Problems Logging On iChat using AIM

I am new to iChat and am trying to use iChat AV.
I do not have a .mac account and am trying to use an AIM account.
I can open and connect with AIM when opening from AIM program.
However, when I open iChat AV (3.1.8) it prompts me for my password. When I enter the password I get an error that "iChat was unable to login to the AOL Instant Messenger service because your screen name or password was incorrect". I have verified both and am unable to log into iChat.
I read another posting about the same issue using a .mac account but the issue was unresolved and the answers were a little confusing as to how to solve the problem.
I am using AIM 4.7
MacBook Pro 15"   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   2.33 GHz Intel

Aim screen name reads as it should.
I checked and have not by accident added it as an @mac name.
Checked the preferences and Running man is there.
The box to check multiple logins had not been checked and I did so.
In addition the password in the preferences had not been added so I added the password. It later showed up as longer when I went back to check to make sure it had taken but I understand this is normal.
I again tried to log on while making sure AIM 4.7 was not running. I received the same error message.
I do remember reading one of the discussions where I believe you talked about possibly taking out the . and maybe the @ for the names. So if my user name was [email protected] it should actually read example123aimcom or example123@aimcom when I open iChat. Did I read that correctly and if so what should it be when I open iChat and check my preferences?
Regardless, I have tried it multiple ways and still get the same error message about the password being incorrect and can not log on.

  • When I try to log into Ichat using aim, it says my password is not correct. But I know for a fact it is. What can I do?

I have already tried deleting com.apple.ichat.plist. What else can I do?? I had been using ichat and all the sudden it logged out and now I can't log back in. Thank you!

    Hi,
If this is an Apple ID that ends @mac.com or @me.com the password needs to be 16 characters or less.

  • IChat using AIM account suddenly won't work with MAC accounts

    Hello,
Our company is all Mac and uses ichat on a daily basis for employees to communicate around the world. I have a user in Canada who is experiencing a perplexing problem.
Until recently, her iChat text ability worked just fine, whether it was to another user with an AIM or Mac ID. She is using an AIM ID. However, there are now 2 users that have Mac ID's that she is unable to receive or send text messages from. If they send her a message, it shows she has an incoming message but she cannot open it. Nor can she send them a message. She can however, video chat with them. I thought at first it had something to do with her having an AIM account and them having Mac accounts, but she is still able to send and receive messages from all other users with Mac accounts.
I have gone through all her settings that I can think of; nothing is blocked. I asked her if she noticed the problem after an update or something like that. She thinks she was prompted to do a software update shortly before the problem started, but she's not 100%. She's on a MacBook running Mac OS X 10.5.8 and iChat 4.0.2 (604).
Any insight into fixing this would be greatly appreciated!

  • IChat using AIM

My friend is in korea. He can iChat with another friend in Mexico but not with me... I'm getting some kind an error. We tired the bandwith limit, etc and nothing. He can chat with Mexico and I can chat with mexico, but I can not chat with him in Korea.
    Please any advise?

This can be caused by a Duplex mismatch,
A duplex mismatch is a common cause of end-to-end performance problems. It is often manifested by a connection that will work at low speed, but drops packets when high-speed flows are attempted (usually with some traffic flowing in the opposite direction). It is due to a failure in the protocol used to negotiate whether an internet connection can have traffic flowing only in one direction at a time (half-duplex) or in both directions at the same time (full-duplex). It is apparent that a mismatch occurs when one machine is set at full-duplex and another at half-duplex. What is not so obvious is that:
    When auto-negotiate meets auto-negotiate, the transmission rate is full-duplex;
When half-duplex meets auto-negotiate, the rate is half-duplex.
In both cases, no problems occur. However, when auto-negotiate meets full-duplex, auto-negotiate converts to half-duplex and not, as you would expect, to full-duplex -– the auto-negotiation capability is programmed to assume half-duplex unless it meets another machine set at auto-negotiate.
If, for any reason, one side believes it is full-duplex, and the other half-duplex, the side that is full-duplex may send packets when the other side is not expecting them, and those packets are dropped. To avoid these problems, a common fix is to always force both sides to auto-negotiate (because most new devices come preset this way).

