Problems playing a mpeg-file

Hello,
years ago I had substandard films digitalized and put on disk.
Now I thought I could take bits from those films and make it into a short movie using iMovie...as a little Christmas surprise for the family.
But not only can't I open the file in iMovie, I also can't open it with Quicktime, nor with VLC. Can someone help me solve this issue?
Down below you see a screenshot with the 4 folders of the disk and the contents of each of them. It even shows the Quicktime symbol...but when I try to open it a small screen opens and it says "convert". Shortly after that the player tells me it cannot open the file.
Thanks for your help.

  • HT3775 Why won't Quicktime play a .mpeg file?

I have a .mpeg file and can not get it to play.  I am so frusterated!

Try installing Perian. It helps quicktime play lots of different formats.
Or, try VLC. It plays lots of video formats.
mpeg isn't one specific format. The video can be encoded in lots of different formats and still be called an mpeg. You have to find something that can play the particular codec that was used to encode the video.

  • Won't play my mpeg files

I have two mpeg files exactly the same as my others except that they for some reason won't play in quicktime. They work in w.m.p and are in a format that quicktime recognizes so does anyone know why they won't play. One of says 'quicktime does not recognze this format' and the other says 'cannot open because of bad file name'. They both should work. Is there anything I can do?

QT seems to insist that mpeg files conform exactly to the mpeg standards. Assuming that they are both mpeg-1 files they should play and if they do not there is nothing much you can do to correct them. QT does not play mpeg-2 files without the purchase of the Apple mpeg2playback component. I mention this because sometimes mpeg-2 files are named with a mpg extension but not otherwise identified as mpeg-2. One last matter is that the mpeg2 playback component only plays program streams, not transport streams.

  • Problems adding an .mpeg file to IDVD

I recently combined 2 mpeg files into one and would like to add this one .mpeg file to my IDVD. Each time I do, I get an error stating: Unsupported File Type: broken reference in...
The file works fine for viewing in quicktime. Is there a way for IDVD to reconginze this .mpeg file as one and not 2 individual files?
    Thanks

I had the same problem at one time. I re-encoded the mpeg files using iSquint to an mp4 format. My settings were, "Optimize for TV, Quality=Go Nuts, and H.264 Encoding."
I've had no problems since. Hope this works for you.
    Good luck!

  • Audio won't play on MPEG files from camera?

I'm having issues with my new video camera. I want to use my final cut express to edit the videos, but the audio on the video files won't play. The videos play just fine, just no sound. I've turned the volume all the way up on my mac, but still nothing.
Any suggestions to make the audio work?
(I'm not the most familiar with computers, so simple/specific instructions would be best)

You have to separate out the audio and video tracks (referred to as "demuxing") of an MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 file before you import it into FCE. Try MPEG StreamClip to convert the MPEG files into an editing format (DV Stream, for instance). If your camera outputs MPEG-2, you'll also need the MPEG-2 Playback Component.
    Hope this helps.

  • Why my quicktime player can't play an mpeg file

I have a quicktime player that goes with snow leopard mac-os, but this does not play with an mpeg file dvd

QuickTime X and QuickTime Player 7.6.6 can't play MPEG-2 formats without additional software.
DVD Player should be used, instead.

  • Ipod Touch:  Does it have problems playing Apple Lossless files?

    Hi All
This might sound like a strange question to some of you but considering the hassles I am having with the 120gb classic it isn't.
To make a long story short my 120gb classic cannot play Apple Lossless files properly. Essentially they crash the ipod because the files are too large. I have done some research and on many forums people are experiencing the same problem.
I do find it quite offensive that Apple do not have the courage to admit this is a problem but there is nothing I can do about it.
So my solution is to get rid of my 120gb classic and move to a Sony or Cowon player (still doing research to make sure they can handle lossless (not apple) files).
However i really do love everything else about the ipod so I would love to find a way to keep it.
I figure maybe the new ipod touch's might not have this problem because they are solid state and if that is the case then I can stump up for one of those and keep with the ipod brand.
Does anyone know if the Touch's can deal with these large files? Apparently the problem with the old 120gb classics was the small 64mg cache. Hopefull the Ipod touch doesn't have this issue.
Anyway any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Eddie

If I went with an Ipod touch it would be a newer so I guess it would have the newest OS on it.
I'll wait awhile longer and do some more research before I take the plunge because I do not want to get ripped off like I did with the 120gb Classic.
Thanks for the reply though. At least it is leading into the right direction!

