Problems installing my Canon MX870 on my Mac

I just bought a Canon MX 870 and i haven't be able to set up a wireless conection to my Mac Pro. When i tried to set up with the Canon IJ Network tool.... this message appears:
The printer could not be detected. Please confirm the following:
- The network settings are correct.
- The printer is turned on.
- The printer is not used from another computer.
I have been trying other solutions that i found in other topics but iit didn't work
HELP PLEASE!

Hello, Laguaji. Two things:
1/ We just finally burned out a Canon Pixma MP something-or-other, which was years old, and was supposed to run on Windows and on Macs. However, we found when we tried to make that happen that it could only run on +one or the other+! Canon tech support had been very responsive by email, but I still chastised them for over-enthusiastic advertising. (I think they got over it.) Whether that still applies or not I have no idea. But the explanation +at the time+ was that the printer itself self-configured differently depending on whether it was set up for Windows or for Mac OS X, and could not be configured for both.
2/ I replaced my old Canon with a Pixma MX 870, and it is wonderful (after one day). We're an "all-Mac" household now so cannot test my old PC vs. Mac issue. Anyway, installing the software from CD, we get to the Canon IJ Network Tool, and eventually it tries to locate the printer - and failed to do so, repeatedly. I could easily see on the Airport Utility that the printer's wireless setup had worked and it had an IP. I could even tell that the System Preferences' Printer and Fax pane's "+" button could detect the printer. But the IJ Network Tool could not. The operator's manual directed me here and there and I tried what I could but what do I know about IP filters, etc., and finally I just tried what I found around here somewhere, and added it from Printer and Fax. That worked perfectly. Then, to access it from my wife's MacBook, we had to use the CD again, and - this time the IJ Network Tool found the printer right away. That enabled us to "register" (whatever that means), etc., although not on the "primary" computer. Then I went through the same with my MacBook and the "find printer" part of the installation never even appeared. The installation program just skipped it, and was done.
So, that's all just weird, and none of that appears in the "multiple computers" section of the installation guide, but *testing so far with printing, faxing, copying and scanning from multiple computers is working fine*.
(By the way, we had replaced the old Canon with an HP Officejet 8500 910, and it was horrible. It kept locking up and needing to be rebooted [and then did a Gates-style "always turn off with power button" message, whereas whatever it did to itself it did to itself], and the wireless connection was not stable ... after days of this and three tech-support calls, I returned it for a no-argument refund at Staples and got the Canon. I understand that the HP Officejet 8500s have done that to lots of other people, judging by the many, many such forum threads around the Net on that subject. The Canon took too long to install because of the "not detected" message, and the many steps I took to work through that, but at least it seems to be working.)
I tried to run Canon's Speed Dial Utility just now on my iMac, and the printer was again "not detected" ... sheesh!

Having problems installing Canon MG3170. Anyone have any solutions?  Here is what I have tried:-
-Installed from provided Canon disk, firstly with wireless connection, then using USB connection.  Printer could not be added because the Macbook returns that the software is not available from Apple for both types of connections.
-Uninstalled software from the Canon disk, checked for software updates, then downloaded drivers (printer and scanner) from Canon Website.  Again tried to install using wireless connection then USB connecton.  Printer could not be added because Macbook returns that the software is not available from Apple
-Uninstalled drivers downloaded direct from Canon Website and plugged printer into Macbook using USB, Macbook recognised the printer and searched for the software, again Macbook returns that hte software is not available from Apple.

    nrg adjusta,
Sorry it took me a while to repsond, Ive been pretty busy with school and work. But for my hard drive problem, I did hours and hours of more research and trying countless ways of installing and tweaking things in my laptop and absolutely nothing worked that I could do. It was very irritating because I felt like I was so close to fixing it and I was just missing a step somewhere. Though It still boggles me why the disk utility shows a different capacity for the HD's. One thing I'm going to try next is replacing the hard drive cable that goes from the internal HD to the macbook. I read somewhere that sometimes those can go bad over time, and also if you get a new, modern hard drive, sometimes the old cable (for some odd reason) might not be compatible with the new HD. So i want to test it out for myself to see it that is the actual culprit.

Once I get the cable and install it I'll let you know the results and if it helped at all.
Have you made any progress on your hard drive at all? If worst comes worst for you, you can probably get a SATA to USB cable and try to reformat it that way (this is the way that worked for me, but the only problem was it wouldn't be recognized when I installed it internally. Thats why i want to try getting the new cable), and if it still wont recognize it after that, you can just leave it outside of your mac, and just boot from that. The only thing that ***** about that is you have this big hard drive handing off the side of your mac when ever you need to use it.
Heres a link for a SATA to USB. this one is good because is compact and protects the HD from damage and most static electricity.

Im still continuing my search for the answer and once i find it (if ever!) I'll post it.

