Problems moving applications to the trash

I'm having trouble with moving some items from my harddrive to the trash. I get the message that the item cannot be moved to the trash because it is "owned by the root". Does this sound familiar to anyone? I'd love to figure out what the deal is and how I can detete these files. Thanks!

Use Terminal to ...
Force-delete an item from desktop or Trash....this also will remove a locked
file/folder and a “file that is in use”
1. Launch Terminal...type/copy/paste...space after rm
sudo rm -rf <space> ..this deletes file or folder
sudo rm -R <space> this deletes file or folder
2. Drag the offending item into the Terminal window. The path to it will appear.
•To force-delete more than one item from the trash....click a item and press Shift or Command as you click additional items .
3. Click on Terminal window, press Enter
4. type your administrator password. Press Enter
5. Click on the Desktop or the Trash window and the file will vanish.
Note.. If you attempt the above again within five minutes, step 4 are not required.
• If this does not work, then visit The XLab FAQs ....

    Please take these steps if you're prompted for a password when moving items in your home folder to the Trash.
    1. Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/.Trash
    2. Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Show Info
    from the contextual menu.* An Info dialog should open.
    3. The dialog should show "You can read and write" in the Sharing & Permissions section. If that's not what it shows, click the padlock icon in the lower right corner of the window and enter your password when prompted. Use the plus- and minus-sign buttons to give yourself Read & Write access and "everyone" No Access. Delete any other entries in the access list.
    4. In the General section, uncheck the box marked Locked if it's checked.
    5. From the action menu (gear icon) at the bottom of the dialog, select Apply to enclosed items and confirm.
    6. Close the Info window and test.
    *If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Open a TextEdit window and paste into it (command-V). Select the line you just pasted and continue as above.

  • Moving mail to the trash icon does not delete the mail.

    I am using an iPad with OS Ver 7.0.2. Moving mail to the "Trash" icon does not delete the mail from the Inbox. This is not a problem on my iPhone. Settings are the same on both devices

    First thing to try is a reset: hold the on/off button and the hold button at the same time until the iPad completely shuts down, then turn back on.
    May not work, but often resolves simple app issues.

  • A third party soft crashed. I removed the application to the trash, I got rid of every preference, cache and so on (easyFind to fide hidden files). When I reinstall it, it shows the beginning of the license text for 5 seconds and closes automatically.

    A third party soft crashed (Episode). When I reinstall  and relaunch it, it opens the window showing the licensing instructions, but only for a few seconds, not allowing me to go further and enter the license number. I did put the application to the trash and remove every trace of it (preferences, caches and even hidden files using EasyFind), zapped the PRAM,  I ran Onyx and disk utility, and reinstalled. And it is still the same. Anyone have an idea ?

    As I did this a few times, I tried using Uapp and AppTrap. Just the same. My version of the soft is not an updated one, but the same works well on my office machine, with the same OSX snow leopard.

  • Problem with moving items to the trash

    Whenever i move items to the trash, i get a pop up window that asks me to type my password because "Finder wants to make changes". when i type my password, the item is moved to the trash but automatically is cleared from the trash, so when i open the trash there is never anything in it.
    Although my trash folder is clean from items, I still running out of hard drive space as if the trash hasn't been cleaned at all
    It all started happenning when switched to OSX Lion.
    How can I solve this problem?
    Thanks
    Aner

    Go to ~/Library/Preferences
    Move the com.apple.finder.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Trash.
    Restart your Mac.
    Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you have a minimum of 15% free disk space.

  • Tried to drag a progam to the trash but each time I did a window pops up and say that i cant moved it to the trash as the application is open.. the program i wish to uninstal is a pre-paid mobile broad band a

    I tried to drag the program i wanted to uninstal to the trash but each time i try a window pops up and tells me i cant as the application is open and i know it,s not??? the program i want to uninstal is a pre paid mobile broad band,  thank you Marie
    I have tried going to the  program it self but no where can i find how to uninstal it . I,m getting very frustrated with  this C.P  as at least  with windows you went straight to the control panel and went to ADD/Remove, and clicked onto the program you wanted gone and clicked on it and it uninstaled . GRRR

    I assume that the app didn't come with an uninstaller application/script?
    If you definitely want to trash it have a look in Activity Monitor and your Login items, as there may be something running in the background that is preventing it being trashed.
    System Preferences>Users & Groups (or Accounts depending on OS), Login items tab and delete anything that pertains to the app you want gone.
    Next, Utilities Folder>Activity Monitor, have a look to see if there is anything running with the name of the awkward app. Select it and click on the the big red 'quit process' button. Now try and trash it.
    If you are still having trouble you could try downloading the free AppCleaner:

  • Can't drag applications to the trash

    I downloaded a beta test recently, now it's finished I have the folder sitting in my Applications folder, but it won't let me drag it out into the trash. I've logged in as an Administrator, changed my regular ID to have Admin status, none of it works. I've got the CCleaner app from the App Store, same issue. It tells me I need to be an Admin to uninstall files, but even when I log in as the Admin, it gives me the same message.
    Any thoughts please?
    Thank you, James

    maybe try deleting via terminal
    sudo rm /Applications/name of app press return afterwards
    please be careful in using this command, do it wrong, everything will be gone

  • Iphoto keeps moving photos to the Trash

    I installed the latest version of Iphoto 11...When I initially installed it a large portion of my photos were moved to the trash...I have moved them back multiple times but everytime I shut Iphoto down it puts them back in the trash...Very frustrating...
    Any help would be appreciated

    Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
    Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Moving files to the Trash with Automator

    I'm having some problems with Automator, and I'm hoping it's just a simple step I'm missing.
    I have a list (text file) of a group of files I wish to remove from a folder (about 650 or so files, from a folder of about 8000). I have been able to get Automator to read the text file, and show me the result.
    (Ask for Finder Items (Files & Folders), Combine Text Files (Text), Filter Paragraphs [Return Paragraphs That Are Not Empty] (text))
    This results in showing me my list of files I wish to remove.
    I don't quite get how to pass this list on to the Finder to tell it to select these files, and move them to the trash.
    Any assistance would be appreciated.

    Since your text file just has the names, an action is needed to build the complete file path. Most of Apple's text and file actions don't use variables, but a Run AppleScript action can be used to fill in the blank. Give this workflow a try (I haven't tested it with a large number of files, so I don't know how slow it will be):
    1) Ask for Finder Items {Files} -- choose the text file
    2) Combine Text FIles
    3) Filter Paragraphs {Return paragraphs that are not empty}
    4) Run AppleScript -- paste the following script:
    <pre style="
    font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;
    font-size: 10px;
    font-weight: normal;
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 5px;
    border: 1px solid #000000;
    width: 720px;
    color: #000000;
    background-color: #FFEE80;
    overflow: auto;"
    title="this text can be pasted into an Automator 'Run AppleScript' action">
    on run {input, parameters} -- build file paths from a list of names
    set output to {}
    set SkippedItems to {}
    set TheFolder to (choose folder with prompt "Select the folder containing the files:") as text
    repeat with AnItem in the input
    try
    set AnItem to (TheFolder & AnItem)
    get AnItem as alias -- test
    set the end of the output to the result
    on error
    set the end of SkippedItems to AnItem
    end try
    end repeat
    if SkippedItems is not {} then
    display alert "Error with AppleScript action" message ((count SkippedItems) as text) & " items were skipped (file not found)"
    end if
    return output
    end run</pre>
    5) Move Finder Items to Trash

  • Finder wants password when moving anything to the trash

    Suddenly, today, my Macbook running 10.8.1 no longer allows me to move items to the trash. When I attempt it, I get a "Finder wants to make changes" dialog box asking for a password. Entering the password deletes the file completely; it's not in the trash. Can anyone help me please/

  • After last Moutain Lion update, suddenly and sporadically I cannot move my files using my mouse.  I only get a "ghost" image.  Moving items to the trash is, of course no problem.  Does anyone have a solution?  I've updated my permissions...no go!

    Cannot move icon files using my mouse or cursor after installing Mountion Lion's last update.  After rebooting several times, this sometimes fixes the problem.  I've tried checking and updating my permissions, but this hasn't worked.  What's happening?  I haven't backed up so I can't go back to Lion.  Has this happened to anyone else?  What can I try?  Thanks!

    Try this:
    Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
    Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
    When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Now download and install OS X Mountain Lion Update v10.8.3 (Combo).

  • Moving applications to the Media Card

    I have a Blackberry 9300 3g curve. Whenever I download any application it ets stored in the phone memory, I have all my media files and the photos stored in the Media card.  How can I move the applications such as games, themes etc. to the media card storage.

    Hi and Welcome to the Community!
    You cannot do as you desire. To function, all applications must be installed to the protected AppMemory space. There is no alternative.
