Problems installing OSX on new HD... Help!

Hi
I have a Macbook Pro 13'' (mid 2010), it never gave me any trouble, a week ago or so my HD died, naturally my Apple Care is gone by now and a friend told me that Hard Drive replacement wasn't all that dificult if you knew what to do, so I got a new 1tb Western Digital HD and with some help from ifixit I succesfully replaced my drive.
I don't really need Mountain Lion so I thought I could simply install the original OS that came with my mac (OSX Snow Leopard). I thought I did the hole thing correctly, I got into Disk Utilities and checked that the partition type was "GUID Patition Table" formated the new Hard Drive as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" and then installed OSX, but after a couple of minutes it just says that the install failed and no reason why, just "click restart and try installing again".
I'm not a computer savy person I just follow instructions, you know? So now I don't know what to do and I really need this thing to work.
Thanks in advance, guys.

Hi!
Thank yoy guys! I did used the disc which shipped with my MBP. I don't really know how to do a NVRAM reset but I'll reasearch how, and let you know how it goes.
In case that doesn't work I'll return the HD and exchange it for a Hitachi, I guess, since I believe that's the one that my MBP originally had. **** it! I actally thougth the WD was a smart choice considering reliability and warranty.

  • Problems installing OSX Lion - new Mac Mini 2011

    Hi!
I'm having major problem with my brand new Mac Mini.
I wanted to upgrade it right away after reading so many succeful upgrading reports on various forums so I bought a 120GB Intel 320 SSD disk and 2x4 GB of Kingston 1333mhz ram. I swapped the drives right away and idiotically used to original drive in a case to create an external installation USB-drive (my 4GB USB drives didn't work).
I then created a bootable USB-disk with the external original drive and tried to install but only get the circle with slash after selecting the drive in the "options" menu. If I remove the USB-drive I get a flashing folder icon. If start holding down Command + S I get a message saying that the "version of OSX is not supported on this platform".
I also tried using the Recovery Assistant HD to create a bootable recovery tool but that gives the same results.
    In short:
I can't install OSX Lion on a brand new Mac Mini with upgraded HD and Ram. I don't have the original installation anymore.
    Am I out of luck?

Internet Recovery solved this problem. Option+Command+R.

Try to be more explicit about your problem. As descriptive as possible. You also need to tell us what your computer model is and what version of OS X you are now using.

  • Install OSX on new Hard Drive - need to create install disc or drive

So my old hard disk got wrecked and is in the trash can right now. I got a new one and I'm trying to install OSX from scratch on this new HD.
Problem is, my Macbook Pro (late 2011) came with Lion and no installation disk.
I have a laptop with windows, a 8GB USB drive and some blank dvd disks. Can I create an installation disk with those tools? I don't care if it's Lion or Mavericks.
I looked it over and couldn't find any direct way on doing this. Every page I found assumed I already had an installation disk or an image downloaded.
(I can even borrow a friend's mac if I for some reason it's not possible to do it via windows)

    Hi There,
All you need to do is download one of the full OS installers on your Mac from the Mac App Store.  You do not have to install it just download the installer.
Then use Diskmaker X (http://liondiskmaker.com) to make a bootable USB flash drive.

  • How to install OSX on new SSD?

I just purchased the 2012 i5 Mac Mini and replaced the 500GB hard drive with a new 128GB Samsung 840 Pro. Built many PCs in the past, but this is my first Mac.
What are my options for installing OSX on it? When I first boot up I am greeted with a folder with a question mark in it. I hope this is typical? Also, did the SSD need to be formatted first? I just opened it up and put it in. I thought I could just hit command+r to do an internet install, but I have had no luck getting that to work with my Windows keyboard.
If at all possible, I would prefer not to have to remove the drive again since it's so cumbersome.
I don't have an external optical drive.
I do have an external hard drive.
I do have a few 8GB and 16GB flash drives.
I have an ethernet cable for internet connection.
I probably could have done a little more research before doing this, but I would greatly appreciate any help.

Finally was able to get keyboard to start disk util/internet install. When I started internet install disk was nowhere to be found. I used a SATA to USB cable to boot from the 500GB drive and formatted the SSD. Then rebooted again, and currently finishing internet install. Hope it goes well.

