Problems Merging Variable Images in InDesign

I'm currently trying to merge text and images to a clients master InDesign file for printed output on our Docucolor. The text is merging fine (when I click the preview button in the merge data tab) but I keep on getting a message pop up to say that pictures are missing or cannot be found. If I proceed to run a merged file InDesign generates a report listing all the missing pictures (which is basically all of the pictures I'm intending to merge / print).
I think the problem lies in the pathnames I'm setting up for each image in my Excel file (which obviously I'm converting to a CSV file afterwards). The InDesign help file shows "\" as separators for Windows and ":" for OSX. My pics are in a folder on the desktop of my Mac but using ":" as separators does not work. If I select an individiual image and do an apple-i the information that appears uses "/" as separators when describing the file's location, so I tried that as well but it didn't work either! I've also tried replacing spaces with "_" in the file names - didn't work.
What am I doing wrong?

I got fed up with how it handled path names a long time ago, just keep the database in the same folder as the images and you only have to put the file name in the database.

• Problem with imported images into Indesign

I have scanned a book as a one bit (B & W) 600 dpi document. I have imported the document into Indesign as i need to integrate some decsreened pics in. I then export the finished document as a press ready PDF and the image virtually disappears off the page and what is left is very distorted. the type is twice as high and about five times wider than the original image.
I have contacted the scanner company and of course they put the issue with the exporting to the PDF.
Can anybody help??

This is bug #2960217 filed by me in September, relating to Indexed over Gray colorspace, also with a Fujitsu Scansnap S1500M.

The scanner that i have used is a Fujitsu Scansnap S1500M.
In short, don't use it in Grayscale (Or BW, I guess) modes. Use it in Color, or make sure to process the iamge in another app (like Photoshop) and save
it with a normal colorspace.

• Cutting out images in indesign, clipping path problems

Hi,
I have been putting images of my drawings from photoshop onto indesign for my portfolio, after looking around the only way I can seem to find to cut them out is using clipping path/detect edges.
The problem I have is because they are scanned sketches this method produces really inacurate and shoddy results and no matter how much I play around with the threshold and tollerance this means I still have to mess around with the pen and arrow tool for ages on each image.
Is there a quicker solution to cutting them out like the magic wand or lasoo tool on indesign?
It has taken days now in in design , I have all the images already cut out from their original pages on photoshop but the white box always comes around again when I drag or place the images in indesign.
I have been shorcutting some pages and doing layout on photoshop and placing the image behind which works fine sometimes but is really inconviiant when I want to move the layout around text ot anything...... i have attatched some pictures to show you what I mean.
Thanks for your help in advance
Leo

Well Thats 2 days of my life Ill never get back!
Thankyou very much! cant belive I was that stupid

• Problem importing image bet InDesign/ Photoshop

I hope I can articulate this well enough.
I'm taking an image from an InDesign document, editing it in Photoshop, then dropping it back in InDesign.
The image is perfectly fine in InDesign, and it seems to be fine in PhotoShop. However, once I edit it and drop it back in InDesign, that's where the problem occurs. The photo now has the white background attached to it, which screws with the background in InDesign. While in Photosho, it appears to not have a background (selecting the entire image correctly only highlights the image itself and none of the background). Does anyone know how I can import it back into InDesign without gaining the white rectangular background?
Many thanks!

How are you getting the image from InDesign and into Photoshop? How did you get the image into InDesign in the first place? Is the image linked or embedded?
Basically, you're doing it the wrong way. You start with a Photoshop file, save it, then File > Place the inGe into InDesign, linking to the Photoshop file. You edit the image by editing the Photoshop file which, being lnked in InDesign, is updated on the fly.

• I am having problems with the image quality when image placing in indesign

Hi
I am finding that many illustrations are pixilating when I place them in indesign from illustrator or photoshop. Some times I can rectify the issue by increasing the size or dpi of the image prior to placement, but I'm sure there must be another way. How can I improve on the quality and definition of placed images in Indesign?

