Problems installing an SSD on new MBP- shows up unformatted with only 8MB

Hi all... hoping you can help....
I just received my new 2.66ghz 15"MBP today as well as an Intel X-25 160GB SSD. I booted the computer with the stock drive to ensure everything was working fine as shipped... perfect.
I downloaded and installed all recommended software updates and added 4GB RAM (total of 8).
I thought I was home free when I replaced the stock HDD with the Intel X-25. After I installed the drive, I used the Install DVD to boot with in hopes of installing 10.6 on the SDD. Once launching the installer failed to recognize the SDD. Disk utility will recognize the SDD, but states the drive is unformatted and has a capacity of 8 MB (with an M).
Some google searching didn't turn up much. I am unable to verify, or repair the disk using Disk Utility, and an attempt to "erase" the disk was met with an error.
Anyone with similar experience with either MBP or SDD that can provide some insight?
Thanks! Craig

Return the faulty SSD.

  • Can I install my Aperture in new MBP

So i have Aperture in my current MBP. Can I also install it in my new MBP or do I have to buy it again?

If you want to have the software on both systems at the same time you must purchase another copy. Otherwise you must remove the copy of Aperture from your current MBP before installing Aperture on your new MBP. The license does not allow installation of a single copy on two laptops at the same time.

  • Problem Installing SSD in new MBP

Hi, I thought this was gonna be easy: installing a new Samsung 128GB SSD in the optical CD/DVD drive of my new 13" MBP. How wrong I was. I thought the H/W bit would be tough, but the S/W got me instead. What I did:
I left the original HDD (500GB) in the bay & put the Hardwrk's Adapter (& SSD) in the CD/DVD slot - tricky but no real problem.
Rebooted & installed CCC, used DU to format the SSD as a Single GUID partition with MAC OS (Journaled) format - seemed OK.
Used CCC to clone Everything on the old drive to the new one, again said OK. Checked the SSD in DU, repaired permissions, etc.
Reboot, Option key, boot from SSD - here's where things start going wrong. Takes 30s to boot, so cannot be an SSD :-(
In DU the original HDD is still root "/" mount point, so the reboot failed and it reverted back to the SSD.
Tried taking out the HDD & boot only from SSD - Mac fails to properly boot. Reset.
Considered that it might be a CCC problem, or maybe a DU error in formatting, so today:
Booted from MAC OS X ML Recovery USB stick, redid the partition step, but did not reformat the drive.
Reinstall ML fresh, was taking too long (c.90m) so I left it running, will check at lunch time...
Have checked here & on the net, and I do not seem to be doing anything wrong, this usually works for most people - any ideas?
I could try putting the SSD in the HDD bay, but it should work from the 6MB optical bay in a new MBP?
Any thoughts on what went wrong or what I could do to fix this would be most appreciated...

Yes, I thought of that (I was prepared). :-) So I put the new Samsung SSD in my PC to check the firmware version first (as you can't do this on a Mac), which was up-to-date, so nothing to do there. I hope this did not cause a problem with the disc (which I am beginning to suspect - ironic because I chose this disc for Mac compatability), as I set it to GUID partition on the PC ready for speed testing (which I then could not do).
Update: the OS re-install from the USB key failed, did not even look like a working drive this time (single folder red warning icon on it), and didn't come up properly on the Option Reboot list. Based on the above I went into the Recovery Partition from the HDD & did another reinstall from there. This time I changed the partition type to something else (Mac), then back to GUID single & reformatted it, Mac OS (J). It is busy doing the OS install, c.90m again, so will check tonight, but do not hold out much hope...
Only option I can see now is a H/W problem with the CD/DVD drive adapter, so will try one last time by removing this & swapping the SSD for the HDD then reinstall OS direct from USB key.
Should this fail I am all out of options, as the SSD is useless as a 2nd disk or external from the MBP. Only option would be to try to clone the OCZ Vertex III 120GB SSD in the PC onto the Samsung, use this in W7, and swap the OCZ into the Mac? Or just give up & sell it on ebay. :-(
PS: On reading other posts on (Smasung) SSD replacement for MBP HDD, I should note that I did NOT copy the Recovery partiton from the old HDD to the new drive, figuring the old disc would still be in the machine (as a data volume), so I could save a little space on the SSD itself, I was told this would not be a problem, any thoughts?

