Problems installing Panther on G3 ibook

I recently bought panther off ebay to install on my 3 year old ibook G3 [700mhz, 640 RAM, 30g HD]. I am currently running 10.2.8 without problems.
During the installation process I got the message 'An error has occured during installation' 'Please try to reinstall' I've tried to install, in various ways, 5-7 times at this point with no luck.
I've tried upgrading, I've tried erasing the HD and installing, I've tried only installing/upgrading the necessary componets to run the system, all of which have ended in the same error message. The error occurs during the 'Preparing Base System Part 2' part of the installation process [somewhere around 4 minutes remaining].
I thought it was the discs I purchased, but I was able to install Panther on my external and boot the computer from there, so it seems the discs are good.
In my latest attempt I erased my HD and reinstalled 10.2 from my original disks, upgraded to the most current versions of everything through Software Update and tried the upgrade ... still getting the same error ...
Any suggestions of what might help?

Hi Again SloMocean!
Unfortunately, those CDs will not work on your iBook.
They are CDs that were designated to be shipped with a specific iBook model.
Although you have an iBook, it may not be exactly the same as the model that those CDs were intended for.
More info here Tip: Mac OS X Install CDs/Use On Multiple Macs.
You need a Full Retail Version of the Panther Install CDs, which can be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, etc.
They are no longer available directly from the "Apple Store", as "Tiger 10.4.x" is the most up to date OS.
You may find one on this eBay Search Results Page, but CAVEAT EMPTOR, as you have discovered!
If you do an expanded search on eBay, or Amazon, you will probably find more.
Once again, make sure the CDs that you purchase, look like THESE.
Once 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update.
Shop Carefully, Read All Documentation, and Good Luck!

  • Installing Panther on G4 iBook which came with Tiger

Anyone help? I want to install Panther on G4 iBook which came with Tiger installed. I've used my iMac Panther disks to install, but although the iBook goes all through the installation process, it won't start up from Panther.

    Lyssa
Thanks for your reply. I suspected this might be the case but still hope there might be a way round it.
I want Panther on the iBook first because I prefer it to Tiger. Tiger has some annoying little features - for example, the fact that if you select a whole load of files and Get Info on them you get a separate window for each file - if you want to hide the extensions you have to tick the box in each separate window. In Panther you get a single window applying to all the files - neat! There are various other silly little things like this.
Second, the versions of Mail in Panther and Tiger are incompatible. If I save an email on the iBook (while away from home, for example) and want to transfer it to one of the mailboxes on my (Panther) iMac, I have to go through the following laborious process:
    1. Save the email on the iBook in Raw Message format. Copy it to the iMac (via a mobile hard drive).
    2. Create a temporary mailbox folder in Mail on the iMac. Close Mail.
    3. Go to Users ... Library/Mail/Mailboxes. Change the extension of the temporary folder from mbox to txt.
    4. Open it (it now opens as an ordinary folder).
    5. Copy the text of the email into the document called mbox.
    6. Close the folder, change its extension back to mbox.
    7. Open Mail again, move the email from the temporary folder into the folder where it belongs.
    8. Delete the temporary folder.
    Ridiculous or what?

  • Is it possible to install Panther directly onto ibook w/ OS9

Is it possible to install Panther directly onto a clamshell ibook with OS9, or do I have to install the various versions of X prior?
    PM

    Hi Paul,
if your iBook meets the 10.4 System Requirements (e.g. Built-In Firewire, 256 MB RAM,...) then you can directly install 10.4 without going through all the previous versions. However, be aware that you cannot use the install disk that came with your MacBook Pro!!! These are hardware specific and also specific to the Intel-CPU.

I have zapped the PRAM and reset-all/reset-nvram/set-defaults in the open firmware screen, and still get the same error when trying to boot the Panther CD for install, I'm all out of ideas and badly need panther installed for some programs. The one thing I have not tried is updating the firmware but I'm not sure if I have the most recent or not.

