Problems migrating to a bigger hard disc on Satellite Pro A120

Hi,
I've been trying to upgrade to a bigger HDD (same brand and series) using Drive Image XML. Ive done it this way on other PCs before but it didn't work. I've also tried using WinDD with the same results and Ghost but I don't have SATA support.
I cloned the drive using DiX drive to drive with the replacement drive in a SATA caddy but when I put the new drive in it hangs and reboots during the XP loading screen. I tried making a back up of the old drive from the caddy then loading this onto the new drive. It got to the Windows is starting up screen but no further. I also tried installing both drives in my desktop and doing drive to drive, hangs and reboots.
I thought this might be because the old drive was set to active (both in the caddie and installed in the desktop) but I cannot change this in disk management.
The above methods have worked for my on other PCs so what is special about the Toshiba.
Can someone let me know what I am doing wrong?
Also could someone tell me how to get SATA support in Ghost 2003?

Hello Luke
Can we please clarify one thing at the beginning?
Now when you have built in new hard drive and if you install OS using delivered recovery CD/DVD can you work with your notebook and use preinstalled OS?
BTW: which notebook model do you have?

  • How to migrate to a bigger hard disk?

    Hi,
which steps do I have to follow to migrate to a bigger hard disk?
My question concerns the steps to conserve and restore the operating system and Lenovo's ThinkVantage applications. Is it possible to use an external USB hard disk to create an image of the built-in disk?
I suppose that this is a frequently asked question.
    I have a T61, product id is 6457WFV.

Gerhard,  as wjli2 suggested,  the easiest way to move to the larger HDD is to just create your own set of recovery media (onto a USB drive).  Then remove the old drive, insert the new drive, and boot from the USB drive where you created the recovery.
To create your rescue media, do the following:
    1. Click Start > All Programs > ThinkVantage > Create Recovery Media. In the rescue media area, mark the appropriate radio button for the type of media you will use. You can create rescue media using a CD, USB hard drive, or an internal hard drive.
    Notes:
If you choose to create rescue media on either a USB hard drive or an internal hard drive, then the drive  must have 500 MB of available storage, contain either a FAT32 or NTFS file system format, and have been created using a Windows partitioning utility. Rescue media is created only in the first primary  partition on a drive. If a primary partition does not exist, one will be created. Rescue media cannot be created on an extended or logical partition.
    2. Select a target drive, if necessary.
    3. Mark the Do not destroy existing data check box if you want to make the existing partition bootable
and preserve the contents of that partition. Click OK.
    4. Select a recordable drive from the drop-down menu and click OK.
Note: Only available, recordable drives are listed in this menu.
    5. Insert a blank or erasable disc and click OK. A progress bar is displayed. This process will take some time. Follow the on-screen instructions.

  • Satellite Pro A120-10W - Function keys not working since hard drive wipe

    Hello,
I have a Satellite Pro A120-10W running Windows XP Pro SP3, and have just had my hard drive wiped, because of viruses. Everything seems to work fine, but I cant use the function keys to change the brightness etc. I have looked at various help forums however most seem to give answers for Windows 7 or vista. 7
    Can someone help please?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello
As you can see in other threads, you need special drivers/tools for FN keys to get them working because there is no Windows standard driver for these keys.
Anyway, you have to download Common Modules as Akuma wrote. After installation the keys should start working again.
You can download the tools on official Toshiba website.
If you have problems with installation or it was successful, just post some feedback. ;)

  • Satellite Pro A120 - Second hard drive on secondary IDE channel

    Hello
    I have a Satellite Pro A120 xp sp3.
I've been trying to get it to recognise a 2nd hard drive on the secondary ide channel but it won't. Cd drive has been removed and replaced with one of these, the with the pata to sata interface.
    [http://newmodeus.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_27&produc ts_id=245]
The second hard drive is a seagate sata 500 GB drive. Drive is spinning and recieving power but not showing up in storage management or device manager.
In the Bio's (uptodate) it shows me this but won't let me edit it.
    Drives I/O
Built in HDD = serial ATA port 0
    CD rom = Secondary ide (170H - IRQ 15)
To me the hardware is capable of supporting two HDD's as long as you remove cd drive but it seems like the bio's is locking me out of deselecting CD rom on the second IDE channel.
Please could some one point me in the right direction to resolve this.
    Thanks
    Zander

    Thanks for the help.
Ok I followed what you said and this is what happens.
Uninstalled CD drive in device manager.
boot to bios with out 2nd hard drive in the slot. Bios shows no secondary IDE channel or hard drive
As soon as I push in the 2nd hard drive caddy and boot it says CD error, doesn't show in windows or device manager. Bios shows CD drive again. Also the CD drive is reinstalled in the device manager.
Tried it with original HDD with operating system on it in the 2nd hard drive bay and it won't boot, looks for bootable device but can't read it.
Why does it only see the cd drive! Annoying.
    Any more ideas?

