Problems installing on Macbook pro
So I have been running Arch for the past few months. I decided to update my laptop and went with the Macbook pro for various reasons. So I have been working at getting Arch installed and have run into a couple issues. So this is what I did:
First I shrunk my main partition
Second I booted up Arch install and partitioned a home partition and a root partition. I set the root partition to fat 32 and the home to ext4
Third I mount everything and then I select the US mirror
Fourth I run pacstrap /mnt base and I get the following error
warning failed to retrieve some files
error failed to commit transaction
errors occured no packages were upgraded
ERROR: failed to install packages to new root
Any ideas on what I may be doing wrong or how to fix this issue?
Blankwall, I'm not sure how much this will help but I recently installed Arch on a Macbook pro 7,1. I think the Arch resources are fantastic but as a complete beginner from the installation point of view (I use Centos every day at work) I found all the information a little overwhelming, but really liked the philosophy behind Arch. I had one failed installation and then found this guide (https://vec.io/posts/use-arch-linux-and … na-display) which enabled me to get up and running. Not everything worked (internet, keyboard and I used the nouveau video drivers in the end) but at least I had a working system and this is all part of the learning process.
I've since read that the extra HFS+ partition (sda4 on my Mac) isn't needed and you can bless Grub in the mac EFI partition (which is seen as sda1 from Linux on my system) so it's worth having a read of the documents linked below. I have had a problem updating the grub.cfg file since then but that's another issue (see https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=167742).
These are the other links:
Wiki on Arch on Macbooks
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/MacBook
This one on Grub - look for the EFI section
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GR … _systems_2
And then this specific examples on setting up Grub on macs

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list. Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

I am experiencing some major problems with my MacBook Pro. I have had some issues with it turning on/off at random times, but today, when starting, I get the grey start-up screen and a recovery bar. After filling in approx 1/4 of the way, the machine dies. After starting it in recovery mode, it will not allow me to download OS X Mavericks- it says the disk is locked. Any ideas? I do not have a back-up and do not want to erase everything before I have explored my options. Help?
try forcing internet recover, hold 3 keys - command, option, r - you should see a spinning globe
most people will tell you to do both pram and smc resets (google) and if you still have issues, either clean install (easy) or troubleshoot (hard) -

is Mac OS X 10.6.8 what you currently have installed on your MacBook Pro? Do you still have your two grey installation DVDs which originally came in the box with your MacBook Pro? -
Long start up time after Leopard install on MacBook Pro...
Hi, I just bought a MacBook Pro recently and upgraded it to Leopard
But ever since then, every time I start it up it takes over a minute to load everything
On Tiger, it would only take at most 20 seconds
It would just stay on some blue screen for a while, about 30 or 45 seconds before completely starting up.
Any suggestions on how to fix this? I used a clean install of LeopardHi, I'm having the same problem. My MacBook Pro is new and came with the Leopard 10.5. It's taking 2 min to reestart. I've already tried to reinstall the system with "erase and install", but it did not help. Even the first time after reinstalling the restart is already slow.
Have anybody heard anything about how to fix it?
Thanks a lot.

How do I download and install on MacBook Pro. Installed once on my PC desktop but now have new Macbook Pro with no disc drives.
What version are you talking about and have you got the serial number?
If you want to install version 11 then you can download from Adobe website and use your serial number to activate it. The only problem I can see is that your serial number might be for a windows system and I don't know if it would work on a Mac. However, it is worth a try.
You are allowed 2 installations simultaneously so you should be OK in this respect.
The download link is here:
http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cfm?product=photoshop_elements&loc=us
Make sure you use the MAC to download it so that you get the correct version for it. -
I am having problems with my macbook pro and the dock. About every fourth time I start the computer, the dock flashes on and off, then goes completely off and all I get is the spinning ball with brief moments of the cursor. But the computer locks up.
Do you have Parallels installed by any chance? There is a known problem that causes symptoms similar to this. You do not need to actually be running Parallels at the time and nothing in ActivityMonitor would point to Parallels. An update corrects the problem:

SSD Install Experiences MacBook Pro 2011 i7
This is a report on the beastie that I installed in my MacBook Pro 2011:
http://thranblog.info/post/8615912997/ssd-install-experiences-macbook-pro-2011-i 7The fan normally runs at about 2000rpms - if they're loud enough to actually hear, you might have a problem. Mine can rev up to about 4000rpms sometimes and I'll hear them then, but it's nothing consistent.
To see how fast your fans are running, download the free iStat Pro widget. If they're running abnormally fast, you could try a SMC reset to see if that will help.
I would also uninstall VirusBarrier - your really don't need av software on a Mac but if you feel as if you must have something, try the free ClamXav and/or Sophos for Mac (both recommended by our resident malware/virus guru, Thomas Reed).
Good luck,

HUB5 connection problems with my macbook pro
I've recently changed to BT Infinity and ever since the new Hub5 was installed my Macbook Pro has had connection problems. Every time I open the laptop I have to reselect the Hub5 network (which I never had to do before) and when I enter the key I'm told it is incorrect, which it is not.
The only way I can get round this is my pressing the reset button on the hub, which is obvioulsy not acceptable.
I understand from my internet searching that this is a known problem, but I haven't been able to find an answer that makes sense to me.
Any suggestions?Does this work? http://192.168.1.254/index.cgi?active_page=9135
