Problems in stalling OSX

Hi there! I have a 13" macbook. My hard drive failed so I got a new one, and went to install OSX on it. It's an Apple OSX Install Disc, 1 & 2, and it takes me to the installer, asks me to select language then tells me "This software cannot be installed on this computer." Restart or Startup Disk.
Why is it doing this? Please advise... I miss my MacBook!
Thanks in advance!
Sarah

You may have to format the drive before the install will proceed.
To do this:
Insert Install Disc 1 and boot the computer with the C key held down.
From the Installer menu, choose *Disk Utility*.
In the left-hand column, select your hard drive--the one with the Manufacturer name & capacity.
Click the Partition tab.
Under *Volume Scheme*, choose 1 partition.
Click the Options button in the lower left corner and choose GUID partition scheme.
Under *Volume Information*, set the "Name" as *Macintosh HD" and the "Format" as *Mac OS Extended (Journaled)*.
Once this is done, give the install another try. If you need clarification on anything, let me know.

Somewhere at either Macworld or here I learned that DVDSP 2, DVDSP 3 and now DVDSP 4 "internally" are major re-writes.
Support for HD among a few other items along with QT 7 which comes with Tiger means sincerely that one set of applications/OS is not going to be stable.
Personally I think of all the issues possible its DVDSP vs QT.
Unless you move to DVDSP v4 the alternative is to wipe the disk and go back to Jaguar (10.2) or perhaps Panther but avoid upgrading QT beyond 6. I advocate wiping the disk because I'n not sure an archive and install to down shift to an earlier version of the OS is possible. If it is I'd still worry about mis-matched files in all sorts of locations.

  • Problem installing Mac OSX on my new MacBook hard drive...

    Hi,
i am beside myself again...(i just visited my local Genius bar this afternoon). Any help would be most appreciated! :o)
i purchased a 2.5 inch SATA Fujitsu 120GB laptop hard drive for my new MacBook. Followed the awesome* instructions on "how to replace/upgrade hard drive", and took out the original Toshiba HD. What the instructions* failed to mention was that i would eventually need to use a Torx screwdriver (star-shaped) to remove the caddy/carriage from the Toshiba HD. Got that the next day and replaced the Toshiba 80GB with my new 120GB Fujitsu drive..., it slipped into place nicely but i did notice that the Toshiba had four short wires protruding out to the right of the contacts, which my new Fujitsu didn't have... hmmmm...?!
anyways, tried to install Mac OSX on the new drive, booted up with the install disc... went thru' chosing the language (English), agreed to the second step... but when it came time to install, there was NO icon at all in the box where i am asked where i want to install it!!!
so i go to disk utilities, and see that my Fujitsu HD is indeed recognized, but none of the buttons in first aid are active... so i can't check it.
i figured that had to do with the four little wires, so i replaced the original Toshiba and made a reservation with Genius Bar to ask for assistance.
this afternoon, i explained my problem and was told the four wires have NOTHING to do with it... Lawrence (the genius) told me to (actually, first he said Apple does not recommend my doing this... and that i should go to a 3rd party computer store such as Dino to get help!) go back to disk utilities and partition, then erase this drive and then i will see the icon for this drive in the install box.
Well i did everything i was told to do and... still, there is no icon for my Fujitsu HD! :o(
I was able to partition, after which there was a disc0 under the Fujitsu drive on the left side of the disk utilities. When i go to system profiler, and click on ATA... it too shows the Fujitsu drive... but i cannot install because there is NOTHING to click on at the installation step! the "continue" button is not active and only the "back" button is actively mocking me!!!
i know many of you have successfully upgraded your hard drive... what am i doing wrong? Would a different brand work better? I know Seagate is quite popular, and OWC sells a Western Digital version as well as a Hitachi... do those four little wires make a difference? Would the Seagate come with those wires???
i am going crazy... thanks, and sorry for the long post, just wanted to let you know what i've done!
    blue skies,
ps. please feel free to email me at [email protected] if you think that would be better! :o)