  • Problem installing Palm Desktop 4.0 on Mac (Intel CPU + OS 10.5.6)

    Hello,
When installing Palm Desktop 4.0 on my Mac (MacBookPro= Intel CPU + OS 10.5.6), the installation fails when trying to install the last files (.prc files). I cannot find any installation log to know what the problem exactly is. If I try anyway to run the software, Palm Desktop seems to run OK, but HotSync Manager fails (error related to "PPC-lib").
The problem is I am still using my old but fine Visor, so I don;t think I can install a more recent version of Palm Desktop.
    Thanks for any help  !
    Post relates to: Visor Deluxe

Hello Walter and welcome to the Palm forums.
For such a new Mac, I'm fairly certain, you are going to have to use Palm Desktop 4.2.1 Rev D or later (I believe that Rev D is the latest) for Mac OS X.  You can download Palm Desktop 4.2.1 Rev D for Mac OS from the Palm website.  You may need to pick a newer Palm handheld to gain access to the download link.  If that is the case, pick the Tungsten T5, it should require Palm Desktop 4.2.1 Rev D.

  • Problems Installing Reader X and FlashPlayer on Mac running 10.7.3

Attempted to install both Reader X and Flashplayer on two new Macs, both running 10.7.3. Downloads went without a problem. Unfortunately, installations begin but never complete. No error messages are posted, the installer simply never completes. No antivirus SW installed. Was able to download Reader 9.

Grab the install.log file for Acrobat located at "/var/log/install.log".
Paste the contents in the forum.
I'm guessing but you probably have a perms issue somewhere interfering with the installation.

  • Problem installing 11.6.602.180 on Mac

So, it looks like Adobe has changed the Flash Player install AGAIN.  Different file name, different path to binary.  And now running the installer from the command line no longer works.  PLEASE, no "Well, just double-click the installer" replies... if you only have to worry about one or two Macs and don't mind walking around, that's fine, but that isn't an option in my environment.
    Error I'm getting:
Mar 26 12:38:41 imac Install Adobe Flash Player[46160] <Error>: kCGErrorFailure: Set a breakpoint @ CGErrorBreakpoint() to catch errors as they are logged.
_RegisterApplication(), FAILED TO establish the default connection to the WindowServer, _CGSDefaultConnection() is NULL.
~/Library/Logs/FlashPlayerInstallManager.log does not contain anything useful, just old entries on some machines and nothing on others.
Looks to me like someone was just a little too GUI-happy when they packaged this version.  I can't think of any reason to be calling "WindowServer" from the shell.

Is there a reason you are installing from the command line (ie. distributing flash to client systems, etc)?  The Flash Player installer that you are getting from get.adobe.com/flashplayer is an online version that isn't meant to be run from the command line.  For admins that distribute Flash Player, we have a distribution program (http://www.adobe.com/products/players/flash-player-distribution.html) and download site that we host files on.

  • Problem installing Web Premium CS5.5 on mac

    Hello,
I just got a new computer and I'm trying to install Creative Suite 5.5 Web Premium on a Mac OS X 10.9, but I keep getting this error message when I try opening the .dmg:
"The following disk images couldn't be opened: image not recognized."
So far, I've tried downloading it from these two places multiple times, but no luck:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs5-5-product-downloads.html
    http://prodesigntools.com/adobe-cs5-5-direct-download-links.html
    http://prodesigntools.com/adobe-cs5-5-direct-download-links.html
Separately, I tried using the adobe download assistant, but it doesn't let users download any CS products.

    Hi fyonkof,
Please try downloading the file from a different network connection and check.
It seems to me that the downloaded .dmg file might be correct. To verify, please copy the downloaded .dmg file to a flash drive and try running it on a different Mac and see. That would isolate the issue being with the file or the Mac.

  • Canon MX870 couldn't print after Mt. Lion installed

After installing Mountain Lion, my printer, Canon MX870 stopped printing with error message "Stopped - "Filter" Failed."
I downloaded the newest drivers from Canon, but it still didn't work. I spent over 30 mins with Canon's tech support, went through deleting printer from System preference "printer & scanner" list, disconnect printer, "resetting printing system," rebooting computer, then reconnecting printer, adding printer on "printer & Scanner" list again..... still didn't work. Canon tech support suggested to contact Apple, so I got Apple support help. Basically, we went through exactly same steps over and over,... didn't work. Then, I was suggested to use disk utility to verify disk, repair disk permission... restart and do above steps again, still didn't work. Next apple care guy suggested to "reinstall Mountain Lion" all together. I did. Still didn't work. He looked into communities comments and suggested to download 3rd party printer drive..... ahhhh, you are getting paid to support customers with your professional knowledge. Just looking up some solutions in the community posts and if it could solve the problem, I had already done so and didn't need to set up phone supports.   I was this close to give up....
As the last resort, I decided to manually delete all Canon folders from Library and application folder, restart computer, then installed new drivers again. Guess what, it worked.
So, if any of you having the same issues as I had, I recommend you to MANUALLY DELETE printer files. Evidently, "deleting printer" or "resetting printing system" via System preference don't delete all the existing Canon printer folders. (I wonder why AppleCare guys never suggested to do this....it could save me many hours.)

