Problems installing Tiger on the Beige G3

I have a rev A Beige G3 with a sonnet 500MHz G4 upgrade, a pioneer DVD RW drive and the original 6gb hard drive.
I am trying to install tiger, but I'm having problems. I can insert the disk and it will show up fine on the OS9.2 desktop, but when I launch XPostFacto 4.1, it says that the symbolic links to /etc, /tmp and /var and missing or damaged. But the DVD works fine in OSX 10.0 on the beige, and in 10.4 on a Sawtooth.
I would have tried using Jaguar to run XPostFacto, but I have too many problems with the monitor switching off during the installation, so I decided not to bother.
Does anyone know what I should do?
Thanks
Steve

i got tiger running almost 100% but not quite cause tiger refuses to work right with my pioneer dvr-110D. other than that tiger is running great. i had to do the video black out fix for 10.2.8 for tiger cause tiger would do the same thing.
sorry for not having a quick link to the fix cause im on my other Beige G3 AIO and i dont have it bookmarked.
what i did was get tiger 10.4 installed, then proformed the fix and rebooted and the onboard video didnt come on. this is where a second video card comes in handy ( wich i have a Radeon 7000 i use as main screen. then i installed the 10.4.7 update and rebooted and the onboard video started to work again and all has been well since with the video.
now the pioneer DVR-110D drive didnt work hardly at all in 10.4 or 10.4.7 it would not mount unless i booted with a disk in the drive. but still then even tho it was mounted it would not work or play dvd movies or audio cd's or burn disk's.
i updated to 10.4.8 and the drive will still not mount unless i boot with a disk in the drive. but when a disk is mounted it will play dvd movies and audio cd's but it still wont burn disk's ( some times it will burn half way but fail) and some times will stop working during dvd movie playback and audio cd playback.
now in OS 9.2.2 with the modded Pioneercdr authoring extention i can burn disk's with iTunes and the built in burn program. and will burn flawlessly with toast titanium. the drive also worked great in OS X 10.2.- 10.2.8 and have burn ability with patchburn installed
tiger on the other hand will not play nice with my drive. but other than that tiger run's great on my system. the spec's of my system are in my sig

  • Problems installing Tiger on G3

I am having troubles installing OS X (10.4) on our G3 Desktop (Blue and White). The G3 has almost all original hardware, including built on firewire. Things added were a DVD Drive from a G4. It meets all the required specs for Tiger. It has all the latest updates and firmware upgrades. And the version I am trying to install is a generic OS X Tiger Installation Disk, for multiple computers.
When inserting the DVD on bootup, the display never comes out of powersave mode. If I start the system without the DVD in the drive, it boots into OS 9.2.2 just fine. Then if I insert the disc it pulls up the contents, I click on the installer and it says click Restart to begin the installation. Again it tries to boot but nothing ever shows up on the screen. I can hear the DVD drive spinning up about 30 seconds after restart, but nothing ever happens.
I've tried holding 'C', I've tried selecting it as a startup disk from within OS 9. I've even tried to install over the network, but everytime it tries to bootup the installation, the screen never gets a signal.
If you can please give me some suggestions I would really appreciate it!

Hello there...i have a problem installing tiger 10.4.6 ....cd boots ok and all; and it starts installing and all..... but at the very end it gives me this "there were errors please try to install again" (and of course i tried like 1000 times....actually 1001)the software is original and the computer meets the minimum requirements....now ...do i need to go ahead and install the very first os x and then this one? and how do i use the Diagnostic at boot up? (i'm new at Mac and don't know much) any help would be Highly appreciated...Best of Luck everybody!!!

  • Problems installing Tiger onto G3 Imac - please help!

    hi all.
i've tried to install tiger onto a g3 imac but i'm having some problems.
basically, once i've inserted the install dvd and restarted, the screen is either totally blank or it's very very dark and the desktop is sliding off to one side, plus the text and icons are blurred.
i checked that i didn't need to update the firmware first, and the computer said that i didn't need to.
does anyone have any idea what i can do? i don't have the original OS9 install disk any more and i'm starting to panic ...
    thanks in advance

    Jon,
Not to be silly but do you you have DVD capabilities? Not all G3s (mine included) have DVD drives. Is the firmware 4.1.9? What is your machines specs? Do you have enough ram, hard disk space?
I haven't read about these types of going ons, however on the Tiger OS X.4 discussion board Gulliver has an excellent check list/ decision tree.