  • Problem installing OSX 10.4 from Firewire DVD drive

Hi, I'd be very grateful if anyone can help... I've been trying to install OSX 10.4 from DVD loaded in an external Firewire Lacie DVD drive and haven't been successful yet. I have tried instructing startup from the DVD in System Preferences, holding Option on startup and selecting the DVD and also holding 't' on startup, which I was informed forced startup from an external Firewire device (this resulted in a large Firewire logo floating round the screen but after 10 minutes or so hadn't progressed into full startup). Having read some bits of info found on Apple support I can see there is some issue about installing OSX 10.4 from a DVD drive other than an internal Apple drive (although I can't see any explanation why). Could someone please let me know if there is another way of doing this? – I mainly want to get 10.4 installed because I want to get a new ipod which requires 10.4 rather than 10.3. Thanks very much, Sam

Some external DVD drives support startup. Some do not.
Holding down the T key at startup makes the Mac go into FireWire Target Disk Mode. It will not help you start up from the DVD drive.
If you have another Mac with FireWire and a DVD drive, you can use FireWire Target Disk Mode to mount your Mac's hard drive on the other Mac's desktop. Then, you can use that other Mac to startup from the DVD and run the installer, pointing to your Mac's hard drive for the installation.

I don't know of any other way, if the external DVD drive does not support start up.

  • Re-installing OSX on new iMac

we recently purchased a iMac, G5 w/ intel chip ....
we then fired a designer who has obviously lost the original disks that came with the machine. our delema is that we cannot install software, etc because we have no access to the password that was set up with him.
soooo ... we went to the apple store and purchased the 10.6 OSX Cd that they said would work on this machine.
when we insert the cd and try to install the OSX is says OSX 10.6 cannot be installed on this machine.
    please help ????

To be sure you are clear on the situation. You have an Intel Mac. The only installation discs that will work are those that came with the computer. What you need to do is call AppleCare and arrange to have a new set of discs sent to you or arrange with your local dealer to provide you with a set of software restore discs intended for your Intel Mac model.
There are two Intel iMac models. The original Intel models that have the Core Duo processor and the newest models that have the Core 2 Duo processor. The OS X Installer Discs are not the same for each model, so you need to be sure you get the discs that are specifically for your model. These discs will have gray labels and they are model specific.

It will look like its finishing but then it will say problem instaling software. Please try again. I have tried it 2 times already. PLEASE HELP!!!

Let me see if I have this straight.
You are simply trying to install Mac OS 9.2 from disc 2, correct?
What happens when you insert the disc?
Does it mount on the desktop?
    Do you receive any errors?
Are you able to double click the install classic icon?
b I am using a new imac and i tried to instal the software. It seemed to work with disk 1.
So you were trying to reinstall the system software from disc 1?
Was this an upgrade of the software or a reinstall of what came with your computer?

  • Installing OSX on new Raid setup

    HI Everyone,
i have four internal 250 Gb hard drives, i switched the startup dick to an external so I could set up the raid.
I set up a stripped raid consisting of two mirrored raids per the Apple database. it seems to work in as much as my four disks that showed up on my desktop previously show up as one with a capacity of 465 Gb.
so in theory, it looks like i have successfully made the RAID. Disk utility says it is online.
so, my question is, i tried to install OSX on the RAID and it says that it can not install OSX on this disk?
is there a trick I am missing?
I TRULY appreciate your help and comments

Are these drives all set up using the GUID partition map? Did you erase the drives before setting up the RAID? Are you trying install OS X using the OS X Installer Disc One that came with the computer? Have you tried cloning the system from your external drive?
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    5. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    8. Select the destination drive on the Desktop and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. At the bottom in the Ownership and Permissions section be sure the box labeled "Ignore Permissions on this Volume" is unchecked. Verify the settings for Ownership and Permissions as follows: Owner=system with read/write; Group=admin with read/write; Other with read-only. If they are not correct then reset them.
For added precaution you can boot into safe mode before doing the clone.

  • Problems installing CS5.5 ~ Really need help.. Thank you.

    Operating system = WinXP
Trying to install purchased CS5.5 Web Premium on completely clean machine recently reformatted.
Installing from files downloaded from Adobe.
I did a successful install of this last summer, but this time it's been a real pain.
I am completely lost on what is wrong and I have customers waiting for web page fixes.
    1. I bought the CS5.5 Web Premium upgrade last summer. I had 4.0 on my system at the time. No problem installing 5.5.
    2. Yesterday I wiped my hard drive clean and now need to reinstall CS5.5. I do not have CS4.0 on my machine now.
    3. I downloaded my CS5.5 files from Adobe today.
    4. The installation instructions said:
"Navigate to the directory containing the downloaded files.... Double-click the Set-up.exe file to begin the installation. In some cases, the Set-up.exe file may open
    automatically."
Today, that magic did NOT happen. Nor had it happened last summer.
So I tried to install the files anyhow.
    5. On my previous install I opened files individually when the magic didn't happen and it still went okay. But not today.
Today I started with WebPremium_DesignPremium_CS5_5_Content_ALL.exe file. Can someone tell me if opening that file first was a mistake? And if so, what file should I have opened first?
It opened but I can see nothing in my program files. So I tried the three other files with no success... Here are the error messages:
WebPremium_DesignPremium_CS5_5_Content_ALL.exe - - - Which I already opened. No files can be found on my computer, but they must be there.
WebPremium_CS5_5_LS1.exe - - - I get an error message that says it is not a valid Win32 application.
Illustrator_15_1_Content_LS1.exe - - - This acts like it will open and download fine. I did not do it pending why the other files aren't working.
WebPremium_CS5_5_LS1.7z - - - I try to open this and get an error message, "Windows cannot open the file..." and it wants to find it on the Internet.
This worked fine last summer. Can someone help me? Do I need to reformat my whole computer again?
You don't know how appreciated the answer would be. I would be most grateful. Thanks!!!
    BLee

