Mac Mini PPC OS 10.4.11. This is the first problem I've had since purchasing the computer. This problem popped up out of nowhere. The screen goes black during startup just after I login into my account. I can hear the hard drive spin like it is finishing the startup process. The monitor power button blinks green.
I'm using the digital video cable. I tried switching to the VGA cable but the screen then goes black before the login screen.
The computer will startup in Safe mode.
I've tried Disk Utility (repair disk and repair permissions), Techtool Pro, Drive Genius, ColorSync Utility, Reset Pram, installed latest OS updates, and even re-installed the System twice (once because I removed all the Extension files and then the computer would not startup at all).
I've also tried removing cache files, plist files, startup files, preference files, and some or all of extension files.
The only applications I have recently installed were QuickTime Pro and a .flv movie player; both about a week before this problem started. I tried to uninstall them but could not figure out how.
What is the problem? How can this be fixed?
Thanks.
RichardHowdy. I have Had the same problem as you in regards to a ViewSonic Monitor and the Mac Mini. This is my post:
Monitor failure when switching resolutions
Using Displays with the Mac mini, Apr 1, 2008, Replies: 2
Running 10.5.2 on Mac Mini G4 1.42 Ghz with ATI Radeon 9200, 32 MB VRAM and ViewSonic VX922
When switching resolutions from 1280x1024 to 800x600 or vice versa, the monitor will cut to black and the power light on the monitor switches from solid green to flashing green. Only by combinations of powering down the mini and starting it up again with the monitor on or off will bring the monitor back to life. This problem makes it difficult to play World of Warcraft amongst other games. Any feedback in regards to this problem would be appreciated.
Thank You!
At this point, I am unable to switch Monitor resolutions. If I do, the monitor goes black, and I have to power everything down and wait a while before I can restart.
I've resigned myself to not switching resolutions, but I'm wondering if you've had any luck.
Thanks for your time!

[Solved] KDE4 won´t finish loading after login-in with KDM
I have been trying to solve this for a while but I'm still struggling to solve it. The problem is that I can't successfully start KDE4; after trying to log as a normal user with a password the loading screen that shows the KDE icons (a harddrive, some tools and a globe) it gets stuck on the desktop icon.
I could load KDE once, but I had to start X first and then use the xterm to call startkde, nevertheless it didn't asked for a user/pass and there was no menu visible only the desktop with the computer icon. (Not to mention I had to start it manually.)
This are the points that are currently apply to my machine:
KDE was installed as the normal user with sudo.
It was installed using the minimal install command: pacman -S kdebase kde-l10n-es phonon-vlc kdebase-workspace.
Right now I'm trying to start KDE at boot by using the inittab method. As suggested in here.
Because of it, if I try to run startx it will load kdm which will then try to load KDE without success.
This is the .xinitrc file in my user folder.
exec ck-launch-session startkde

I believe that the most important file here is the xsession-error, and as I have said the file is cut at last line that appeared before the KDE got stuck, in case it is not enough info just tell me how much should I let it run.
Any suggestions?
Last edited by r_dlfo (2011-05-12 02:14:35)Compositing is needed for the desktop effects, everything from shadows under windows to things like the desktop cube. Its difficult to say whether its a nvidia or kde bug since I was just going on guesswork; I know that compositing is started at about the point you mention the freezes. I don't know how far KDE loaded when you started it manually since I don't really recognise your description of what it was like but I'd guess that some other window manager (twm perhaps if you've been following the wiki) was already running, in which case kwin (which does the compositing) would not have started.
Since desktop effects really improve the look and feel of kde (things like shadows and improved window switchers, desktop cube and the like are pure eye-candy) you may wish to debug further. Your graphics card should be able to run desktop effects as I have a laptop with a previous generation nvidia chip which runs fine after a bit of tweaking.
If you load the desktop effects section of system settings you should see a checkbox "Enable desktop effects" if you check that you'll be able to switch to the "All effects" tab. Try disabling the Blur effect and clicking "Apply". If kwin still can enable compositing you'll see a box with a countdown that will automatically disable desktop effects again if you don't choose to keep the new settings. You might also want to try changing the scale method from "Accurate" to "Smooth" in the advanced tab. -
Windows 8.1 Problem - Blank Screen after Login but Cursor Works and Limited Functionality
I have a Sony Vaio All in One Touch Screen. It is running Windows 8.1 and today I can't get to the Desktop or see the normal windows Metro interface. I get a black screen and I can move the cursor around, using various keys I can get Task Manager and
Explorer and some limited help functions up, but not the standard Windows Desktop or Metro interface. Any thoughts?Hi MrBradyBunch,
The situation you descripted should be related to a service or software conflict, as well as a hardware driver problem, to confirm this, try to boot your computer in safe mode, Safe mode Starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and services:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-including-safe-mode
if the problem disappear, indeed, this should be caused by a service a hardware driver, you can log on in normal mode and perform a clean boot to fix this:
1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search.
2. Type msconfig in the search box, and then tap or click msconfig.
The detailed steps can be found at:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
If the problem doesn't reappear when you start in safe mode, you can eliminate the default settings and basic device drivers and services as possible causes, you shoud turn to the computer vendor where you purchased the computer for harware support.

