Problems formatting an external Windows based HD

I have an older 80 GB hard drive that has Windows installed on it. I have it hooked up as an external now and when I try to format it I can't modify Documents & Settings. I have it set up as a slave and I'm trying to wipe it clean so I can use it for additional space.
If anyone knows any way to make it Writable, suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Welcome to the Apple discussions.
The drives I've put into enclosures have not been set up as slaves, rather, they've been master, usually without a jumper on Western Digital drives. Have you tried that configuration, instead of slave?

  • Problem while setting External Window Title

    Hello,
    This should actually be a straighforward task, but I don't understand why I am facing a problem.
    I am opening an external window (browser) and trying to set the title of the window. Here is the code
         IWDWindow win = wdComponentAPI.getWindowManager().createNonModalExternalWindow(url,"Title");
         win.setTitle("Title");
         win.removeWindowFeature(WDWindowFeature.ADDRESS_BAR);
         win.removeWindowFeature(WDWindowFeature.MENU_BAR);
         win.removeWindowFeature(WDWindowFeature.STATUS_BAR);
         win.removeWindowFeature(WDWindowFeature.TOOL_BAR);
         win.setWindowPosition(100, 150);
         win.show();
    The window opens well with the right URL. But the title does not seem to be changing at all. The URL is displayed instead of the title. Where could I be going wrong?
    I have placed this code within an action event
    We are using EP7 SP10.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Reena

    Hi Reema
    IWDWindow win = wdComponentAPI.getWindowManager().createNonModalExternalWindow(url,"Title");
    win.setTitle("Title");
    in the above code createNonModalExternalWindow(url,"Title");  here it self you are setting the title , just comment this statement [win.setTitle("Title");]
    and see the <b>source</b> of the external window whether you can see the title as you mentioned or not

  • Problem formatting an external HD: Won't unmount

    So I just got a new External HD and am trying to format for backups. Everything time I try to erase it with disk utility, it says "Disk erase failed with the error: Could not unmount disk."
    What gives? Could there be a problem with my FW cable or port? I was experiencing problems with the old HD I had in this port, hence the new one.

    I tried to unmount the volume on the the HD and turned out something was running in the background. Once I killed that the erase worked. THanks

  • Using a Mac formatted ipod with windows itunes

    Any ideas how I can update my mac formatted ipod on windows based itunes without losing all of my music? Every time I connect onto my pc I just kept being told I need to restore factory settings, yet when I connect to my mac it's fine.
    Any help is greatly appreciated

    If your iPod is formatted for Mac it won't run natively on a PC because the Windows OS does not support the HFS Plus file system and therefore will not see the drive: How to determine your iPod's disk format
    Macs can read Windows drives so you could restore and format the iPod on a PC then connect it back to the Mac and reload your songs. iTunes will allow you to use an iPod formatted for Windows on a Mac but Apple currently only fully supports using the iPod shuffle in FAT32 format on Mac, in other words all future software updates for the iPod would have to be carried out in Windows to maintain the formatting. Alternatively there are third party programs that will allow you to use a Mac formatted iPod on Windows, this is one for instance gets good reviews. It's a commercial program so you'll have to purchase a license to use it:: XPlay 2

    hello once again.. i have formatted my external Hard drive it using exFAT, now my windows cant detect my device, can u plzz help me the whole purpose is getting ruined, i use Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit

    This is a problem with the Mac OS X implementation of exFAT. I've had the same problem.
    Best is to use a Windows box to format the drive exFAT. Then it can be read by both Windows and Mac OS.
    But aren't Macs supposed to "Just Work"? Not in this case.

  • Which format for external hard drive to use with time machine backup and connect to windows laptop?

