Problems on MacBook Hard Disk

I have a problem of my MacBook. My Mac's hard disk free space is getting smaller and smaller, but i haven't saved new things, download stuffs nor upgrading any of my software. It seems that every time i switch it on and surf the net with safari or just switch it on and do nothing, the capacity of my hard disk will decrease. I have been seeking for help almost two weeks, it is really difficult to know what is going on to my MacBook. Help please.

Hey,
Did you manage to get an answer? Are you deleting internet temp files? Some time ago I had the same issue when I started using Veoh Web player.
It seems that software saved the downloaded video information and, of course, the free space began decreasing.
Not sure whether this answer may help you but, who knows? :-))
Kind regards

Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again.

  • Startup problems -- not finding hard disk

I have a g5 iMac that is several years old (pre-Intel). This morning, my husband went to use it. He said there was some iDisk synching error (I've been getting those on my MacBook Pro, too) and then the cursor turned into the rainbow and he rebooted. Upon rebooting, the question mark folder started flashing and the computer wouldn't boot up. It's definitely having a problem finding the hard disk. I've started it up with the Tiger Install DVD but when I get to Disk Utility, the only thing that shows up in the lefthand column is the DVD drive with the Install DVD Is my hard drive fried? Of course it's never been backed up. Is there anything I can do from home or do I need to lug it into the Apple Store? Please help!!!
    TIA,
    --abby

Here's Apple doc.#58042 in case you need it; flashing ? mark.

  • Macbook hard disk problem??

    Hi all,
My macbook crashed and i had to restart it but since then, although it turns on, it doesnt boot. The screen lights up and i get the apple logo but that's all. I ve done the PMU, PRAM resets but nothing changed. Does this mean that my hard disk is gone? Has anyone else had this problem before?
    Thanx for the help
    G.T.

    Hi -
Try booting up from your install CD (hold 'C' at startup with disc inserted) then launch Disc Utility from the top menu. Verify the disk for problems, repair permissions and hopefully all goes well.
If you can't boot up with 'C', try holding down 'Option' until you're presented with a choice of the CD or your still existing drive.

  • MacBook hard disk failure - nothing retrievable

My MacBook fell off a guitar amp the weekend before last. It carried on working for the rest of the day without any problem, but after I shut it down, I was unable to boot it up again the following morning. It couldn't get beyond the grey screen and spinning wheel.
I took it to a Mac reseller/repairer who, after keeping it four days, reported that the hard disk was dead and because it was a mechanical failure, nothing was retrievable.
I've come home with a new hard disk fitted, but could really have done with retrieving some of my files from the old hard disk.
Does anyone know if this "nothing can be retrieved" diagnosis is correct?

You could put the bad drive in an external enclosure and then download Data Rescue II and see it it can find files to retrieve. If it can, then buy it for $95 (I think) and maybe you will retrieve everything you need. It worked for me on a drive that was otherwise un touchable.
The way I look at it is this; you will not be out a dime to try this procedure. The reason I say so, even though you have to buy an external enclosure, is that if you had already owned an external enclosure with a drive in it you would not have be in this predicament. You could have used it for an ongoing backup of your regular drive. So, if you were to buy one now, and also buy a good drive to put in it, you won't have this problem again. Otherwise you will likely experience it again some day as most people do experience a HD failure at some point,
Data Rescue II is free to try to see if it is going to work for you.

  • MacBook hard disk upgrade - any concern?

After installing Leopard, I found that my 2GHz Core Duo MacBook original 80G hard disk is really not enough for the OS plus my usual apps (Final Cut Studio, Photoshop, iWork, iPhoto), they took up more than half of my HD space. So I decided to get a 250G hd for my MacBook. Then my friend @ the computer store told me the early MacBook can't use anything larger than 160G! Is that true? I just don't wanna spend those extra $ for GB that I can't use.
    Thanks!

It can use the 205 GB with no problem. Some people get confused because at the time your MacBook was made the 160 GB drive was the biggest one you could get installed by Apple. Thats because it was the biggest one available at the time. It was not a limit of the MacBook but a limit of what apple sold. You might have your friend that works at the computer store to hang out here on the forums he might learn something about Macs:->

  • Problem ejecting external hard disk

i've an 80gb external hard disk that i use frequently with my macbook, and i haven't had any problems with it until a few days ago.
everytime i finish using my hard disk and want to turn it off, i'm unable to eject it thru finder or just by ctrl+click on it and selecting eject. if i do by that method, the whole computer just freezes and i'll need to hold on to the power button to shut it down.
i've even reinstalled my system TWICE to try to solve that problem until recently, i discovered a way to workaround it, which is to fire up disk utility and select the disk to unmount it.
is there anyway i could do to solve my problem here? it's quite a hassle to launch disk utility all the time for such a menial task. :/
P.S my external hdd has 2 partitions.

yes i have. on both partitions, and disk utility found no errors in both of them at all.
i've even formatted one of the partitions again.

  • MacBook hard disk never stops

My MacBook (Late 2008, 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) running OS X Lion (10.7.5) has a hard disk that will not stop running lately, even during sleep.  I have a Time Capsule using Time Machine and have iCloud running with iPhone 5 and 2 iPads in the house.  However, this has never been a problem before.  When I have the MacBook running on battery in the house, the batteries even run down in less than 2 hours due to the hard disk and fan constantly running.  Also, it seems to be affecting the speed of the wifi internet access and of the Time Machine backups.  Any ideas please?

