Problems in upgrade of Mac Mini from 256 RAM 512Ram

I recently upgraded my Mini from its 256RAM to 512 RAM. The new RAM is a Transcend DDR 400 whereas the old one was a Hynix DDR 400. After the upgrade I am experiencing difficulties during editing. Both in FCP 5 and i Movie. The clips do not flow smoothly. They keep freezing up. I have also run a hardware test and the RAM seems to be fine. The supplier is also running out of ideas. Does anybody have an idea what the problem could be.

Hi Terry,
I am new to the world of mac but your problem may not be ram related. I had a problem when using I Movie where the clips were freezing. It was due to filevault being used on the home folder which was where the clips were being imported into. It was resolved by importing them directly onto the hard disk instead. I think that because filevault encripts its files on-the-fly it creates slight delays in the streaming of the data causing it to fail or freeze.
Hope this helps - Daragh

  • Caught in a conundrum while trying to upgrade a Mac Mini (mid 2010) from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion

    Hi gang,
I am in a very frustrating position as I try to upgrade my Mac Mini (mid 2010) from OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard to whatever the latest version of Mountain lion is. The reason I am doing this is because the original hard drive died and the Mini sat there for 6 months before we decided to get a new hard drive and revive it.
I installed a new 500GB 7200rpm SATA drive and the problems began.
First I couldn't get Mountain Lion installed as a fresh OS installation (using both a USB drive and a DVD to no avail). It just wouldn't go. The grey Apple logo/loading screen would come up and just sit there doing nothing while the loading icon spun.
I then tried installing Snow Leopard (the OS that the Mini came with when it was new). After some messing around, that got done.
However, a peculiar thing happens when the Mini boots. Everything loads up into Snow Leopard, but although the mouse curser moves, I cannot click on anything or use the keyboard for 4-5 minutes. Then it just work (I am typing this on the Mini). This happens every time.
Now, when I updated to 10.6.8, I was able to load up the App Store and download the Mountain Lion install app. I clicked it and went through the initial copying of files and then the restart, but after the reboot, the grey loading screen would not progress. I rebooted again and held down the Option key to check out the available boot volumes, and all I saw was the installation DVD I had in there for Snow Leopard and a hard disk volume called "Mac OS X Installer."
So I booted into the Snow Leopard install DVD and opened Disk Utility to check things out. I did a verify disk and a permissions repair. Interestingly, the first repair I did gave me the message that the ACL was missing from Volumes and that is was fixed. I read something somewhere which talked about the Access Control List and mouse/keyboard issues. But who knows. When I boot back into the Mini as normal I am returned to the fully-functioning Snow Leopard installation, like nothing happened.
And now here is the kicker: it appears that the Firewire bus is hooped. In the Profiler, when I view the FireWire settings I get the message, "Warning: Unable to list FireWire devices." So I am pretty sure the one thing I cannot do is boot the Mini into target disk mode attached to my Mac Pro and installed Mountain Lion that way.
So to recap: I can't finish the Mountain Lion installation because the install won't continue after rebooting because there is something wrong with the underlying base system, which might be hardware (FW bus) related. I think.
    Some things I have tried:
    Resetting the SMC
    Resetting the PRAM
    Reparing permissions
Booting into Safe Mode (doesn't work)
Booting into Verbose Mode to observe what happens (I get the "Can't load the Bootcache.playlist" error, which I suspect is related to the screwed up FW bus)
Trying to boot using Internet Recovery (doesn't work)
Booting into Single User Mode and attempting the "fsck -y" etc. sequence to try and repair the ACL that way
    So I am stuck.
I guess the question is, should I get an external HD enclosure and install Mountain Lion onto the hard drive that way and hope it works when I put it back into the Mini?
Any other ideas? I have spent a couple days ******* around with this is am running out of ideas...
    Any advice would be appreciated!

