Problems opening word files with Word 2011 from a Windows 2012 server volume

Here is what we are seeing. Open any Word document on our server with Word 2011 (mac) results in an excruciating delay. Even a  simple one page document will take over a minute to open up. The same document opened from the desktop of the mac opens in
2 seconds.
In troubleshooting this I turned on invisibles for my mac and watched the folder on the server where the file resides. Here is what I noticed.
1. If I open that file from a windows computer there is an invisible temp file created for the file that disappears when I close the document. The file opens on the Windows 7 machine with Office 2010 very quickly (2 seconds)
2. If I open the file from my mac with the preview of Word 2016 the same temp file is created and the file opens very quickly. (2 seconds).
3. If I open the file from my mac with Word 2011 it takes over a minute and I don't get a temp file on the server. Closing the document takes just as long.
So, what I am guessing is that Word 2011 is trying to create the temp file, tries for a minute, and finally gives up and opens the file anyway. When I close the file I am guessing it is looking for that temp file and finally gives up after a minute and closes
the file anyway.
Any insights as to what is going on would be appreciated. Our users are very frustrated with this situations.

Hi,
Since the issue only occurs to Word for Mac, I'm not familiar with the mechanism how it opens a file, we mainly supports Office for Windows in this forum. Please post the question in Office for Mac forum for further assistance:

  • Opening a file with FILE_SHARE_DELETE mode (Only on Windows)

    Hi,
    We have an application that imports logs from several 3rd party vendor's applications. Basically what we do is import the logs in real time, i.e we do have a live FileInputstream connection to the log file. Now, when the 3rd party applications that rotate these logs (many of them do when they grow big or scheduled periodically), all unix flavors dont see to have any problem, while the windows does complain that the device or resource is busy and the original application is not allowed to rotate it. When i dug into the native code of windows jvm, i found that the file is not opened in the FILE_SHARE_DELETE mode and only with FILE_SHARE_READ and FILE_SHARE_WRITE modes. When we wrote a separate C++ application the opens a file with FILE_SHARE_DELETE mode, we found that the logs are rotatable.
    Now, how can we instruct the JVM to open a file with FILE_SHARE_DELETE mode? Is there any such implementation already or do i have to come up with another class extending the FileInputStream and use a totally different open method where the file is opened with this mode in the native code?
    Thanks
    Manava

    Hello,
    I think you can write :
    Runtime.getRuntime().exec("start.exe " + MyFileDialog.getDirectory() + MyFileDialog.getFile());
    So, "start.exe" choose the application (not valid for NT machine), ".getDirectory()" return the PATH and ".getFile()" return the NAME.

  • Migration from Small business server 2011 standad to Windows 2012 Server Standard

    Hi everyone,
    I have a network with SBS 2011 standard (that is the only server) and now we are moving (migrating) to windows 2012 server standard with an exchange 2013 (not yet installed).
    The main thing is that when trying to install the migration tool on the SBS server, it will not install because it is not a 2008 R2 server.
    is there a workaround for this problem?
    I Hope this will help. Amir Ovadia

    Hi,
    Would you please first let me know how did you perform the migration? Regarding the migration tool, is it the Windows Server Migration Tools in Windows Server 2012 R2? Since you need to install
    the Windows Server Migration Tools on the source SBS 2011 server, I suggest we could perform the following steps to install it.
    Create deployment folders for ource computers by running the
    smigdeploy.exe tool (included with Windows Server Migration Tools) on your destination server.
    Register Windows Server Migration Tools on source computers that are running Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2008, or Windows
    Server 2003 by using SmigDeploy.exe.
    For details, please refer to the following article.

    In addition, here are some similar threads about how to perform the migration from SBS to Windows Server 2012 Standard, maybe they are useful to us.

    As there is no specific documentation on migrating from SBS to Windows server 2012, if you want the step by step procedure about the migration, we’d better involve

  • Open Doc File with Word via Remoteapp

    Server 2012 with RDS. We publish office to some client pc's that do not have office installed locally. Is it possible to associate office files like doc, xls and so on so that when the user clicks to open an office file, the file will use the published office

