Problems opening Pagemaker 7 document

Hi, I need some help with a Pagemaker 7 document that a client in America has supplied to us here in the UK. When trying to open it in InDesign, InDesign crashes during the "Converting Regular Spreads" stage of the import.
Firstly let me say that we've never used Pagemaker before, and this is the first Pagemaker document that we have come across. Now, although the client says it is a Pagemaker document, can someone confirm that a .PMD file is a Pagemaker 7 file?
Our client assures us that it is made in Pagemaker 7. I have no way of checking this.
The .PMD file is 76Mb and is a 224 page US Letter product brochure with embedded photos and drawings. I have a pdf of the brochure, so I can see what is in it. We need to re-typeset the whole brochure and so need to open up the Pagemaker file and extract all the images and text.
Is there someone here that is experienced with converting Pagemaker files who would be willing to help us and take a look at this file to see if they can open it? I have it on our ftp server as a 30Mb .ZIP file and can send a link to download it.
I really would appreciate anyone's help with this.
Thanks, Tom.

Bob, I love it. The client has opened up the PM document and realised that they do not know where all the linked graphics are - apparently they are scattered all over their network and servers. He says that he cannot un-embed them without having to tell PM where the originals are... and he simply cannot find them!
So, we have abandoned that way forward and he is making a press ready pdf for me from which I will extract all the images via Acrobat, then I will copy all the text out of the pdf and re-create the 224 pages from scratch in InDesign.
Thanks for your help, Tom.

  • New problem opening Pagemaker files with InDesign

I have quite a lot of archive files made in Pagemaker 6 and 7 and now use InDesign CS2. Until recently I could open pagemaker files from InDesign then save them as InDesign files and away I went.
But now I am just getting an error message saying the document is damaged and cannot be recovered. First off I thought it really was a damaged document but then realised all my old .pmds were saying the same.
Is there a known issue maybe with a recent upgrade of InDesign or something?
I would really love to be able to access my old pmds!!
    Thanks in anticipation.

Yes Joel you're right - XP and recently installed SP3.
Just pondering the best way forward.
I'm responsible for the IT for a small charity with 8 staff members.
I have Master Suite CS3 and use a variety of the programmes but the other staff members are only using InDesign and MS Office.
We're not a high end design set up but producing all the sort of leaflets, posters bits and pieces that we need day to day.
Decided to upgrade to Office 2010 and to do that I had to install SP3.
Stuck with ID2 for everyone else (and went to great lengths to buy some extra licenses to do so) because opening an ID2 file with ID3 creates a new file which is a big nuisance and it's expensive to upgrade across the board (even with charities having access to educational licensing concessions).
Fact of life is we do tend to have quite long-lived files and I will go on wanting to open pagemaker ones for some time to come.
I probably only want to convert a pmd once a month I guess - it's just suddenly a huge nuisance not to be able to do those few ...
I can't roll back to SP2 because of Office 2010.
I could re-set one workstation wtih XP2, Office XP and InDesign CS2 purely to be able to convert pmds. Again, nuisance and ties up a licence on a little-used machine.
I could bite the bullet and move everyone over to InDesign CS3 - will I definitely be able to open pmds from there?
Ah, just thought - I have an ID3 licence but not loaded on my computer. If I load that and use it just for opening pmds then export them for backwards compatibility with ID2 like this http://livedocs.adobe.com/en_US/InDesign/5.0/help.html?content=WSa285fff53dea4f86173837510 01ea8cb3f-6d4d.html will I then be a happy bunny?
Would be glad of expert comment before I start faffing about!
    Thanks

  • Can't open Pagemaker 6.5 files in ID CS2 - Vista

I was running ID CS2 on a Windows XP Pro system and had no problems opening Pagemaker 6.5 files. That system recently suffered a processor demise that affected the motherboard and forced me to start over with a new system that's now running Vista Home Premium. All of the programs I use loaded fine on Vista except Pagemaker 6.5. When I try to load it, I get a message saying it's not compatible. So I thought, OK, I'll simply open the Pagemaker files in In Design as I've done in the past and resave them. However, every file I've attempted to open gives me an error message saying the files are damaged and can't be opened. I know none of the files are damaged because I'd recently opened many of the same files in Pagemaker before the other system crashed. BTW, all of the Pagemaker files are on external drives so couldn't have been affected by the crash.
Any ideas how I can get around this?