    Hi,
...after getting back from school, my MacBook was STILL in the process of verifying and "supposedly" repairing... since i was gone for over 10 hours, i finally assumed the drive was either defective or just incompatible, and quit disk utility.
...this morning i went out and bought a new Seagate 120GB SATA (they didn't have 160GB SATA drives, only 160GB ultra-ATA drives) 2.5 inch HD. This one DID have those four wires to the right of the contacts... (i don't know how important they are), and after changing and exchanging the Toshiba/Fujitsu HDs, it was a breeze putting in the new Seagate drive.
Erased > patritioned > and sure enough, the icon showed up and the biggest smile showed up on my face as i finished installing! :o)
I contacted the original seller of my fujitsu hd (it was a 2.5 inch, 120GB, serial ATA notebook drive) and he was kind enough to say "just pack it up and send it back for a refund!" (minus shipping and re-stocking fees of course! :o)
Just wanted to mention that, the fujitsu hd WAS recognized by disk-utility and at the bottom left of the window it said that the fujitsu was "GUID partitioned"..., so i am still scratching my head as to why it didn't work?!
I want to thank everyone that offered advice, it was helpful and i feel more comfortable with my MacBook after this trying and very frustrating episode! :o)
    blue skies,

The CD that came with the E1200 will not launch the Linksys Connect software, as it is not compatible with Mac OSX 10.4.11. When I download Linksys Connect software from the support section of the Linksys site (version 1 or 2), same problem. I have read that I can use the E1200 with Mac OSX 10.4.11, but how? Getting very frustrated and would appreciate any practical advice/help. Thanks!

    Hi bassist71,
You may actually do the setup manually. It's done by accessing the setup page of the route through 192.168.1.1 and configuring the settings according to your Internet connection type. If you have a Cable connection, you may check this link, http://kb.linksys.com/Linksys/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=0ff4c94586a345d082828ec2161aaecf_3686.xml&pid=80&r... • Problem reinstalling Mac OSX 10.5

I am having a problem with reinstalling Mac OSX 10.5 after putting in the disc to do it everything was fine it asks what language I want and then it tells me that it can not be installed on this computer. I am trying to install it on a MacBook bought last year it is an intel machine and I have always kept up on the system updates. I don't want to take it in to a store more because I am stationed in Japan and getting it to a store requires more work than it is worth. If there is any advice on what to do I would greatly appreciate it.

You need the original grey system discs for each Mac model you own, not just to be able to reinstall the OS but also to reinstall the model's bundled retail application software (like iLife, if included) & to run the very model-specific Apple Hardware Test it contains if that is ever required.
The retail Leopard discs do not include either of these capabilities, so unless you are desperate to get Leopard reinstalled on the MacBook, you should try hard to find the original MacBook system discs. Failing that, you can contact AppleCare & request a replacement disc set. Generally speaking, Apple will ship one to you for a nominal replacement cost if you can show that you own that model by providing its serial number or other proof of purchase information.
Regarding installing Vista or Windows XP, both the retail Leopard & system discs include Boot Camp, which includes a convenient utility to format the hard disk for dual booting. While complicated, this can be done without that utility but you still need the hardware drivers the disc contains to get the full use of the Mac's hardware when running Windows. I have no idea if say an iMac's system discs have the Windows hardware drivers that also support a MacBook or if this too is model-specific, so on that you are on your own.

  • Problem with mac osx 10.6.4 and audio firewire device

ok i use an edirol fa-66 , the problem is a random one , sometimes when i play music with itunes , logic or even the preview mp3 feature , the sound go downsampled and then stops, the only way to return is turn off and turn on the audio interface. I had this problem time ago only with logic 9.0.2 but with the version 9.1.1 everithing got right. Now with osx 10.6.4 the problem come back on all the audio programs (not only logic),so i have returned to 10.6.3, everithing works fine.
    conclusion
in 10.6.4 there is something wrong with the core audio that is incompatible with edirol fa device.
maybe with osx 10.6.5 apple can resolve this?
i'm thinking to buy a motu device (they have their driver and don't use core audio)

  • Problems booting from OSX DVD and External FW HDD

I've been trying recently to take a Dual-Bay Firewire Harddrive unit running a Oxford Semiconductor OXFW911 Chipset. I have two 250GB Hard drives and on one of these I have it Partitioned into 3 partitions. One is my Scratch Partition, one is the Restore of a DVD Install Disc and the last is a "Pre-Installed" version of OSX. I want to be able to boot from the Install DVD partition and the "Pre-Installed" Partition. I have successfully Imaged the Install DVD Partition and was able to boot from that partition once to install OSX on a computer without a DVD drive.
Problem now is that I can't boot from the partition, or I should say, I select it from the Sys Prefs and it will pass the grey screen to a the blue background and just get hung up. It never displays the dialog to select a language to begin the install.
I also can not boot from the Install DVD. It will show up in the Startup Disk in Sys Prefs but always ends up hanging.
I've tried booting using "Option" and it displays my Internal HD and then two icons for the Install DVD Partition on the External FW Drive. Neither one allows for me boot up.
Any ideas for what I may be missing?
    Thanks,
    Russ

It appears that if the Partition with OSX was installed from anything besides the Restore Disc, the Powerbook won't boot to it.
I think this is ridiculous, and if I've went wrong somewhere, someone please correct me.
    Thanks.