  • Problem opening pdf files with Adobe Reader in Windows 7

    I bought a new Dell (Inspiron 5110) with pre-installed Windows 7 Home Premium (Version 6.1 SP1, 64 bit) and pre-installed Adobe Reader X (10.1.1). I cannot open ANY of my old pdf files with the Adobe reader (even after I re-installed the Adobe Reader). On another computer with Windows 7 I get the same error message. When I installed several other pdf-readers (Sumatra, Foxit, ..) I can still not open the pdf's -- but all the pdf's still open under Windows XP on my old computer and they also open on all my colleagues' non-Windows 7 computers. So it appears to be a Windows 7 problem. The Adobe error message says 'Adobe Reader could not open _.pdf because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (…..).
    N.B.: I can download pdf files from the internet and can then open these 'new' pdf files with Adobe Reader X.
    N.B.2.: Most of the 'old' pdf files are scientific articles downloaded from various journal websites 2002-2011, so their quality should be out of question.
    N.B.3.:I've transfered the files via memory stick and portable HD.
    N.B.4.: If I try to open the pdf's via 'Open with' the problem remains the same.
    N.B.5.: When, on my Win7 Dell, I've uploaded/attached one of these old pdf files to an email the rtecipient could not tead it. But he could read it when I'd sent the same file from my old Win XP computer.
    N.B.6.: I have repeated this last observation: When I upload an old pdf file on my Win7 Dell to my email account and then send it to myself, I cannot open/read it on my Win XP (nor on the Dell, of course). Although the file size is precisely the same.
    N.B.7.: When I download a new pdf on my Dell, then upload/attach it to an email also on the Dell and send it to myself, I can download and read the attached pdf on both computers.
    Would be grateful for any suggestions.

    This is really strange.
    Please correct me if I am wrong, but from what I can understand, any PDF which is launched on your Win 7 OS fails to open, even though the same file works perfectly fine on your Win XP machine?
    Could you please run a full system anti virus scan on the said PDFs that are present on your local system. It could be a case of infected PDFs.
    Also, it would be great if you could try and download some of the erroneous PDFs from the web again, and see if you experience the same behavior.
    Thanks
    Ankit

  • Opening a file with its filename from a servlet- avoid buffer to cach files

    Hi,
    I am building an URL with the following code and calling that particular file from this servlet using request dispatcher. When I am geting alcCode from getParameter method then it is not caching the pages
    but when I am geting the same through a session value it starts caching the page after cirtain number of requests and shows up the previously requested file.
    I guess it is because it always names the file with the package name.
    for example if my package is sree then the file opened is named as
    sree[1].pdf. Please help me solve this problem
    alcCode = req.getParameter("alcList");
    HttpSession userSession= req.getSession(false);//if request is from //submit action from a FORM
    String alcCode;
    alcCode = req.getParameter("alcList");
    System.out.println("request.getparameter alcCode "+alcCode);
    if (alcCode==null){
    alcCode= (String) userSession.getValue("alcCode");
    //else get the alc code from the session that has been stored
    Calendar todaysDate=Calendar.getInstance();
    int selectMonth=todaysDate.get(Calendar.MONTH);
    int selectYear=todaysDate.get(Calendar.YEAR);
    if(selectMonth <10)
    //selectMonth = InvoiceDate.substring(1,i-8);
    urlPdf="/reports/RPTS"+selectYear+"0"+selectMonth+"/PDF-FORMAT/E"+selectYear+"0"+selectMonth+"_"+alcCode+".PDF";
    }else{
    urlPdf="/reports/RPTS"+selectYear+selectMonth+"/PDF-FORMAT/E"+selectYear+selectMonth+"_"+alcCode+".PDF";
    res.setContentType("application/pdf");
    res.reset();
    res.resetBuffer();
    res.setHeader("Content-disposition","attachment; filename" +urlPdf );
    System.out.println(urlPdf);
    try{
    ServletContext sc = getServletContext();
    RequestDispatcher rd = sc.getRequestDispatcher(urlPdf);
    rd.forward(req, res);

  • Problem opening jpeg file after saving it from photoshop

    I have been using Adobe Photoshop Elements 4 for years and have had virtually no problems.  Today I edited a picture from windows "my pictures" file and after editng it in photoshop, I renamed it and saved it as a JPEG back to the original file.  It came in a an unopenable file.  What is wrong.  Just to note, recently I updated my Norton and used a Norton tech, who took conrol of my computer because of certain issues. She deleted some programs and I am wondering if certain drives were affected.  I reinstalled my Photoshop Elements 4 from my softward CD in hopes that would make a difference.  It did not.  What could be the issue?
    kphoto editor

    I did it...  I figured out the problem.  Incidentally, there must have been some formatting changes in photoshop that took place since I last used it with success.
    The steps I now took.  I opened up one of my JPEG picture files, opened up one of the pics with photoshop, edited it.
    1. Clicked save as
    2. The box came open as to where to save and I saved as JPG file plus I checked the "as a copy" box clicked OK/save
    3. The next window that came up was the JPEG option box and I checked the "Preview box" and save
    4. A window came up in photoshop asking if I wanted to save (the edits on the original) I clicked no because I wanted to keep the original as is.
    5. I closed out of photoshop and there was my edited picture in "my pictures"
    I am so glad that I got this all worked out.  Thanks to all of you who tried to help me.