You may want to check that out as well as reposting your topic on the Tiger board.
Sorry I couldn't help more than possibly pointing you in the right direction.
    Good luck,

  • Problems installing Tiger on 700mhz iMac

Hi - I think I have the answer, but wanted to double check with the forum experts!
I have a. I'm trying to install Tiger (that came with the next generation iMac), but when it starts up from the Tiger install disk (using external DVD drive), I get the "screen of death" (ie: black screen with giberish and a gray circle in the center).
I take it that my copy of Tiger is not retail and specific to my newer mac only? And that is why I'm getting this message?
Are there any copies to purchase for my older iMac? Thanks in advance for any help!
    Mike

    Hi jt202,
This forum is specifically for advice on the old G4 (Flat Panel) iMacs. Your problem seems to be related to using the iPhone. I suggest you repost in the iPhone forums.
EDIT: I see you already have.

  • Problems installing tiger on old mini

I have a old G4 1.25 mini which I have upgraded the RAM from 250 to 1 GB (third party RAM) . Have tried to install tiger (disk from my imac G5) and been unsuccessful. I have done some research and found information that states if you have installed 3rd party RAM future upgrades of OS maybe unsuccessful.
I have read some other posts that have stated if you use "apple store" bought tiger or leopard it should install no problem. I haven't purchased anything yet as I dont want to waste my money.
Does anybody know if I will be able to install tiger or leopard if I buy it from the apple store? Please help because now i cant even get my hotmail account to work on 10.3.9!

The machine-specific OS X disks won't load on another system, as you've found out. You need the store/Apple bought version.
All RAM is 3rd party RAM, as Apple doesn't manufacture their own memory. They do use Crucial/Micron and Samsung, amongst others. What's important is the quality of the RAM ... sometimes el cheapo RAM, while meeting the Apple specs, may not work so well.

  • Problem installing CC on the PC side of a mini Mac

    Hi,
My employer has two computers that only I work on. One is an iMac using the Mac OS and the other is a miniMac using Parallels8 where I use the PC side.
This is a security measure that my employer insists on since we cannot afford to have any productivity downtime in the event that one of the machines fail.
CC works perfectly fine on the iMac's OS, but when I went to install it on the PC side of the miniMac it simply won't allow me to and keeps brining up the message: "Download error. Please contact customer support."
I have contacted customer support and they were unable to help me, and pointed me in the direction of these forums.
Our user licence should allow us to have CC installed simultaneously on both the PC side and Mac side.
Any workable solutions I can implement would be much appreciated.

  • Problems installing Tiger on G4 mirror

    Hi,
I wonder if anyone may be able to shed some light on this:
I recently bought a Tiger install dvd from a Apple re-seller, attempted to install but about quarter of the way through the installation i got a message to the effect of 'Installation can't continue. Please restart'.
As instructed, i restarted but got a message that included the text - 'Kernel Panic. Panic: We are hanging here....'.
I powered down, retrieved the dvd (which had a few marks on it) and then copied it to a blank dvd (on my pc), thinking it was a physical problem with the dvd.
After restarting (holding down 'c'), i re-installed via the new disc without any problems.... until the machine restarted to finish the installation.
Now, it gets as far as the grey, rectangular progress box (titled 'Mac OS X') but nothing else happens. No blue blocks on the progress bar or any text.
I've tried restarting after removing the following peripherals but i can't get past the 'Mac OS X' screen.
2 Gb ram (4 x 512Mb strips, brand new Kingston)
    ATI Radeon 7000 video card
    Motu PCI 424 soundcard
    USB hub (and attached peripherals)
    All firewire equipment.
Any help would be massively appreciated.
    Many thanks in advance,
    Jason.

  • How to install Tiger in the MacBook Aluminium?

Tiger is NOT letting me install it on my new MacBook...
any idea on how to hack it?