  • Bigger hard disc for Macbook

How big a hard disc can I put into my Macbook as I am thinking of adding parrallels to run Win XP as there are some programmes such as form typer in paperport 9 that I cannot run on the Macbook. I figured to have the biggest disc I could get so as to max out both Mac OSX and XP

For now the form factor 2.5" with sata interface available was 160 GB for the biggest.
There is several brand and there comes with 5400 rpm and 7200 rpm (but don't bother that much if you are in no need for fast access or streaming data.
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/MacBook13inch_HardDriveDIY.pdf
for further instruction, also you need torx screw #.8 for switching the HD bracket.
    Good Luck.

  • Problem when mounting my external hard disc

When I mounted my Western Digital Elements external hard disc to my iMac, a window appeared stating Mac OS could not fix this external hard disc, please reformat it. But I can still access to the content of the HD. Is my HD corrupted? BTW I got this HD for just about a month. Thanks for your help. _Julian

If you right click on the drive in the Finder, what is the Format of the drive?
Further down under Sharing & Permissions what does it say the Privilege is for (Me)?

  • Need help with installing new hard drive in Satellite Pro M10

    Hi All,
My hard disk died in my Satellite Pro M10 so I decided to fit another.
It fits fine in the caddy but just doesnt want to slot into place correctly as something seems to be stopping it.
Does the M10 only accept a certain make/model?
Also does anyone know what the highest capacity the M10 will accept?
    Many thanks.
    Regards
    J

As far as I know there should not be problem at all. Take old and new HDD and compare the connectors. I hope they are the same. I can just imagine the new HD is not placed properly in the HDD bracket. Be sure the new one is placed as old one after removing it from the notebook.
About max HDD capacity there is no precise info and we can just speculate about it. Try to use search option on this forum. Maybe someone already wrote about HDD upgrade on Sat/Sat Pro M10.
The fact is that Satellite Pro is delivered with 30, 40 and 60 GB HDDs. How many GB has your new HDD?

  • 2nd hard drive in Satellite Pro P200

    Hi everyone
    I have a Satellite Pro P200.
Does anyone know where I can get a lead and a caddy to install a 2nd hard drive?

As far as I know your notebook can be upgraded with second HDD if SATA connector is available.
When you remove HDD cover for second HDD can you see it or not?
I have Satellite P200D with place for second HDD but there is no HDD SATA connector so upgrade is not possible.

  • Which Solid State Hard Disk for Satellite Pro L670?

I have a Satellite Pro L670 which I want to configure for presentation purposes and have to re-load the operating system anyway.
Rather than over-write the existing disk, I thought it would be better to get a second one to fit instead.
Replacing the current (old-fashioned) spinning disk with a solid state one seems to me the best way to go.
Has anyone else fitted a solid state hard disk to a Satellite Pro?
For budget reasons I am planning to go for a 120GB capacity which will be enough.
However I have yet to find out from Toshiba what they might recommend. Anyone else yet gone this route?

    Hi
Theoretically any SATA SSD drive should be compatible because the notebook supports an SATA controller.
But in some cases it could be possible that an SSD drive would not be handled properly. In such cases the SDD drive manufacturers provides different firmware updates
So before purchasing an SSD drive check the support pages of SSD drive manufacturers for further details maybe an firmware update would be available

  • Satellite Pro A120 audio problem when played through amplifier

I've been experiencing some problems when attempting to playback music through an amplifier, using a lead from the headphone socket on my laptop connected to the amp's auxillary input: when the laptop is connected, the amp produces static, and a high-pitched hum. Weirdly, this only happens when the laptop is connected to the mains. I don't think it's a fault with my amp, as the laptop, when connected to the mains, also causes interference with the LCD screen I use with it. Is there anyway to resolve this problem? Could it be a fault with the laptop itself, or the power cable?

    Hi there,
The possible reasons for that issue can be:
    - your machine and the amp has differrent ground potentials and/or voltage is inductioned in a mass loop
    - over the screening of the audiocable is flowing a compensation voltage betwenn the amp and the notebook
    - a low DC-voltage were generated on the resistance of the screening which causes the buzzing
The point is that you have to ground or separate the currents of the amp and the notebook.
Its logical: your power outlet is causing a interference so if you connnect both to to it, you have the interference.
Check if some machines are connected to your power outlet which are needing heavily current (e.g. fan heater or what i know what) and disconnect them to see if the interference is going away.
If not, I suggest you to try that which was suggested in your last post.