  • New problem opening Pagemaker files with InDesign

    I have quite a lot of archive files made in Pagemaker 6 and 7 and now use InDesign CS2. Until recently I could open pagemaker files from InDesign then save them as InDesign files and away I went.
    But now I am just getting an error message saying the document is damaged and cannot be recovered. First off I thought it really was a damaged document but then realised all my old .pmds were saying the same.
    Is there a known issue maybe with a recent upgrade of InDesign or something?
    I would really love to be able to access my old pmds!!
    Thanks in anticipation.

    Yes Joel you're right - XP and recently installed SP3.
    Just pondering the best way forward.
    I'm responsible for the IT for a small charity with 8 staff members.
    I have Master Suite CS3 and use a variety of the programmes but the other staff members are only using InDesign and MS Office.
    We're not a high end design set up but producing all the sort of leaflets, posters bits and pieces that we need day to day.
    Decided to upgrade to Office 2010 and to do that I had to install SP3.
    Stuck with ID2 for everyone else (and went to great lengths to buy some extra licenses to do so) because opening an ID2 file with ID3 creates a new file which is a big nuisance and it's expensive to upgrade across the board (even with charities having access to educational licensing concessions).
    Fact of life is we do tend to have quite long-lived files and I will go on wanting to open pagemaker ones for some time to come.
    I probably only want to convert a pmd once a month I guess - it's just suddenly a huge nuisance not to be able to do those few ...
    I can't roll back to SP2 because of Office 2010.
    I could re-set one workstation wtih XP2, Office XP and InDesign CS2 purely to be able to convert pmds. Again, nuisance and ties up a licence on a little-used machine.
    I could bite the bullet and move everyone over to InDesign CS3 - will I definitely be able to open pmds from there?
    Ah, just thought - I have an ID3 licence but not loaded on my computer. If I load that and use it just for opening pmds then export them for backwards compatibility with ID2 like this http://livedocs.adobe.com/en_US/InDesign/5.0/help.html?content=WSa285fff53dea4f86173837510 01ea8cb3f-6d4d.html will I then be a happy bunny?
    Would be glad of expert comment before I start faffing about!
    Thanks

  • Office 2013 hangs when saving files to local profile locations on Windows 2012 server

    We installed Office 2013 a few weeks ago instead of Office 2003 on a Windows 2012 standard terminal server. We installed the last updates and Office is up-to-date now, but we experience problems with saving word, excel and powerpoint documents when we start
    a new/clean document. It's not possible to save our documents to the local profile (desktop, documents etc.), but it's no problem to save our stuff to a network share on a different server.
    Word is not responding after pressing save or save as and after a few seconds we see the 'microsoft is looking for a solution and will restart microsoft word'.
    We did a complete reinstall of Office 2013 and removed the old installation with the removal tool from the microsoft website, without luck. We have the same saving issues with Office 2010, so it's not an Office 2013 issue.
    We were looking in the access/rights on the terminal server, because we thought that it was an access/rights issue. But unfortunately we have the same problem with an domain admin user.
    I tried to disable DEP and my AVG 2012 antivirus, but this steps are also not the issue.
    I'm looking for a solution and i'm working on this case for a few days now. It gives me a headache when i'm thinking about a clean installation of this server. So please contact me when you have a solution or a tip to solve this problems!
    Thanks!

    Hi,
    In regarding of the issue, it may be caused a lot of reasons. Please check to see whether the following link is helpful:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921541/en-gb?p=1

    Then Office hang when saving the file also may be caused by a printer installation.

    research.

  • Problem opening PDF files with Preview

    Occasionally I get this message when trying to open a PDF file in an email attachment:
    "it may be damaged or use a file format that preview doesn't recognise"
    However, when I open the same attachment on my iPad, using GoodReader it does open, so the file is not damaged.
    The issue seems to be with Preview and started recently (after new Mac updates maybe).
    I don't want to post the PDF file here since it's company property.
    Any suggestions ?

    Back up all data.
    This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
    Step 1
    If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
    Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
    sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -N {} + -type d -exec chmod +x {} + 2>&-
    Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
    You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
    The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
    Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
    Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
    from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
    Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
    Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
    Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
    Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
    Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Using Word files with audio on a PC

    I was wondering if it were possible for one to use Word files with recorded audio from a Mac on a PC? I'm not sure if it is possible at all, but if somebody knows how to extract the audio, it would be a great help. I used Word 2008 for the Word files.
    Thanks

  • Why can I no longer open .doc files with Word2011

    I can no longer open .doc files with Word 2011.  .docx files are not a problem.  Everything stops responding as soon as I try to open a .doc file and I have to do a manual reboot (by holding the power button down).  This seems to coincide with my update to Mavericks OSX.  I have Word version 14.3.9.
    A colleague of mine is having the exact same problem.
    I tried repairing my disk permissions but this didn't help.
    Please advise.
