Problems re-installing Leopard after hardrive reformat

My hard drive had an invalid sibling link and it was about to be passed on to another user. I decided the easiest way to fix the problem was to reformat and do a fresh install. I decided to be thorough and used a seven pass erase. I let that run overnight and we I tried to re-install this morning I ran into some problems. The installer can't find a disk to install on. I went to disk utility and found that my drive was not mounted. I tried mounting it both through disk utility and terminal. It fails both ways. I tried running verify and repair disk through disk utility and they fail instantly. I decided to reformat one more time this time just doing one pass. A few minutes into the process a gray screen pops up telling me to restart my computer. I went through the same process several times and nothing works. The drive still won't mount, repair, verify, or anything else. Is their away to force the drive to mount or does anyone have an idea what could be wrong?

Not too long ago, my hd went south on iBook G3. Now fwiw I used this link:
http://www.powerbookmedic.com/Take-Apart-Repair-Manuals-p-1-c-258.html
and put a new one in. What was of interest is that I had similar problems as you. After some time getting into the machines hd, I noticed that the hd pins were not plugged in uniformally all the way. Basically it was askew at one corner. Field decision: plug in properly or put new one in? New one in.I didn't want to do twice. Anyway, it works with new hd and old hd got tested and was fine. I believe I was a little rough on machine at times and jolted the old hd. Plus if you do yourself, you will have extra screws leftover. The case on mine is a drag to crack open and redo. I never priced a tech to do this. Would I do again? Depends solely on cost. On my machine it took me 2-3 hrs, but then I wasn't in a production shop.

  • Still can't install Leopard after...

After reading post thread ID#1667234 same MacMini specs. I have a used late 2006 with current firmware...
    Model Name: Mac mini
    Model Identifier: Macmini1,1
    Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
    Processor Speed: 1.66 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per processor): 2 MB
    Memory: 1 GB
    Bus Speed: 667 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: MM11.0055.B08
    SMC Version: 1.3f4
    Serial Number: G87243UBW0C
I can't tell about the RAM issue, I'm assuming it would have the original RAM because of where it came from. I don't know if it is able to be opened anyhow. I have plenty of room left 42GB.
My hard drive passes verification and so does the password verification.
Any ideas how to get this installed? Wipe hard drive first?'
If so, how do I do it?

Boot with the install disk, holding down the D key (should say so on your disk) launches the Apple Hardware Test program. Run it at least twice, using the extended tests. That checks out the RAM. If your installed RAM passes, then download and run Rember. Once the RAM's been cleared, reboot with the install disk, holding down the C key, select your language, then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu and repair the disk. If it passes, then you can erase and reformat the internal HD. Note that this wipes out the current data, so make a bootable backup/clone onto an external HD (preferably FireWire) and test it before continuing, then after erasing the HD, use the Erase & Install option to install Leopard and migrate from the backup/clone.

  • Re-installing Leopard after installing Snow Leopard?

I recently installed Snow Leopard, but want to re-install Leopard instead without losing all of my current data (Applications, folders...aka everything) - is this possible?

First, note that above I said: "final step is to do an erase and install of Sno." Where I said Sno, I meant Leo.
You can do your reinstall of Leo more simply than I mentioned before. What I was am trying to do is to give you the best chance of moving back to Leo successfully without having to reinstall your apps. What I was going to tell you about is complex.
To avoid the complexity, here is what I recommend. Make the Sno clone I mentioned before for safety and to have easy access to your data for future drag and drop. Now, just do an erase and install of Leo on your internal drive; reinstall your apps by hand; and drag and drop you data into the appropriate folders on your new install.
If you don't want to reinstall your apps by hand, then I'd recommend that you go the more complex route I started describing. I am hoping that you don't have so many apps that you won't choose the more complex procedure. I apologize for the confusion I probably have created. Just let me know which way you would prefer to proceed.

  • Not possible to install Leopard after HD-exchange

My HD crashed, the new one (Seagate momentus 7200.2 160 GB sata2 8 mb gfor) is already inside the MBP. But it isn´t possible to install Leopard! "You cannot install Mac OS X on this volume. To enable installation on this volume open Disk Utility menu and repartition this disk as GUID Partition Table..." I have tried to repartition the disk, but nothing happens. What can be wrong?

When you use Disk Utility to repartition the disk--and this will erase everything on the disk, but I assume you don't care since it is new--you need to click the "Options..." button in the partition pane and select the GUID option. Otherwise, it will just repartition it the same way it is currently partitioned, which you've noticed isn't very useful.

  • Problem with installing again After Effetcts

I downloaded OS X Mavericks recently and I have not been able to use After Effects since then. So I uninstalled it and I tried to install it again, but it is like I have never deleted it in Creative Cloud and I cannot manage to do it... What can I do?

    Hi DrJD,
I'm assuming that you are unable to install Adobe after effects from creative cloud desktop. if so, please run adobe cleaner tool and clean adobe after effects.
    Adobe cleaner tool:  http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cscleanertool.html.
Once you clean After effects from cleaner tool, you can install it again from creative cloud desktop.
Do let us know if it works.

  • Weird problem while installing Adobe After Effects CS 4. Help me!?

I am trying to install the Adobe Creative Suite 4. Every thing works fine except the installation of After Effects and Illustrator. The problem is that I can't even select (check) the After Effects option from the custom install option of the setup. All the check marks are normal except it. But surprisingly when I see the payloads folder where all the files and setups of the software are, I can see all the files required to install After Effects are normally there. Why isn't the setup installing it then? Or at least why cant I check mark the After Effects installing option from the setup? Has anybody experienced such issue? Screen shot attached.

