Problems going to sleep

Ever since the 10.4.6 upgrade my Mac is having sleep problems. It refuses to sleep when told to by system preferences like it used to. I can put it into sleep mode manually and it wakes up fine. I tried resetting something or another, as recommended by Apple, by holding down the power button as I plugged in the power lead but to no avail.
I have no other users on the system and can only only really put it down to 10.4.6 update. My machine is a G5 1gig Ram 2.0ghz 17 inch.
Any ideas.

A number of sleep-related issues can appear after incremental Mac OSX updates, including the inability to properly go to sleep, problems waking from sleep, and having your display go to sleep without your Mac going to sleep. The most common culprit is Bluetooth. Try these tips to fix your sleep problems.
WAKE UP
In System Preferences>Bluetooth, uncheck Allow Bluetooth Devices To Wake This Computer. If you are using a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, you'll have to wake your Mac by pressing the power button.
FILE CORRUPTION
Your Bluetooth preference file may be corrupt-you'll need to delete it. Turn Bluetooth off, then go to the /Users/user name/Library/Preferences folder. Look for a file called com.apple.Bluetooth.plist and trash it.The OS will create a new preference file when you enable Bluetooth again.
ENERGY SAVER
If you have issues with a Mac or display that goes to sleep at inappropriate times, you may have a problem with Energy Saver. Delete the following .plist files and restart:
-/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
-/Users/username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist--(username is your name or System Administrators name).
-/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist
A restart is very important after deleting these plists. After a reboot your Mac will then generate new ones.
Some, in these forums, have had luck fixing sleep issues downloading the Combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try.
Yours would be the 10.4.6 Combo update. Others reading, download the combo update that applies to you!
Cheers!

  • Problems going to sleep after 10.5 upgrade and new memory

Looking around the forums I notice lots of problems with sleeping computers and Leopard. Here's my story.
After upgrading my eMac with new memory (now at 1 GB) and Leopard, I have problems getting it to go to sleep after logging out. What happens is at the logout/login screen I click the sleep button, it goes gray for seven or eight seconds or so, then goes active again and the computer stays awake. I have to click-and-wait three times before the computer will sleep. It is a consistent bug in that I always have to click three times.
I figure this is more likely a Leopard problem than a memory problem. I bought the RAM off eBay but they are name-brand chips and haven't given me any problem.
    Any thoughts?

    Andy,
I would pull out to the new RAM upgrade and see if your sleep issue is hardware related. If your Mac still doesn't sleep correctly, I would try reloading OS X from your retail discs, then upgrade to 10.5.2 making sure you use the Combo Updater instead of Software Update.

  • Problems going to sleep, waking up, restarting, etc

I just bought a refurbished Macbook...and we are already developing an intense love/hate relationship because of it's eratic sleep behaviors. So this morning I tested it by trying various methods of sleeping/waking/restarting.
Here are my morning Macbook activities:
1: Macbook is sleeping, I open it...it appears to be functioning...then 5 minutes later, I get the "you need to restart your computer" box (the one with all the different languages)
2: Restart--Freezes on blue screen with rotating wheel
3: Turn off/on using power button
3: Put to sleep using Option/Command/Eject; wake using power IT WORKS!!!
4: Put to sleep by closing lid; open to wake and it seems to work! I try to shut down using the Apple menu...and I get the spinning beachball...
5: Turn off/on using power button
    6: Reset PRAM
7: Put to sleep using Option/Command/Eject; wake using power
    IT WORKS!!!
8: Put to sleep by closing lid; open to wake...seems to work but the spinning wheel appears on the desktop and I have no mouse...so I have to restart it AGAIN
    9: Put to sleep using Option/Command/Eject; open to wake;
    IT WORKS!!!
10: Put to sleep using Option/Command/Eject; wake using power...seems to work but when I open my airport menu, it freezes and the menu becomes unaccessible and will not disappear...restart AGAIN
11: Put to sleep by closing lid; open to wake...so far, so good...
This basically covers every issue my Macbook has had in the last week, except for the three or four times it just won't start and sits on a black screen, going through some script indefinitely...yeah...that one didn't repeat today.
    Yes, my software is up-to-date...
    Yes, I reset my PRAM...
    Yes, I reset the SMC...
Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

    Hi -
I'd try booting to your Install DVD while holding 'D' ...this will launch the Apple Hardware Test.
If things are fine here, then start to that DVD again but this time hold down 'C'. When you finally have a 'top menu' bar across the screen, use it and launch Disc Utility and then verify and repair both permissions and the disc itself.
On restart, reset your SMC once again...