You can't. You cannot install any version of OS X which was out prior to the release of your machine. The first release of the unibody MacBook will only run Leopard.

  • Stop installing Tiger before the Welcome screen appears

I would like to give my Mac away as a gift to a newbie and consider it nice to give him a Mac that feels like being delivered from the factory.
This means: I would like him to see the welcome screen first (the one where all the Welcomes in hundred different languages appear immediately after you power up your Mac for the first time ever).
Unfortunately, after following the usual process of starting from recovery disk, erasing the Hard Drive and installing the OS it starts this screen automatically. I do not see a way to stop it or make sure that it appears again upon next power up of the Mac. On the contrary: You must enter your personal settings immediately.
I read something about this years ago and think I remember it was a UNIX-Code which had to be entered. But even if so: Where can I enter? I cannot open Terminal in this stage?

    @Steve:
The good news: I do not have to be ashamed of myself.
The bad news: No, you cannot go up to Setup Assistent menu bar.
After the installing process is finished the Mac runs into the described "Welcome" windows and asks for registration and setup of an administrator account. There is absolutely nothing you can do to avoid that. There is no menu bar, no button, no nothing.
All the good advices here and elsewhere are talking of entering commands or starting in single-user mode or other, but you simply cannot go into anything. Even the keyboard shortcuts (cmd-alt-esc, etc.) do not work.
I have found a workaround which I really hesitated to use but it obviously works: During the floating around of the "Welcome" logos I pushed the On-Off switch for 8 seconds thereby killing the Mac. After a restart it starts exactly with the "Welcome" window and asks for registration. But this is really not a nice way to treat a Mac.
    Thank you anyway.

  • Has anyone else had problems installing drivers for the Canon MF4570dn?

I recently purchased a Canon MF4570dn multifunction printer, to be installed on my network at home. It works very nicely with my wife's Windows 7 box.
On the other hand, I cannot install the driver software on either of my Macs (iMac i7 running 10.6.8 or G4 running 10.4.11). The installer fails when it gets to the point of running its internal scripts, and provides a proposed "solution" of "Call the software provider."
Canon technical support is unable to help. I have reset printers in the system preferences, I have downloaded the installer package multiple times from their web site, I have repaired permissions, all to no effect. Their final suggestion is "Call Apple Technical Support and have them perform a 'profile reset'." (I've never heard of such a thing, in 27.5 years of owning Macintoshes. Has anyone else????)
So my question is this: If you have one of these on your system, did you have any issues getting the drivers installed? If so, how did you overcome them?
    Thanks,
    Rich Alderson

  • Problem installing iBooks on the original iPad

    Hi!
I have three apple products in the house: an old original iPad, an iPhone 4 and an iPhone 5s.
The original iPad is on iOS 5.1.1 - there is no support of a newer version of iOS for this product. I was particularly using this device for  reading, with tons of books loaded in iBooks.
Yesterday the device (itself) decided to update the iBooks app but was stuck in the middle. I had to delete the app and tried to reinstall it anew from the AppStore. However the version currently available at the AppStore won't install, telling that I need to update to iOS 7 (which is not available for this device).
Is there a way to install an older version of iBooks on the original iPad?
    Thank you.

Yes, there is a way to download iBooks to your original iPad.  Last October, Apple quietly came up with a way.  Follow these simple steps.
    Open iTunes on your computer
Go to the App Store and download iBooks to your iTunes librarry
No, go to your iPad.  Tap the purchased tab in the App Store
You should see iBooks with a cloud icon next to it
Tap the cloud and you will be given the option of downloading a version for a lower iOS version