Thanks, Bob. I have another issue that I can't find any specifics on in the forum.
Do you know why Arial Narrow fonts aren't available in the InDesign or Photoshop font list? I've always used these fonts with no problems in XP Pro, but since going to Vista, they don't show up. They're listed in the Windows font folder. The only one that shows up in InDesign and Photoshop is Arial regular. Arial Narrow shows up and is available in Word and other programs but not Adobe.

  • Pages will not open a Pages document

I made a Pages document on my computer at home (iMac 10.4.8) and I am wanting to open the same document on my computer at work (eMac 10.4.10). I get a message simply stating that the document "could not be opened." Why will my document open in Pages on one computer and not on the other? I have iWork on both computers. Any help will be appreciated!

There shouldn't be a problem opening a Pages document with the same major version number but different sub-numbers. But, you can't open a Pages 3 document in Pages 1 or 2 or a Pages 2 document in Pages 1. In Pages 2 there is an option in the Save dialog to save as iWork '05 (Pages 1) & Pages 3 has the option of saving as iWork '05 or iWork '06.

  • I am having a problem opening pdf document.  I get error message: "Adobe Reader has stopped working"

I am having a problem opening pdf document.  I get error message: "Adobe Reader has stopped working" then I get Windows is looking on line for a solution, but then my document closes. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Adobe Reader XI, rebooted my computer but this did not help.  I get the same message. What to do?

Can you open Reader by itself?  If so, check if disabling Protected Mode improves the situation [Edit | Preferences | Security (Enhanced)].

Can you open the Preview program without loading a file, like by itself?
If it doesn't load then I suspect a corrupt Preview preference file.
Deleting the System Preference or other .plist file
Can you open other files with Preview, like jpg's and images?
How about other PDFs? or is it just that one you have downloaded?

    Every time Firefox opened

How about if you right click on the PDF and select Save Link As..., and then open it locally from within Reader? Does it work ok then?  That might be a workaround until the issue within the browser is resolved.

  • How do I open a .pmd document created in Pagemaker in InDesignCC?

How do I open a .pmd document created in Pagemaker in InDesignCC?

You don't. Support for Pagemaker was dropped after CS6, but as a subscriber you can still download CS6 and use that to convert the .pmd to .indd.
Pagemaker conversions can be anything from very nearly perfect to completely useless, depending on the original document. For a short doc I would probably just rebuild from scratch.

  • Problem to open a *.ppt document

    Hi,
I got some problems to open a PowerPoint document in a content area where a file url was added.
The result is a SSO Error.
I can save on the disk the document and then I can read it, but I cannot open it directly from the web page. This problem does not appear in all cases. For certain computer, it works.
I find it very strange and bizarre.
If you got a solution and reason why it does not work, please help me.
Thank you in advance for your help.
    Sincerely yours.

    hi farouk,
if this works on some machines and some others are causing problems this will most likely be a browser problem. could you compare the browsers (and versions) used on the different machines. maybe it helps to delete the browser cookies and delete the browser cache. if this does not help the exact error message would be helpful.
    thanks,

  • Problem opening Office documents from KM

Hello, I have some problem opening Office documents from KM.
We stored a lot of office documents (Excel, Word ecc.) in a File System repository (the standard repository "/documents"), when I open one of these files, before to view the document, a little logon window appears, it asks portal user's credentials.
If the user presses the "Cancel" button the logon window will be closed and the document showed, but on the next attempt to open an office file the system will asks again the user information .
If the user gives the right information the documents will be showed and the logon window does not appear again..
How con I avoid the logon request for each Office document in my repository?
    Any suggestion??
    Best Regards

    Thank you a lot Brad!!
We use Office 2003 and the note 549610 solves our issue!!

  • Problem with opening a Numbers document

I have a problem with a Numbers document, which I created 3 weeks ago and step by step extended with additional functionality. I'm not anymore able to open the document. I can rename the document and maybe - I didn't try - delete the document. But when I'm clicking on the file's icon, the error message appears "Tabelle kann nicht geöffnet werden". It seems that the file is defect but how I it be revived. What steps I have to do to re-open the document?

Check out that thread if you find it helpful. There are some cool ideas there.

    Hi chasore,
Are you still facing this issue?
Is this issue happening with all the documents you have. If yes, i would suggest try uninstall and reinstall. Or if the documents are located on some shared drive try to copy them on local machine and test again.