There is no firmware update required for your iBook model. It is possible there is a hardware problem - bad RAM for example or a logic board problem.
Are you starting up the installer from the Installer icon on the CD or are you using the "C" key to boot from the disc? If you are doing the former, then try the latter. Also disconnect all peripherals (if any), be sure the battery is installed, and you are running off the AC Adapter.
If you still have no success (truly strange) you can connect the iBook to one of your other computers via Firewire and install using Target Disk Mode or if you have Panther installed on another computer simply clone it over TDM.

  • Installing Panther on my ibook

i have an old ibook g3 and it is running 10..2, which does not support airport extreme WPA passwords. so our network runs on just that, so i need 10.3 to b able to get on the network.
i have resource install discs that came with my fathers laptop, which is an ibook g4. some people have said that the discs are made only for one specific system, but wen i used to have a clamshell, i was able to get os x 10.2 on it easily with my friends discs.
so im really confused and have no idea what to do or if im gonna need to get real OS disks.

    Welcome To Discussions Grimm 665!
    Here is some additional information.
Once a purchased version of OS X has been installed, the point upgrades, such as 10.1.x to 10.1.5 (Final) 10.2.x to 10.2.8 (Final), 10.3.x to 10.3.9 (Final), and 10.4.x to 10.4.9 (Pending), can be downloaded for free.
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
Panther, is no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Tiger 10.4.x is the most up to date OS.
If you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can also be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, AppleRescue, FastMac, etc.
As Gulliver posted, be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Panther is only on CDs, not DVDs.
Unless purchased from AppleRescue, the discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade on them.

  • Problems installing Panther

    Hi,
    Here's my problem...
    I bought an iMac G4 (700MHz, 256MB, 40GBHD) that came with Tiger 10.4,
It was running well enough, but Tiger was being buggy, wouldn't update, and i got locked out of a user without a password... .
So, i decided that i'll just reinstall OS X, But OS X didn't install, so i erased the HD. After that, it wouldn't accept OS X.
When it didn't work i tried to install Ubuntu, but there wasn't enough Memory.
Then i tryed to installed Xubuntu, it partitioned the HD ect.. Then wouldn't install either. Only LiveCD...
I'm thinking it might of done something to the mac?
I also attempeted to install OS9 but, it was stuck at the icon with the folder mac icon...
Anyways now if i try to use my Panther discs to install i get a
    " panic(cup 0): Unable to find driver for this platform: "PowerMac4,2". "
    and a
" panic: We are hanging here. . ."
Is there anyway to Install Mac OS back onto my G4?
it would be great to get this working again.
    Thanks.

What OSX disks did you use to try this install attempt and what option did you use to try the install, Archive and Install or Erase & Install?
    @ Littetshoulders:
I used Panther Discs, and i Erased and Installed,
when that didn't work, i booted up into the install, reformatted the HD in Disc Utility, and then it wouldn't accept the discs anymore.
Sorry, I don't know anything about Ubuntu or Xubuntu installations so I'm not much help in that department but that certainly could have some bearing though if the reinstall of OSX didn't work in the first place it sounds as if the problem was already evident before that attempt.
Yea, but it does sound kinda weird that Linux wouldn't instill eather..
Most likely wouldn't install from your OS9 disks if there was some major disk damage at this point (just a guess on my part).
well it wouldn't boot so i'm guessing it's just an OSX only model =\
Was there any error given when you attempt to boot to the 10.3 install disk? Will it just not startup to the disk? What exactly do you mean that it crashes when you boot to the install disk?
    Heres What will happen:
    - I will startup the Mac with the 1st Install Disc
    - It will show the apple logo
    - It will then immediately crash

