Problems logging in to iChat (AIM)

About 1 out of 3 times that I log into my AIM buddy list, my status shows as being connected, but none of my contacts appear in my buddy list.
Even after quitting and restarting iChat, nothing changes. The only solution I have discovered is to got preferences, and delete the AIM account, and then re-add it back into my account list.
Any ideas?

Hi
Try logging on to AIM on port 443 rather than port 5190.
Go to IChat in the menu bar > Preferences > Accounts.
Log out of AIM and then use the Server Settings tab
Set the port to 443.
Log back in again.

  • Can't log in with iChat (AIM Account)

    Hello to yall,
I'm sitting in Lyon, France and my iChat isn't working. I have to get connected to the internet via LAN here and I think this is the problem. iChat won't let me log in. It tries to connect for a while and finally it tells me the following (translation):
Could not connect with AIM. The connection could not be closed because it took too much time.
    Please try again later.
Something like that. soooooo, what might be the problem?
Everything else on the internet ist working, the browser, email... just iChat is giving me a hard time. I even tried to connect my iMac with the LAN and there I have the same problems. It must be the LAN but I do not know what to do about it.
    Any options?

    Hi Primzahl:
    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Try changing your port to 443. iChat>Preferences>Accounts>Server Setting
Let us know how that works for you!

  • Problems Logging On iChat using AIM

I am new to iChat and am trying to use iChat AV.
I do not have a .mac account and am trying to use an AIM account.
I can open and connect with AIM when opening from AIM program.
However, when I open iChat AV (3.1.8) it prompts me for my password. When I enter the password I get an error that "iChat was unable to login to the AOL Instant Messenger service because your screen name or password was incorrect". I have verified both and am unable to log into iChat.
I read another posting about the same issue using a .mac account but the issue was unresolved and the answers were a little confusing as to how to solve the problem.
    I am using AIM 4.7
MacBook Pro 15"   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   2.33 GHz Intel

Aim screen name reads as it should.
I checked and have not by accident added it as an @mac name.
Checked the preferences and Running man is there.
The box to check multiple logins had not been checked and I did so.
In addition the password in the preferences had not been added so I added the password. It later showed up as longer when I went back to check to make sure it had taken but I understand this is normal.
I again tried to log on while making sure AIM 4.7 was not running. I received the same error message.
I do remember reading one of the discussions where I believe you talked about possibly taking out the . and maybe the @ for the names. So if my user name was [email protected] it should actually read example123aimcom or example123@aimcom when I open iChat. Did I read that correctly and if so what should it be when I open iChat and check my preferences?
Regardless, I have tried it multiple ways and still get the same error message about the password being incorrect and can not log on.

  • I can't log in to ichat due to the fact that I can't connect with aim.

i can't log in to ichat due to the fact that I can't connect with aim. everytime i try to log in it gives an ichat connection alert saying that the connection to the host was unexpectedly lost. the weird thing is that it let me sign on the first time then all of the sudden it just clicked off, giving me that message.
      Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    I'm having the same problem.
I know this is an Apple forum, but is there anywhere that we can get info about AOL's servers (i.e., which regions are having trouble, etc)? I'm in France, and AOL seems to shut down at about 6:00pm every day. This is very frustrating, since the people i'm trying to talk to are in the US.
Edit: the firewall port solution doesn't work, either. It's AOL.

  • IChat AIM Problems withbanned users.

I was arbitrarily banned by an AIM room owner. I made a new AIM account, but iChat is saying that I'm banned, regardless of the user name / screen name. I am able to enter the rooms with AIM Instant Messanger, but not with iChat. Any ideas how to fix this?