  • Connecting problems to chat client (iChat, Adium, Aim)

My sister and I each have an apple computer, I have an iBook G4 and she just bought a new macbook. I have been having problems with my laptop connecting to ichat, adium, or aim. With each service I receive an error stating in someway that a connection cannot be made. I thought that maybe I could solve this problem when I set up my sister's new computer, however she has the same problems. iChat just pretends to connect for hours and never does, Adium says, "cannot connect to authentication server, socket disconnected" and Aim always says something to the extent of can't connect.
I know now that this is not a computer problem necessary because both computers are experiencing the same problems. I can use AIM fine on my PC at home and I used to be able to do it on my mac too. Any ideas as to how I can connect to the chat clients? THANKS!

    Hi Tony,
I hope you're reading this...I can't do audiochat anymore. Whenever I try and invite someone or an invitation is sent to me it doesn't connect. I can instant message and chat regularly, but the audiochat won't work. I tried the 443 port and it still didn't work. When I changed the port, it wouldn't connect to AIM at all, so I had to change it to the default settings. Please help!!!

  • Error Message Problem logging in

Having a problem logging into iChat. Gives me this error message "The iChat Agent process has unexpectedly quit, disconnecting you from all service. Logging in again will restart it." I have tried everything I can think of short of completely reloading leopard. Any thoughts??

Delete com.apple.ichatAgent.plist and restart iChat to recreate it from defaults.
It is in Users/(your account)/Library/Preferences which you have to go to Manually

  • Video iChat problem using AIM (Routing through 2nd NIC)

    routing iChat for AIM
I have a Mac Pro with both ethernet cards connected. ethernet zero is connected to my office network and ethernet one is connected to a back channel DMZ. I do not have Access to the office router and it's been configure to prevent chat. I have added routes to the table for ethernet 1and am able to chat through AIM with my wife on the iMac at the house with no issues. However when I establish a video connection it errors out. I've made sure that I have both the initial and establish connection IP's routing through my back channel. But it doesn't seem to work. If I turned off the office LAN, I have no problem connecting using video chat.

as I said I can still chat, I just cannot use video chat unless I disconnect the office network. I need to leave the office network as the default route. Suggestions would be appreciated, not sure if iChat problem or routing problem.

    Umm,
Not so much as a Bug but a feature.
iChat has been designed with a level of security in-built.
When you send a Visible Invite it is just that, away to trigger the other end to pop up a window.
iChat then engages in the SIP part which includes a text based connection method called SIP (Session Initiation Protocol).
This involves a behind the scenes invite and a check to see that the IP the Visible invite went to is the same one the SIP bit ios going to. (remember you can log in as many times as you wanton different apps and computers to the AIM servers), but is essentially to make sure you are connecting to who you invited.
This SIP Process is very much like an old fashioned operator call in that you call the operator they call the operator at the other end who calls the Buddy, he answers his operator who confirms he is willing to chat... etc.
As with a telephone call you want to make sure you are talking to the right person.
Like a telephone iChat has to be in "one place" in relation to the internet.
Unlike a corner plot house it can not have one "number" in one street and another in the side road (even local authorities and postal service ignore this).
The process in other IM apps is mixed.
Skype spreads it's connection over as many hosts as will accept them meaning your call could be using 30 or 40 other end users to spread that load.
Of course this also increases the ports in use giving you less security overall.
Some do seem "better" at ignoring secondary connections the way Web Browsers do.

  • IChat to AIM problems

Recently my iChat has started having connection problems and I don't know why.
I have it set up with an AIM account and very often (but not always!) it won't connect 'iChat can't communicate with the AIM account... The server did not respond'.
When it does randomly connect, it will eventually drop the connection.
I would have thought it to be a problem with the AIM servers, but i have installed AIM since this started happening and it seems to work absolutely fine with the same port setting (5190) etc.
Before anyone suggests port 443 again, i've tried.
I've tried quitting and deleting the iChat p.lists before restarting as others have suggested...
Any bright ideas out there for this miserable problem??
I really want to continue to use my iChat

    Hi,
If you are using MoreiChatEffects some of the Quartz Files were designed under Leopard's Quartz Composer (You get it if you Install Developers Tools from The Install Disk > Optional Installs Folder).
Some are sorted by running iChat in 32 Bit mode. Some remain showing either a Black or White screen instead and few create other issues like reversing the colours despite being in 32 Bit mode.
This is a Developers Problem. They have not kept up-to-date with the OS Releases.
I see nothing on the Site (http://ismileys.free.fr/moreichateffects/ ) to indicate any date reference to the Utility's last build.
    On the Wifi Front.
Channel 9 on my European able Device is near the middle. There can be interference for other routers using a nearby channel. Personally I have moved to Channel 2.
Interferences can also come from Cables in walls, the power "bricks" for devices like peripherals and Laptops, not to mention the router's own one. Also check out Microwave Ovens that are nearby.
At my house I had my router near the front of the house near the front door where I have created my "office" and where the phone Line come s into the building. I had it raised about 4 feet off the ground (just over 1 Metre) to avoid the power bricks.
Where my "office" is used to be a flat roof extension to the front of the ground floor with the upper storey supported by a Steel joist about 2 metres into the building. This joist seemed to cause a problem for the rear bedroom and a PC Laptop that was wireless.
I moved the router to another phone outlet beyond the steel joist. The laptop also left home with my daughter but my son reports no problems now that he uses that room. (I never really found out if moving the router helped with that particular Laptop).