    I'm using a late 2006 2.33GHz imac.
I clean installed 10.6 from disc then updated to 10.7 from download.
Now every time my computer goes into sleep it won't wake up.
The only way it will restart is to pull the mains lead out of the imac, put it back and try until it will start.
This only happened after reinstalling.  Only Apple OS was on the imac and so it must be an issue with the software I believe.....
Anyone know how to cure this problem please?
    Thanks
    paul

This isn't a fix, more a workaround I used when I had wake from sleep problems that lasted from some point in 10.6.x, through 10.7 and into 10.8 (got fixed for me in 10.8.2). It seems to be connected with Bluetooth failing to wake up properly:
System Preferences>Energy Saver and set 'computer sleep' to 'never'.

  • PB 12" OSX keeps going to sleep - power problem?

My 12" 867MHz Powerbook has developed a fault that results in the screen going very dim and the PB going to sleep, even before it's displayed anything on screen.
Everything sounds good - I get a startup chime and the usual disk noises and sometimes I can very faintly see the desktop. I can wake it very briefly by pressiing the power button, but it nods straight off again.
Stranger still, it tends to work perfectly for a short while if it's been left off for a long time (like days or weeks). When the problem first developed I was able to remedy it by removing the (perfectly good) battery and running it straight off the adapter, but that doesn't work either now, and a new battery didn't help.
Anyone come across this before? I have a nasty feeling it'll be expensive!
I'm not actually sure which OS it's running as I can't see, but it is X.

There may be a number of things to try to establish the fault.
    1. Go to the utilities, console and open this up press the logs button and take a look at the system logs, it should give you some idea of whats happening i.e power management recieved an emergency overtemp signal going to sleep...
    or something like that.
    2. run the Apple hardware diagnostics to see if it finds any faults with any of the hardware. This should be on a cd that came with the machine.
    3. if its a thermal problem then do a search on google for temperature monitor OS X. Set the preferences to update every second. Get it running and take a look at the history if one of the sensors is acting wildly then it can be a bad sensor. (trackpad sensors seem to be a favorite to go wild)
    4. Also do a seach for smartutility and have a look at what this says. If it says your hard drive is failing then get it replaced.
I had similar issues with a 1.67mhz powerbook, every diagnostic and test I ran found nothing yet it would sleep sometimes every few minutes. Even after reinstalling the sytem, resetting the pmu etc. All the disk utilities I ran told me the hard drive was fine, except smart utility. I cloned my sytem onto a replacement drive replaced the drive and its been fine ever since.
If it's a temp sensor then if you search around there are ways to disable them by removing bits of software. Or you can take it apart and physically remove them, but I woulnd't recommend it. Other wise you may need to take it to a store to be fixed.
    Good luck

Hello Albert, see how many of these you can answer...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts?

  • I have a year old iMac and Macbook, both on 10.7.3.  Every time the iMac goes to sleep I lose wi-fi.  No problem with the Macbook and iPad.  A lot of people seem to have the same problem.  What's the solution?

I have a year-old iMac and Macbook, both on 10.7.3.  Every time the iMac goes to sleep I lose wi-fi from  Airport Express.  No problem with the Macbook or my iPad.  It seems a lot Mac users are having the same problem.  Is there a solution?  Does Apple have a solution?

    Sometimes there are problems.
Somethings to try but probably won't help....
    1. Repair Disk Permissions
    2. Startup in Safe mode by holding down the "Shift" key....
    3. Reset the P Ram by holding down the "Command/Option/P/R" keys at the same time...
The above are standard items to do on any Mac from time to time.
I repair permissions at least once a month....
The other 2 periodically as they do straighten things out when they get out of whack....
    Thanks for the feedback.

