Problems Importing Canon XF Files

I am running Premiere Pro CC (v 7.2.1) under Windows 7. I import footage created on a Canon XF300 and XF100, among other cameras. Prior to v7.2.1, I would import XF by clip name, each clip containing one or more 2 GB files. The files would load separately, with a length of about 5 minutes. When placed in a sequence, the files would be loaded sequentially, but remain separate. They would play across the boundaries without jumping or losing sync. While not convenient when editing, I completed many projects in this manner. The time code of each file was displayed as recorded, head-to-tail with the previous file.
With 7.2.1, the same video is automatically merged when imported into the project. Each file assumes the same content as the entire clip. However the time code has the same starting value as the last file in the clip, whether I import directly from Windows Explorer (ctl-I) or use the media browser. This appears to be what version 7 intended to do, and I can work with it.
Whatever the merits of this "improvement," it is not documented well. It took me a day and a half searching the web and experimenting before I could proceed. Thank heavens for the holidays and extended deadlines.
My problem is, projects completed under previous versions and updates did not automatically merge the clips, but when I open them in the latest PPro, it attempts to "correct" this deficiency and merge the files. Consequently, I cannot revisit earlier files without starting from scratch. I have CS6, but only files created in that or earlier versions can be opened.
How do I best proceed to open recent projects without messing them up? When will the product manual (PDF) be updated from the October 2013 version? What ever happened to the concept, "backward compatibility"?

Here is what I found out...
If you use Media Browser to import files directly from the Canon XF card, and select the Canon XF option in the menue, only a single file appears in the list, with the name of the first segment in the clip directory. If you import that file, it has the contents of the sum of all segments, but with the starting time code of the last segment.
If you copy the clip directories from the card to your hard drive, Media Browser sees all of the individual segments and does not offer the Canon XF import option, only the File Directory option. If you import the clip, all of the segments appear in the project window, but each segment is identical to the first, and contains the sum of all clips and the starting time code of the last segment.
If you remove the CIF files from the clip directory on the hard drive, PPro 7.2.1 imports each segment without merging their contents. Each segment contains about 5 minutes of footage (50 MHz video), and the starting time code of each segment is consecutive. This is same the way PPro 7.1 and previous versions would import Canon XF files from the hard drive, even if the CIF files were present. If you open an earlier project with 7.2.1, these files will be automatically merged, destroying the integrity of your sequences and edits.
In conclusion, if you want to use the full power of 7.2.1 to merge the segments within a clip, from a copy of the clip on your hard drive, import only the first segment of each clip.
If you wish to use 7.2.1 on projects created with 7.1 or earlier, remove the CIF files from the clip first, and the project will be opened with the same individual segments as before. (This does not change the behavior under v6 or V7.1, since these versions ignored CIF files on the hard drive.) You must be careful to use shift-select-all to move all following segments together. Alternately, you can nest the segmented sequence inside another sequence, which will allow you to edit the sequence as a single file.
PPro 6 and 7 apparently imported Canon XF files correctly ONLY from the original card, which has certain directory names and structure, and ONLY if you used Media Browser with the Canon XF import option. If you do this, PPro writes additional information (XMP and PEK) files on the card, which may render it unreadible on the camera. In any case, it's best to preserve the original intact and work from a hard drive copy.

  • Having problems importing my .mov file.

I am having problems importing several .mov files into iMovie. I also can't import .wmv files and I have been utterly confused. I know I have to convert the files but I don't want to pay for a program because I will only be converting 4 files. Please help!

    What is Mpeg Streamclip
It is a free conversion application that accesses the QT structure and all installed QT components without having to pay the $30 for QT Pro or purchasing GarageBand. It's "engine" is MPEG-based, so it can do some things that QT Pro cannot do ( e.g., retaining audio content when converting multiplexed compression formats). On the other hand, it cannot perform layer operations like QT Pro can so these applications are somewhat complementary.
and is there anyway you can send me a link to download this program please?

  • CS6 fails to import Canon .mxf files. In CS5.5 it works always great.

On CS6.01 I can not import Canon mxf video footage. There is always import failure message window. Same result if I copied CF Card to Hard disc.
On CS5.5 it works always great. I have both premiere versions on same computer:
    Camera: Canon XF100

    Framerate: 25,00
    OS: Windows 7 Ultimate

On CS5.5 it works always fine, no problem! Same result on my notebook, I installed both versions CS5.5 and CS6.01, on CS6.01 it never works.
    Any idea?

CS5.x is obsolete software and is no longer supported by Adobe ever since CS6 was released.  The last version of the Camera Raw plug-in to run with CS5.x was ACR 6.7.1. There will be no further updates for CS5.x.
You need to look for, download, install, launch and run the free, stand-alone Adobe DNG Converter 8.8 on each batch of raw files that cannot be opened in ACR 6.7.1.

