Problems installing OS 9.2.2 onto a clean iMac G3 (slot loading)

The iMac in question is completely clean yet for some reason will not boot from my retail Apple OS 9 disc. It boots just fine from my OS 10.1.5 disc, but will not start the OS installer when I use the OS 9 one.
I need to update the computer's firmware so I can upgrade to more recent versions of OS X, but if I cannot get OS 9 on there first, I don't know what I can do.
When the machine boots up I insert the OS 9 disc and hold down C. It will eject the disc, but if I push the disc back in once it fully ejects, it'll start searching for a start up disk before finding the disc. Then the screen will go gray and the CD will eject again. This time, still holding down C, I reinsert the disc and a floppy disc icon with a question mark flashes on the screen.
What can I do?

Actually, even the last iMac G3 only came with 9.1, so that disk may be for an early iMac G4.
Is the iMac able to boot other optical disks (like the one for Mac OS X installation)? If so, the drive is OK, so it is probably the disk being for a significantly different and later Mac model. The 9.2.2 disks in particular seem to be very model-specific.
Ideally, you should get a retail disk that is 9.0.4 or later. It should be white with a big orange 9 on it, and it should NOT say "upgrade" on it. The only retail disk your iMac may not be able to use is the original 9.0 disk (sold when Mac OS 9 was first released). You can get it up to 9.2.2 from any version of Mac OS 9 with free downloadable updaters

    That's what we needed.
Officially your iMac--known as a "tray-loader" for its optical drive type--can go to Panther (10.3.X). Panther is quite better than Jaguar (10.2.8) that you now have. You probably need more RAM than 160MB for even Jaguar. I feel that 384MB is about min for that OS.
The big problem is that the early iMacs came with painfully small hard drives --4 to 6 G--and OSX need a lot of free space on the disk for efficient performance. It's hard to keep a Jaguar system under 2G with a few useful apps installed.
Bottom line: you'll spent money for a hard-to-find retail OS install disk, more RAM, and a bigger hard drive, and you'll still have a slow computer that will always struggle with modern web pages. If you want to upgrade and experiment as a hobby or learnign experience and you can afford the parts and time, by all means--go for it. However, if cost is an issue, throwing money at this unit is not cost-effective in terms of how much more yo ucan get from it.

  • Can't install OS 8.6 on iMac DV Slot Loading - firmware?

I have an iMac "DV" (400) Slot Loading (http://support.apple.com/specs/imac/iMacSlotLoading.html) that I am trying to install the original system on (8.6, if I'm not mistaken). It has 128 mbs of RAM, a 10 gb HD, and currently no system installed on the hard drive. I have updated the firmware to 4.1.9.
The problem is that the iMac won't boot from the install CD for me to do the installation. The iMac used to have OS 9 installed on it, and when I tried to run the installer with the computer booted from 9, it told me it couldn't run on this machine. I believe I have the correct installation CD. I have also tried a couple of other installation CDs, and neither 8.5 or 8.6 will boot this computer.
Is there a way I can get 8.6 installed on this machine with the 8.6 CD, or is it just not possible for me to install 8.6 any more?
Could the firmware update be preventing me from booting from 8.6?
    Thanks,
    Jon
iMac "DV" (400) Slot Loading   Mac OS 8.6 or Earlier

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25517 shows that later releases of the same iMac came with 9.0 through 9.0.4. Those that did can't use an 8.6 install disk.
You can sometimes plug in the serial number of the Mac in the http://www.apple.com/support/ search engine at the bottom right hand corner of the page where it says to do so, to get an idea of how old the Mac is.
Knowing that date, will tell you the likely operating system to have been installed. Since 9.0 was released in October 1999, a date after October 1999, would indicate the Mac can't boot 8.6.

  • Safari problems on iMac G3 slot-loading CRT

I'm posting here because I haven't been able to get a satisfactory solution to the problem on the Safari discussion board. Here goes.
I recently upgraded my son's iMac DV (A G3 processor) to OS X 10.3.9. Was having trouble launching Safari 1.3. It would start to launch and then quit. Here's the chain of events of fixes I've tried:
    1) Machine -- iMac DV (G3) w/ slot loading drive -- was running OS 9.2.2 I tried to upgrade it to 10.3 with Panther discs. It told me I needed a firmware update, which I installed, then upgraded from the disc. Firmnware is now listed at 4.1.9f1 (Anybody know if this is as it should be?)
    2) I then upgraded further with a 10.3.9 Combo download, which installed Safari 1.3. However, when I double-click the Safari icon, it won't open. Nor will it allow me to upgrade to 1.3.1 or 1.3.2.
    3) I then downloaded Safari 1.2 again and re-installed that. That seemed to work and at least allowed me to get on the Web. But now, I'm back at version 1.2.
    4) I tried repairing permissions. No go.
    5) In desparation, I performed an Erase and Install of the system software from the Panther discs and got it back to 10.3.9 via the combo download. It then allowed me to update Safari to 1.3.1 and then 1.3.2, but it still won't launch.
I did the same thing to my daughter's iMac G3 and it all went fine. Only difference was, I was upgrading her from OS 10.2.8 and when I did, it did not ask me for a firmware update.
    Any suggestions anyone?

