Problems importing from Compact Flash cards shot on Canon 5D Mark ll

On my first attempt at importing footage from the Canon 5D Mark ll, but I've not been able to do so. I'm using FCP 7 and I downloaded the Canon Log & Transfer plug-in. I followed the instructions on Canon's website exactly, but when I get to the stage where I need to pick a preference and try to pick 'Canon EOS,' when I click 'OK,' nothing happens. The clips just don't show up.
I know the clips are there as I can view them on the 5D and I was able to import them automatically into Aperture. However, I don't know how to do the necessary transcoding once they're imported into Aperture instead of FCP.
Anything obvious that I may be doing wrong?

Are you importing them directly from the camera card or from Aperture?
If from Aperture I had a similar problem with the 5D movies after I had imported them into Aperture and deleted everything off my card (I presume this is what you may have done)
The problem is that you need the associated .THM files that are created when you shoot a video on the 5d. These are the same name as the movie file but with the THM extension rather than .MOV.
What I did was:
Create a folder structure on your hard drive that mirrors the structure on your camera:- ie
DCIM
EOS5D
Export all your .mov files from A3 into the EOS5D folder.
You then need to recreate a THM file for each of the .mov files and they have to have exactly the same name apart from the extension.
You can simply copy a THM file from your camera card and then just rename it. Repeat the process for each .mob file
Once you have done that you should be able to find the files, point to the DCIM folder however.
I had to do 270 of them and created a work flow in Automator to make it a bit faster.
However as the the metadata for the clip is contained in the THM file you will lose all that.
Trick is in the future to ensure that you don't rely on A3 for importing your movie files if you want to get them into FCP (or other software I presume). Do an exact copy of the card file structure and files onto your HD iof you want to import later.

  • Can't download photos from Compact Flash card

I have a H530S. It has a 7in1 card reader but I have a SanDisk Ultra Compact Flash4GB card which doesn't fit in the card reader. I also have a USB Card Reader / Writer which I've plugged in but nothing happens. It is a iVAVA CRV900.
Please can someone tell me how I can download my photos from this type of card? It used to fit in my old Dell computer, so this is rather annoying that it now not so easy. I had presumed that the super-duper 7 in 1 card reader would at least have a slot that my Compact Flash card would fit in to as it is a common type card used in Canon SLR cameras.

Is anyone going to help me with this please? I've rung tech support and left a message for them to call me and no-one has called and I've emailed them as well and had no reply.

  • Recovering lost deleted data from compact flash card

Hi Any help here would be greatly appreciated...
I filmed some footage onto a compact flash card(sony fx_1 onto a sony memory recording unit/transcend flash card)...all appeared to be working fine untill i got home and the card wouldnt be read..I took it into a shop for data recovery and he managed to return, what we think are the files...
But so far cannot open these files, they are Unix Executable File, does anyone know how to open these files?
Or has anyone had a similar experience or success at recovering media files...they were recorded as HDV format...
Cheers for any suggestions (client is most unamused at the moment)
    Simon

Make sure they have the correct file type extension on the file name. (eg if quicktime, they would be .mov)

  • Import doesn't work from compact flash card

Trying to import photos directly from memory card into LR. Tried 2 ways. First, using a memory card reader, LR did not react to the presence of the card in the reader, even though the reader showed as a drive in My Computer. Secondly, tried connecting directly from my camera (Nikon D200) --- a windows window came up asking how to handle images, but LR was not on the list, and the LR import function (window) did not pop up. Any ideas how to get the LR import pop up to pop? Thanks.

From reading the posts to this thread (and others), I tried a hunch and went to the LR directory on C: drive and found the executable for adobe downloader. I double-clicked on the .exe file, and "installed" this program. This placed the camera icon in the right taskbar, and then tried to download images from the same card into LR. As soon as I did that, LR's import photos dialog box popped up ... so it works now. Not sure why the adobe downloader did not get installed when I installed the LR program.
Another question now. I've got the properties of the downloader set that it will install itself in my right taskbar everytime I boot up. Is there any way to get the downloader initializes whenever I need up ... so that I don't have unnecessary things getting installed at boot? I see I can disable after it gets loaded at boot ... but would prefer to not have it install and then allow me to initialize when I am ready to use it.

