Problems installing tiger on old mini

I have a old G4 1.25 mini which I have upgraded the RAM from 250 to 1 GB (third party RAM) . Have tried to install tiger (disk from my imac G5) and been unsuccessful. I have done some research and found information that states if you have installed 3rd party RAM future upgrades of OS maybe unsuccessful.
I have read some other posts that have stated if you use "apple store" bought tiger or leopard it should install no problem. I haven't purchased anything yet as I dont want to waste my money.
Does anybody know if I will be able to install tiger or leopard if I buy it from the apple store? Please help because now i cant even get my hotmail account to work on 10.3.9!

The machine-specific OS X disks won't load on another system, as you've found out. You need the store/Apple bought version.
All RAM is 3rd party RAM, as Apple doesn't manufacture their own memory. They do use Crucial/Micron and Samsung, amongst others. What's important is the quality of the RAM ... sometimes el cheapo RAM, while meeting the Apple specs, may not work so well.

  • Problems installing Tiger on G3

I am having troubles installing OS X (10.4) on our G3 Desktop (Blue and White). The G3 has almost all original hardware, including built on firewire. Things added were a DVD Drive from a G4. It meets all the required specs for Tiger. It has all the latest updates and firmware upgrades. And the version I am trying to install is a generic OS X Tiger Installation Disk, for multiple computers.
When inserting the DVD on bootup, the display never comes out of powersave mode. If I start the system without the DVD in the drive, it boots into OS 9.2.2 just fine. Then if I insert the disc it pulls up the contents, I click on the installer and it says click Restart to begin the installation. Again it tries to boot but nothing ever shows up on the screen. I can hear the DVD drive spinning up about 30 seconds after restart, but nothing ever happens.
I've tried holding 'C', I've tried selecting it as a startup disk from within OS 9. I've even tried to install over the network, but everytime it tries to bootup the installation, the screen never gets a signal.
If you can please give me some suggestions I would really appreciate it!

Hello there...i have a problem installing tiger 10.4.6 ....cd boots ok and all; and it starts installing and all..... but at the very end it gives me this "there were errors please try to install again" (and of course i tried like 1000 times....actually 1001)the software is original and the computer meets the minimum requirements....now ...do i need to go ahead and install the very first os x and then this one? and how do i use the Diagnostic at boot up? (i'm new at Mac and don't know much) any help would be Highly appreciated...Best of Luck everybody!!!

  • How do I install Tiger on a Mini

I have a 2009 Mac Mini which came with Leopard, I have upgraded to Snow Leopard and am very unhappy with this OS. Can and if so how do I install Tiger?
I have tried inserting the Tiger install disc and everything freezes up!

Phooey! I was afraid of that.
I'm afraid my wife and I are getting old and set in our ways. The loss of the "Home" folder in he Dock, the new appearance of Safari and Google, and many of the "new" features expanded our learning curve beyond it's limits. My wife is legally blind and uses a 37" display with magnification and voice-over. Navigating a new screen has been very difficult. Besides, I can not find a feature in Leopard or Snow Leopard that makes a change worthwhile.
I may have to dig out her eMac!

  • Problems installing Tiger onto G3 Imac - please help!

    hi all.
i've tried to install tiger onto a g3 imac but i'm having some problems.
basically, once i've inserted the install dvd and restarted, the screen is either totally blank or it's very very dark and the desktop is sliding off to one side, plus the text and icons are blurred.
i checked that i didn't need to update the firmware first, and the computer said that i didn't need to.
does anyone have any idea what i can do? i don't have the original OS9 install disk any more and i'm starting to panic ...
    thanks in advance
    ibook g4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Jon,
Not to be silly but do you you have DVD capabilities? Not all G3s (mine included) have DVD drives. Is the firmware 4.1.9? What is your machines specs? Do you have enough ram, hard disk space?
I haven't read about these types of going ons, however on the Tiger OS X.4 discussion board Gulliver has an excellent check list/ decision tree.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607363
You may want to check that out as well as reposting your topic on the Tiger board.
Sorry I couldn't help more than possibly pointing you in the right direction.
    Good luck,
    Lee

  • Problems installing Tiger on 700mhz iMac

Hi - I think I have the answer, but wanted to double check with the forum experts!
I have a. I'm trying to install Tiger (that came with the next generation iMac), but when it starts up from the Tiger install disk (using external DVD drive), I get the "screen of death" (ie: black screen with giberish and a gray circle in the center).
I take it that my copy of Tiger is not retail and specific to my newer mac only? And that is why I'm getting this message?
Are there any copies to purchase for my older iMac? Thanks in advance for any help!
    Mike

    Hi jt202,
This forum is specifically for advice on the old G4 (Flat Panel) iMacs. Your problem seems to be related to using the iPhone. I suggest you repost in the iPhone forums.
EDIT: I see you already have.