  • Network problem after new OSX update download

    Greetings!
I've had a new (late 06) Intel 24" iMac networked wirelessly to my older iMac/cable modem/D-Link router very successfully since October. No problems and seamless set-up through the D-Link online wizard software.
Saturday I noticed an OSX upgrade to 10.4.8 (211mg) and went ahead and did the download on the wireless (Intel) iMac.
Upon restart, however, I have not been able to reconnect to my network. Airport is ON, but choosing my network name returns an error message. I have also attempted to reboot both cable modem and router, and reentered the D-Link wizard to both doublecheck the old network, and set up a new network, but saving these settings seems to fail by not recognizing the device, the router.
One of the error messages (on the wireless iMac) claims that my "settings have been changed by another application" (or to that effect) but does not give any clue as to how to determine what or where.
Also, since attempting to start from scrtch with the router, I no longer seem to get a full signal from the airport -- in Internet Connect, I no longer see a nice row of blue signal lights.
As you may be able to tell, I am new to networking, and the D-Link setup had helped make it simple -- tht is, I bumbled my way through it and was pleased with how well it worked. Now, after the OS update, not having the network is annoying -- and potentilly disastrous, as I need this machine online by Saturday.
Anyone able to give me a gentle hand, or nudge in the right direction?
    Thanks in advance!
    Bill
PS- Mac user since 1991! Wireless network user since only late October!

    Hi again,
Sorry, BDAqua, I didn't see your note. I don't quite understand the last line of your suggestion -- a number greater than the number of CPUs? Not sure what you mean...
Phil, thanks for your note, too.
I believe the answer to your first question is 802.11g -- this is what it was set to.
After trying again to connect, using my old passwords, I was able to see the blue signal strength barss, and the Airport icon flashed on and off a few times, but ultimately the connection attempt failed again every time I tried it.
At this point, I'm no longer confident that my router is sending out a recognizable signal -- is this possible?
Also, in the dialog box in which available networks are usually shown (which has not happened since my original connection in October), today I was faced with a choice I hadn't seen before: 2WIRE736 -- is this likely to be someone else's network (a neighbor's)? I was wondering -- I'd never seen that one before. However, my own network names do not show up for choosing, and when I use Internet Connect to request them (and add WPA Personal and passwords), the connection appears to fail immediately.
At this point, should I attempt an OSX reinstall? Or has something I described made some sense for you?
Again, still very appreciative of all your help and patience with my ignorance.
    Bill

  • Mail problems since latest OSX mountain lion update

Since I updated to the latest version of OSX Mountain Lion my Macbook Pro is very slow starting (up to 2 minutes) and my mail program is always stucking (colour-ball turning) so that I have to shut down and restart.
Does anybody have a solution for these problems?
    Thanks!

So it's a new 2012 non-Retina model... there are a couple of things that you might want to try - even with only 4GB of RAM (and I truly feel that 8GB is the 'sweet spot' for any modern MBP) you should be having slow startup or Mail beachballs.
First, let's boot into Recovery mode by holding down the Command and R keys during startup. At the bottom of the window, you'll want to open Disk Utility. Select your hard drive from the left pane and verify and then repair permissions. Some won't be 'fixed' but that's OK. Then with the hard drive still selected, verify your hard drive. If any errors pop up, go ahead and repair the hard drive.
If neither of these things fix the problem, you might want to redownload and reinstall 10.8.2, using the 'combo' updater found here. Also make certain that you install (or reinstall) the 10.8.2 supplemental update - here.
And if that doesn't work, we'll just have to dig a little deeper.

  • New Smart Album problems PSE9 Mac OSX

I am running PSE9 on a Macbook Pro and an Imac, both using Mac OSX. Creating a new Smart Album on the Macbook works perfectly but on the Imac it is unworkable. When I try to create a new Smart Album I just get a spinning ball and everything stops. I have uninstalled PSE9 and the Organizer and also removed all traces of them in the Library. Installing them again and making sure that I import only a dozen images into Organizer makes things slightly better. This time the spinning ball only lasted for a minute and then I could create a Smart Album. I then tried to create another Smart Album and had the spinning ball for a couple of minutes. Creating the third Smart Album was worse still. There is no problem with normal albums.
Has anybody got a way round this. I have about 9000 images, going back to 2001, and I want to put them into yearly albums so Smart Albums are a very useful tool.
A similar query by another member some time ago received no feedback.
    Thanks for any help.