  • I just added two external firewire drives and they keep going to sleep.  I did not have this problem when USB.  I have turned off "put disks to sleep" in power preference.

I just added two external firewire drives and they keep going to sleep.  I did not have this problem when using USB external drives.  I have turned off "put disks to sleep" in power preference.

It is not clear if these are the same drives, just connected
    differently, or different drives?
One thing that may be happening is that the drives firmware
itself is putting it to sleep when inactive.  Many drives on
the market have ths feature and it is turned on by default
and require a drive utility from the manufacturer to disable it.

so I have called HP tech support 12 times over the last 6 weeks and still my HP Officejet 4620 loses connection overnight. Of course becasue it was a birthday present I spent more time than I normally would have on this issue. While the tech are very polite they have not fixed my problem and now it is too late to return printer to store. This is a lot of money wasted and I think they need to admit this is a bug in this printer and resolve the problem!!!!!

  • Problems with the computer going to sleep on startup

The past 2 nights I've been working in Final Cut Pro and after an hour or so of the computer being one, it goes to sleep despite being in use. The first time it happened last night I found it odd but didn't think anything of it. Well, 5 minutes later it went back to sleep. I woke it up and kept working. It went back to sleep a few minutes later. This kept going on for about a half hour before I figured something was wrong and I should shut down. It was a hot night last night so I thought that may have had something to do with it.
Tonight, I started up the computer and went back to work. After about an hour the same thing started happening only tonight it was more frequent. It would go to sleep about every minute. I restarted the computer and this is when it gets bad. It will go through the startup process and just when it is about to go to the desktop, it goes to sleep only I can't wake it up. I can't do anything. My main monitor appears to shut off completely and my secondary monitor goes to sleep. Not even holding down the power button to shut it down works. I have to turn off the power strip it is plugged into to get it to turn off. This happens every time I try to boot up I don't have a Leopard disk handy to try and boot from that since that is at my studio.
I can't seem to find this on the forum. I'm stumped.
    here is what I'm using
    G4 dual 1.42 ghz
    2 GB ram
    20" cinema display main monitor
    17" apple display other monitor
I think I'm using the latest version of Leopard but I'm not sure when the last time I ran software update was. Same for Final Cut Studio.

    Start up in safe boot:
    Safe Boot

This forces a disk check called fsck -fy it is similar to repair disk on the disk utility. Once it has started up to your log in screen restart normally and see if that helps

  • TS1398 Has anyone had a problem with wifi going to sleep on a mini?

It seems like the wifi goes to sleep. I have to go to settings and then it seems to work.

It does go to sleep unless you are connected to power. When you wake up the mini it reconnects.

  • Mavericks 10.9-10.9.1 bug/issue/problem: external drives connected through thunderbolt or firewire are not put to sleep when iMac goes to sleep

Previous to Mavericks (10.9 - 10.9.1) I've had no issues with external firewire or thunderbolt connected drives to be put to sleep. However, since Mavericks all of my external drives are not put to sleep when my iMac, or Mac Pro go to sleep.
How can a company such as Apple, pushing people to have external devices like hard drives, is not on top of fixing this issue? Apple pushed for firewire and thunderbolt, thus All external drives I've owned are firewire. Because of speed. I bought thunderbolt adapters for firewire, and before Mavericks all worked great. Now that we have 10.9.1 update, this is still an issue!
I'm aware of the temporary solution of connecting the drive through USB to make it work, this is not a solution, but a hack.
Please let Apple know that this is a known issue, and there should be a fix for it. Everyone's data depends on it! Not only current external backups, but also external sensitive hard drives we rely on. Currently, the following makes are experiencing this issue: Lacie, OWC (Elite Pro), WD, Promise, Seagate, Toshiba, G-Drive.

If anyone finds how to solve this issue, please help by posting the steps or solution.

    Same 2 issues with 10.9.3:
External FireWire drive WILL NOT spin down when Mac goes to sleep.
    also
External FireWire drive WILL NOT spin down for inactivity despite “Put hard disks to sleep when possible” is checked in energy saver.
This has been going on since the launch of Mavericks and no solution found yet.
    USB ports work normally.