  • Using AIM through iChat

Ok. I've already been using AIM on my iChat, and let me tell ya, it works much better than AIM itself.
Anyway, I was wondering, is there an easy way to put all of the screen names in AIM onto my .Mac account? This way I can just use that account for email and IM.
Thanks for your help! I appreciate it!

This is taken from the ichatav3 help menu:
Click the Add button in the Buddy List window. A list appears, showing cards in your Address Book. Choose the person you want to add to your Buddy List. If the person is not already in your Address Book, click New Person.
If the person does not have an instant message address, you need to enter one. You can enter more than one screen name by separating each with a comma. If your friend signs on using any of the screen names you enter, you'll see them in your Buddy List.
You can also drag a person's name from your Bonjour list to your Buddy List to add that person to your Buddy List. The person in the Bonjour list must have a a valid AIM or .Mac account.
When you add a new person to your Buddy List, a new card is added to Address Book.
Your Buddy List is stored on an instant message server, so you can log in to your account from any computer and see if your buddies are online.

  • How to ichat using bonjour with no AIM account

how do you get ichat to work with bonjour when one user has NO AIM account. This is on a local network in the workplace. Is it even possible? I think it is because I used to work at an Applestore and any computer could chat with any other computer, and I know they weren't using AIM names.

    thanks but still confused.
    I have an AIM account.
I have a window with the title "AIM buddy list"
Both my Bonjour window AND my AIM window mirror my "away" setting. when one says away, the other says away. OK.
But in prefs, there is a setting when the Bonjour account is selected that says, "When iChat opens, automatically log in". Do you have to "log in" to Bonjour. AIM is automatic.
that is now checked in Bonjour. Does sharing or anything else need to be turned on.
There is also a check box to "publish my email and IM address".
In my AIM account, I have to add people to my buddy list. How do you add someone to your Bonjour list.
    Thanks

  • XP SP2 using AIM 6.5 to OS X.4.11 using iChat v3.1.9 (Ralph pls help???)

    Hoping for some help here...
I have an iMac G5 power pc running 10.4.11 with an external iSight. My parents computer is a wintel running XP SP2 with a logitech quickcam orbit MP (USB). I am from OH and they are in FL. Never been able to get video chat to work but figured it was due to their (lack of) technical ability.
I brought my computer down to FL with me this week and set up a LAN using a D-Link 615 router and both computers currently have access to internet through a Comcast cable modem. Using my iChat and their AIM 6 was able to get full AV chat between us. I then mailed the iSight cam back to my daughter in OH who set it up on her Powermac G5 (ppc) running OS X.4.11.
Of course we were not able to get full AV 2-way chat working. The iSight is working on their end (able to see and hear themselves in preview window) the Quickcam is working on my end (able to see and hear myself in preview) but when trying to make the connection between the 2, (with either end inviting) I get a black video screen with no 2-way audio.
Another relative (nearby in FL) has a new Intel iMac 20" with built-in iSight and again, there are similar problems. When attempting to chat with them, regardless of invite direction, neither the video chat connection nor a "buddy talk" can be established.
I have followed previous posts in this forum and have edited the wintel's firewall exceptions scope for UPnP to "any".
Any guidance you can give , aside from "accidentally" destroying the wintel box, would be appreciated.
    Don

    I do have several hammers.
http://www.aim.com/helpfaq/starting_out/getstarted.adp#608 Is what AIM say about AIM 6.5 to iChat in Video chats
You seem to have done the XP firewall.
I take it that any routing device is also using UPnP ?
These pics don't make it clear where UPnP might be
    http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Dlink/DIR-615/iChat.htm
Are the Macs set in System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming to 1.5nmps ?
Restart iChat if you change it.
    Summary.
AIM themselves says this does not work for Video to iChat with AIM 6.5
Change the System Preferences > Quicktime setting
Make sure the ports for the Mac and the PC are open in any routing device. UPnP is best.
As this is Comcast set iChat > Preferences > Video section > Bandwidth Limit to 500kbps

    Hi Syeh:
Is your boyfriend using AIM 5.9?