WebPremium_DesignPremium_CS5_5_Content_ALL.exe - - - Which I already opened. No files can be found on my computer, but they must be there.
Probably not. That really is just the additional content and without a qualifying product install it won't do anything most likely since the directories it expects do not yet exist.
WebPremium_CS5_5_LS1.exe - - - I get an error message that says it is not a valid Win32 application.
Could be damaged, could be blocked. Anything from virus scanners to flakey drives. Could also be missing a critical system library. No way to tell from afar.
WebPremium_CS5_5_LS1.7z - - - I try to open this and get an error message, "Windows cannot open the file..." and it wants to find it on the Internet.

  • Problems installing windows on new retina macbook pro

Hi i am having problems installing windows on the latest retina macbook pro, I end up getting an error , cant install windows on this GPT partition style. I have tried booting into windows , and EFI, but it all ends up with the same error. Please HELP.

Did you use Boot Camp Assistant to partition the drive? If you want both Windows and Mac OS X on your Mac that is what you have to do.
If you only want Windows then you can install it by itself but you have to delete all partitions on the drive and format it NTSF from inside the Windows installer or a third party Disk Management/Partitioning/Formatting program.

  • Problems installing OSX

Hi there! I have a 13" macbook. My hard drive failed so I got a new one, and went to install OSX on it. It's an Apple OSX Install Disc, 1 & 2, and it takes me to the installer, asks me to select language then tells me "This software cannot be installed on this computer." Restart or Startup Disk.
Why is it doing this? Please advise... I miss my MacBook!
    Thanks in advance!
    Sarah

    Hi smross,
I'm not quite familiar with what an Apple OEM MacBook Install Disc is, there are typically three kinds of discs:
1.) The System Restore disc that came with your computer
2.) The OS X Retail disc that's sold in stores
3.) The replacement discs produced by Apple that serve the same function as option #1
Typically if you get a message about incompatibility with a disc it's because the disc you're using is older than what came on the machine. For example, I can't use a Leopard retail disc on my MacBook Pro because it's 10.5.4 as the version and my machine came with 10.5.7 pre-installed.
Where did you get these discs?

Are you updating from the App Store when you get that error message?
If so, thry using the 10.9.2 Combo update -> http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1726.

  • Macbook won't startup, problems installing OSX with Firewire

    Hi,
I have a Macbook that has been unable to startup correctly for several months, and finally got around to taking a look at it. It usually stays at either the blue/grey loading screens, but occasionally it will make it to the login window, where it will then just stop functioning.
I was able to use a Firewire cable hooked up to my iMac, and when i turned on target disk mode, I was able to browse around some of the folders on my Macbook. Eventually, I will try to get into a folder, only for the connection to be timed out.
I don't care about the files on the Macbook (I've long forgotten them, and have done fine without whatever they were), so I tried popping in the OSX install CD into my iMac so I can install OSX on my Macbook via Firewire. I can't use the Macbook drive, because it has somehow become sunken into the case, and the slot for the drive is not lined up with the slot on the case.
I load up the OSX install CD application, hit the button to restart my iMac, and.... nothing. It just retarts itself every 15 seconds. If I pull out the Firewire cable, it still happens. I can't even get to gray Apple startup screen unless I take the install CD out.
Anyone got any ideas? I'm pretty poor right now, and would like to get this laptop running so i can give it to my sister.

If you want to use the iMac's DVD drive to reinstall OS X, this is the way to go:
Insert the install disc into the machine while it is running, then *shut down* the iMac.
Connect both computers using the Firewire cable.
Power on the iMac with the T key held down.
Power on the MacBook with the Option key held down.
You should see the iMac's hard drive & the OS X install disc as boot options. Choose the install disc.
From there, you can give reinstalling OS X another try.