  • Satellite Pro A120: I have problems with the graphics driver installation for W2k

I have installed windows 2000 on an A120 the system is fully service packed and up to date before I even begin installing the required drivers I am unable to restart the system. Once I install the drivers as recommended I have problems with the graphics driver as it will not install because it requires a restart and then I am unable to install any new programs that require a restart as the driver has not installed correctly.
The laptop is a A120 Pro, 1 week old and came with XP home, because of this toshiba will not offer me support as I have changed the O/S even though they obviously support 2000 on this laptop as they supply the drivers.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

the reason the driver is not working is down to a problem with the windows 2000 not having the ability to reboot.
When you select restart the system appears to power down then stays switched on. Now if I try to install software I get an error saying that the system needs to complete a restart to finish the install of the driver.
The restart problem happens as soon as win2k is installed as although I have now shipped the laptop to the sales team I have another one which has just had a clean install of win2k without any drivers and the fault is present on this one.
I am thinking it could be to do with power management but I'm not to sure as I have never come across this as I normally purchase machines which accept just about any O/S.

  • External Hard disc problem

I just bought a Samsung portable hard-disc (external) but I've run into some trouble.
I don't have a problem transferring files to the hard-disc from my old dell laptop (plug and play), and I can copy the files from the hard disc to my MBP. However, whenever I try to copy files from the MBP to the hard-disc, I get an error messag that goes: "xxx file may not be transferred because "New Volume" (title of hard-disc) cannot be modified.
I tried erasing the hard-disc using disc utility, and that allowed me to copy files from the MBP to the hard-disc. However, after doing so, my dell laptop couldn't detect the external hard-disc. I then formatted the hard-disc and gave it a disc-path on my dell, but when I did that, I got the aforementioned error message when I tried copying files over from my MBP to the external hard disc.
Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

The reason your Mac couldn't write to the disk initially is probably that your Dell formatted the disk as an NTFS volume (most Windows disk are formatted as NTFS these days). OS X can read an NFTS disk, but cannot write to it.
When you erased the disk with Disk Utility in OS X, it's likely that you reformatted the disk as an HFS+ volume (most OS X disks are formatted as HFS+ these days). Unfortunately, Windwos cannot read or write HFS+ without some third party software.
    You have two solutions available.
First, you could use Disk Utility (or the Windows equivalent) to format the drive as a FAT32 partition. Both Windows and OS X can read and write to FAT32. However, FAT32 is a bit of an outdated standard, inferior to both NTFS and HFS+.
The other option is to keep the disk formatted as HFS+, but use third party software to work with the disk in Windows. Google "Macdrive" and you will find some nice software for this. The downside here is that you have to buy a third-party program. However, HFS+ is far superior to FAT32, and at least you can try out Macdrive for free before deciding to pay up and go this route in the long run.

  • FCP X does not recognise my hard disc for storage

I run all my applications of a 120 GB SSD and replaced my DVD drive with a 1 TB hard disc for storage. This is working very well with all my applications apart from FCP. FCP simply does not recognise my hard disc as a place for storage, although it has no problem recognising it as a source to import from.
After doing some research on other forums, most commonly this problem is due to your hard disc having a typical "camera picture name" like "IMG_001" or "DCI_001" etc. for a folder at root level, thus FCP thinks the hard disc is a camera (for import) but not suitable for storage.
I have been messing around with this for days now, and would really appreciate some help.
    Thanks in advance
p.s screen shots of typical infomation attached
    - Duddleif is the name of the SSD
    - Kjell is the name of the 'missing' hard disc

Instead of using older OS X CD/DVD install to a new drive.
Where is your backup and clone?
Buy some drives! that is a must.
Pick up a FW case, you will need it to put the old drive in, and later, so you have an external and off line drive for backups and maintenance.
A copy of TechTool Pro 4/5 and Disk Warrior (DW first).
    SuperDuper to clone your drives.
Demo of Prosoft Data Rescue 3 to scan the drive once you have a system and you put the 'dead' drive in FW case.
Then do backups and preventative maintenance on a very regular basis and have at least two backup sets.
If you have been doing that, and know and have read those instructions in the past....

  • Problem in restore software and files from time machine to new hard disc

hello, recently im just change my macbook's hard disc, and i can't open any of my software and also the finder is keep no responding after i restore my files and software from time machine. Got any solution about it?

I see. Don't do that. I do not believe using Migration Assistant is a valid method of accomplishing what you intend.
Furthermore, unless you are using the "Enter Time Machine" feature, you really shouldn't pick and choose what you want to copy from a Time Machine backup... "no user serviceable parts inside". You can certainly find and individual files and folders in the Finder, but you will run into the permissions problems you describle. I would not attempt to circumvent those protections.
As I understand Time Machine, you must either restore a volume from a Time Machine backup, thereby erasing the volume first, or restore individual files and folders by using "Enter Time Machine" when the backup has already been properly designated for the source.
Since your replacement hard disk - the source, now - is technically new, the latter is not an option. It's as if you were trying to restore to a different computer. This can't be done.