  • Problem installing Windows 8.1 on MBP

Ok so I was having bluetooth issue in Windows 7, which is a different issue, so I decided to try Windows 8.1 Pro X64
Using boot camp I get to the part where Windows is asking where to install.
I choose Drive 0 Partition 4: Boot Camp and format it.
Once that is done I click next and I get a message at the bottom saying:
"Setup was unable to use the existing partition because the system volume does not contain the required free space."
Is this talking about the EFI partition? The EFI partition is showing 1mb of free space
There is also another partition: Drive 0 Partition 3 that has 619MB and 0 free.
Also this is an ISO from a Microsoft MSDN account not the regular one.
I think I may try Windows 8 instead and see if that works. Any idea?

I want to install window 8.1 on my iMac by using bootcamp and i have a problem.
First, I have created a bootable USB stick with window 8.1. I started bootcamp assistant and i notice that i have only 2 options: don't have create a window 7 or later version install disk.
From iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2011) - Technical Specifications, you have a iMac with a built-in Optical drive.
    Slot-loading 8x SuperDrive with 4x double-layer burning (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
From Boot Camp 5.1: Frequently asked questions - Apple Support
Can I install Windows from an ISO image?
To find out if your Mac supports that feature, open Boot Camp Assistant, then click the Continue button. If you see a checkbox labeled “Create a Windows 7 or later install disk,” your Mac can install Windows from an ISO image.
Is your iMac Optical drive not working?
So I googling the internet a lot then I found it on youtube. I change the plist file in boot camp assistant by deleting pre and add code on terminal. Then i got a first option(create a window 7 or later version install disk).
I made again a bootable usb stick with window 8.1 from ISO with the bootcamp assistant first option.
This creates a new set of problems and on older Macs does not work very well. Bootcamp Assistant sets the Mac NVRAM to boot from the Optical drive.
Then when i restarted the Mac keeping the ALT-Option pressed it was only Macintosh HD , recovery-10.10 and EFI Boot.
Why i don't have window partition? I'm so confused. What i've miss?
EFI Boot is the Windows installer.
On your Mac, you need to use both a USB and a Physical DVD to install Windows.

  • Put SSD in new MBP and it's slower

Alright guys so this is something I've been trying to figure out but haven't had much luck.  Previously I had a mid 2010 15" MBP that I put a crucial M4 SSD in.  When I installed the SSD I was getting a read speed of 268 Mb/s and a write of 239 Mb/s.  So yesterday I upgraded slightly to a late 2011 15" MBP and I pulled the SSD out of my old laptop and placed it in my new.  I did completely wipe the SSD and reinstall yosemite.  But when I run a speed test now my write is only 120 Mb/s and my read speed increased dramatically to 390 Mb/s as it should since this is sata 3 capable.  My questions is why would the same SSD be slower in a newer laptop with better specs.  Thanks for any help on this one!

If you run your car into a tree, do you expect the manufacturer to repair it for free?  Using a MBP and drinking at the same time is hazardous multi-tasking.  Don't do it.
    Ciao.

  • Change 250GB 5400rpm to SSD in new MBP 13

    Hi,
Could I get help choosing best SSD alternative for my brand new MBP 13!
Which is best fit. I want 250GB SSD. There are so many alternatives i want the best that suit whitout complication. I have a 250GB 5400rpm for now.
Any suggestion? Is there anything i must do or know before I change.
    Cheers,

In your case, I would clone the old HDD to the SSD using Carbon Copy Cloner. See my user tip -> Upgrading Your MacBook Pro with a Solid State Drive that explains the scenario.
    Good luck,

  • Problems installing Windows 7 on new iMac?

I've heard from users on other forums that there are some problems installing Windows 7 on the new iMacs, mainly that the display goes blank partway through installation due to some kind of driver issue. Can anyone confirm this or elaborate? I've heard there is a workaround but it sounds a bit complicated and I'm wondering if I should just wait until Apple patches Boot Camp with full Win7 support.

I would wait until Apple updates Boot Camp to officially support Windows 7.

  • Is it possible to install Lion on a new MBP (non-retina)?

From what I can conclude, there doesn't seem to be any way to install Lion on a brand new MBP with Mountain Lion pre-installed (purchased today). I have the Lion installer but only for a MacPro, so presumably that won't work. Has anyone found a way to do this?

While it's probably unlikely to work, if you can find someone with the same generation MBP that shipped with Lion you can have them install Lion to an empty external drive and you can try booting from that. You will need the specific version of Lion to these system that cannot be downloaded from the App Store and currently must be installed from an Internet Recovery. If you can boot then you should be able to clone that to your internal drive and be on your merry way.
There is a little crossover where systems that shipped with ML will in fact boot Lion depending on when they were actually manufactured. Hopefully yours is one of them.

  • Swapping HDs with new MBP: What to do with OS X?