• Merge split image segments

Dear Friends,
in an external PDF all images are splitted to smaller segments.
I heard this is quite common in PDF generation due Postscript.
I am placing this external PDF on an Indesign document page which is also exported again as a final PDF/SWF/JPEG.
But in the final PDF/SWF/JPEG there are white lines visible in the images, when they appear, allways between two image segments.
I heard this is due to rounding errors of position x-/y-coordinates of these image segments rendering them not perfectly onto their intended position.
I think about two general solutions:
Merge all image segments to a complete image.
Being able to position these segments with lock / automatically to make them perfectly edge to each other (but what would be with these rounding errors?).
This is a quite common problem to designers who want to further use the ressources or pages of an external PDF.
Often the senders of those external PDFs have not even got the original data (careless/lost/etc.).
It would be great if there is a reliable, solid solution to this problem.
Thank you for answers in advance!
With best regards
Inno

A naive (but possibly sufficient) implementation could just be to keep a table mapping (x,y) pairs to countries. To keep the table smaller, you could map 10x10 blocks of pixels to countries.
Ultimately this is about storing and then managing data.
One hack (in my opinion) is to check the color of the clicked pixel in the image of the map. But that is nasty for a variety of reasons (such as, it keeps you from being able to easily change the map image, and things like text in the map (like the names of countries) kind of screws that up. But it's an option.
You can also keep lists of pixels in sequence describing a polygon, and then use certain algorithms (which I don't recall right now) to determine whether a given point is inside or outside a given polygon.
Also you can do things like "binary space partitions", I think.
These last two things are computer graphics techniques, and are non-trivial to implement. I dimly recall them from college but recall no details. You can get a computer graphics textbook (which tend to be expensive) to get more info, or these days there's probably a wiki about it somewhere.
But I'd suggest keeping it modular. Add a layer of abstraction, writing an API around this functionality. Then write an implementation with a simple table of locations or blocks of locations, and if this proves to be insufficient later, swap it out with something more sophisticated.

• Merging variable data using data merge plug-ins for In-Design

Has anyone had any experience with merging variable data (such as articles for a newsletter) with either of these plug-ins:
DesignMerge, www.meadowsps.com/site/marketing/productinfo/designmerge.htm
or Pageflex Studio ID, www.bitstream.com/publishing/products/studioid/index.html

Only Pageflex Persona (cut down version of Studio - doesn't require InDesign Server).
Variable stuff is extremely customisable, but design stuff is !@##%. Like Quark 3 simplicity... Customer support is poor in my experience. Program is clunky - they've only just added keyboard shortcuts to access tools... woohoo. Spot colours aren't fully supported - you have to specify them as CMYK and tell your printer to substitute later... you can't design across a spread at all - any two-page graphics have to be placed twice... I could go on!
For a newsletter, I'd just find a way with InD CS5. Maybe with the Copyfit plugin if you want more functionality, but not with standalone software. For complex variable areas in InD, I just create pdfs or separate InD files of the variable area, and list these as you would images in the csv file. The free LayoutZone addon (Thanks Martinho!) makes region exporting very simple - beware of some occasional bugs with strokes changing.
I did a job recently with 36 variables per entry, including 2 embedded InD files. The layout was a 3-fold A4 double-sided flyer, with each 3rd page being a few mm shorter to allow for the fold-in. CS5 multi-page size and 3-page spreads made this quite simple to set up.

• Updating images in Indesign

Is it > really < necessary to manually update images in Indesign when you have changed them? If you have changed a batch can you not just auto update the way you always could in that thing we used to use??
Thanks!

I'm having the same exact problem, except in CS6- probably the same program. I'm updating everything now, I'll let you know how it goes.

• Trouble with re-sizing images/textboxes InDesign CS6

Has anyone had any problems re-sizing images or text boxes in InDesign CS6?
I have been doing it for months by selecting the corners and dragging them in or out but suddenly it's stopped working. The arrow no longer changes to a double arrow when I hover over the corner and all I can see is an hourglass when I hover over any type of frame.
I can resize images only be changing their percentage in the transform objects -> scale options.
I tried re-setting my preferences and it didn't help.
Please advise me if there is something else I can do.