  • IChat wont let me log out of my AIM

I started a ichat, but i dont want to use AIM. i want to create a new account, but i cant figure out how to log out of AIM. I feel really stupid for asking, but please helpQ

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
iChat 5 that you are using allows you to have several Buddy Lists open at once.
Lets talk about Logging out of one first.
You can do this two or three ways.
    1) Go to the iChat Menu > Accounts and select the Account/Screen Name.
This will remove the tick next to the Name and log it out.
    2) You can also go to the iChat Menu > Preferences > Accounts and un-tick the option box for "Use this Account"
    3) Go to the Buddy List at the point that tells you your status Message.
There is an option in the drop down that appears to go Off-Line
    Adding a new name.
You can get a new name by visiting the AIM web site or by going to iChat Menu > Preferences > Accounts and pressing the + symbol lower left.
If you then use the first drop down in iChat 5 to select AIM then press the Get an iChat Name button you are taken to the AIM registration Page.
If you choose @mac.com then that will take you to an Apple Registration page for an @mac.com name which is also free. (Mobileme also tends to lead to the same place)
MobileMe can also be signed up for on the Apple Web site but registration requires an active Credit card even for the Trail 60 days (you are charged automatically if you do not cancel in time and the trail name will not work afterwards.
    Removing Accounts/Screen Names
In iChat Menu > Preferences > Accounts press the - button when the unwanted Screen Name is highlighted.

  • Trouble connecting Ichat with friend using AIM account on a pc

Hi, I am new to Apple's and Ichat. I am attempting to video chat with a friend, who is using an AIM account on a pc. We have tried turning her firewall off. I am unable to connect with her. I keep getting a communication error. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

First try to connect to the Apple "bot" test servers listed here. Then, at the bottom of that same webpage, there is a list of "real-people" Mac testers. See whether you can work them. That will let us know whether the problem resides on your end (a Mac/router/ports problem) or her end (PC/AIM/ports/exceptions problem). Post back and let us know how things work out for you Mac-to-Mac.
If you can't get ahold of a real people contact tester, I could contact test with you if you want. My setup has worked "out of the box" since day 1. However, I configure my iChat security to only allow people on my buddy list to see that I'm online. So I'd need to know your AIM screen name so I could temporarily add it to my buddy list or you'd never see me online. You would have to email your screen name to me, and a suggested time to try a test. Between 7PM and 9PM MDT works best for me. To get my email address, copy the following line into Terminal.app and hit enter:
    echo 9274185136367780862791258724411398020885770P|dc
To get my AIM screen name, copy the following line into Terminal.app and hit enter:
    echo 502754583644136110388490P|dc
But I'd try the contact testers listed on Ralph's website first -- they probably aren't as limited in their available hours of operation

  • IChat 4: Auto-reconnect, best to use AIM/GTalk or our OS X Server

Hey guys. I have two questions. Our internet has been extremely flaky and it makes it extremely difficult and frustrating to have video chats between our offices. Every time we have a connection error, the session terminates and we get the error message prompting us to send the report to Apple or ignore. Can I automatically suppress this option to send the report and close the window? Or, better yet, could I set up something (AppleScript?) to automatically recreate the video chat? I already have the AppleScript set up to auto accept the video chat invitation when someone tries to contact us, but I would love it if we could set up a script that auto-contacts other people in a video chat.
My second question, which is sort of related, at least to performance, has to deal with the best service to use for chatting. We currently use AIM for all of our inter-office text and video chatting needs. We also have an OS X Server, but it's co-located out of our office. Which would be the preferred network to use, if we're just contacting each other? I would have to think AIM because they probably have hundreds of servers, but they also have millions of users. We would have just a handful at a time using ours. Your thoughts on server preference, especially when video is a priority?
    Thanks!

iChat does not have an Auto Reconnect item as such.
However if iChat is using an External Camera there is a setting in the iChat > Preferences > Video section that says Connect if Camera is On which will do just that.
iChat 4 does have a item for remembering open chats across logins/restarts of iChat.
This is set in the Messages section of the Preferences.
I am not sure if Chax includes and Auto Reconnect feature or not.
    This may help
    tell application "iChat"
    if status is offline then
    log in
    end if
set originalStatus to the status message
    end tell