  • Batch renaming of m2t files from compact flash card

I just upgraded from FCE to FCP. I wonder if there is a way to rename m2t files captured from a CF card, either in the log&capture window or directly after that, in the browser? Now I have different cards with the same file name beginning (e.g. 00_) and that makes it impossible to sort them logically in a bin, even when I chose recording time and date as a criterium.

Update, I hooked up an external Powered USB port and plugged my card reader into it. When I run it this way, it works fine. It seams that I am having a power problem with my USb port when hooking up the non-powered device to the ports. What would cause my ports not to power my non-powered devices....software....hardware...? Profiler shows USB ports as 500 power.

How do i prevent this from happening? I have looked in system prefereces....maybe i am over looking something, Thanks

iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> General -> Connecting Camera opens.... And select your preferred app.
You can also make the same choice in the Image Capture (in your Applications Folder) and Aperture preferences.

  • Problem with Plugging in Compact Flash Card

I am having a problem now when I plug my compact flash card in to download pictures.  When I plug the card in, the AutoPlay window pops up, as it always does.  However, I also get another window that pops up and says "Lightroom must quit because catalog named Lightroom Catalog.lrcat is not writeable and cannot be opened.   This could be caused by incorrect permissions or because another Lightroom application is using the catalog.  You may select a different catalog the next time you run Lightroom  by holding down the control key while Lightroom launches."
This problem started yesterday.  I had just upgraded to LR 3.5 the day before the problem started.
    Couple of other things:
    1.  Lightroom was not launched at the time I plug in the card and this problem has occurred.   In fact, I just restarted my system a shortwhile ago to test this problem, and it happened again.
    2.  My Lightroom catalog is actually called Lightroom 3 Catalog.lrcat, not Lightroom Catalog.lrcat.
    3.  I have never had my system set up to automatically launch Lightroom when my card is plugged in.
    4.  I have not actually downloaded any pictures from a card for about 2 weeks before I did yesterday, so I cannot say for certain whether or not LR 3.5 is the cause of the problem and perhaps something else is.  But the fact is that I did upgrade to LR 3.5 a few days ago.
    5.  Once I close both the AutoPlay window and the LR dialogue window, I can launch LR 3.5 with no problem and import pictures as I normally do.

Your description of what you've done and the code you show does not match what the tutorial says to do and what code to use... (there is no stopAndGoTo() function in Flash).
Right-click the second frame on the upper layer labeled Actions and select Actions. Copy and paste the code below to make our preloader functional.
    if (_root.getBytesTotal() != _root.getBytesLoaded()){
    gotoAndPlay(1);
    bar_mc._xscale=(_root.getBytesLoaded()/_root.getBytesTotal())*100;
    loader_txt.text=Math.round((_root.getBytesLoaded()/_root.getBytesTotal())*100)+"%";

  • Images can be viewed when inserting compact flash card but many just black when imported. What's up?

When I insert the compact flash card containing 158 images (Raw+jpeg Fine) into the Mac I can view all images, however after I import them only about half of them can be viewed. The remaining images are blacked out even though the info for each image is available. The card was reformatted prior to use. What do you think the problem might be?

Upload off the flash card to a folder on your Desktop (can be done with Image Capture) and see if they can be viewed with Preview. If the can  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import the photos and test to see if the same problem persists.
Also make sure that the RAW files from your camera are supported by the operating system and iPhoto.

  • Lightroom 5 upgrade killed my workflow. What options are left for importing by reference from a flash card?

I just upgraded from Lightroom 1 to Lightroom 5.
I no longer see the option ~"Import from disk"
The application just magically decides what I am importing from.
Unfortunately, this used to be my workaround for keeping my workflow streamlined.
The import from disc option would allow me to import my flash card by reference
into a temporary catalog that would be active only until a full flash card
was archived. This temporarily catalog was used to delete rejects from my
flash card in a Lightroom-leveraged fashion. Once the latest photo update
on the card was clean, I would import by copy into a permanent catalog.
    This meant:
-Always two copies of images once I got back to base
-Ability to leverage develop tools in determining rejects
-No having to make a list of rejects and then deleting them separately
on the camera or through the OS
I see no way to do this with Lightroom 5 and Mac OS X.
I understand the problem might be coming from the OS change that happened
at the same time, but since ~"import from disk" is no longer in the menu, I am
suspecting the change is from the application itself.
I could probably find out the answer to my question through a bunch of experimenting,
but I thought I would float the question in an attempt to save time.
I'm not sure if I can run two versions of Lightroom at the same time on a Mac OS X
machine, but If I can, is this the only way to maintain my workflow?
    Dave