    Jamie,
Not being sure of what was suggested in the Safari forums....a few questions.....
    * When you were able to get Safari to 1.3.1 did this open ok and just not 1.3.2?
    * Not sure if it will help much but did you try trashing the Safari .plist file after downloading 1.3.2 (found @ ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist) to see if that would help?
    * Have you checked out Dr. Smoke's X-Lab FAQ for Multiple applications quit unexpectedly or fail to launch?
Personally, I doubt the firmware update (and yes that is the correct version you are showing) is to blame for the Safari failure but someone else may see it differently.

  • Problem installing CS6 D&W Premium onto 2nd machine (HELP!)

A while back, I purchased the CS6 Design and Web Premium package from Best Buy and installed it onto my Mac (via a physical disc).  I am under the impression that I should be able to install it onto a 2nd machine also, but my Surface Pro 2 (the machine of choice) has no CD drive, and the serial number I registered the first time around is being declined (after trying an internet download/installation).  What am I doing wrong?  Should I have received 2 serial numbers with the product?
    Thanks for helping!

    http://prodesigntools.com/how-to-buy-multiple-user-or-computer-licenses-adobe-cs5.html
"It’s called the Adobe Business Store (formerly known as the Volume Licensing Program) – but it’s not just for businesses, it’s for any person or enterprise that needs to run Adobe applications with multiple seats, and it has some pretty great advantages:
You can purchase however many licenses you need online with a credit card or PayPal, immediately without any paperwork or signature contracts to deal with.
You receive a single serial number for your entire group that you can freely switch between your computers, including between PC/Windows and Apple/Mac.
The actual software is completely the same as the standard versions, and you can add additional users at any time while keeping the same single serial key."
According to this source and some others, Creative Cloud was spawned out of this (it is referenced in the article).
But either way, it doesn't matter.  I'm not blaming Adobe or anyone else for this, but it's incredibly painful to have spent that much money on an anniversary present for my wife and I, as it has been our plan for a while now to learn this software together (The Continuing Education course where we live requires you to have the software/hardware before attending the course), only to realize down the road the person who sold me the software was misinformed about it being "multi-platform" and perfect for what I was looking for.
I'm not trying to swindle anyone or take anything out of turn.  I'm not trying to be a jerk, or an unruly customer.  I'm just at a huge loss and have no other route to take, other than to ask the staff of a big-company forum if they could help me fix this in any way at all...  :-/

  • I cannot install Virtual PC 7.0 onto PowerPC G5 iMac using OS 10.4.6

    Hi,
I probably should try asking someone at Microsoft this question, but then I woud have to pay them, and I already did when I bought VPC 7. I had VPC 7.0 installed on a computer using OS 10.3.x and it worked fine. I got a new computer and am now unable to install VPC. I know there is an update, 7.0.2 and I have it but I understand it should have nothing to do with installation.
When I try to install 7.0 the process goes through Part 1 no problem, I get the message that the installation was sucessful, I restart and am then prompted to unlock it by typing in my name and the Virtual PC product key. I do that and then there is no further movement. The continue button never lights up, the only options I have are to "Go Back" or exit the program.
I got some advice on a different forum to try loading OS 10.3 and then installing VPC onto that followed by the update. I never heard of going backwards with the OS and frankly I am afraid to even try that.
So did Microsoft make a cool $250 off of me or what. There must be some way to do something about this. Thanx
iMac G5 Power PC   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Virtual PC 7.0 with Windows XP Home Edition, and VPC 7.0.2 Update

    Hi Dr. Spock,
Perhaps a Vulcan Nerve Pinch will subdue that misbehaving iMac..just kidding. What about re-installing 10.4.2 and then try installing VCP before going through the upgrade path for Tiger? Maybe that will at least allow you to complete the install of VCP in order to update it properly.