  • New problems importing Pro-res files

    Hi,
I am running CC14 on PC (HPz800 Windows 8) - and I have recently become unable to import Pro-res files into After Effects or Media Encoder. These files DO open in premiere
    I have tried the following:
    Restarted
    Cleared my cache
    Cleared all my appdata settings
    uninstalled and reinstalled latest Quicktime
reverted back to a previous version of After effects (this is where i noticed the problem first and I had recently got a new update)
copying the file to a different location on my drive and importing it from there
    Additionally:
I have had no problems with Pro-res in the past
The same file works fine on other computers in my office with the same versions of Ae/Encoder
The video file works in premiere
The video file plays fine in Quicktime
    I get the following errors:
In Ae - "this '.mov' is damaged or unsupported"
In media encoder - "could not be imported. could not read from source. please check settings and try again"
In the meantime I have re-encoded a proxy using premiere - however this is not an adequate long-term solution
Not sure what to try next, don't really want to re-image my whole computer (i already did this on a month or so ago)

  • Problem importing a CSV file with forward slashes in a column

I have an Excel csv file of a product database (contains about 6500 products) that contains product codes with forward slahes such as 499/1, 499/3, 499/5.
These are different sizes of a product and as such have different prices etc.
When I import the file into Numbers these numbers appear as 499, 166 1/3, and 99 4/5 respectively.
What seems to be happening is that Numbers is interpreting the forward slash (/) as a divide by command and subsequently performing a calculation on that number on import and hence totally changing the value of the cell so that it is impossible to look up the price related to a product as the product code no longer exists.
Excel can import these files with no problems, why can't Numbers treat each cell as text and leave it alone on import.
Is there any way round this or do I have to revert to using Excel for the import of csv files.
    Thanks
    Steve

I know I'm a bit(!) late (a year) coming to this party, but there is a simple solution, that worked for me, enclose the field in double quotes, and add a single quote before the number:
    Instead of
    499/1,"Super Widget 3",12.34
    do
    "'499/1","Super Widget 3",12.34
In fact the single (unclosed) quote without double-quotes works as well:
    '499/1,"Super Widget 3",12.34
I've always found it better to enclose strings with double quotes. This works on loading the file into Mac Numbers and should work with Excel too if that helps. It opens with OpenOffice 4 on the Mac too - if you select "comma" in the "Separated by" checkbox
I can't remember where I picked this info up....
Hope this helps someone, albeit late.

  • New to Lightroom, problem importing raw CR2 files.

I am new to Lightroom and am having trouble importing my CR2 raw photo files. In the "import" section I select my SD card that contains the raw image files. All .jpeg files on the card show up as thumbnails but the CR2 files show "preview not available for this file." I select one of the CR2 thumbnails anyway, select a destination folder on my external hard drive and click "import." A window pops up that says, "this file is not recognized by the raw support format in Lightroom." I'm using Lightroom 4.4 and am working with a Windows Vista operating system (on an old, junky laptop). My camera is a Canon 70D and am shooting in RAW+JPEG. I also downloaded the Adobe .DNG converter 6.3 to try to convert the files before importing them into Lightroom and it is also not recognizing and importing my CR2 files. Not sure what to do at this point. Any suggestions?

I would recommend downloading DNG Converter 8.2 which is compatible with Vista.
The latest version 8.6 requires W7 or W8

  • Problem importing NEF raw files in PSE 11

In the past week I have become unable to import Nikon raw files (NEF format) into PSE 11 editor.  I seem to have the latest version of  PSE 11 and the latest camera raw plug-in (7.4).  All was working fine.  I now get an error message "unable to use the camera raw plu-in.  It is not compatible with this version of Photoshop Elements".
    Can anyone please help?
    Many thanks.

Did you update via the Help> Updates menu option or by some other means?
Search your computer to make sure you only have the one copy of 'Camera RAW.8bi'. On my windows 7 64-bit it  is at C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\Elements 11\File Formats\Camera Raw.8bi and is 24,719,736 bytes.
Are these NEF files from a newer Nikon camera? If so which one? Each camera has it's own NEF format (although the error message you get does not suggest this would be the problem)?

  • Problems importing ProRes 4444 files

The original footage for my project is 16mm film, which I had scanned. I've been provided with two types of files: one set in ProRes 422 (proxy) with a timecode burn-in, and one set in ProRes 4444 with no burn-in. I've been able to import the 422 files without any problems, but obviously I greatly prefer the 4444 files. But when I've tried importing them, or even just previewing them in Media Browser, it's impossible to achieve fullspeed playback. I can't quite tell what's going on; the frame rate is definitely off for starters, it's too slow, but at any rate it doesn't play smoothly. Any idea how to start solving this problem? I've done a system resources test and I have plenty of horsepower, so I don't think this stuttering is due to that. I also have the newest version of QuickTime installed. I'm on a PC if that matters. Thanks for your help.

They are using a card reader, and the USB slot in an iMac.  It turns out that they have downloaded the cards first to their PC at home, then brought the same card to class to import to their LR catalog on their external HD.  Could here be something happening to the files to make them unreadable when the cards are downloaded to the home PC?

  • Image problems importing Illustrator 10 file into Flash MX.