    Hi!  I have an external hard drive on which I have transferred my iTunes library (just mine - not others).  I have also a folder containing just films (some but not all of which are in iTunes too)  Everything has been working just fine until yesterday I noticed that Time Machine was not including the external hard drive in back up as it wasn't formatted.  So I have moved everything back to the Mac hard drive and and ready to format the external hard drive - but understand that if I do the contents cannot be opened from a windows laptop ...  is that right?  Is there are format I could choose that would allow Time Machine to back up and allow Windows to open as well (the idea being that I take the external hard drive with me on holidays etc!!)  Many thanks for any advice.

    ok - I understand.  I have managed so far to format the drive (on windows) to exFAT file system - which apparently works with both Windows and Mac - but you're  correct - it will not be included in time machine backup as I have checked the back up files and Samsung is not showing.  Reckon I'm onto having to buy yet another portable hard drive just for windows - or of course buy myself a new mac book!!  Can I ask you please - does the drive have to be clear of everything before I change the format - or can I change it with the files still in there?  Also, got any quick ways duplicating the files onto another External Hard drive (for use on the windows laptop)  At the moment the files are taking 2/3 hours + to copy over!  Thank you!

    In Mac OS X v10.7, the $HOME/Library folder is a hidden folder.
    Open Finder and use one of these:
    * Go > Go To Folder (Shift-Command-G) and in the dialog type: ~/Library
    * Open the "Go" menu and hold down the Option key to make the Library appear
    You can also use this command in a Terminal window to remove the hidden flag.
    * Mac HD > Applications > Utilities > Terminal
    * chflags nohidden ~/Library

  • Problems formatting external drive with Disk Utility

    Hi all
    I'm having some odd troubles with using Disk Utility to format an external hard drive. For some reason, it is giving me all sorts of errors and problems.
    Currently, it will let me format the drive in MS-FAT, but won't let me copy certain files to it (it gives an error code). I'm currently trying to re-format the drive in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) but the status bar give me the following error and continues to do its 'pondering' instead of giving me a progress bar:
    !http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/5019/picture2csm.png!
    It is currently sitting like that, not doing anything (not even going unresponsive).
    What am I doing wrong here?
    Cheers.

    Wait, scratch that, it suddenly started working again.
    For some reason, I had to partition it, with one partition a Mac OS partition and the other an MS-DOS FAT... hey ho, no idea.

  • RDC for MAC cannot connect to TS server with error message "You were disconnected from the Windows-based computer because of problems during the licensing protocol".

    the mac clients are running RDC for mac version 2.1 and they cannot connect to Windows 2008 R2 TS server. They get the error "You were disconnected from the Windows-based computer because of problems during the licensing protocol".
    really appreciated if someone have a fix for this.

    Hey,
    Any proposed answer for this ?
    I face the same problem and my environment
    and I've got same results as dle2k
    1. TS lic mode is set to per user confirmed it works for windows clients.
    2. the TS server's system log logged error "The Terminal Server security layer detected an error in the protocol stream and has disconnected the client".
    3. the reports shows per user cal has been issued to users. no temp per device cal has been issued.
    4. yes, CoRD works .
    5. we tried version 2.1.1 of the Mac RD Client but it also does not work.

  • Formatting External Windows Hard Drive

    Whenever I connect an external hard drive that I normally use with my Windows PC, my MacBook makes the external hard drive "read-only." How can I change this to read and write?
    Also, eventhough its in "read only," can I format the external drive?
    THANKS!

    Your external hard drive that Windows formatted most likely formatted the drive in the NTFS partition type. OS X can only read NTFS, not write to it.
    OS X allows you to use the Disk Utility application to format hard drives, including external hard drives, but you cannot format it in NTFS.
    OS X can format in FAT32, another format that Windows uses. If you want to ultimately have the external hard drive readable by both Windows and OS X, FAT32 will work.

    1) In 'ExFAT' format, is there a limitation on the file size?
    Not one that will matter.
    2) Is 'MAC OS Extended' format, only for MAC computers?
    Yes, only for Mac
    3) What are those (a) journaled (b) Encrypted & (c) Case-sensitive? or when to use those?
    Again, only for Mac.

  • MB Pro & External Hard Drive - Best format for Mac/Windows use?

    My external hard drive is currently formatted as FAT 32. I need to use it between Mac and Windows. However, I have many files that are 4 GB or larger.
    Should I reformat as HFS? Will that at least be readable on Windows?
    I thank you in advance for any thoughts.

    There's no really good choice.
    Regardless of the filesystem you choose, you will need additional software to read/write it on one of the operating systems. MacDrive for Windows will permit you to read/write HFS+ formatted volumes on Windows -- it's $50. MacFuse + NTFSng allows Mac OS X to read/write NTFS formatted drives -- it's free, but a little awkward.