Tried that and it didn't help.
The only thing I can think of is that there is something wrong or slow with my remote desktop connection which is affecting functionality. No one else seems to have had this problem.
Thanks for your effort though.

• [InDesign CS3] Unable to place PICT image on InDesign document.

Hi all,
I am trying to place a PICT type image on InDesign CS3 document but it is being shown disabled in open dialog. And when I drag this image(PICT type) to InDesign document, I am getting an error message "Quick Time and a TIFF (uncompressed) decompressor are needed to see this picture".
Note: This problem is coming on both MAC and Windows.
Thanks in anticipation

When you place content from InDesign, why are you exporting it as JPG?
You can either
save the INDD file and place it directly into InDesign or
export the INDD as PDF/X-4 and place it into InDesign.
This should result in better quality than using JPGs which will be always a loss of crispyness, change of colors, blurry text and loss of quality.

• CS6 Problem - Merge to HDR Pro - "Remove ghosts" Process 2012 ACR7

Hello! I found a problem when creating images HDR of RAW
When using the "Remove ghosts" - the problem is distortion image, clipping highlight and shadows.
File>Automate>Merge to HDR Pro>Sourse files>Browse>OK>Merge to HDR Pro>Mode: 32-16-8 Bit>Remove ghosts - Problem!!!
This is a problem only in the 2012 process ACR7, the process 2010 ACR7 there are no problems.
My system - Win 7 SP1, x64 version CS6.
Sample images:
1. No "Remove ghosts"
- Process 2012 ACR7. No problem, it's good
- Process 2010 ACR7. No problem, it's good
2. EV +2. "Remove ghosts".
- Process 2012 ACR7. Problem - distortion image and clipping highlight.
- Process 2010 ACR7.  No problem, it's good
3. EV 0. "Remove ghosts".
- Process 2012 ACR7.
- Process 2010 ACR7. No problem, it's good
4. EV -2. "Remove ghosts"
- Process 2012 ACR7. Problem - distortion image and clipping shadows
- Process 2010 ACR7.  No problem, it's good

I am having a similar problem with Merge to HDR from Lightroom 4 to CS6.
First of all, here is the dark exposure processed entirely in Lightroom. As you can see there is good shadow detail and no blown highlights:
I
Now here is the image using the darkest and lightest (of 3 exposures) manually blended. Here the shadow detail is naturally better (although it isn't obvious on the small image shown here):
Now here is the image from HDR Pro with remove ghosts on the darkest of the 3 images. As you can see there is very bad (practically no) shadow detail (look at the hillside on the left):
Here is the HDR Pro with remove ghosts on the middle of the 3 images. As you can see the clouds are badly blown/posterised:
And here is the HDR Pro with remove ghosts on the most over-exposed image. As you can see the sky is completely messed up:
Essentially unusable for this sort of image. Hope this gets fixed soon!!

• Placing of an Image in InDesign gets altered with parts cut away...

Hello All,
Here is a weird one that I have stumbled upon and have not been able to remedy. I am working with an image in PS, used transform to distort the image and gave it some perspective. Saved the image as a .Tiff with transparency on.
When I place the image in InDesign it is missing part of the image as if it has been cut away. The image looks great in a browser and in PS. I have bellow attached a screen capture to help visually explain my dilemma. Has anyone run into this problem before and knows the remedy?

There must be a path in Photoshop set as a clipping path. (the path name will show with outlined text). You can delete it or change it to a regular path. You can also use InDesign's clipping path menu to remove it from use within InDesign.

• Refreshment problem when place image.

Hi Experts,
When I insert image using script then there is a refreshment problem.
In place of second image there place first image.
while if I debug this it place in correct order. But in Run case script not place image in order.
There is a refreshment problem After place First image it not refresh and have first image.
How solve this problem That i place image in proper order in Script Run mode.
#target indesign
var myDocument=app.activeDocument; //Active document have 10 spread with text frame
for(int i=0; i<10;i++)
var ImagePath="D:\Indesign\" + i + ".indd";         // There are 0.indd to 9.indd, 10 image in "D:\Indesign\"
var myTextFrame=myDocument.spreads.item(i).textFrames.firstItem();
myTextFrame.place(File(ImagePath)); // ImagePath is path of image
Thanks.