  • Help needed to track down Problem in tiger with Pioneer DVR-110D

ok as i stated in another topic i own a Beige G3 AIO that is running OS 9.2.2 and OS X 10.4.8 and i have done allot to this system to get it to run faster and to run properly.
part of this setup has a Pioneer DVR-110D it there and when i bought it i was running OS 9.2.2 only. at first i could not burn anything with it cause it wasn't supported and when i went to put the system to sleep it would freeze when i would wake it up it never did this before i installed the drive so i knew what was causing it.
i turned off HDD sleep and the problem was fixed. but i didn't like the ideal of having the hdd running all the time when idle. me and a friend was talking about optical drive issues and he said he found this driver replacement for the apple cd/dvd driver called intech speed tool's 6.0 for OS 9.2.2 and that i should give it a try cause it fixed a few problems for him.
i downloaded the demo of it and installed it and i turned on hdd sleep and put the system to sleep and woke it back up and the system was running great. so now the wake up freeze problem was cured. but still no burn support. so after a few weeks of posting on here about the problem some one came by and said he knew what the problem was and sent me a modded PioneerCDR authoring support extension. i installed it and rebooted and opened iTunes and iTunes showed Pioneer DVR-110D as the devise to burn to. so i tryed it and behold it burned a audio cd with no problems.
later i bought a western digital SE 120gb hdd and installed it and partitioned it 3 times a 8gb first partition for OS X a second partition 10gb for OS 9.2.2 and the 3rd partition was the rest of the drives size for shared data and storage. the hdd worked great with no issues so it was time to try OS X on this system cause i was waiting to get a large HDD to do so.
i figured that the Pioneer drive would not boot the OS X jaguar cd and is a known problem with non apple cd rom drives. so i took out the Pioneer and reinstalled the apple 24x stock cd rom drive. and the jag install cd booted without a hitch. Jag installed and was running so i updated to 10.2.8 and found out the internal screen kept going out and locking the system up. so i searched this forum for the onboard video blackout and came across the terminal work around to get the system to behave itself with having more than 192mb ram installed. i rebooted and all went fine afterward.
i reinstalled the Pioneer drive and went to testing it all was fine everything mounted on the desktop that i put in the drive. but i lacked the ability to burn with the drive cause still the drive wasn't supported be the system so i searched the forum and came across the program called patchburn. i downloaded it and ran it and patched the driver to support iApps burning with this drive. so i put in a blank cd and went to burn in iTunes it burned flawlessly so i tryed a dvd-r with the finder it to burned flawlessly.
o loved playing a game planeshift and then they stopped supporting 10.2.8 so i went to buy the tiger install cd's. i already knew the Beige G3 was not a supported version of Os X on this system and you had to use xpostfacto 4 to install tiger on this system. so i did what i had to do to install tiger on the system and selected use old NDRV and selected to install tiger. which installed some files to boot tiger and rebooted yet again the Pionner drive refused to boot the install cd's . i got mad and held down the command option power key's for about 10 seconds and let off. the tiger installer booted and got to where it started to copy the files to the hdd and stalled out and the drive spun down never to spin back up or show signs of life so i powered down the system and removed the pioneer drive and put the stock 24x cdrom in and installed tiger.
after tiger was installed i shut down the system and installed the pioneer drive. and powered back on and it was in verbose mode showing what was going on one part showed that the Pioneer drive was detected but had no kernel dependencies and continued to boot. i went to repair the permitions when the onboard video went blank and the system locked up. i rembered that 10.2.8 did the same thing so i tried the 10.2.8 screen blackout fix in 10.4 and rebooted. the onboard video didnt come on but since i had a ATI Radeon 7000 i could work around in tiger to update to 10.4.7 at the time. i first repaired permitions and then ran software update and updated everything and rebooted. the onboard video came back on allong with the ATI Radeon 7000 which being used as boot video device and shown the gray apple logo with the spinning pin wheel at the bottom.
so far tiger was running great so i put a disk in the drive and nothing it didn't mount anything so i ejected it with the button on front of the drive and tryed a dvd movie and got the same nothing as with the cd. so i rebooted with the dvd in the drive al behold tiger mounted the dvd but as soon as i would try to do anything with it the drive would stop and i would have to reboot the system to gain the drive back so i can repair permissions. and never tryed to use the drive again
10.4.8 update came out i updated to it using software update and rebooted. the update went flawless so i thought to myself what if the pioneer drive worked now. so i put a cd in the drive and it mounted the disk. then i ejected it with amazement and put a dvd in and it to mounted. so i tryed to play the dvd and it played the dvd to the end of the movie. i took out the dvd and rebooted. i tryed to put the dvd back in but it didnt mount. which ****** me off as to why it was just working and now its not.
i rebooted and the dvd mounted as soon as the desktop showed up so i tried to play it but this time it only played for about 10-13 minutes before the drive stopped spinning which made dvd player stop responding which made me have to force quit the dvd player and try to restart which gave me a kernel panic. so i forced restarted (got a forum to send to apple to report the KP so i did) and the dvd mounted once again as soon as the desktop showed so i ejected the dvd and put a audio cd in and it mounted and i played the hole cd. so i ejected that and put a blank cd in and treed to burn and it got to 30% and then the drive spun down and made the disk utility stop responding. so i forced quit disk utility and rebooted. once it rebooted nothing popped up so i pressed the eject button on the drive and the cd r came out.
the OS X 10.4.8 update made the drive more stable but still wont burn anything. some times it will still not mount anything, some time it will not play anything, and still fails to copy files over to the hdd. so now im left to believe its a driver issue some where since this drive worked so flawlessly in jaguar and OS 9 but fails to work properly in tiger.
i looked in the extensions in ASP in 10.4.8 and there is a few extensions showing errors. i made a list of them to show