Thanks Ralph, but that's not it at all. I deleted everything to do with iChat, including the application itself. I also deleted ALL of my keychain passwords from AIM, as well as the signing certificate. Nothing has worked for me. I suspect there is another link somewhere in the system that has attached itself to iChat 4. Last night I even did a complete reinstall of OS X 10.5, then updated it 10.5.1. Time machine was on though. It still doesn't work. The Ban was lifted yesterday, and I had no problem getting into any of the chatrooms with AOL Instant Messenger. So something's up with iChat 4, at least on my system anyway. I could not find the file named: com.apple.ichat.aim.plist however. To better explain what happened, it goes like this. I had one screen name that was banned from an aim chat room. With iChat 4, none of my other screen names will work. They all say that I have been kicked out, and cannot rejoin. However, as I said earlier, AIM Messenger works just fine now. It's very strange, and I can only assume that something is wrong with another unknown file that is linked to iChat 4. Fortunately, the first time I deleted all the iChat files, it allowed me into the rooms, but only for a few seconds. Then an error dialog came up and said: your encryption link with "**** lol [email protected]" has been damaged, or broken, or something like that. So I assumed that that user was the hacker that broke my iChat. I have to believe at this time that something is wrong somewhere else in the system files that are linked to iChat 4. I could be wrong, but I've tried just about everything, except erasing my laptop drive, and reinstalling everything anew. So, I dunno?
    Thanks.

  • Ichat/aim/adium problems

when i sign in to ichat, aim, and adium, i stay logged in for a little while, but then it signs me off and doesn't tell me that i've been kicked off. it looks like i'm online but none of my friends can see me. there is a lag like this for a couple of minutes and then it finally tells me that the connection timed out if i try typing another message. this is very frustrating. i've tried reinstalling everything and it doesn't help. i have also tried changing the aim port to 443. does anyone have any insight?

    Hi,
Try turning Off the SSL option in iChat  (And in Adium if it has it).
iChat needs this manually reset if the Connection is lost to the SSL server at AIM  (It also goes down more frequently than the regular server).

  • Connecting problems to chat client (iChat, Adium, Aim)

My sister and I each have an apple computer, I have an iBook G4 and she just bought a new macbook. I have been having problems with my laptop connecting to ichat, adium, or aim. With each service I receive an error stating in someway that a connection cannot be made. I thought that maybe I could solve this problem when I set up my sister's new computer, however she has the same problems. iChat just pretends to connect for hours and never does, Adium says, "cannot connect to authentication server, socket disconnected" and Aim always says something to the extent of can't connect.
I know now that this is not a computer problem necessary because both computers are experiencing the same problems. I can use AIM fine on my PC at home and I used to be able to do it on my mac too. Any ideas as to how I can connect to the chat clients? THANKS!

    Hi Tony,
I hope you're reading this...I can't do audiochat anymore. Whenever I try and invite someone or an invitation is sent to me it doesn't connect. I can instant message and chat regularly, but the audiochat won't work. I tried the 443 port and it still didn't work. When I changed the port, it wouldn't connect to AIM at all, so I had to change it to the default settings. Please help!!!

  • Problems logging in even after changing the port

I first had the problem logging in when I got my mac, and changed the port number and all was fine.
Just recently, after some unrelated issues with our router, I started having more problems. Things were working up until yesterday.
I will try to log in to iChat using the 443 port number, and it tells me " An undefined AIM socket error occured", then switches to the original port number, logs me in and out repeatedly, and says I have tried to log in too many times, etc. It won't keep the 443 number set for logging in either.
    Help!

    Hi,
Try these two things one after the other. (i.e. use the second if th first does not work)
    1) Go to you home Folder/Library/Preferences by manually clicking through them
Delete com.apple.iChat.AIM.plist and then restart iChat.
Restarting iChat recreates the .plist and forces it to re-establish the Login info.
If successful change the port to 443.
    2) GO to the iChat Menu > Preferences > Accounts and highlight the miscreant
Use the Minus button and delete it.
Re-add the Account/screen name using the Plus Button.