Hi Pahu. I've read some of your answers to other Canon printer owners and they've helped those people, so hopefully you can help me out. I tried both a regular cleaning and deep cleaning as well as a nozzle test, but that didn't fix the printing issue. Same goes for a factory reset on the actual printer.
So did the black ink appear with the nozzle test? If it did, then the black head/tank are okay.
    libbeh wrote:
The only thing I think could be causing this specific printer issue is possibly the chip on the ink cartridges. They aren't authentic Canon ink cartriges, but they worked before (however, on my PC). I purchased the ink cartridges a few years ago (2006 to be exact), so it is possible that the chip is interfering with the printer being fully printing all documents?
If the nozzle test does show the black ink then it won't be an issue with the cartridges.
But if there is no black on the nozzle test, and the deep clean has not helped, then you may just need to purchase a new black cartridge. With you purchasing the cartridges in 2006 and having the printer stored for a period of time, then it is quite likely that the nozzles in the print head have dried up and stopping the ink flow.

I'm kind of annoyed with myself that I didn't use this printer prior to upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion to Mountain Lion since part of me thinks that the printer could be incompatible with Mountain Lion, but then again, I'm not a Mac expert. I'm computer/tech savvy, so any other suggestions you think may help (however "technical" it may be) would be much appreciated!
The printer is compatible with Mountain Lion. If it wasn't, then it would not print at all.
The other thing to note is that you have the same issue with your Windows partition via Bootcamp. If Windows was still printing but Mtn Lion wasn't, then there would be cause to blame the new version of OS X. But from what I have read it appears to be a physical machine issue rather than the OS.

  • TS3147 After installing Mountain Lion, I tried to scan from my Canon MX870 and received the message: "MP Navigator EX quit unexpectedly. Click Reopen to open the application again. A report will be sent to Apple,"

After installing Mountain Lion, I tried to scan from my Canon MX870 and received the message: "MP Navigator EX quit unexpectedly. Click Reopen to open the application again. A report will be sent to Apple,"  This problem happened right after I installed Mountain Lion. I then downloaded Canon's upgraded software and drivers for the MX 870 and the problem was resolved. Now one month later, the problem has returned.

Solved problem with original Canon software.  When I downloaded Canon software upgraded for OS X 10.8, I got all by Navigator Ex. Noticed that on Canon's site, the upgraded version is 3.1; my app was 2.1. Upgraded to 3.1 for Nav. Ex, and it works.
You should still use Image Capture IMHO.  If it was my gear, that's what I would do.  No need to worry about software upgrades.

  • Can't install the software for the Canon MX870 series because it is not currently available from the Software Update server.

I'm trying to setup my Canon MX870 USB ink jet printer plugged into my Airport Extreme's USB port.  However, I keep getting a message of; "Can't install the software for the Canon MX870 series because it is not currently available from the Software Update server."  And then I have to click cancel.
    The "Print & Scan" from System Preferences, can see the printer as it has the NAME: Canon MX870 series,  and the LOCATION: 'the name of my network',  and USE: MX870 series.  But after clicking "Add", it tries to install the software (I've already installed the latest drivers however on my Mac Pro) and that's when I get this message;
"Can't install the software for the Canon MX870 series because it is not currently available from the Software Update server."
Any ideas, help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hello Marty,
It sounds like you are not able to add your Canon printer in System Preferences.  I found an article with steps you can take to resolve this:
    Resolution
USB printers and Bonjour-enabled network printers
Follow these steps until the issue is addressed:
Make sure that the printer is powered on, has ink / toner, and that there are no alerts on the printer’s control panel. Note: If you cannot clear an alert on the printer's control panel, stop here and check the printer's documentation or contact the manufacturer for support.
Ensure the printer is properly connected to a USB port on the Mac or AirPort base station / Time Capsule. If the printer is a network-capable printer, make sure that it is properly connected to your home network.
Use Software Update to find and install the latest available updates. If an update is installed, see if the issue persists.
Open the Print & Scan pane or Print & Fax (Snow Leopard) pane in System Preferences.
Delete the affected printer, then add the printer again.
If the issue persists, try these additional steps:
Reset the printing system, then add the printer again.
If the issue still persists, reset the printing system again.  Download and install your printer's drivers. Then, add the printer again.
Contact the printer vendor or visit their website for further assistance.

You need to contact the developer/manufacturer directly to determine if their product is compatible w/Yosemite.  It is not listed on their system requirement website:
    Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks
Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion
    Mac OS X 10.7 Lion
