Problems installing Photosmart A646 HELP!

I cannot get either my laptop or desk top to install the printer.  My laptop thinks it's a mass storage device.  I talked at length this evening to an HP tech.  Her conclusion was that the USB port was faulty on the printerm so I took it back and exchanged it.  The new one does the same thing.  Surely it can't be the printer.
I have an HP G60 laptop with windows vista home premium.
Can anyone help with this?

Hi lgeach; I may be able to help.  Actually, that's 'expected behavior' on the A636.  The printer driver  for the A636 is actually inside the device on a chip, and when you connect the cable it's will install from there.  The A636, right out of the box, acts like an external CD ROM when you first connect the USB cable.  What normally happens is that the CD's 'Autoplay' would run, and execute the installer that's on the printer.  That installer would copy the driver from the printer to your computer.  Once the install is complete, the A636 will then 'eject' the virtual CD and then start behaving like a regular printer after that.
it's It sounds like you have 'autoplay' turned off for CD's in your OS settings.  You can either enable the autoplay CD function in the Vista Operating System and then reconnect the USB cable after you've done that.  Here's information on how to change the autoplay settings in Vista:

  • Problem installing Photosmart C6180 All-In-One software

    I've "googled" and found several similar installation issues but none quite match mine.   When I attempt to install the All-In-One software, I receive a dialog box error "The system cannot find the file specified."   The file that it is attempting to find is found in the Dialog window heading:
    c:\users\Myusername\AppData\Local\Temp\7zS52C3\,sourcepath.setup\blocksys...
    Using %temp% I am able to verify that the 7zS52C3 folder structure exists.  However the ",sourcepath.setup" folder shown above is incorrect.  it should be just "setup".  
    I've ran this install several times under  different accounts, including creating a new admin account.
    I've cleared all temp files, removed tsr files using msconfig as described and cannot seem to solve this issue.  I even renamed the setup folder to ",sourcepath.setup" to see if this would solve the install but it failed on another file.
    I am running Windows Professional x64,  My HP Photosmart c6180 is connected to the network and I am able to print properly to it from my computer.  I need the software primarily for "scanning to computer" functionality.
    Any help is appreciated.

    I understand that when installing your HP Photosmart C6180 All-in-One Printer on your Windows 7 64 bit computer, you are encountering a 'c:\users\Myusername\AppData\Local\Temp\7zS52C3\,so​urcepath.setup\blocksysinstall.exe The system cannot find the file specified' error. I would like to assist you with this issue today.
    Now in your original post, I can see that you have already attempted installing the printer on administrator accounts, clearing the temp files, running an msconfig, and renaming the folder to no avail. At this time I would like you run the following steps to see if we can get this working for you.
    Step 1: Uninstall Drivers:
    First, I would like you to clean up your system of any software or drivers for your HP Photosmart that may have made their way onto your system during the failed installs. Rather than running the 'normal' uninstall process, I would like you to click here to download the Microsoft Uninstaller Tool.
    Once the website opens, please select the Run now button on the right hand side. Please follow through any recommended fix steps provided. When prompted, choose that you need assistance with 'uninstalling'. You will be brought to a list of populated programs from your computer. Scroll through this list until you see your HP Photosmart. Select your HP Photosmart and allow it to uninstall.
    This Microsoft Tool will also check your computer for any registry corruptions. Should any system corruptions be found, this Microsoft Tool will fix those corruptions for you.
    Once the uninstall has completed, please close the Microsoft Tool and proceed to the next step.
    Step 2: Clear the Temp Files:
    Click on your Start menu
    In the 'search programs and files' box type %temp% and hit enter
    In the Temp folder select Ctrl + A at the same time on your keyboard to highlight everything
    Select the 'delete' button on your keyboard. If you get a pop up to skip an item, just skip it.
    Once the Temp folder is emptied, close the window
    Right click on your Recycling Bin and select Empty Recycling Bin
    Step 3: Download Drivers:
    Please click here to download the latest drivers for your printer.
    Once the website opens select the Download button on the top left
    Allow the download to Run
    Once the download has completed the installer will automatically extract
    After the extraction if you get the error again for 'blocksysuserinstall.exe' take note of the temp folder 7z . . .  number sequence it refers to this time around.
    Step 4: Rename Temp 7z Installer package:
    Click on your Start menu
    In the 'search programs and files' box type %temp% and hit enter
    In the Temp folder locate the 7z . . . folder that shows in there
    Right click on the 7z folder and left click on 'rename'
    Rename the folder to the 7z. . . to the name that the 'blocksysuserinstall.exe' points to
    NOTE:  Ensure that you are logged into the same User Account that the error points to: "c:\users\Myusername\AppData . . . " when you make the change to the 7z folder. There shouldn't be any  'sourcepath.setup' folders at all.
    Step 5: Install Printer:
    Once the 7z folder is renamed to the name the error wants than click on the 7z folder to open it
    Scroll down to the bottom of the installer files
    Double click on the setup.exe file at the bottom. It may show an HP logo to the left of it
    An installer window should pop open
    Follow through the with the onscreen instructions to reinstall your printer

  • Problem installing Windows 7(HELP ME!)