    @ cornelius:
i just wanted you guys to know that i'm not new, and i can understand how to do these things, i didn't mean it the way you thought.
That suggests a hardware problem. You might want to boot from your Apple Hardware Test disk and run the extended tests in a loop (hold down Ctrl + L during the tests.) If you are not able to boot from the AHT disk, please post back and let us know.
    Okay will do
    @ Littetshoulders ..again:
And as an aside to Alexandar, I too hope you don't feel our questions or responses are in anyway condescending to your knowledge et al. That certainly is not our intention. Your problem seems quite complex and needs everyone to keep on the same page sort of speak....hence our questions. My apologies also if that is how you interpreted any of our responses.
    lol i don't and i understand,
i guess i should of thought about what i was going to post a little harder :S
Edit: I couldn't find the disc, but i found a old AppleCare CD with OS 9.1 on it,
it's booting up, ill post back if it works

  • Having problems with Startup Disk Installing Panther

I'm having problems installing Panther, I currently have a 9.2 OS. I get a message that the startup disk could not select the new os as the start up disk. Has anyone had this problem before? I've done all my updates, firmware included. Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Julie

I bought the disc on ebay, its for an emac.
That disk isn't compatible with your computer; it will only work on a specific eMac model. You need a retail Mac OS X installation package, which is available here.

  • Installing Panther on iBook 500mhz

    Hi,
    Just a quick one...
I was just about to order some extra RAM (512mb)for this ibook G3 500mhz (only has 64mb at the moment) I got so I can run Panther, however, I thought before ordering it, I'd check if the Panther install CDs would work.. I was just curious..
So i popped it in the CD drive, clicked on Install OSX and the ibook restarted.. but it didn't start the Panther installation.. instead it booted normally into 10.0.3 (I even held down 'c' whilst restarting).
I kinda expected this as it does say 'at least 128mb of memory' on the PDF... am I right in thinking it won't even try to install Panther if theres only 64mb of RAM?
I didn't wanna shell out for the extra RAM and find out Panther wouldn't install anyway.. hehe.. method to my madness
    Any tips/opinions would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    ian

Were you started up from the Panther CD when this happened? In other words, did you start up from the CD instead of the hard drive prior to clicking on "Install"?
Panther has been successfully installed on an iBook 500 MHz. You need more RAM for it to happen. The main drawback is hard drive space. If you have the little dinky 10 GB hard drive, you could run into problems.
My husband has Panther installed on his, but he doesn't even have AppleWorks installed. He doesn't use iTunes or iPhoto. If you want to do anything besides internet surfing and e-mail, you may have problems.
It is generally recommended to keep 5 GB free in order to run OS X smoothly.
That's hard to do on an iBook with a (nominal) 10 GB hard drive that is, in actuality, only 9.31 GB.

  • Wanting to install Panther via iBook G4

Hi everyone. Thank you for taking the time to view my post.
    I have an iMac G3 500mhz 320mb 20gb CD-ROM computer running OS X 10.1.5.
I also have an iBook G4 running 10.3.9 with system disks supporting 10.3.3.
I would like to install Panther onto my iMac, but it has no DVD drive. I have tried for hours trying to do a network install via my LAN, but it appears that 10.1.5 didn't include network startup as a feature. (i don't see it anyways)
I know this is possible by way of FireWire, but I don't have a FireWire cable and I don't know which one to get or where to get it. Apple stores are few and far between in the middle of America and I don't have any opportunities to visit one any time soon.
My big question is if it is possible by way of iPod?
    I have a 4th gen 20gb iPod (monochromatic)
Is there a way I could use the iPod as a startup disk that would allow me to install Panther on the iMac?
    Thank you for any help.

Check e Bay or a computer store supply if your in a hurry. The price on a 6 pin to 6 pin firewire cable has dropped big time in the last year or so. If you decide to purchase an external enclosure which has both USB and firewire outputs on it you would be supplied with a cable as well. It's not a bad idea to have an external case for easy backup at a cheap price and it would work with either your lap top or iMac and you could use it to transfer data or files from one computer to another.

  • HT4059 Problems installing ibook update

I can longer access ibook on my ipad.  I went through the normal process of installing an update in App store, then clicked install and that app jammed. I cant even access ibook anymore. Need advice on how i can fix problem.