I am sorry for not providing the details. I present them below now:
OS: Windows 7 Service Pack 3
Processor: Intel Core i3 2nd Gen
    Memory: 4 GB RAM
    Graphics: Intel Integrated HD Graphics
Thanks for taking time to read my question, now please provide me a solution I will be much grateful to you.

  • Can't install Leopard After installing Linux

I installed Debian on my power book G4 for a work project knowing I was going to buy Leopard and install that any way. Having finished with Linux I purchased Leopard but I can't get any further than "You nee to turn of your computer" screen that comes up after a few seconds of reading the ROM. I have tried trashing the Linux build with dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda bs=4k count =100 which trashes the Linux image but does not help me install. Can anyone suggest anything as I want my apple back

Have you tried forcing the notebook to boot from the optical drive by holding the 'C' key immediately after starting the computer? (Obviously you must put the disc in too.) Hold the 'C' key down until the grey Apple appears, then you can release it. Getting the computer started, holding the 'C' key and popping the disc into the computer all at once can be a handful so sometimes you have to power down the computer and start it a second time.

  • Problems with TV Shows after a Reformat

A couple of weeks ago I needed to reformat my laptop, so I used iTunes to back up all purchased content to two DVDs before deauthorizing the machine.
Once I'd completed the reformat and reinstalled Windows and iTunes, I inserted the first Backup DVD and restored all of my content then did the same with the second. All of my iTunes Store music works perfectly after re-authorizing, however trying to play any downloaded TV show that I had restored causes iTunes (or QuickTime for that matter) to hang and crash without an error message. Any other videos imported since the reformat play fine, just none of my purchased TV content is working.
Any help as to why this is happening or how to resolve it would be greatly appreciated. Also I'm copying the TV shows back to my iPhone now and will post an update as to whether they work on there shortly.

Copying the TV shows to my iPhone seems to have fixed them on my laptop too. Problem solved.

  • Problem with installing programs after the new update.

I am having a problem with mounting downloads. I tried installing a download and in the dowload manager it says the disk could not be mounted about 2mins later i get a warning telling me the device is not configured. I had the same problem as everyone else not being able to get past the frozen screen. I resolved this using the disk utility on the install disc. I am wondering if this had something to do with my mounting problem. I would love some help.
    Macbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Others have reported the same experience, so you're not alone. The consensus seems to be booting into safe mode and mounting from there.

  • Problems with installing leopard over snow leopard

Have a Leopard store bought DVD and want to use it to install over a current install of Snow Leopard, 10.6.2 - but when I use the installer, and the machine re-boots to run the install, the screen is just grey and blank, forever. Any ideas?

You can't downgrade a system this way. The only way to downgrade is to do a full backup and then and Erase and Install. And if the machine is a new one which came with Snow leopard installed, you can't downgrade to an earlier system by any method: the hardware won't handle it.

  • Problems re-installing LeanPrint after system restore

How do you do this? I had to do a full system restore on my laptops, and now I cannot get leanprint to work. I get the error message that "This Adobe LeanPrint license is active on two other computers. The activation grace period for this additional computer has expited. Deactivate an instance of the license or contact Adobe."
I have called (no answer), emailed (auto-reply), and have been on hold for more than an hour for someone to assist me in the "chat window".

  • Unreadable Files After installing Leopard UPDATE

Okay, so I went through a bunch of problems and though I should share my experience to hopefully help others with the same problem.
Installed leopard after being told it had no conflict with FCP6. Well, it did, as i couldn't open any of my older project files and got the dreaded error message: Unreadable or may be too new for this version of Final Cut."
Tried many things, like trashing preferences, reinstalling FCP6, opening files different ways. None were successful, heard I had to do a clean install, which I didn't want to do. Went to the genius bar, spoke with tech support and browsed these forums for another way.
After realizing that there wasn't any way for me at leats I decided to do a clean install, and IT WORKS now.
    Bad points: H
    1. Have to back up all your content on harddrive.
    2. Spend a lot of time installing everything again
    3. Spending time updating everything again.
    Good points:
    1. You can work again with FCP and Leopard
    2. The computer runs faster.
    3. You realize a lot of junk you didn't need to begin with and you have a nice new clean computer.
    Hopefully this will help others.

Also my boss figured out another solution. On the computer that I was getting the other files from, I had to have it export the FCP file in an XML format. Then once I opened the XML file on my computer I just reconnected all of my media and it worked.
For some reason the intel/G5 switching didn't like something about FCP6 project files but it worked when the file is in XML format.

  • Hard drive not recognized AFTER installing leopard

So I installed Leopard on my 12in Powerbook G4, having the usual problem of non-recognition of my hard drive (from a third party) but was able to install Leopard after fiddling with disk utility.
Now the computer will not recognize the hard drive after I restarted it. I've tried rebooting holding down the option key and selecting the hard drive and it still didn't recognize after restarting (it shows a prohibit sign). Also tried booting in single-user mode but it keeps waiting for the root device forever.
Has anybody had a similar problem?

    Unplugging worked!!!
I have no idea what PRAM is but someone said that unplugging your computer resets it so, I thought I'd give unplugging a shot. So, I shut down my computer and unplugged it. I also unplugged the power on the HD. (because I wasn't sure which one they were talking about.)
Anyway, I went away for about five minutes.
I came back plugged in the HD power first. Then, I plugged in the power cord for the computer and turned it on.
As soon as I logged in I was asked if I wanted to use my external HD for Time Machine backups.
I saw the icon for the HD on the Desktop where is belongs. I can open the drive and access the files with no problem.
Try this if you haven't yet.