  • IChat /Aim/.mac video

    Aloha!
I just got my new iMac and am having trouble connecting with the video portion of iChat. I tried through AIM, then changed to .mac to try that...... I have read many posts and tried various suggestions. My son has been helping me walk through these different things, but to no avail. I have changed the Quicktime settiing, I have tried changing the port to 5191 and 443. My son thinks it may be my ISP provider, but they say they have no ports closed. I would appreciate any help. We finally got the error message to change and this is the log from that:

    Video Conference User Report:

    Hi Suefis,
    Welcome to the  Discussions
The log itself does not suggest the ports are blocked by the ISP.
    iChat works like this.
Logging on with the default 5190 port is on the TCP protocol
Some info for the Buddy List and file sending and some specific Text chats happen on the 5190 port on the UDP protocol.
When you send an A/V invite this goes out on port 5678 on the UDP Protocol.
If your Buddy sees this and accepts iChat moves to port 5060 on the UDP protocol.
At this point it contacts a server called SNATMAP run by Apple.
iChat tells this server which ports to use for vid in, vid out, Audio in and Audio out.
This server acts like and old fashioned telephone exchange where you dailed the operator and asked them to put the call though.
So this server then finds your Buddy and tells the iChat at that end which ports to use.
Then the connection is made and the server drops out and the 1-1 Vidio or Audio chat is Peer to Peer.
Your log contains the iChat ports.
This is where Error 8 gets difficult to pin down.
An Error 8 refers to all sorts of problems with ports and NAT.
    So from the beginning.
The System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming tab needs the setting changed to 1.5Mbps T1/Intranet/LAN and iChat restarted to see this speed change.
The iChat > Preferences > Video section > Bandwidth Limit needs to be set to NONE.
If the Mac Firewall is ON then the ports need to be set there.
System Preferences > Sharing > Firewall tab
    See here http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page4.html#_mactodo
If you have a routing modem or a router then the ports are most likely going to be needed to be opened or allowed there.
This is where NAT (Network Address Translation) can play a part.
Not all manufacturers do NAT the same way and you sometimes seem to get devices at either end that don't like each other.
If you have UPnP In at least one device at your end it can help get around this.
To say more we would need to know make and models or routers and modems you are using and what you have done to set them up as well as the info in the points above.

I was on my iChat aim today then it randomly said "iChat cannot connect with AIM user." I tried changing the port to 443 and nothing happened. This happens sometimes but I'm usually able to fix it but this time its not. All my other users are working but not this one. I tried putting the user that's disconnected into aim.com but it said "cannot log in due to the attempts to try logging in please try again later." I don't know what to do now. Please help.

I'm having this same problem. If i try to initiate an audio or video chat with a windows user it will fail, they will get an error message saying connection error or something along those lines. If a windows user tries to start an audio or video chat with me it will also fail and i would get this long error message...

  • Can't login in to iChat/AIM, Error - Auth:ResvLinkError

When I try to login in to iChat/AIM I get the following error...
    Auth:ResvLinkError
Any ideas? I try logging in on another screen name on my MacBook and have no problems.

    See http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5469597&#5469597
    And worth a try.
Try logging on to AIM on port 443 rather than port 5190.
Go to IChat in the menu bar > Preferences > Accounts.
Log out of AIM and then use the Server Settings tab
    Set the port to 443.
    Log back in again.

i can no longer log into my ichat linked to my gmail.  right after opening up ichat, receive the following message:  lost connection with jabber.  the server has unexpectedly disconnected.  how to troubleshoot?  thanks.