Or is Spotlight scaning the data on the disk?
Even it is doing the scaning, it could have been completed and stop. Have you tried to do the Restore for your iPod?

A message will tell me "Files can not be saved, can not be saved to this file name, use a different name or save this file in another folder"
But if I use \\192.168.0.1 connect to network hard disk.
And do same thing to save file.

    Hey YaoTingHuang,
Please try saving any other PDF file to the same folder location and check if the same message appears.
Let me know what happens if you disable protected mode under Edit> Preferences> Security (Enhanced) and uncheck 'Enable protected mode at startup'
    Hope to hear from you.

  • Problems with partitioning hard disk

Hi, I have an external hard disk with 2tb capacity.
I want to create one partition of 1,5 tb to use with Time Machine and one partition with 500 gb to use both with windows and mac.
I have partitioned the first one in HFS extended and the second one in exfat, using the GUID partition table.
Now the problem: on the mac both the partitions work well.
In Windows, on the contrary, the exfat partition is not recognized. It says it is to be formatted a nd if I try to format it (in windows) it says it is not able to do this.
I don't know what is the problem, even if I think it can be in the GUID table used...

I think you can have only one OPTION for the partition table map scheme which is for the entire drive.
So, when you created your two partitions (1.5GB Mac OS Extended - Journaled format and a 2nd for the rest of the space as ExfFat format) you chose the partition table map scheme as GUID, Windows will not see either partition. For Windows to see the ExFat partition, the partition map scheme has to be Master Boot Record.
I have never formated two different partitions like you and made the partition table map scheme Master Boot Record. I know the PC will see the ExFat partition, but I don't know if the Mac will see the other. Understand you won't be able to boot from the Mac formated partition since the drive is MBR. Try it! You will need to reformat the drive with your two partitions when you change the partition table.

  • Scratch Disk Problems - Too much hard disk space?

Now, here's a question for scratch disk problems. My photoshop (7) used to work (on my old computer), now I've re-installed it and it says it and windows are paging to the same location, and I can't open it because "Scratch disks are full." I know there are lots of questions like this, but this one is special. I believe the problem is I have 1.5 TB of hard disk space, which apparently is too much and causes problems (?). Anyway, I would change the scratch disk location but I can't open photoshop in order to do so. Any suggestions?
Basically, is there a way for me to change scratch disk locations if Photoshop won't even open?
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Changing the location won't do anything nor will resetting the prefs (sorry Manish-Sharma). You really need to physically downsize the partition to be below or around the 500GB ceiling. It's unavoidable as this is inherent in the old file I/O API that those programs use. Changing the scratch disk location would do nothing as long as the program partition is stil lthat large and throws the program through a loop. open your drivemanagemnt by using My Computer --> Right-click --> Manage --> Disk Management and split the partition or whatever.

  • MacBook hard disk just died

Guess what? After suffering from the worst case of RSS, which led to two logic board replacements, after one palm rest, keyboard and trackpad area replacement due to discoloring, after all that suffering and lost time, after suffering from the huge quantities of heat produced by the MacBook which letd to a crack in the 100% wooden desk I put it on, I now, yes me, get a question marked folder when I start my macBook. Aparently the hard disk just died!
I tried everything, there's no way any application from the MacOS Disc 1 becomes aware of the hard disk's existance now, it's just gone forever.
It really makes one think about the quality of the parts used to make the MacBook and recent Apple hardware.
I know I'll go next week to the Apple rep to ask for the disk replacement that will take some time to get here (and surely they will send me the same 60Gb when they do send it) and then reinstall the whole thing.
I just wonder what will come off next??
    Best,
    Pedro
MacBook (Week 20, Replaced LogicBoard twice), White 1.83Ghz Core Duo, 2Gb   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Also: PowerBook G4, Airport Express, iPod Nano

Yeah they will change it, but to my point again, what will come off then? and will it be on warranty when that happens? And what about my lost time, files, work, money, life?? —This is getting to my nerves the guys at the Apple shop are like: Hmm, here comes the MacBook guy again!?!?!
I didn't drop it, I treat it like it's my baby. It just died there sitting on the desk.
What kind of crappy hard drives are they putting in this machines, that last just seven months?
Is this the next RSS, behold the new HDDS (Hard Disk Dying Syndrome!)??
    Best,
    Pedro

  • Macbook Hard Disk Swap Woes

I recently purchased a hitachi 7200 rpm 200 gig hd, when i placed it into my macbook rev C (2.0 core 2 duo) the laptop ran at 150 degrees according to istat pro. This was at idle! I used an external enclosure and carbon copy cloner to clone the hard disk then simply replaced it. I decided to use this drive as a time machine drive and got an Apple 160gb Fujitsu drive from OWC. I cloned it and installed it and again, 150 degrees. I doubt that I am installing it incorrectly as each time i replace the stock drive the temperature returns to 108F at idle. What am I doing incorrectly? Is there a firmware update I have missed?

Hey inducedaphonia and welcome to the forum -
During your switching process, are you moving the EMI shield from the old (original) drive to the new one? You'd be using a Torx T8 to do this. -GDF