I purchased a new MacBook Pro 2.3GHz i7 quad-core from the Apple Store Thursday morning with the 750GB 5400RPM hard drive. I now have time to set up the new machine but I am hung up on how best to deal with swapping hard drives. My current MBP has a 640GB 7200RPM hard drive with OS X 10.6.6 installed. I am a photographer so the faster drive makes a big difference with large photo catalogs. I had planned on swapping out the new 750GB 5400RPM drive for my current 640GB 7200RPM hard drive and then get back to work, however, I am concerned that the OS X installed on the 640GB 7200RPM hard drive will not be compatible with the new machine's processor. Should I do the swap and then boot up from the new laptop's OS X install disks and do a OS X only install? I have never done a OS X only install/update, will any other data be altered, any suggestions on how to proceed? Should I just swap, start up and then run Apple Software Update?
I would prefer avoiding an erase and install, cloning, migration, Adobe registration issues, etc and going the HD swap and OS X disk update route if it can work.
    Thanks for your input,
    Chad

I found this discussing looking to do the same thing-ish.
I just bought a new i7 quad MacBook Pro (delivered today). Less than 4 weeks ago, I had picked up an i5 MacBook Pro. Since I'm still in my return window, I decided the buy the new one, do the hard drive shuffle and return the less new one.
I have a 500gb 7200rpm drive AND a 120gb SSD in the drive bay. I really never considered just swapping the drives into the new machine, but I thought I'd search and see if anyone had any success.
I had a couple thoughts on how I'm going to do the shuffle:
    1) Superduper clone the SSD back onto my 500gb. I the system as it is now started life on the 500gb. Superduper (registered) will do a backup only updating the changed files which shouldn't be too bad. I have my user directories (separate from the startup disk) on the 500gb so SD won't have to copy any of those files. Then I figured I could use the migration software to copy all my 'stuff' (minus user directory) back onto the newly reformatted SSD with 10.6 installed onto the new MBP.
    2) I was noticing that migration assistant can work from Time Machine, so I'll probably do that since my SSD time machine backup doesn't contain my gigantic user directory. I'll still do a SuperDuper backup just to be safe.
I'm tempted to throw my hard drive into an external usb to see if it boots just for the heck of it.

  • New MBP won't print with Wifi HP All-in-one that it cam with from Apple

Hey, all just got a new MBP and the free HP all in one wireless printer.
After installing all the software and drivers I managed to bonjour it through our router or direct through USB.
    Same on my iMAc
However, Wifi will hang for a few minutes , then start to print and then finish on the print queue but the page will be half printer etc.. With USB it prints straight away and complete pages.
Is this a bug in the drivers or what?
    Thanks all,

iTunes, iPhoto, and Safari all use the same protocol for wireless device finding for shared items as the printer. Bonjour may be holding things up, if other items are attempting to share data over the network.

  • New MBP Does not work with wifi after migration assistant.

Old Mac book did'nt Play well with some wifi got new one and it worked fine.  Migrated preferences from old MBP to new now  we one has the same issues?

This is what I've been telling people. When you migrate an older system to a newer one you never know what is going to be carried over.
This has been a issue with Windows PCs for a long time.
Best is to copy personal files from old to new. Install programs on the new one and make all changes manually to system preferences.
Good luck hope you get it working.

  • New MBP owner needs help with iTunes

I just bought a new MBP and I have all of my music (iTunes) on my old Windows XP PC. There is about 100mb of music and I'd like to keep it all on that hard drive as I don't want to load up my MBP HD.
I do want my MBP to be the main account for iTunes so I can make changes to tags and rating but I just want it to use the files on the networked HD. It is not necessary that I keep iTunes on the Win XP machine.
One more thing, if possible, I would like to keep a copy of only my 4 & 5 Star rated songs on my MBP (about 10GB) for when I am away. I cannot figure out how to do this. I can sort them in iTunes or create a playlist for these but I don't know how to export copies of only those files. Does anyone know how I can do this?

  • New MBP C2D-SR 15" with old SMC Firmware?

I found this odd - just got a new MBP C2D SR 15" and checked the SMC version. It's 1.16f8 but the latest version is apparently 1.2f10 from last year.
As with a lot of other posters here, my machine seemed to be running hot and I wonder if this is related.
    Should I update?

  • Can I run the new Mac pro (6.1) with only one stick of ram?

Will that cause any problems. And if not how much will the overall quality be affected. it won't be a permanent solution, but for a few weeks at least. So can it happen? Can I run the Mac pro 2013 with only one memory stick?

    Per this
    http://blog.macsales.com/22745-mix-and-match-more-memory-faster-mac-pro-2
the 2013 Mac Pro is the only MP that can use a single stick of memory.