Here's what happened in safe boot mode.
I click on apple logo > software update > see's that Super Drive 3.0 is checked > click install
I wait for the install to go through.
First pop up says " There was a problem installing this update" Quit all apps before installing bla bla bla... I noticed a sound when this pop up appeared. It's the sound of when you restart the macbok. There is another popup behind this saying that software update has been sucessfully installed.
So what I did first was click "quit" on the popup saying "There was a problem installing this update".
then I clicked "ok" where it said that the software installation update was successfully installed.
I get another pop up which is the Software Update window. I let it look for any updates and it then says that my software is up to date. I noticed that Super Drive 3.0 is listed and cannot be checked [x]. There's a Check mark with a green circle around it.
I quit the software update window and click on apple logo > software update and let it do its thing. Next thing you know, It says that Super Drive 3.0 needs to be updated. I also checked the SERIAL ATA and still shows rev. CP06.
I just recently installed this mac os X so there is no "important" data on this laptop. I don't have any money for OS Lion or Mavrick nor meet the system req to run it. 2gb to 4gb is expensive for a ddr2 800 200 pin ram

  • Display problems when installing Panther

I purchased a G3 blue/white from work with 9.2.2 and the panther install disks (3 of them). The monitor was fine in 9.2.2. Upon inserting the panther disks, the display went grayscale and was next to unreadable. However, the install continued through disks one and two (never asked for 3?). Rebooting does not help, but I can tell it is running os x. Did the display drivers crash? I do not have the original 9.2.2 disks. Any advice?
I can tell you it has 192 ram and is a 300 mhz. I can't recall the size of the hard drive. However, when I opened the drive icon after installing panther, it listed about 40 mg as available.

For your machine to be upgraded from 9.2.2 to OS X, the firmware needs to be upgraded first. If you have not upgraded the firmware, I suggest that you go to Apple's firmware site and follow the instructions there to download and install the firmware.
I recently went through the process of updating the firmware on a iMac G3 and found the process to be a little tricky. This is what I learned:
After downloading the software, there was a folder called iMac Firmware Update on my desktop. That had 3 files in it, including an "About iMac Firmware Update". It is crucial to read that and to follow the directions. Rougly, you have to:
    - double click the iMac Firmware Updater
    - shut down the computer when prompted
-hold in the programmer's button (location shown in the instructions) with the tip of a pen and restart while holding the button
    - keep holding the button until a long tone is heard
    - after that, the update runs by itself and the computer will reboot. After it rebooted, I received a message that the update had been completed successfully.
The details might vary slightly for your machine, but I expect the general method is the same.
    I hope this helps.

  • Installing Panther On A Recent Computer

I know this is an odd question but I am wondering if it is possible to install Panther on a partition separate from my Leopard partition or even into Fusion on the same partition? My computer is an early 2008 MBP.
I have one piece of graphics software that does not work on 10.4, 5, or 6. I want to use it from time to time and I have the discs with 10.3 from my eMac which died a couple of years ago. I also have the install disc for 10.2 and for 10.1 (from an old iBook) any of which would be compatible with this software.
The software is the old Kai Power Tools plug ins for Photoshop and Painter.
If the earlier OS X is a problem can anyone suggest modern software equivalents of KPT ink dropper etc
    Tony