that is the list of extensions that are reporting some sort of errors. at first i was figuring it was a problem with the driver for the Pioneer drive but my friend brought over his digital audio G4 which was also running 10.4.8. and we decided to try the drive in his Mac to see if there was any problems. it mounted everything we threw in it. it played dvd's great and played audio cd's great, it copied files over to the hdd without fail. it even burned a flawless cd. ok now the ideal of the driver for the drive was thrown out the window. so it has to be something else causing the problem. either a driver for a part on the motherboard or what i have no clue.
im just wondering what driver it would be causing a problem not allowing the Pioneer drive to work properly. cause its not the drive being bad cause it worked flawlessly in OS 9.2.2 and jaguar and in tiger in my friends digital audio G4
im just wondering if anyone might know what could be done to fix this problem cause i know it can be fixed but i don't know where to begin or how. so i ask you how could i begin to fix this
thank you all for baring with me and reading all this. i know i wrote allot but i had to explain what was going on before i could ask for help so you could better understand what was going on. i have already updated the firmware to the latest with no change the firmware use to be the old 1.11

yea i have along time ago and also made a update to xlr8's drive database. cause i fixed the problems with the drive in OS 9.2.2 (AKA no burn support with the built in burning app or iTunes, now have full support for burning with the finder burn and iTunes thanks to a edited PioneerCDR authoring support extension that someone edited for me. found out that the Apple CD/DVD driver extension was at fault for the locking up on wake up with hdd sleep enabled that started when i installed the Pioneer drive. fixed with intech CD/DVD speedtools 6.0).
When i did the first report on the drive database on xlr8yourmac i reported what problems i was having in OS 9.2.2 and i think i reported that i had no problems in jaguar, and was trying to obtain a driver or something to try to get it to work. but to no avail at first. after i fixed the problems i did a update report
in jaguar the drive had no problems but no burn support. installed patchburn and the drive worked 100% in jag no problems what so ever. im thinking it has somthing to do with one or all of the extensions with errors but i can be wrong.
i just wonder where ryan has been on the forums in OWC's site. cause i would like to submit my crash log panic log and the extensions with errors so he could help track down the problems to see if it cant be fixed. but ive tried emailing him but no replay's. and his last reply on the OWC forums was back in desember 2005 a few day's over a year
i know it isnt the drive cause it worked flawlessly in tiger 10.4.8 on my friends Digital Audio but i know why it worked fine cause it has the proper files for the DA to work cause its a supported system. i would like to try to help to get xpostfacto to work better on the Beige G3 system
in tiger if it is something to do with xpostfacto