Addendum: I read on a post here (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=420169) about removing some kext files in order to trick OSX into thinking that there were no FireWire ports.
I followed the instructions and removed from /System/Library/Extensions/ the following files:
    IOFireWireSerialBusProtocolTransport.kext
    IOFireWireAVC.kext
    IOFireWireFamily.kext
    IOFireWireIP.kext
    IOFireWireSBP2.kext
I restarted and BAM...Snow Leopard booted crazy fast and the mouse and keyboard worked instantly.
The System Profiler says "No FireWire ports were found."
So this tells me that the FW port is probably the culprit and is messing up the installation.
So how do I hack the Mountain Lion installer and tell it to ignore the FW port, which is obviously quite dead? Or is there something I can do to the Base system that is similar?

  • My mac mini is 2007 and has a core duo so I cannot install lion which needs a 2 core duo. Does this exclude me from the iCloud or is there a way I can upgrade my mac mini?

Mac mini duo core. I want to join the iCloud as I have MobileMe . However my mac mini has a dou core and not a 2 duo core I cannot by the lion app to install. Is there anyway I can upgrade my mac mini to 2 duo core? Or get the iCloud installed any other way?

You must have Lion to use iCloud, although you can still access iCloud.com for the web services. Your email is unaffected.

  • 10.6.7 - High wifi latency on Mac Mini (from mid 2007)

    Hi!
I have a MacBook Pro from mid 2009. It is upgraded to 10.6.7 and works with absolutely no problems. However I also have a Mac Mini from mid 2007 and since upgrading to 10.6.7 the wifi latency has been extremely high--averaging 5 seconds or more if I run a ping command on the IP address of my network gateway.
Last night I restored the system to its original OS X version (10.5) and the wifi worked great. Then I upgraded with my original Snow Leopard disc (10.6) and the wifi still worked great. Finally, I updated via the Software Updater to 10.6.7. The wifi instantly took on the high latency again. If I switch to my Windows installation via Bootcamp, the wifi works splendidly. The problem is definitely with 10.6.7. It is not with my Mac Mini hardware or with my router.
Some things I tried to resolve the problem (none of them worked):
I tried creating a new "Location" and reconnecting with that.
    I tried zapping my PRAM
No need to delete my preferences files because I just did a complete OS restore
I have not changed my routers security settings because that is not an acceptable solution (some people suggest disabled WEP or WPA--I'm running WPA2).
Any help that you could provide would be great. I've never had a problem with Apple hardware or software before this, so this experience is disappointing.

    Thanks for your response.
My router is a Linksys WRT160N.
I'm a little doubtful that it's just a matter of 10.6.7 and my router, since my MBP is currently running 10.6.7 and doing just fine. I'm fairly certain that the fault is primarily with 10.6.7 itself.

  • Aluminum Keyboard won't wake Mac mini from sleep (sometimes)

I just bought the new aluminum keyboard (wired). Its great, and looks amazing next to my mac mini......except it won't wake mac mini from sleep sometimes. When this occurs, I can tap on any key but the machine won't wake up. The only work around I have is to attach my ipod, which wakes the mini. Oddly this only happens sometimes. I can't isolate any other variable which may be influencing this behavior.
I'm running leopard and didn't think I needed to install the 1.2 keyboard software update.
I called Apple support, and they told me the problem is that I'm using a non-apple mouse (I have a microsoft optical wired mouse connected to the keyboard's USB port). I don't believe them as i've used this mouse connected to my previous Apple keyboard for years and never had a problem.
    Can anyone help?

Regrettably, I can't offer a solution to the problem stated in the title. Instead, I experience the same problem.
    Wireless Mighty Mouse circa 2007
    Wireless Apple Keyboard circa 2007
Bluetooth dongle (a bluetooth thingy connected to a USB port)
Things worked fine until an upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard. Following the upgrade there were several mouse related issues. Those were resolved. One issue remains: waking by use of mouse or keyboard.
The setup (Same for keyboard and mouse)
System Preferences --- Bluetooth --- Keyboard Connected --- Keyboard Paired. The "Discoverable" box is checked.
    Digging deeper
System Preferences --- Bluetooth --- Advanced --- "Allow Bluetooth device to wake this computer" --- This option is unchecked and is greyed out, inaccessible. Two of the other options are checked and available: the options about opening the Bluetooth assistant and the one about prompting incoming audio.
I've searched other posts. However, many of the other posts seem to conflate this Wake/Sleep issue with various connection issues. Thus, the advice given is a bit confusing to this amateur. Might one of you experts have a solution to this annoying little problem?
    Thanks for your interest.