Problems with startup after software update
I have just done a software update on my system, and now going back to my computer 2 hours later and turning it on, all I get is the grey screen with the apple and dial spinning...........
Also the fans in the tower are going nuts.
Is this normal for updates since leopard, seeing as I have never had this happen to me beforeNo, that's not normal. It could be hardware. Shutdown.
Run Apple Hardware Test:
1. Disconnect all external devices from your iMac except the keyboard and mouse.
If you have an Ethernet cable connected, disconnect it.
2. Insert the Mac OS X Install Disc 1 that came with your iMac.
3. Restart your iMac and hold down the D key as your iMac starts up.
4. When the Apple Hardware Test chooser screen appears, select the language
appropriate for your location.
5. Press the Return key or click the right arrow button.
6. When the Apple Hardware Test main screen appears (after about 45 seconds), follow
the onscreen instructions.
7. Apple Hardware Test displays an error code if it detects a problem. Make a note of the
error code before pursuing support options.

MacBook Pro mid 2013 13' gets stuck on White screen after login.
I'm in safe mode right now. I Booted it up in Safe Mode by holding down the shift key during startup. What do I do now to not get the white/grey screen during startup after login?
Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup
If the grey screen occurs when you boot normally (not safe mode) try bypassing your Login Items by holding a Shift key in the same manner during login (i.e. not during boot). If you can log in, you effectively isolated the problem to one of more of your Login Items. -
My Mac started doing this a few weeks ago, where after login it all kind of collapses. Sometimes the desktop icons won't show up, or Hear (which runs on startup) will get stuck loading for a long time. Sometimes everything seems fine but no programs will launch, or the dock won't respond.
So far I've done an Onyx cleanup run, a Disk Verify and Repair, Permissions Verify and Repair and even did the good old Command+R on startup and reinstalled Lion. It worked the first time and then it went back to its old antics.
Any ideas? I'm afraid if its a corrupted file and even if I get a new Mac (this one has gone through all kinds of things, including getting catapulted out of my backpack into the street in Hungary) then when I restore from Time Machine it'll carry over.
ThanksIf a new user solved the issue, then you either have too many apps starting up at login and/or at least one which puts problems. In order to see what you have there go to system preferences/users and groups/you/login items, you must have a short list, as attached.
If not too many here, then you may have a corrupt system. -

Blue screen after login and HD and startup disk is full -how to erase data?
Blue screen after login and Hard drive and startup disk is full -How do I get in to erase data?
this user tip might help:
Your Mac needs adequate hard drive space to operate normally. How full can a drive be before it's too full? There is no hard and fast rule that says “X” amount or “%” of free drive space is needed. A low amount of RAM requires more drive space for Virtual Memory’s swap files.
Problems from insufficient RAM and free hard disk space are discussed in this link
http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/lackofram.html
Here’s some general guidelines for minimum hard drive free space:
1. As a general rule, your available space should be 5GB as an absolute minimum as it generally requires that much free space to perform an Archive and Install of Mac OS X and still preserve some free space for VM swap files.
2. Some say that your hard drive should have at least 5% of it's capacity available for use. Still others say 10% to 15%. If you routinely process complex graphics and videos, even more space is required.
Look at these links about freeing up more space.