    Hi to everyone!
    I have an iMac 3.06 GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo that I bought in the early 2009 and yesterday I wanted to install Windows 7 because I have to run some Windows programs...
    I have had a problem when I partitioned and online they said to me to format the HD so I formatted and partitioned the Hard Disk with Boot Camp and then I installed again Snow Leopard...
    Then I opened again Boot Camp and I put the DVD to install Windows 7(it's all genuine!) and the computer restarted to star the installation but when it restarts there is a problem:
    on the display there is a black screen with a little flashing hyphen at the left of the top of the screen...
    I thought that it was loading the installation but after 10 minutes it was at the same point...
    PLEASE,HELP ME!!!
    I wrote in the main italian forums about this problem but nobody knew how to help me
    I wanted to write to Apple but there isn't an email for this kind of problems...
    I have the AppleCare Protection Plan but I don't think that calling their number they can solve the problem...

    Your wording leaves me wondering if you followed the steps correctly and how the Boot Camp Assistant and PDF Guide (and there is FAQ) on how to partition and install.

    Most people run into trouble because their drive doesn't have enough contiguous free space; and that some files that are preventing partitioning.
    Installing can leave the free space fragmented as well.
    Apple Disk Utility RESTORE or SuperDuper are both a good way to create a bootable backup clone or image from which to restore your drive again (after an ERASE of the raw drive back to one partition).
    This is 7 32-bit? or 64-bit? Apple didn't use to support Vista x64 on any iMacs.

    I just purchased a new iPod and I attempted to install Quicktime 7 from the site and as the download completes, an error message pops up saying "Some installation files are corrupt. Please download a fresh copy and retry intstallation." I also tried installing the itunes and quicktime components using the iPod CD, but I also get an error message as the download completes telling me to get a fresh copy and start again. What should I do??? Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks

  • Problems installing Application Express  - Help Please

    I have the personal edition of oracle and i have a database instance set up in entreprise manager. Now I'm trying to install application express to the database via SQL Plus. I run into two problems
    1. It says in the document that you need to log into SQL as SYS rather than SYSMAN, when I do log in as SYS i get the error message saying that I need to choose either SYSDBA or SYSOPER so I do rather than normal but I need a username/password to log in and I don't know what Username/password they are referring to. I tried a couple of usernames and passwords already and have been unsuccessful.
    2. So instead of logging in as SYS, I logged into the SQL Plus as SYSMAN. I load the apexin.sql file onto the SQL Plus and I push on execute. The it asks me to enter the 5 things, so i enter "password, SYSAUX, SYSAUX, temp, /i/" and i get the error message "SP2-0916: Scheme not supported"
    I have tried several times already. I am working off a toshiba Satellite P200 and it is windows Vista. What am I do wrong please HELP!

    Hi there I'm still running into some trouble here
    When I am logged into my Enterprise Manager as SYS on my laptop
    I scroll to the bottom to open up iSQL plus and once I'm in, I get to the iSQL Plus Role Connection and there is 3 choices - 1) Normal 2) SYSOPER 3) SYSDBA
    I can log into normal with SYSMAN but when i choose SYS, it tells me that I must choose either SYSOPER or SYSDBA
    If I choose either of those, I get another login pop up saying that I need to log into the DBA system, but I don't know what username/password they are referring to. I tried logging into iSQL plus and tried executing sys/<sys password> as sysdba but it doesn't work. Please help!

  • Problems installing CS4, Adobe help not helping, can't find solution in forums

    When I try to install CS4 (on Windows Vista machine), I get the error "Uninstall Color Profiles Rollback Preventing the Installation".  Offered two solutions, I did both, but wouldn't allow me to cut/paste 10 files from the system32/spool/drivers/color folder.  I tried to go into the registry, it said, "some permissions could not be changed".  On the forums, it said some files could be linked to monitor or printers...I don't have a printer installed currently, but what am I supposed to do for a monitor?  I'm guessing they are not allowing me to move them because they are in use, but I don't know how to "unuse" them without not using the monitor.  I tried safe mode, didn't work...any suggestions?

    I had an older version of itunes installed on my computer with an older ipod i had. I then installed video ipod itunes and now this happens whenever i click 'itunes'

    Try installing an older version of iTunes first.
    To be quite honest I wouldn't got to iTunes 7 just yet anyway, there's a LOT of bugs. Stick with 6.0.5

    It would have been a great help to know precisely what Mac you have, so some of the following may not apply:
    You can check here:  http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/  to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS. Note that version 10,1,102,64 is the last version available to PPC Mac users*. The latest version,10.3.183.23 or later, is for Intel Macs only running Tiger or Leopard, as Adobe no longer support the PPC platform. Version 11.4.402.265 or later is for Snow Leopard onwards.

    FYI: "Br" is the Bridge application - try launching that to
    see if it fully installed.