  • Anyone know when Apple will bring out a patch to fix the volume problem you get on mac mini after downloading OS 10.8.5

Anyone know when Apple will bring out a patch to fix the volume problem you get on mac mini after downloading OS 10.8.5?

Only Apple knows the answer to whether or not there is a verified problem and if so when will a fix be released.  As is their custom, Apple does not talk about these things and the rules of these communities prohibit speculation about future udates or upgrades. It is probably safe to say if a fix is deemed necessary it will be called OS X 10.8.6.

  • Mac Mini (late 2012) ram upgrade: 8gb dual channel vs 10gb? Flex Mode?

I attempted to upgrade my Mac Mini (late 2012) from the stock 4gb of ram to 8gb. However, I messed up and didn't pay attention when buying the ram online and ordered 1x8gb stick rather than 2x4. Will losing dual channel with a 2/8 combo (10gb) make a difference that I will notice? Will having the additional 2gb make up for any lost performance? And finally, is flex mode available with the Mac Mini so that I'd still be running 4gb at dual channel and 6gb single?
The 8gb stick arrived and I'd like to install it but Ill send it back and get the 2x4 depending on what I hear back.
    Thanks
    Ryan

to the best of my knowledge, when upgrading your Mac mini's RAM, you must upgrade it with 2 SODIMM's at a time. When I bought my Mac mini Late 2012 model it had all the base level specs. Pretty soon the stock 4GB (2x 2GB) just wasn't fast enough. I bought a Crucial 16GB upgrade from Amazon (2x 8GB) and now my Mini is much faster especially when I am using Photoshop.
Only thing I would do next is trying to swap the boot HD to a SSD, but am unsure as my Mac mini late 2012 is under AppleCare through December 2015 and I do not know if it would void the warranty.

  • Dear I need to upgrade my Mac Bookpro from 10.4.11 to the latest software is there is any solutions in order to buy install the software online through itunes or so

Dear I need to upgrade my Mac Bookpro from 10.4.11 to the latest software is there is any solutions in order to buy install the software online through itunes or so

Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
(NB: PowerPC applications can still be run in Snow Leopard using Rosetta, but they will not work in later versions of OS X.)
The OS 10.6 Snow Leopard install DVD is available for $19.99 from the Apple Store:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    and in the UK:
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard to bring it up to 10.6.8, or download the combo update from here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Check via Software Update whether any further updates are required, particularly to iTunes.
You should now see the App Store icon in iTunes, and you now need to set up your account:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4479
You can now upgrade to Mavericks OS 10.9 for free IF you have one of the following Macs, with not less than 2GB of RAM, and at least 8GB of available space on your hard drive:
    iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
    MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later), (15-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later), (17-inch, Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac Mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
    iCloud system requirements:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4759
If you cannot run Mavericks you can purchase the code to use to download Lion from the App Store (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard):
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion
    or Mountain Lion:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6377Z/A/os-x-mountain-lion

I upgraded my Mac Mini (Early 2009) to Mountain Lion and I have no sound anymore - I do not see internal speakers in sound system preferences. I tried resetting PRAM and NVRAM, tried headphones jack plugging-in-out trick, nothing works so far. Any ideas?

  • Mac Mini 2.1 RAM + HD upgrade

I have a Mac Mini 2.1 (1.83GHZ, Core2Duo) and I am wondering whether there is much to gain from upgrading RAM and the HD.
    1. Is 2 x 2gb the optimal RAM upgrade?
    2. Where does one get the best quality RAM for my Mac Mini?
    3. What is the best HD upgrade?
    4. Where does one get the best quality HD for my Mac Mini?
If I upgrade the RAM and HD, will my Mac Mini 2.1 be suitable for OS X Lion and photo applications like Photoshop and Lightroom? Or are there other limitations that would suggest that I rather should save up funds for a newer Mac instead of spending money and using energy on upgrading my Mac Mini 2.1 ?
This question has possibly been discussed many times before, and I have tried to search the forum without finding the info I am looking for.
I am grateful for any help with my question!

4GB of RAM is the max, see > OWC Memory Mac mini plus there is an HDD upgrade there as well, but really your best option is to just save up and get a new Mac.