There is a problem on my mac mini. I install windows7 in my mac then i cancelled the installation did not finish..after that i saw the black screen on my monitor untill now the monitor is black..
It maybe trying to boot from the incomplete install.
Try starting your Mac while holding down the Option key, it should then list all the available boot drives including the Mac OS X one. Boot from the Mac one and then you can wipe the damaged PC one or set the Mac to stay booting in to OS X. -
Hi, I got the problem with Firefox 27.0.1. I can not run Selenium on Firefox after login a website for automation testing. The browser is not responding. However when I close Nunit, the page is back to be normal. The title is returned to the name of website without "not responding". I sure this problem did not happen on Firefox version 26. I just got this problem when firefox upgrading automatically to version 27. Please help me fix this problem because it is very important for my work. If you need more information pls send your concerns via my email address.
Thanks so muchHi, the work around suggested above should put you in working mode in the meantime. However to help investigate the issue it is possible to analyze what is not loading or taking a long time by analyzing the network traffic or http headers of the Nunit web page.

I have a slow startup or login, with numerious spinning wheels. Sometimes after a long ti,e I can sign into the computer and sometimes it just fails to startup or login. I have a MacBookPro OS X 10.7.5 from 2011. It became more serious recently as I think I might have let my battery run out I also tried to download the operating system to reinstall it but it allways stops around 1.4 GB out of 1.7 then the whell starts again.
Keep the MBP attached to the power adapter.
First try SMC and PRAM resets:
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
Then try to boot the MBP in recovery (OPTION key down) and select the recover partition. Select Disk Utility>First Aid and verify and repair the HDD.

Problems auto-connecting after sleep & startup (Changed from WPA to WEP)
Okay, I know there have been several issues similar to this, but after two days of sifting through posts, I still can't resolve this.
A few days ago I switched my AirPort network security from WPA to WEP-128. This was required to allow my Nintendo DS to connect to the netwrok, by the way. After the change, two similar, but slightly different problems started:
My 15" PowerBook G4 no longer auto-connects to the network at startup. The network is listed in the drop-down, and connects with no problem when I choose it manually. The computer seems to have no problem re-connecting after waking from sleep, which is odd because...
My other PowerBook, a 12" G4, won't auto-connect at startup AND won't re-connect after sleep. As above, it has no problem connecting using the Keychain once the network is selected from the drop-down.
So far I have tried, on both machines:
- trashing the system airport prefs
- deleting and resetting the network's keychain entry
- repairing the keychain (no errors found)
- turning off some unneeded power mgt options
- disconnecting USB peripherals
I have also reloaded the software on both my AirPort Extreme base and my AirPort Express hub, as well as restarting both hubs. I've also made sure that AirPort is at the top of the network connection list.
Both laptops are running 10.4.3 and have all the latest software updates installed.
What am I missing?
Thanks. Both of these replies are helpful, in that they help confirm something I figured out this morning, almost accidentally.
One thing I didn't mention was that during the change from WPA to WEP I changed the network password. Now, I assumed that since the Keychain seemed to be working and I could get on the network manually without needing to enter the password each time, that meant the new password had correctly propagated throughout the system.
So, this morning I go into the Network settings, switch from Automatic to Preferred, select my network, look at the properties, and notice that somehow it has way too many bullets for that to be the correct password. I re-entered the password and that seems to have solved the problem. The new password I had entered somehow didn't make it into this setting. I guess trashing the network prefs, or renaming the network would have had the same effect. -
After entering my pw at the login screen, I get a black screen
This started after battery got fully drained accidentally.
It has happened in the past after battery gets fully drained accidentally, and I have to reboot several times until it boots properly.
This time I tried rebooting several times but it never booted properly
Tried booting into Safe Mode, by restart Mac while holding down theShift key past the chime, until I saw the Apple logo and spinning gear. I did NOT see the spinning gear change into a solid progress bar. I also did NOT see OS X login window with the words “Safe boot” in bright red.
I Tried booting Mac’s recovery system, by restarting Mac and holding down Command + R during boot. I ran Disk Utility and theVerify Disk option did NOT find any errors. Interestingly only 16 mb was found to be available on the 250 GB disk. Note: I have filevault2 encryption enabled

I do have time machine backup.
Do I need to erase the harddisk and restore from time machine, just reinstall OS Mountain lion from internet, get a new hard disk, or do something else.
I don't know if I need to boot this Macbook from an external disk/drive and copy data or fix some minor error
PLEASE HELP !
I would highly appreciate it.Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.
