Problems Reading DVD +R - Macbook

I created a data DVD in DVD+R format and my Macbook won't display any of the copied files. It will load and recognize the DVD. The files on the DVD can be accessed just fine on my other computers. Any thoughts?

I asked the same question about DVD+R/DL disks - they will not work in Macbooks with CD-only burn drives. According to the DVD+R Manufacturers forum web site, DVD+R is supposed to be transportable between different brands of drives without finalizing. DVD-R does not guarantee interoperability without finalizing.
It might be worth finalizing the disc (if it isn't already) on the PC that burned it, then see if the mac can read the disc. The down side is that you can't add any more files once the disc is finalized.

  • Problem reading DVD-RW on my Macbook

Hi, I am trying to watch a home movie that was saved onto a DVD-RW disk by one of these stand alone DVD players. My dad took the movie through the machine to write it to DVD. But when I insert it into my Macbook it can't read the disk. The message you have inserted a blank disk comes up. Can I download some software to fix this?
    Info from ATA = MATSHITADVD-R UJ-857E

I am not aware of a software fix.
Most problems like this are caused by the software that was used to burn the disc to begin with.
I find that using top of the line in software and the Media used do make a difference.
These 2 things more than any or thing seem to fix this type of issue.

    http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
One other note I try to stay away from cheap media when buying disc's,
You will also find that sticking with DVD-R will play in just about anything.
This isn't true of some of the + and RW media.

  • Trouble reading DVDs on macbook.

My macbook is able to read and burn DVDs, and I have done it in the past, but for some reason now it won't read any of the DVDs I try. When I put the DVD, it sounds as if it's trying to read it, but then the computer spits it out. I tried it in a Macbook Pro and it mounted just fine. What could the problem be? Thanks.

  • Problems reading DVDs

    Hello,
I'm trying to make images of my DVDs (created on Windows Vista) using Disk Utility. Unfortunately, every DVD that I have cannot be read by the DVD drive in my iMac.
When I try to create a disk image via Disk Utility, I'm getting:
6/4/08 9:27:07 PM Disk Utility[1872] Unable to create “Lena - DVD5.cdr”. (Input/output error). I have tried to copy tall the files manually from the DVD to HDD and the copy operation fails on one of the files. When I try to do the same on my PC , everything works fine. I can copy the entire disk and also copy all the files. The interesting thing is that after making a fresh copy on my PC, I'm able to create the image on my Mac.
So some DVDs work fine on my Mac, some are problematic. All have been cerated the same way (Windows Vista -> DVD Maker). DVDs discs are perfectly clean - no single scratch.
Did anybody experience similar issue? Shall I request replacing the drive (It's a brand new machine)?
The DVD drive name: Matshita DVD-R UJ-875
    Regards,
    Marcin

I don't know what the problem is. I just purchased and set up a 24" iMac yesterday. It transferred all my files from my old Mac G4 tower in under 9- minutes... but some software didn't work and needs to be reinstalled. This machine will not read any CDs or DVDs... I've tried music, application and movies. Nothing works. One of the reasons I needed a new computer was that my old one no longer would burn CDs--this is worse--it won't even accept them! And they come out all scratched up! I am ready to scream. No... I am screaming...

  • Problem reading dvd OS X Leopard

I have problems to install Snow Leopard OX. After a few minutes it stops because of afailure reading the dvd. Is this a know failure?

There are some reasons why attempting to install Snow Leopard can fail.
    Suitability of your computer.
    Valid installation DVD.
    Hardware known to perform satisfactorily.
    1. Is you iMac able to run Mac OS 10.6?
General requirements for 10.6 Snow Leopard
        •    Mac computer with an Intel processor
        •    1GB of memory (though I'd recommend 2GB)
        •    5GB of available disk space for the installation process.
        •    DVD drive for installation
    2. Are you using the retail 10.6 DVD that looks like this? (A Grey disk will likely not work as they are hardware specfic.)
    3. Does your optical drive play DVD's normally without any problem? If you think the drive is old and a bit dodgy, try using an external optical drive if you have access to  one.