"we have serious concerns about customers accidentally importing referenced files from a card that is subsequently reformatted in the camera"
I understand. So bury the option under the, "Only use if you really know what you are doing. You could destroy everything." heading, Or even as an external file of settings for people who know what they are doing. The point is this has forced me to take a step backward in my workflow which was already a workaround from what I really wanted. Ideally I have wanted all along:
-Import from flash card to main catalog by copy *and* a special-use link back to the flash card file for each image in the catalog
-When deleting rejected photos from the catalog, I would have a third option to delete rejected photos from the flash card.
This way, I avoid not only the new problems created by the Lightroom 5 upgrade, but I would be reducing my imports from two to one. With a slow USB connection, there were advantages in only importing by reference on the first import, but since things tend to run faster these days, I think I would come out ahead overall now.

  • IMac error message with 32Gb compact flash card from Nikon D4

    Hi
I have a iMac 2.8Gig core 2 duo running 10.7.4 - I get a error message (the disk inserted is not readable by this computer) when using 32gb compact flash cards from my Nikon D4, have tried bith Sandisk and Lexar cards same error message. However both cards work fine on my MacBook Pro and a Windows machine. If I format the 32Gig card in my Nikon D300 it is recognised on the iMac. So it appears to be the way the Nikon D4 formats the card that the iMac dosen't like, however as I said it's fine in the MacBook Pro.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

On both Fomats, use Disk Utility on both the Volume & Partition & the blue Info icon to see what the differences are.

  • Copying file from a Compact Flash Card or Epson Picture Viewer issues

I am a photographer and have been experiencing issues when trying to copy or move files from my compact flash cards or my viewer HD device. Both my Sandisk reader and the epson connect to my iMac through USB (rear ports) and during the copy process, I get messages that one of the files are in use, and the rest of the copy is aborted. Since the copy process doesn't work in a numerical or filename fashion, I have to look through each file that has been copied and try to identify which files were missed. The weird thing is that if I try to copy the file that was mentioned in use, it works fine
I am copying to a USB External drive, connected to my Airport Extreme. I've encountered the same things when the HD was connected directly to the iMac.
I am getting very frustrated with this process, and am looking for insight on how to make this go away, or at the very least, is there an application that will copy/move and verify the files before exiting? I can't help but think that I may have missed files here and there, and those files could be now lost memories.
    Any help would be appreciated

They'll record either while simutaniously recording to tape. I believe the HDV is in a .M2t format but I'm not sure about the DV file format. As for quality, your guess is as good as mine, I haven't had the chance to play with one yet.

  • How can I get my new ipad 4 to read my compact flash cards? If not can I download the images directly from my camera?

how can I get my new ipad 4 to read my compact flash cards? If not, can I download the images directly from my camera?

Tom, thanks for your quick reply. I'm a commerical photographer using Canon 5D mk2's mostly and have in the past just downloaded images to a mac book for backup. I really liked the compact size of the Ipad and just got the retina model with the camera connection kit and seem to be hearing that CF readers can't be used with it b/c they draw too much power. Seems like I remember reading I could use a cord that might have come with my cameras to download directly to the Ipad. I haven't tried it yet as I can't find the connection but then you just said it can't be done?
I'm COMPLETLY lost as to your "first pluging in a flash drive to my computer, advice. Do you mean Ipad when you say computer?  "then put your movie/photo files into the folder." HOW????????
Then plug it into the Ipad??????     TOTALLY lost.
Also your saying just "do a google search for a reader doesn't work b/c NONE are able to work with the newer Ipads b/c they use TOO much power or so everyone says everyone that have tried.
Hope you can help a little more b/c I'm really getting frustrated with all the conflicting advice!
    Thanks, Dennis  [email protected]

  • Compact Flash Cards Won't Eject

I'm using Lexar UDMA and non-UDMA compact flash cards. I have the combination Lexar CF/SD pop-up USB card reader. It works on my MacPro. On the new unibody Macbook I bought last fall, there is a consistent problem mounting and ejecting cards of either type. When the cards mount, trying to eject them invariably brings up error messages... The first one says, "Can't eject, some app is using the card", if I do nothing often I get another message that says "Device removed improperly...". Then the card appears to eject, but then won't remount. Just a mess. Was in Africa for three weeks shooting and the only reliable way to download images was USB straight from camera to laptop.
Anyone else experiencing this sort of issue?