    Tony:
Are the PATA HDD easy to get?
Not at all. The iBook G3 has a limitation with regards to the size (capacity) of the HDD because the BootROM will only see 128 GB, but that is a lot more than 10 GB or whatever the original was. Here are a few I think would do fine for you:
    Seagate Momentus 5400.3 ST9120822A 120GB Hard Drive
    Fujitsu MHV2120AT 100GB Hard Drive
There are others, of course, but I couldn't get the long links to work. I recommend 100 or 120 GB. If you choose to go for something smaller here are a couple:
Seagate Momentus 5400.2 80GB Hard drive
    Hitachi HTS541060G9AT00 60GB Hard Drive
Look over these and post back with questions.
You will find step by step directions at iFixit. Here are few tips you may find helpful:
    • Print out the ifixit directions as well as the screw guide ahead of time.
    • Be sure you have the right tools. You don't want to damage the screw heads or you may never get them out. And the Torx screw driver is critical. For a spudge I use the handle of an old toothbrush (choose one made of hard plastic), cut off the brush and bevelled the handle end like a flat blade screw driver). For some spudge jobs a credit card will do the trick.
    • Picking up on one user’s suggestion, I clicked on the pages of each step which involved removing screws to enlarge, then printed out the pages. I poked holes in the paper where the screws were removed, poked the screws in the holes and stacked the pages in order in which there were removed. Reassembling was a lot easier. No cups to tip over and spill. No guessing. Each screw was exactly in the right place. You can use an ice cube tray, egg carton, dixie cups etc. I previously used small medicine cups one for the screws in each step. I nested them so that the last ones out and the first to go back in are on top. (Some users report cutting up the screw guide and placing the applicable section in each container.)
    • Be very careful pulling out leads. Hold the lead as close to the plug as possible and wiggle (the plug ) to loosen its grip. Don’t hold the wires and pull as that can damage the cable, or worse, in some instances pull the wires out of the plug. Indeed, some users have pulled the socket off the logic board! Use needle nose pliers or tweezers if you can access the plug, or nudge the plug with a small instrument to help loosen its grip.
    • Use force gently in removing parts. Separating upper and lower case takes some doing. Use a plastic tool (spudge) so as not to leave marks.
    • Refer to the screw guide when reassembling computer. Putting longer screws in the wrong place can perforate the circuit board.

  • Problem installing OS 10.3.2 on G3

I am having trouble installing Panther on my G-3 "Blue & White". It is now running OS 9.1. When I try to install, I get an error message. It says that Startup Disk is unable to choose the install CD as the boot disk. Can any one help me get around this problem?