Thanks for your suggestions. I have uninstalled pse9 and Organizer once again and removed all traces in "hard drive>library>application support>adobe". I have also removed the elements and organizer preferences and anything else I could see in my username/library. After doing all this I reinstalled PSE9 and Organizer and then searched for and installed the updates needed. I imported 12 images (jpg)  into Organizer and then tried to create three smart albums. In each case I got the spinning ball for about 40 seconds before I could enter the smart album name.
I have just tried to add a fourth smart album and the spinning ball has remained for ten minutes - presumably it has crashed.
    Help!

  • Quicktime problems after installing OSX 10.6.8

Ever since I have installed OSX 10.6.8,
    1. I'm unable to play avi files even with Perian installed. This message always comes up: The document "xxx.avi" could not be opened.
I've searched for solutions and some suggested that it might be DIVX pluggins problem so I have deleted all DIVX files/components I can find. Still, my problem wasn't solved.
    2. Playing .mp4 is fine, but I have trouble saving trimmed video into .mov. The messahe always comes up: The document “xxx” could not be saved as “xxx”.
Before I installed OSX 10.6.8, I always have no problem playing .avi files and saving trimmed videos.
    I'm using Quicktime player 10.0
So I thought it might really be the OSX problem, so I installed my old OS back using the DVD to 10.6.3. The problem is still there.
Can anyone suggest solutions for me please? Thank you.

Why do you think you need to change the IP address on the printer? Is the Mac using the same IP address or is it set to use a different IP address range (subnet)?
If the printer is connecting to a router then it most likely is obtaining its IP address (known as DHCP) from the router, which the Mac would also be doing by default. And if the printer is set to DHCP, turning it off for several minutes is sometimes enough for it to acquire a new IP address when it is turned back on.
If the printer has a static IP address set then it is often possible to change the IP address via the keyboard of the printer. If you can tell us what make and model you have, then someone who has this model can reply with the steps or we can refer to the manual for this model and provide you with the steps to take.

  • Wifi problem - connection stalls. MSI GE620DX

    Hi,
Bought this laptop May 2011. OS Windows 7 Home Premium, Intel Centrino Wireless-N 130 wifi adapter (from Windows device manager).
I have had the same Wifi problem from the beginning. The Wifi connection stalls every 5-20 seconds or so. The wifi stays connected but basically it is just like it is losing packets for some seconds. Like if I'm streaming a video (Internet or LAN, the exactly same thing) with VLC, the video starts to play nicely but after 5-10 seconds it starts to skip frames and stops for 1-4 seconds and then continues again. (But Youtube for example usually works better, because it buffers the video and can handle these network errors.)
Other services behave exactly similarly, like file transfer. It is relatively slow to begin with but also varies in speed. If I transfer from another computer in the same LAN (other computer with wired connection) the speed is about 600-700 kB/s. Web browsing sometimes needs a refresh on the browser to get the page to load. I tried pinging my router, results were: Sent = 2730, Received = 2589, Lost = 141.  Round trip fastest = 1 ms, slowest = 2407 ms, average = 7 ms.
So, you understand this is quite frustrating at times.
I initially thought the problem is just some incompability with my router and this MSI laptop Wifi. But I now have experience with four different networks in four different locations and the results are always very similar. So I am quite sure the fault is with the MSI. With wired connection there's no problems at all but that is not always possible and basically the Wifi should just work.
I have tried different driver version but absolutely no difference. The latest driver was just updated from Windows Update and no difference in performance. I have also tried to let both the Intel PROSet/Wireless software and Windows to manage the Wifi connections, but again, no difference what so ever.
    I'm kinda thinking it's a hardware problem.
Any advice or should I just contact MSI for repairs? Thanks in advance.

    Thanks Buluunee!
After your advice I decided to once again reinstall, starting by uninstalling the driver and also Proset. Once uninstalled both, I just installed the driver (or actually Windows found it automatically, altough I thought I had removed it). Now, without the Proset, this seems to be working!
There was something odd happening after a reboot, wifi connected but didn't get IP address. Another device worked fine on the same network. I had an extra router and this is working nicely even after some shutdowns. So, it seems this was after all a softaware problem.