My problem is like this :
I want place image in a text box
File(menu)-->place....-->(Dialog open then Select Image file then click on open)->then image is attach with cursor. (I do not click on .indd open screen).
Now I run the script from ExtendedTool Kit
#target indesign
var myDocument=app.activeDocument;
var myTextFrame=myDocument.spreads.item(0).textFrames.firstItem();
$.sleep(2000);
myTextFrame.place(File("/C/DOCUME~1/ADMINI~1/LOCALS~1/Temp/temp.jpg"));
$.sleep(2000);
var graphic=myTextFrame.allGraphics[0];
graphic.select(SelectionOptions.REPLACE_WITH);
graphic.geometricBounds =["-47.853527","-157.370275","1231.018230","709.576702"];
When this script run then it place the image which I am select from File(menu)-->place....-->(Dialog open then Select Image file then click on open).
Not from the path "/C/DOCUME~1/ADMINI~1/LOCALS~1/Temp/temp.jpg"
This is the problem to place image. So there is image duplicasy and some image missing.
Is there is solution of this problem ?
How remove image which is already attach with cursor ?
Thanks.

• Trying to merge 5 images

Whenever I try to merge 5 images of a chorale, the first four are merged together fine, but the 5th image gets put 'under' the top four...I never had this problem with CS3, so I don't know where to begin to resolve...? Using CS5 12.0.3 on Windows 7, 6G's of Ram..
Thanks so much for your time!!

It's "under" because Photoshop can't find any alignment of that image with the other 4 -- so Photoshop treats it as a separate panorama.
And that's probably because the people moved too much between the shots (you do seem to have enough overlap).
You could manually position it, then run the auto-blending command.

• Problem with variables in formulas when using CrystalReportViewer

Post Author: Aksu
CA Forum: Formula
Hi! I have a problem with variables in Crystal Reports formulas, when using CrystalDecisions.Windows.Forms.CrystalReportViewer class from VS2005-project. ReportViewer always gives error:*************Crystal Report Windows Forms ViewerThis field name is not known.Details: errorKindError in File C:\{dir]}\{file}.rpt:Error in formula <mCustomerAttributes>.'Dim result As String'This field name is not known.Details: errorKind ************* Report without variables works fine with Viewer and in Crystal Reports Designer report with variables works also fine. I have tried with both "formula-syntaxes" - basic and crystal. But Viewer always gives error when trying to define new variable.I think the problem might be with CR -versions, because VS-project has formerly been designed to VS2003 and CR9 or 10. Now I'm using VS2005 and CR11. Though I have changed all references to new CrystalDecisions-asseblies (Ver.11.0.3300.0), when I debug the project and checkout the Viewers ReportSources FormatEngine Shows version CR9_2.... Has anyone been able to answer this question?
I am having the same problem:
I am designing a report in Crystal Reports XI Developer that contains parameters, which are passed to a stored procedure and are also used within formulas ( in Crystal Syntax ie. {?FORMAT_ID} ) in the report itself.
I can run the report successfully in CRXI Developer. The formulas use the correct values from the parameters entered during execution and everything looks good.
I then deploy the report to Business Objects Enterprise XI. I do all of the things necessary to manage the report including setting up the proper database connection information and default parameter values.
When I run the report using the Crystal Report Viewer, I get the following error message:
Error in File Forecasting.rpt:
Error in formula <Report Format>.
'if (not isNull({?FORMAT_ID} ) ) then
This field name is not known.
Details: errorKind
This happens when I press the "Preview" button in the Manage Object dialog from Crystal or when I run the report using InfoView.
I have changed the formulas and it doesn't seem to matter what the specific content of the formula is; other than the existence of a parameter reference in the formula. If I comment out the parameter and replace it with a hard-coded value, it gets through the formula fine.
Does Business Objects Enterprise XI support crystal reports with parameter references in the formulas?
Thanks,
Tim H.