    Hello,
I'm working on my portfolio and want to import an Illustrator
(version 10) file into Flash (Flash MX). The problem I'm having is
that when I import the Illustrator file into Flash, it comes out
looking blurred. I tried exporting the Illustrator file into
Photoshop and saving it as a JPEG, PNG, and TIFF (in each file
format, changing the image size to 72 dpi) and I still get the same
blurred result. I also tried saving the file for web, in
Illustrator (in JPEG and PNG formats) with no success as well.
The Illustrator file is a small collage of my graphic design
work (where I pasted graphic work done in Illustraor and made
clipping masks to collage them together), so I'm not sure if
bringing these files together maybe causing some technical issue or
is importing Illustrator files into Flash just something that will
always appear blurred. If so, is there a way I can bring the file
into Photoshop and work with it where I can import it without the
    blurred appearance?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

We have multiple request to add support for externally linked files and certainly see the value. There also are a couple third party solutions that offer linked file behavior (I'm not sure what versions of Ps they work with). You can see and add to the request (and find the third party solutions) here:

  • Problems importing Illustrator CS2 files into InDesign CS2

Using a MacIntosh and Creative Suite Premium CS2 system 10.3.9
I have created a restaurant menu in Illustrator and want to import it into Indesign with the ability to make changes to text and other formating. As it is, it is importing a pdf file which I can do nothing with, If I copy and paste the Illustrator file, I get non-formatted text and no graphics.
What is the solution or is this possible to do? I thought these two were supposed to work together. Hmmmm

Diane How is a waste of time to learn?
Had you originally set up you menu in ID you could edit it in ID, by placing individual pages made in Illustrator you now have to edit them in Illustrator. as soon as the file is saved it will be updated in ID.
instead of thinking that this forum is a waste of time you would be better served learning how to use the tools you have to their best advantage instead of criticizing a very knowledgeable person who did a nice job of explaining the relationship of the tools you use.

  • Problem import large avi-files into iMovie '11

I have a large AVI-file, DV, from an old video camera that I want to import to iMove '11. The file is 10,37 GB but when I import it to iMovie only a few scenes is visible. Also, iMovie says the file is 4,71 GB.
How do I import the whole file?
    Thanks
    /Torbjörn

If you can convert the AVI movie back on the PC to Quicktime, this would be your best option.  AVI files are limited to 4GB in size.  To get around this limit, the AVI file might be referencing other smaller files on the PC.  The AVI file format has been pretty much abandoned by Microsoft which now uses the WMV format.

  • Problems importing After Effects files into FCP

    Hey guys--
So I have this odd problem importing my after effects clips into FCP. I am working in standard DV, and my After Effects composition settings match my FCP settings.
I am snipping little bits from my FCP project, exporting them to QT, adding stuff on top in AE, then shooting the clip back to FCP. The problem is, whent he clip goes back to FCP it is slightly "pinched." It's not really thaat visible, unless I try to edit a cut in the same shot. The after effects clip is a couple pixels wider, and the quality is a little blurry. If it is a hard edit, you wouldn't even notice the difference, but the two shots together make it pretty noticeable. I'm not set to square pixels or anything, and i get the same results no matter which codec i render in AE with.
    Any ideas?

  • Problems importing comverted wmv3 files

I'm trying to import some wmv3 files into iMovie. I have QT Pro and Flip4Mac. When I export to DV or AVI there is no sound. I also have MPEG Slipstream and when I try to export to any of those formats, I get an error message.
How can I get audio so that it is part of the file? Once I get the file into iMovie I'll do a lot of trimming, cropping and chopping. I know I won't be able to keep a separate audio track synced with the video.
thanks for any help. I'm pretty frustrated at this point.

Thanks for the explanation of SC. I didn't get the connection even though we were talking about it Streamclip.
    as often said here:
iMovie is a video edit app meant to work with
    firewire connected miniDV camcorders
I love iMovie and think that it should do more than it does. I forget that it's original intent is to edit home movies.
ask maker of wmv files, to
    give you a tape....
That won't happen. I'm downloading German TV shows that I can play in QT or with Windows Media Player. However, I'm trying to edit out the stuff my students won't understand. I know that I can fast forward through parts, but I like adding titles and subtitles. I also know my students and as soon as I fast forward anything in a video, they take a mental break and either talk or start goofing around. It takes longer to get them focused again and we waste time. I'd prefer to have what I need in one short video.
Thanks for your help, Karsten. Ich bin sehr dankbar! I do appreciate it!

  • Problem importing canon c300 mxf files into Premiere Pro CC 2014

I recently shot some footage with a c300 at 24fps, slog2, 2 audio chanels. I copied the "contents" folder of each cf card to my macbook pro hard drive by dragging across in finder.

I can double click the files in finder and they open in VLC fine.
I'm running the latest version of Prem Pro, Yosemite on my macbook pro which has 2.8ghz i-7 processor, NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB graphic card.
Does anyone know why this is happening?

You could try to convert your XAVC MXF files into MPEG, then load them again , but the new codec may not be well handled by some converters.