  • Install Tiger 10.4 on a Pismo

I've read a few posts here about problems installing Tiger on a Pismo, which fails and ends up with kernel panics. I've had a few problems like this in the past.
What I've found in my experience is that most of the trouble stems from having more than 512MB of memory installed. From what I've read online, the problem here is that 512MB modules weren't available when the Pismo came out, which means that only 2 x 256MB was the maximum memory. Installing more than 512MB seems to cause problems or conflicts when installing 10.4.
This may not be the case for everyone, but I've seen this problem on 5 different Pismos over the years. So what I've done on my own Pismo and on a few friends' Pismos is that, when you want to install Tiger 10.4, be sure to have no more than 512MB installed; please note that a single 512MB module works fine. You can then install Tiger and, after you're up and running okay, you can then re-install the 512MB module. This way, I know of 5 Pismos running 10.4.11 with 1GB of memory (2 x 512MB) and they work great.
Still love the old Pismo, great for writing and the web on the go (with internal Airport or Airport Extreme-compatible PCMCIA card), great for watching DVDs, really rugged, great keyboard, and you probably don't have to worry as much about someone stealing it, as you would with a Macbook Air.

Yes, it's a bit strange. I think I remember reading this somewhere on the web years ago, and when I and a few others had the aforementioned problem - i.e., attempt to install Tiger ended up with a failed install and kernel panics - I remembered the solution about having only 512MB installed, which did indeed work. On no less than 5 different Pismos over the years.
I mentioned this only because I read another thread here about someone having similar problems, but the thread had been closed, so I started a new one, in the hope it might help others.
The interesting thing is that, once Tiger installs okay, you can reinstall the second RAM module and not have any problems. I went up to 1GB of RAM and have updated Tiger to 10.4.11, which runs very well on the G3/500 Pismo. I installed a faster HD with 7200 rpm and it all runs pretty quick. Other upgrades include a DVD burner and a PCMCIA card that is recognized by the OS as an Airport Extreme card, so needs no 3rd party drivers (the card is a Motorola WN 825G). Also have a Belkin USB Bluetooth key, which is recognized by the OS as an Apple Bluetooth card, but I don't use it much.
All in all, the Pismo still runs great.

  • Installing tiger on an ibook w/o dvd, but using target disc mode?

so here is the problem. i bought tiger for my ibook (g3 500mhz 312 mb airport cd drive...) so i found out the hard way that i can not install tiger dvd on my ibook (it has a cd drive.) so i was thinking and booted it up in target disc mode on my g4 tower running 10.2.8 the hard drive came up on the g4 and i installed sucessfully tiger on to the ibook! i was really excited that it worked. (i really didn;t want to order the cd set from apple)
so i went to start and download updates and it didn't connect. so i went to configure the airport and had a ton of problems. it just won't! airport will not recgonize any networks, and i have done it all to configure it. the ibook sees the card too!
so i took the card out of the ibook and installe dit in tehg4 tower and bravo it works just fine, so the problem is not the card at all.
i then took the ibiik to firsttech (an apple store) and they booted it up in network mode and the card worked just fine! they think that because i installed tiger fro a computer that was not running an airport network that it did not install that part of the software. this i do not believe becaust all of the airport stuff is there to configure, the problem is it just won't.
so to make things more interesting the screen will freeze. and after that when i reboot the ibook the screen is dead. and it stays dead for a while so this is just a pain. i try to reboot it in target disc mode but the icon does not show up on the host computer. i can run system profiler and the g4 will see the ibook as a firewire device in target disc mode, but i just can't see it on the desktop. i can hear the hard drive running, and i get the chime so i know it is on.
so i know that the problem is probably tiger as i know that there have some problems with it. but i just don't get it. b4 i reinstall 10.2 can anyone give me any help fixing tiger?
    THANKS!
    SEAN

    Hi sean,
first of all: WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSIONS!
You probably did the target-disk install the wrong way round. If you booted the G4 from the install DVD and from there installed Tiger to the G3 iBook you have installed the G4 hardware drivers which are not compatible with the iBook.
You have to do it this way:
Insert the install DVD into the G4. Start the G4 into target disk mode by holding down the t-key during boot. Connect the G4 to the iBook using a firewire cable. Now boot the iBook while holding down the option-key. This will bring you into the boot manager where you can select the install DVD as boot-volume.
Once the installer has started perform an Archive&Install to the iBook hard disk. This should solve your problem.
Remember: Repair permissions before and after an update!