I'm not having the same issue, bought thought I may be able to help troubleshoot. Are the Mac Pro and MacBook running the same OS level? (i.e. 10.5.6 like your MacBook is)
Also, are you using the pop-up USB reader on both the Mac Pro and the MacBook?
Last, what are you using to move the photographs once you've got the card inserted, are you just dragging and dropping or importing with Aperture or iPhoto?

I have Photoshop Eleent 12 and use a Windows PC.  I hae been using a Canon EOS 50D for several years, which uses a Compact Flash Card.  I have always downloaded pictures by using a card reader wich I connect to my computer. I Go to the Organizer, click on "Import" and select "From camera or card reader".  Once on the Photo Downloader, I select the pictures, chose the folder and click on "Get Media" and all the photos get downloaded. Today I folled the same procedure as always, but ZI'm gettig an error message that reads"Import Failed" followed by another message that reads "Nothing was imported. The file(s) or folder(s) selected to import did not contain any supported file types, or the files are already in this Catalog."  I'm puzzled by this message and don't know what to do o get my photos.  Any suggestions?

The organizer doesn't care where you send your photos when you download them via the downloader or where they happen to be when you first bring them in if you use the Get Photos command, but once your pics are in the Organizer, you *must* move them from within organizer or it can't find them. You don't have to use My Pictures at all if you don't want to, but regardless of the folder where you put your photos, if you want them someplace else, you use organizer to do it.

  • My Macbook Pro won't read my Compact Flash card

    Here’s the problem.
Mavericks won’t acknowledge the existence of my Compact Flash card when presented in a card reader (I have tried two readers). It is a card I have been using with Lion on my Macbook Pro for some time quite happily.
There is nothing wrong with the card; it works just fine in our Windows machine and in my camera.
My Compact Flash card is a Kingston 4Gb card. It was formatted in the camera.
The camera was bought approx 2003. Its a digital Pentax Optio 33GS (top of the range at the time shooting 3.2 megapixels!).
On my Macbook Pro 15” (bought new approx 2010) the card does not appear in Finder but does appear in Disk Utility.
The information for the main entry on the LHS in Disk Utility is displayed as follows:
Disk Description: 4Gb Generic Storage Device Media
    Write status: Read/write
The sub entry which appears as disk1s1 on the LHS is:
    Mount point: Not mounted
    Format MS-DOS (FAT16)
I  attempted to erase the Card using Disk Utility; I selected the main entry on the LHS and I chose the format MS-DOS (FAT). This returned a Disk Erase Failed msg “Wiping volume data to prevent future accidental probing failed.”
I then tried again, this time selecting Windows NT File system (Tuxera NTFS) as I have Tuxera installed. This did not work either; it failed with the same error msg.
OK so then I tried Mac OS Extended (Journaled) but this failed as above also.
I am not quite sure why, but when I reinserted my card into my camera, my camera could not read the card so I had to reformat the card within the camera.
Oh yes, I also tried rebooting my Macbook with the card inserted but this made no difference.
I have run our of ideas. All help gratefully received.
    Thank you. Carol
PS ... apologies to anyone who saw my previous post in which I referred to my card as an SD card when in fact it is a Compact Flash card

I have this question too (0

Okay, I am making progress here now.
Using the link in my message above timestamped Dec 13, 2013 4:24 AM, I filed a tech support request describing the problem. Because they asked for details to confirm that the problem was with their product, I copied and pasted pretty much verbatim the text from my message above.
Around noon, same day, I got a message back from technical support saying they were sorry for the problem and would provide me with a replacement unit. Two hours later, I got a message from their RMA department saying that because the product has a two year warranty, they needed a copy of my receipt. I located a copy of my receipt for the purchase from Amazon on September 10, 2012 and forwarded that to them.
At this point, I am optimistic that it's going to work out okay. So far, I am very impressed with the responsiveness of Kingston's technical support and customer service departments.
If I actually do receive a working replacement, I will post an update here.