    Hi marsupial2,
The machine will not boot up in OS X after the install from disk 1. <</div>
Are you still able to boot from your OS 9 hard drive and if so is the monitor working ok when booting from OS 9? Also, can you still boot from the OS X CD, without doing anything yet, just seeing if that disk can boot, and than quitting it?
I've tried booting up in OS 9 from the SCSI drive and repartitioning the ATA drive. I'm going to try the installation again. <</div>
Have you backed up your data on your drive? If you repartition the drive you will lose all your data on it.
Below is some info on reformatting and partitioning a drive for OS X, but before you do anything below, you may like to see if someone with more info chimes in. Since my install of OS X went very snoothly.
If you are ok with repartitioning that drive and deleting the data on the drive, it may be best to boot from the OS X disk and repartitioning with the OS X disk. That way you can format the drive in "Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) for the partitions you plan on putting OS X on, and for the OS 9 partitions, if you are putting any on that drive, Mac OS Extended (HFS+).
However, I don't know if anything needs to be done with that drive before trying to repartitioning it. You may have to do some kind of repair to it or update drivers or something. Hopefully some one here with more info about installs that don't go so smooth can offer more help with this.
It seems that many G3s seem to need to have OS X in the first partition, and the partition should be 8GB in size. <</div>
Yes, I've read this in a number of places. In my case I did not need to do this.
I found this link posted in a thread. It talks a bit about that.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106235
The thread I found it in was:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3293800&#3293800
Note in the thread above, that user had to make that first partition smaller than 8GB.
As far as repartitioning your drive and some install info goes, according to this book, I used when I installed OS X, "Mastering Mac OS X". Third Edition by Todd Stauffer and Kirk McElhearm. (Note: I do not get any money from the sale of this book and am not affiliated with them in anyway. It is a book that happened to be on sale when I was installing OS X so I got it.) Anyway, you may have already done some of this and know some of this, but the book makes the following points:
    * Backup anything important from your drive.
    * Like Texas Mac Man also posted, make sure you do the firmware update with in OS 9 if needed. I had to do that for my iMac. I was told that if I tried to install OS x or even tried to use an OS X CD without that, it could damage my iMac.
    * Check to see if your Mac is one of those Macs that need to have OS X installed on the first 8GBs partition of your HD. If it is you may need to repartition it.
    * If you're using a third-party video card you should check with it's maker to see if it supports OS X. You may need to get new drivers for it or you may need to use an Apple video card to use OS X. In my case I did not have to worry about this. If you have a third-party video card, someone else will have to help you with this. I have no idea how to find out which ones will work or where to get drivers.
    * If you install OS X on a already partitioned drive with OS 9 on it, update your OS 9 first. Like Frank Henyey posted above. Im my case I have OS 9 on a different partition but I had trouble downloading 9.2.2. I still have 9.1.x on my OS 9 partition.
    * Also, if you were installing it on a partition that had OS 9 on it that partition needs to have already been formatted in HFS+ format or you will have to reformat. In my case I was installing it on a new FW HD. So I used the OS X install CD to format the OS X partitions on my drive in Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) and the partitions I used for OS 9 in Mac OS Extended (HFS+).
NOTE: Mac OS X can be installed in both HFS+ and Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) formats. I think Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) is for a partition with just OS X on it. You can also install it on a partition with OS 9 if you are upgrading, as long as that partition is (HFS+). This makes it so you don't need to reformat that drive.
    * If you have an older Mac, one that can dual-boot, you may wont to have OS 9 on one HD and OS X on the other. You can also have different partitions like this. However; in that thread above they were saying that in some of those Macs that need to have OS X on the first 8GB partition, OS 9 also needs to be on it. But in your case you have two HDs so you maybe able to have OS 9 on one and OS X on the other if you can dual-boot. In my case I can dual-boot. It is nice to be able to boot in OS 9 if I need to.
    * You can use the OS X install CD to format and repartition your drive. You use Disk Utility to do so. For the OS X partitions I'd use Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) format and for any OS 9 partitions, Mac OS Extended (HFS+) format.
    * IMPORTANT: Before you partition it, make sure you have the, "Install OS 9 Disk Drivers" box checked for your partitions if you want to be able to see your other OS 9 drive or partitions when in OS X.
I hope this helps, and I hope your trouble with this is just a minor bump in the road to the install of OS X.

  • Can't install panther 10.3 on iMac G3

first of all, sorry for my bad english, and lack of capitals : i am using an old version of internet explorer version 5 i guess, which does not recognise the french characters, accents, capitals and the rest...
now my main problem : i am trying to install panther ( mac os10.3 ) on my imac 406 g3, running on mac os 9.2.2 with upgraded firmware.
when trying to run the first installation disk, the system replies :
    an error occured
startup disk was unable to select the install cd as the startup disk. ( -2)
i am also unable to start from the disk by pressing the c key, and also unable to select the disk in the through the " demarrage " in " tableau de bord " menu

From what I gather in your reply, I believe you're saying it is a 4 GB hard drive. Yes, OS X will run on your iMac, but you need a larger hard drive just to do that. OS X takes up gigabytes of space, requires even more gigabytes just to be able to run properly, and OS X applications take up much more disk space than anything before them.
Your iMac also shipped with 128 MB of RAM, but you'll need at least 512 MB to make it run with any sort of speed. If you can, get two 512 MB RAM modules for your system and have your Apple Authorized Service Provider install one (or both) of them for you. The module it came with is soldered in place, so you can't access it easily to replace it. You can put up to 1 GB of RAM in your machine (two 512 MB PC66 144 pin SO-DIMM modules).
At the same time, get yourself a good 60 to 80 GB hard drive (Seagate, IBM, Maxtor are all good brands, and make sure it has at least a 3 year warranty) and have your service provider install that for you at the same time as the RAM.