  • Problems installing Tiger on the Beige G3

I have a rev A Beige G3 with a sonnet 500MHz G4 upgrade, a pioneer DVD RW drive and the original 6gb hard drive.
I am trying to install tiger, but I'm having problems. I can insert the disk and it will show up fine on the OS9.2 desktop, but when I launch XPostFacto 4.1, it says that the symbolic links to /etc, /tmp and /var and missing or damaged. But the DVD works fine in OSX 10.0 on the beige, and in 10.4 on a Sawtooth.
I would have tried using Jaguar to run XPostFacto, but I have too many problems with the monitor switching off during the installation, so I decided not to bother.
Does anyone know what I should do?
    Thanks
    Steve

i got tiger running almost 100% but not quite cause tiger refuses to work right with my pioneer dvr-110D. other than that tiger is running great. i had to do the video black out fix for 10.2.8 for tiger cause tiger would do the same thing.
sorry for not having a quick link to the fix cause im on my other Beige G3 AIO and i dont have it bookmarked.
what i did was get tiger 10.4 installed, then proformed the fix and rebooted and the onboard video didnt come on. this is where a second video card comes in handy ( wich i have a Radeon 7000 i use as main screen. then i installed the 10.4.7 update and rebooted and the onboard video started to work again and all has been well since with the video.
now the pioneer DVR-110D drive didnt work hardly at all in 10.4 or 10.4.7 it would not mount unless i booted with a disk in the drive. but still then even tho it was mounted it would not work or play dvd movies or audio cd's or burn disk's.
i updated to 10.4.8 and the drive will still not mount unless i boot with a disk in the drive. but when a disk is mounted it will play dvd movies and audio cd's but it still wont burn disk's ( some times it will burn half way but fail) and some times will stop working during dvd movie playback and audio cd playback.
now in OS 9.2.2 with the modded Pioneercdr authoring extention i can burn disk's with iTunes and the built in burn program. and will burn flawlessly with toast titanium. the drive also worked great in OS X 10.2.- 10.2.8 and have burn ability with patchburn installed
tiger on the other hand will not play nice with my drive. but other than that tiger run's great on my system. the spec's of my system are in my sig

  • Unable to install Tiger on a Mini

I bought a refurbished Mac Mini from Apple last week, and it came with OS X 10.3.7 installed. It also came with a 2 CD set that has Tiger on it. When I boot from the Tiger CD, I get an error that says that this software cannot be installed on this computer. Is it possible that Apple sent me the wrong Tiger CD?

That is what happened I bet.
    It happened to me also.
The install disc they sent me with the refurbished mini did NOT say "Tiger Install DVD" it said "Tiger Install CD" on it.
They shipped a new one and I now have Tiger.
If your disc says "CD" and NOT "DVD" that is most likley the problem.
    Hope this helps

  • Problems installing Tiger on G4 mirror

    Hi,
I wonder if anyone may be able to shed some light on this:
I recently bought a Tiger install dvd from a Apple re-seller, attempted to install but about quarter of the way through the installation i got a message to the effect of 'Installation can't continue. Please restart'.
As instructed, i restarted but got a message that included the text - 'Kernel Panic. Panic: We are hanging here....'.
I powered down, retrieved the dvd (which had a few marks on it) and then copied it to a blank dvd (on my pc), thinking it was a physical problem with the dvd.
After restarting (holding down 'c'), i re-installed via the new disc without any problems.... until the machine restarted to finish the installation.
Now, it gets as far as the grey, rectangular progress box (titled 'Mac OS X') but nothing else happens. No blue blocks on the progress bar or any text.
I've tried restarting after removing the following peripherals but i can't get past the 'Mac OS X' screen.
2 Gb ram (4 x 512Mb strips, brand new Kingston)
    ATI Radeon 7000 video card
    Motu PCI 424 soundcard
    USB hub (and attached peripherals)
    All firewire equipment.
Any help would be massively appreciated.
    Many thanks in advance,
    Jason.

tech specs for mac mini model MMB139LL//AA iindicate ttiger iin ssoftware bbut I cant do clean install

You must use the 10.4.10 (8R3014) System Disc that came with that Mini, or a later OS X (Leopard, Snow Leopard) Retail Upgrade Disc to do a clean install.
See > Don't install a version of Mac OS X earlier than what came with your Mac

  • Install Tiger 10.4 on a Pismo

I've read a few posts here about problems installing Tiger on a Pismo, which fails and ends up with kernel panics. I've had a few problems like this in the past.
What I've found in my experience is that most of the trouble stems from having more than 512MB of memory installed. From what I've read online, the problem here is that 512MB modules weren't available when the Pismo came out, which means that only 2 x 256MB was the maximum memory. Installing more than 512MB seems to cause problems or conflicts when installing 10.4.
This may not be the case for everyone, but I've seen this problem on 5 different Pismos over the years. So what I've done on my own Pismo and on a few friends' Pismos is that, when you want to install Tiger 10.4, be sure to have no more than 512MB installed; please note that a single 512MB module works fine. You can then install Tiger and, after you're up and running okay, you can then re-install the 512MB module. This way, I know of 5 Pismos running 10.4.11 with 1GB of memory (2 x 512MB) and they work great.
Still love the old Pismo, great for writing and the web on the go (with internal Airport or Airport Extreme-compatible PCMCIA card), great for watching DVDs, really rugged, great keyboard, and you probably don't have to worry as much about someone stealing it, as you would with a Macbook Air.

