Problems opening MacBook Pro since loading OS X Yosemite
Hi,
last weekend I attempted to upgrade my OS to Yosemite. I started the process from the download available on the Apple website. On starting the process the system indicated that the download would take about 22 minutes. The process was much slower than 20 minutes as 1 hour later it was still not fully downloaded.
It eventually got to a point where it indicated 2 minutes to completion, but as it had taken a long time to get to this point (and it was 12 midnight), I left my Mac on overnight, and when I got up the next morning, the system had not moved on from where I left it the night before.
I eventually gave up and terminated the process. I re-opened my Mac, for it to open successfully, and it looked that the software had in fact been updated.
However, it appeared that in fact it had not been uploaded, so I re-tried to upgrade Yosemite, this time the process went much smoother, and I carried additional steps to install the new OS, including setting up data encryption.
I thought that I had finally been successful in loading the new OS software. However then, it takes at least 4-5 minutes to open my Mac. Earlier tonight, I had an attempt to open which was stuck for 30 minutes plus before I had to terminate it.
It now seems clear that either I have not loaded the software correctly, or I have some underlying problem with my Mac. I don't know if this is the result of a flaw in the OS software loaded, and in order to move forward, I need to go back to OS Mavericks, and then reload Yosemite.
I am asking for professional advice on how to resolve my OS software problem.
The time it takes to download the Yosemite installer is dependent upon both the speed of your connection and how many other people are trying to download things from the Apple servers at the same time. You tried to download the file (5.17GB's worth) shortly after its release so you probably had a lot of competition. Even though you left your Mac "on" when you turned in, did it go to sleep or did you find it still up and running (rather than waking up) the next morning?
In any case, once it finishes downloading, the installer app will open but wait for you to initiate the actual installation. Indeed, that's the right time to make a copy of the installer because once the upgrade is finished, the installer deletes itself, and if you needed it to reinstall Yosemite, you'd have to start the download all over again.
The time it takes for the computer to boot (is that what you mean by "open"?) should be quick, not 30 minutes, so something isn't right. I'd suggest booting into Recovery Mode and running Disk Utility to repair your startup disk. Let us know the results.

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list. Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

Okay i looked them up and YES they are compatible with macs. if it's formatted for windows then no it will not show up on the mac, you need to repartition it on windows or try and see if you can pick it up in Disk Utility on osX. This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:

I have been using a Lightroom 5 including recent upgrades on my Mac Pro laptop for the past 1 year. This was purchased as an upgrade from Lightroom 4 for which I have a serial number. Today I purchased a new Macbook pro and loaded my Lightroom 5 however it is asking for my serial number which I have misplaced. I am unable to trace my serial number anywhere. I have even checked my adobe membership to locate my serial number but it does not seem to have any record which is strange as I have been using this software for over a year now and the previous versions since 2009. Could someone help me in my predicament.

Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.

To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.

Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax. It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.

This, Adobe Flash Player 12.0.0.70, is the current version of Flash. It should work with Snow Leopard or later. -
Cs5 Brush cursor problem, on MacBook pro, tried the latest update, and the genious dude had no idea of what to do! Apple any fix?
Additional Info - after working on this problem for 4 hours, I shut my laptop in frustration and took a break. 1 hour later I opened my mac and the cursor had magically returned. No restart, no power on/off - nothing. Frustration. If anyone else has had this happen and has actually fixed the problem let me know. I'm sure it will reoccur.

There are a number of similar topics in this forum over the last few days. There are indications that this problem may be caused by a rootkit infection.
Google "scan for rootkits" to find if your machine is infected. -

Have you opened Disk utility and formatted it? Most new HDDs come formatted for Windows, not Mac.

In the "Arrangement" tab of "Displays" system preference, you can drag the display pictures to match the actual arrangement, drag the menu bar to the other display, or enable mirroring. -
What is the problem on MacBook Pro retina 15"?
I just bought a new MacBook Pro retina 15". After unboxing, I turned it on and there was no any problem. But the second time I turned it on and charge battery, I got 2 problems, 1. The machine made noise loudly and 2. The charging is not working. What is the problem on MacBook Pro retina 15"? However, after about 1 hour, it works normally. Should I still use it or sell it before it has more issues?

i just bought a new Macbook Pro and loaded all my info from My old Macbook...now i can't remember for the life of me my Admin Password (which i created 3 years ago)...is there ANY WAY to bypass this on my new Macbook Pro and begin again...?
I assume that you don't have the installation discs, so:
1. Reboot
2. Hold command + s key down after you hear the chime.
3. When you get a text prompt enter in these terminal commands to create a brand new admin account (hitting return after each line):
(Type these commands very carefully)
mount -uw /
rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
shutdown -h now
4. You will go through the setup process again, create a new admin account, login to it and then change your existing account password or whatever else you need to do. You can delete the account you made in this process, or not.