  • Problems reading DVD's

I have recorded some old VideoCam tapes onto DVD using a link to a DVD recorder attached to my TV. I then wanted to edit some of the film so put the DVD in the drive of the computer and it kicked the DVD straight out. I then purchased an external DVD/RW drive for the computer and then put the same disk in the drive and it comes up disk empty.
I know there is something on it, any ideas/help ?
    Dave

Many DVD recorders let you add recordings to a DVD. There should be a command on the recorder's menu ti Finalize a DVD. Once a DVD is Finalized, you can't add anything to it. An unfinalized DVD will play on the DVD recorder, but many other players and computers will not be able to read it.
If the recorder doesn't let you add to a DVD, then it wouldn't have a Finalize command.

  • OS X v 10.3.9 Problem Reading DVDs

-R DVDs that I have burned on iDVD are ejected after several seconds of whirring. These DVDs operate normally on the TV's DVD player/recorder. Some -R DVDs work normally but -RW DVDs are always ejected.
There does not appear to be a problem with CD's holding music or data such as JPEGS or with commercially produced DVDs.
Is there a solution to this problem?

  • 2008 MacBook Pro Reads DVD-Rs as blank (when they aren't)

    Hello!
It seems as though my poor little MacBook Pro is having problems reading DVDs.
For a while it simply wouldn't read DVDs at all - it would whirr and spit them back out. After repeatedly putting the DVDs back into the machine, however, it does EVENTUALLY read and play them on the 4th or 5th try. Thus, that problem is only relatively minor.
More problematic, however, is that the optical drive reads all DVD-Rs and DVD-RWs as blank, even when they are clearly not. Instead, it gives me the window that says "You inserted a blank DVD. Choose an action from the pop-up menu or click ignore."
The DVD-RWs, however, are, again, not blank. Other Macs - older MacBooks - read and play them fine, so it's clearly not a disk compatibility issue.
I tried restarting, resetting the SMC, blowing air into the optical drive (albeit rather amateurishly) and re-inserting the DVD-RW multiple times, all to no avail.
Does this mean I need a new optical drive?

Same problem I have. Using Titanium 10 the drive wrote to a blank disc fine (Verbatim DV-R) but when I put the same disc back in it's name says "Blank CD" rather than the "Test Disc" I named it and says it's recordable. Happens with professional (installation discs) as well. Discs read fine on my MacBook.

  • CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive reads DVD's but spits out CD's

    Hi,
The CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive of my Titanium Pawoerbook doesn't read CD's anymore; it makes funny noises and spits any CD's out again. Funny thing is that I don't have any problems reading DVD's.
Is there anything I could do to fix this problem?
    Thanks for any advice!
    Malte

Try using a DVD drive cleaning disc first. Available in most PC shops. My Ti's Superdrive goes through phases of having a bad day making ugly cluncking noises and spitting discs out but the next day works just fine...

  • Macbook Pro not reading DVDs

My Macbook Pro will read CDs but not DVDs or executable DVDs. Is it a setting or hardware problem?

I've had my MBP since September 09, watched many area 4 dvds, but 6 months ago it started having problems w dvd's... either it would take forever to recognize the movies, or would just spin in the computer... not even ejecting. I recently purchased the family pack of Snow Lepoard 10.6.3, to catch my Mac Pro up to date, and also hoping my MBP's dvd problems would be fixed... no go! The MBP won't even read the Leopard install dvd!!!!!!! It spins for a few minutes, then ejects (well, at least it ejects, bc any movies I put now, just spin for hours). I thought if I copied the contents of the Leopard to pendrive, and then from there installed it, perhaps it'd work. No go. I tried reading the dvd from my Mac Pro, using the mac pro as a slave via firewire to my MBP. No Go. Just says that "Instal MAC OSx cannot be used from this volume". Ok, so perhaps this is not the right way to go about this, but obviuosly there is a real problem w the MBP dvd drive. The only disks the MBP reads are audio cds. From what I read here, many people are having problems w MBP dvd drives... Mac needs to get a solution to us quick! I havn't tried a cleaning disk, bc I afraid I'll never get the disk out of my MBP... I mean if it won't read the OSx install disk, imagine what a disk w little feathers on it will do.. probably explode my laptop! What a bumber this is turning out to be!!!! I will try compressed air, but I doubt it will have an effect. Any other ideias?