  • Problem installing Windows 7 64-bit on late 2013 iMac 27"

Is Windows 7 64-bit compatible with this computer?
    Hardware and software:
    • Late 2013 iMac 27", 3.5 GHz I7, 16 GB memory, 1 TB hard drive (no fusion drive)
    • Mac OS 10.9.1
    • USB thumb drive
    • Boot Camp Assistant 5.1.0
    • Windows 7 64-bit install disk iso image downloaded from Microsoft
    Install steps:
    1. Use Boot Camp Assistant to install Windows 7 install (from iso image) and Apple Support Software (creates WININSTALL USB drive)
    2. Use Boot Camp Assistant to create 50 GB Windows partition on iMac internal drive and start Windows install
    3. Complete initial install steps until given option to select install partition
    4. Select 50 GB partition. Error message that partition is not formatted correctly. Use Advance Options to format (presumably to NTFS)
    5. Select 50 GB partition again and click "Next"
    6. Get error message "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. See the Setup log files for more information."
    7. Install quits at this point
I have successfully installed Win 7 on another computer (2010 Mac Pro) using these steps. I also tried installation on the iMac using an iso image created from my original Win 7 64-bit install disk, with the same installation error as above.
I'm wondering if Windows 7 and/or Boot Camp is compatible with this iMac. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I am awaiting delivery on the exact model you have and have been researching how much trouble it will be to put 64 bit windows 7 ultimate on my machine when it gets here. I'm not pleased at what I've been reading so far. I have not seen the two other posts but yours is enough to concern me.
Have you also seen that 10.9.1 update may be responsible for this? I've seen where 10.9 caused some problems with the bootcamp app but then the process was completely hosed with the 10.9.1 update. Are you seeing this as well?
Being a life-long mac dude, it pains me when their stuff just doesn't work because it usually just does. ****, that's why I started on a mac in the first place.
The support site says that they come with 90 days of complimentary support. Is this not an issue they should be responsible for addressing via support? Or is that just one long wait on hold waiting to talk to somebody that won't consider this a pure apple issue?
I was also curious if your install .iso contains both 32 and 64 bit versions?

  • Is it possible to install FCS 5.1 (Academic) onto an newer iMac with Lion?

So i have Final Cut Studio 5.1 (Academic).  When I tried to install on my New Imac, it would not allow me to do so.  I've heard that the installer is PPC, but the software itself is Universal.  Is this true?  And if so, can someone let me know how I can install it??  Would really appreciate the love!

    Niel,
Thanks, so if I format it all as APM I can either clone OSX 10.4.11 which I have on my internal now. If I do a backup of my intel and Powerbook PC both of those will already have Tiger on them so do I need to do another Tiger install on each of those partitions?
Also by doing it this way I can't boot from a parition onto my intel can I?
Guess I'll have to weigh whose system is more important or just back up her drive as GUID on my computer and she can restore from it if she has too but won't be able to boot from it.

  • How do i install my photoshop cs4 cd onto my new imac?

I bought a new imac for my photography and I can't seem to be able to install my photoshop cs4 cd on it. I need it asap for my job, if anyone could help that would be wonderful! I am a first time Mac user and I'm a little lost !

CS4 was written for the PPC processor. Your new Mac has an Intel processor and starting with 10.7 and then 10.8 Mountain Lion, Rosetta, which ran PPC apps in a PPC emulation environment, has been dropped. This means it won't run CS4.
Depending on your model, it might be possible to install Snow Leopard to a separate partition and run CS4 there.
Other than that, you can try running Snow Leopard in the following manner.

  • Installing mac os 10.2 Jaguar on my iMac G3 from 10.1 Puma

I got this old iMac G3 slot loading from a friend that has 64Mb of RAM. It had os 9 on it and I installed mac os 10.1 Puma on it and it installed fine. Then I popped in the mac os 10.2 Jaguar in and restarted the mac and installer opened and started to install mac os 10.2 Jaguar but it was installing very slow. It tool forever for the language selector to select and continue then after that the introduction to the installer begin and is taking forever. The continue button is not available to click and the reading packages little symbol is spinning.

    Chrisapoo23, welcome to Apple Discussions.
You have several problems. You state the Mac has 64MB RAM. Jaguar requires a minimum of 128MB RAM. The iMac requires a firmware update before installing OS X. You need to check if your Mac requires a firmware (Boot ROM version in System Profiler) update. Mac OS X: Available firmware updates
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117 If an update is required, the update must be installed (using OS 9) BEFORE you install OS X.
Also, what size hard drive is installed? You may not have sufficient space for all you are trying to install.