    Hi,
There can be many reasons why the Login is "up the creek".
Any break in the network at your end whilst logged in will cause  an issue.
A sort of discrepancy between what iChat thinks the state should be and what the server thinks.
If they don't agree the server will refuse to accept.
A Crash at the server end which does not log you out properly will also do it.
Any file at any time can be come corrupted.
Luckily with the iChat .plists they are recreated if removed with an iChat Restart.
If it were AIM you can also get your Account Suspended  and this will not log you in.
(It tends to happen from Chat rooms where people notify AIM about bad behaviour (as they see it) and you have to apply to get Un-suspended).
Most of the big IM services use multiple servers.
Sometimes these go out of Sync.
In the case of AIM this happens when they remove Old unused Screen Names from people's Buddy List prior to making them available for re-registration.  I am not sure if this happens at Google.
You seem to be talking about an account that has worked at Work and having new computer at home.
As I mentioned the Priority thing you have not said that it has coincided with the new computer logging in  (this will kick the work Computer out of Google whether you are logged in  on the Web Mail page or in iChat)
IN addition to that iChat stays partially logged in for Off Line IMs
This is done in the background by a support app called iChatAgent
If your Computer is ON but ichat is not started people can still send you Messages.
Instead of saving these on the server until you login iChat will start up.
Depending if the home Mac is effecting the Work Login it may be holding sway over your Login.
Using your girlfriend's login may have booted her Off Line where she normally uses the name/login.
The AIM Side can be specifically set to allow Multiple Logins and therefore NOT allow them.  If this happens you get a warning and messages to do something about it.
You do not get these in any Jabber or Google Login as the Priority setting is supposed to take care of it.
If the Login works at the Web Mail Login and on one computer then the .plist on the work computer is the most likely issue.
There is a small chance that a Corrupt Buddy Pic (Home Folder/Library/Caches/com.apple.iChat/Pictures) may be the cause.
Set this folder to icon view and also use the Finder's View Menu > Show View Options and select icon view.
This should show all pics as their icon.
    Check that all display properly.
At this point I would try a COMBO version update install of the last Update you did over what you have.
This often corrects hard to trace things
    The 10.5.8 COMBO is here

  • Ichat, AIM, Adium frequently disconnect using Airport

Ichat, AIM, & Adium all frequently disconnect when using Airport. I use a Linksys Wireless Router with an Airport extreme card. When directly connected to the router, I have no problem. Using a PC with Windows XP, AIM operates fine. Safari and Firefox work fine, although sometimes I receive errors connecting to pages, when I try again no problem. Using any of the chat programs, I lose connection, but then can reconnect. After a few times, the AOL servers will prevent login.
I use COMCAST Cable internet service. My wireless router uses WEP encryption. I would switch to an AIrport Base station, but doubt it would correct the problem.
I have had this problem previously, but it corrected itself. now it is making chat programs unusable.
    Any ideas?

    Hi John,
By default Linksys units normally have the IP address of 192.168.1.1
Is this true for both your units or have you changed one of them ?
You may only find this out if you connect directly to the Modem one.
Also you have not said if only one of them is doing DHCP.
Example pic 3 on this page. This shows this device as getting it own contact IP address by DHCP (like from your ISP). Further down the page in the pic it shows the device is also acting as a DHCP server to the local net.
If your router is set up like this it could be getting an IP address usng DHCP like this device shows and that would tend to mean that the Modem is acting as a DHCP server as well.
If both devices still have the default IP addresses you will have conflicts, which probably explians the problems you have.

  • "Rend Error" when sending image via iChat/AIM

On my brand new iMac aluminum, I am unable to send, and friends are unable to send, images via iChat AIM 3.1.8 (V445). When either of us try to send, we get the message "An undefined AIM error has occured. The server message was: Rend: Error"
I then spin around and use my old G4 iMac to send an image - no problem. My buddy is also able to send to me, no problem.
Both computers are connected to the same Linksys WRT54G router. When I searched for the term 'rend' only one thread came back which suggested to change the port from 5190 to 443. I did this and it didn't help.
    Any other suggestions?

    Hi Craig,
In the Linksys set up pages you have Application and Gaming (Which is where I think you are talking about)
In there there are several options.
Port Forwarding, Port Triggering, DMZ (possibly UPnP Forwarding and QoS)
Disable any Port Forwarding or Port Triggering. DO not use the DMZ.
Save settings. (you should still have Web browsing and Mail abilities).
GO to the Administration tab on the top row.
    Enable UPnP.
    Save Settings.
UPnP allows multiple computers to use the same ports.
This way the Linksys can be left doing DHCP if you wish and it will not matter if your computer gets a new IP every now and then. Also the Ports are opened by the application and close after a timed period of non use.
You can limit the "Hops" to the number of devices the computer is from the Linksys (1 ?) to make it more secure.
On the main set up page you could limit the the DHCP range to the number of computers you have to prevent outside connections.
The ports you describe so far are only the TExt chatting and file sending ports