  • Problem playing an swf file created in Bridge

    Hello everyone
I have created an web gallery using Bridge and tried playing a swf file containing the slideshow with no luck. When I double-click the file, it open an Adobe Flash Player window but a spiral appears at the centre and just keeps turning. Because my intention is to upload the swf file to a website, I really need to get the file to play the slideshow.
Has anyone succeeded in making a standalone swf file using Bridge or any other Adobe product? If so, please let me know how to.
    Thank you,
    Pom

    Henk,
I'm not on 3.0 so I can't help you out, but I would suggest re-posting on the Enterprise Administration portion, perhaps it'll get more notice there for a resolution.
    Thanks,
    John

  • How do i disable QT so that WMP plays all mpeg files?

I continue to play with the preference under "file types" for both players, but I cannot fix this. Whenever I click on an mpeg link, it plays in quick time. I want it to play in WMP without having to uninstall QT everytime.
Does anyoen know how to fix this?
    Thanks

Whenever I click on an mpeg link, it plays in quick time.
In your QuickTime Preferences, click on the "Browser" tab, and click the "MIME Settings ..." button. Expand the MPEG ... entry and uncheck all the MPEG entries.
    Is that of any help?

    Back up all data.
Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    defaults delete -app Safari WebKitOmitPDFSupport
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Quit Safari. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear below what you entered. You can then quit Terminal. Test.

  • Problems playing flash v2 files with JMF 2.1.1

    Hello,
I'm having troubled playing a flash version 2 file. I have a simple player that is able to play any file supported by the JMF api but flash.
    Somebody can helped me, please?
    Thanx!

I wouldn't spend much time worrying about it. Flash 2 is a dead format, and neither Sun nor Macromedia have any strong interest in providing updated support.

  • Problem with reading mpeg files from Sony DCR-SR100 30GB Handycam

I just purchased a new Sony DCR-SR100 Handycam.
I can upload successfully to my desktop (PowerBook G4)via a USB cable.
I have all the latest updates for iLife, iMovie, Final Cut Pro and Quicktime. None of those applications will open the imported mpeg.
When trying to import the file to the iMovie application I get the following error message:
"The file could not be imported. The file M2UOOOO4.MPG can't be imported; Quicktime couldn't parse it: -2048"
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Igor,
    welcome to the  board
... hm, sorry to say, but:
iMovie is a video edit app meant to work with firewire connected miniDV camcorders
you try to teach the old dog new tricks... just one kind of mpegs can be handled with iM, that is mp4, imported via iPhoto6 (some stillcams can record a kind of "movin' images"...)
sooo, you need to convert your stuff...
mpegs are meant for playback only, they are a delivery format (thanks, Lennart, for this phrase).. editing/processing such files, needs to demuxx them => 3rd party tools...
there's a very good and free solution:
    Streamclip (free)
not using a miniDV camcorder, you miss the convenience of the iApps...

  • I only get audio when I try to play a MPEG file

When I try to play a movie I get a green screen with audio and no video.

  • Front Row: problems playing WMV files

I’m running a Macbookpro OSX 10.5.7, and have been working to config Front Row to play the movies on my hard drive (not in iTunes). I’ve installed both flip4mac and Perian in order to play all file types. This works great for QuickTime and the web. Front Row, however, has a problem playing my wmv files (all others play fine). When a wmv file is selected in FR, it only plays for a few seconds, then stops and returns to the movie list. I researched the solution provided by VideoDrive, which works, but I prefer to organize my videos into subfolders by category, rather than all in an alpha list in iTunes.
If I play a wmv in it’s entirety in Quicktime, it will then play in Front Row. This tells me it’s some sort of cache issue? My attempt to test this theory has been inconclusive, prob due to my ignorance.
    Troubleshooting to date has been:
Quitting FR from the Activity Monitor
    Deleting user/library/preferences/com.apple.frontrow.plist
    Uninstalling and reinstalling flip4mac
    Installing Perian
Would prefer not to have to rip all of my video to mp4 (I use iSquint), but I’m out of ideas.
Apologies in advance if this is covered elsewhere.