Yes, it's a bit strange. I think I remember reading this somewhere on the web years ago, and when I and a few others had the aforementioned problem - i.e., attempt to install Tiger ended up with a failed install and kernel panics - I remembered the solution about having only 512MB installed, which did indeed work. On no less than 5 different Pismos over the years.
I mentioned this only because I read another thread here about someone having similar problems, but the thread had been closed, so I started a new one, in the hope it might help others.
The interesting thing is that, once Tiger installs okay, you can reinstall the second RAM module and not have any problems. I went up to 1GB of RAM and have updated Tiger to 10.4.11, which runs very well on the G3/500 Pismo. I installed a faster HD with 7200 rpm and it all runs pretty quick. Other upgrades include a DVD burner and a PCMCIA card that is recognized by the OS as an Airport Extreme card, so needs no 3rd party drivers (the card is a Motorola WN 825G). Also have a Belkin USB Bluetooth key, which is recognized by the OS as an Apple Bluetooth card, but I don't use it much.
All in all, the Pismo still runs great.

  • Problems installing Snow Leopard (10.6) on Mini

I did a clean install on my Mac Mini (Macmini3.1 - Intel Core Duo, 2 GHz).  It came with Leopard (10.5), which I installed, including all the updates.  However, I got an error message after installing part of the Snow Leopard (10.6) DVD that was burned by the store where I bought the used mini.  The error message was that the disk needed to be cleaned. I used a DVD disk cleaner, and blew some compressed air into the DVD slot.  I also wiped off the DVD with a lint-free cloth. However, now it just ejects the DVD every time.  I have installed using this disk before with no problem.  In fact, this is only the third time the DVD has been used.
I've tried the DVD in my MacBook and it mounts with no problem.
I ran hardware test, and it shows no problems found.
I've inserted other Apple software DVDs, such as iWork and iLife, and it rejects them as well.  However, it never rejects the original install DVDs.
I tried using a retail version of Snow Leopard, but it immediately ejects it.
Do you think the optical drive is failing, or have you got other ideas what might be causing this?

Thanks for your suggestion, Arch_PL, but I could not get any farther than seeing the DVD icon, selecting it and pressing return, in your point #5 above.  After that, the Mini remained in permanent startup mode, i.e., grey Apple icon and spinning beach ball.
My MacBook has 400 firewire and my Mini has 800, but I do use an adapter.  I do not know if that contributed to any problems.
The Apple Support article, HT1661, explains that some Intel-based Macs may need a firmware update if the target mode does not work properly.  However, I looked at the firmware update article, HT1237, and it does not appear I need any updates.

  • I have an old mini running os x 10.4 . im about to upgrade to 10.6 (the highest this dinosaur will upgrade to) but i have a ton of music recording software installed and need to know if it will affect it . please help ? any of it

i have an old mini running os x 10.4 . i'm about to upgrade to 10.6 but have a ton of music and recording software installed and need to know if it will affect any thing i have installed . does newer garageband  work with older gband files ?please help ??

Sorry about that, yes, 10.5 and 10.6 on Intel can run Firefox 4.
Here's the process to roll back:
First, I recommend backing up your Firefox settings in case something goes wrong. See [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Backing+up+your+information Backing up your information]. (You can copy your entire Firefox profile folder somewhere outside of the Mozilla folder.)
Next, download and save Firefox 3.6 to your desktop for future installation. http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all-older
You could install Firefox 3.6 over Firefox 4 (many have reported success) or you could uninstall Firefox first. If you uninstall, do not remove your personal data and settings, just the program.
Firefox 3.6 should pick up where you left off. If there are serious issues, please post back with details.
Note: I haven't actually tried this myself!

  • Installing Tiger on MacBook Pro. . . Problems. . .

    Hi,
Im trying to install Tiger on my MacBook Pro. Im having a lot of problems and ive decided to reinstall everything. As i bought this second hand, it did not come with any CDs/DVDs and documentation. Its running Tiger OSX 10.4.11 at the moment and i will not let me restart from the DVD disc or open the application. It says that i cannot install Tiger on this computer.
Does anyone have any ideas on how i can do this?
    Thanks, Ben

You will need to get the original system DVDs that came w/the comp from the person you brought it from. The person should NOT have sold you the computer without them which violates Apple's Agreement.
Until you get the system DVDs all you have is a glorified doorstop.
You can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.
If you're not in the US, you may need to go through the regional Apple Store that serves your location to find the contact number. Here's a list of links to all of those -

i have a new iMac but having problems installing final cut express 4 from old macbook pro ?

FCE was discontinued nearly 3 years ago and is no longer supported.
I don't know whether it's possible to install it on Mavericks and if you do it may not perform properly.
Final Cut pro X and iMovie are the only Apple apps that are supported.