  • MATSHITA DVD-R drive problems in my Black Macbook!!!

    Hi all
I have been reading about alot of users having problems with various drives and I want to make sure I have done everything before I take it to get repaired.
Basically when I insert a DVD, i get a noise which sound like it reading the disk, then it stops and starts again. It does this three times then ejects the disk.
    My optical drive details are:

    Please can anyone help?
    Thanks
    Gopher.

These drives do wear out, but can be replaced. OWC sells a replacement drive and has good installation instructions <http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/superdrive/MacBook_13>. You will need some tools and a bit of patience, but you will end up with a new SuperDrive in your MacBook. The model that I have is identified as MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ867PD, and it works fine with all Apple software as well as Toast.

  • IMac not reading scratched DVDs but macbook does

I understand that badly scratched DVDs shouldn't work, but my macbook happily reads DVDs we borrow from the library, as does an Xbox, but our iMac won't even recognise them. Just spits them out. Have we got a faulty/oversensitive drive?
Only bought the iMac about a year ago (macbook is older). Initially wasn't a problem and has taken us a while to realise that DVDs were reading in other machines. We just assumed they were too scratched for any machine.

    Hi Russ,
I would be surprised if the DVDs WERE readable if they are badly scratched. The fact that the MacBook reads them just means it has a very tolerant optical drive. iMacs are rather finicky about a lot of things, memory has to be exactly right, etc. Others on here have reported optical drives that reject even new DVDs for various reasons, so it sounds like just a picky drive and probably not one that is faulty.
If you are concerned you could take it to an Apple Retail store and have the genius bar folks check it out...and take one of the reject DVDs along to try on other iMacs in the store and see what happens. That could be a thing to try anyway just to see what happens.

  • MacBook will not mount CDs but will mount & read DVDs

This MacBook is used mainly for surfing, email and word processing. Very few other programs are installed and/or used. Recently it stopped mounting and reading CD's. It continues to mount & read DVD's. When I insert a CD (commercial or home burned) the drives sounds like it is trying to read it and then after awhile it ejects the CD. I have other Macs & PC's which can read the rejected CDs.
All software is up-to-date and disk permissions are in good shape. AppleCare had me reset the PRAM. Would appreciate any other steps I can try to fix the situation. In several weeks, I will be traveling to a city with an authorized Apple repair unit where I can have the computer looked at. I'd rather fix it myself if possible

If your computer is covered by warranty or extended Applecare they will probably replace the drive.
In many cases, though, these sorts of problems can be simply overcome using a drive cleaning disc.
Certainly worth a try if you are out of warranty (Apple have said that they don't like cleaning discs in the past so you may not want to use one if you are still under warranty etc. I have personally used cleaning discs for many years in Apple slot load drives without the slightest problem however, and they have instantly "fixed" drives that would otherwise seem to be beyond redemption!).
    Cheers

  • Problem to read DVD+R DL

    Since I can remember, I never read a DVD+R DL in my MacBook Pro 15'' 2009. I have a MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-868.
    What could be the problem?
    Thanks very much!

I have a problem when trying to read a burned DVD-R
DL. The system just ejects the DVD after about 20-25
seconds of trying to read it. The same thing happens
when I put in a blank DL DVD. The format is DVD-R
DL, which I believe this iMac should be able to
    read/write.
    Any advice? - Thanks.

My CD drive on my macbook doesn't read CDs anymore.  It only reads DVDs.  How can I get it to read CDs again?

Is it readable in a Windows computer?  If not then you can try Disk Utility to repair the drive-- although that may be dangerous too.
I haven't had this problem so I out of safe ideas.  There are ustilies out there.   I used the seach term "repair flash drive Mac OS X" to locate some of these.
If the data is essential there are pay-for services to recover data looked the price was in the range $50 - $1000
