Problems recording real instruments

The other day, me and my band tried to record some songs. We recorded drums and then guitar. We then tried recording bass (by plugging straight into my computer) and it would keep cutting out. What I mean is that I would start recording, and then it would suddenly stop - if it started recording at all.
What can I do to fix this?

"We then tried recording bass (by plugging straight into my computer) and it would keep cutting out."
Could you be a little more specific? What is your definition of 'cutting out'? Was the sound turning on/off? Was the track acting up somehow? If it was the sound then you probably need to get an interface made for instruments.

  • Garageband skipping "record real instrument" section

    Hey everybody,
I'm having a little problem that is driving me insane!! When I open garageband, I want to record a real instrument, but when I go to the create new playlist section, it goes straight to the saving options menu. It didn't do this before and I barely used it. I want it back the way it was!!!!
Please, can someone help me get to the record real instrument menu??

When I open garageband, I want to record a real instrument, but when I go to the create new playlist section, it goes straight to the saving options menu.
I assume you are talking about the "Create new music project" button - and when you click this, GB asks you to name the project and save it somewhere. It has always done this, GB doesn't allow for working with unsaved "Untitled" documents (which is sometimes a pain, like when you want to just check some feature to answer a forum question).

  • CANNOT RECORD REAL INSTRUMENT ON TO TRACK

I need help with a sound recording issue. I have a Macbook, an M-box2 with Protools and Garage Band software. Recently i have had a challenge trying to figure out what went wrong and where. I've used my setup many times before but, all of a sudden, I am unable to record a live sound or instrument, through all inputs on the m-box2. when i attempt to record a live instrument or sound... i get that sound through the monitors BUT, no sound is recorded on the track being used... however... I do have a signal on my levels indicator that is 3/4 of the way to the peak point... but, they don't move at all. There is also a visual recorded consistently monotone looking waveform that appears to be some sort of sound or signal, but is not audible and it does not fluctuate as a normal sound does. *PLEASE HELP ME!!!*

I have the same problem, I think. In my case, if I select "Real Instrument" when I open a new track, the Track Info box on the right has only Software Instruments available. In other words, I don't see a "Real Instruments" button next to the "Master Track" button, only Software Instruments. Further, I cannot get it to record anything from the audio line-in. I know the mic/line-in is working, but it's not registering in GarageBand (regardless of which input is selected in GB preferences). Another quirk: if I delete the Inst1 track that it starts with, then I cannot even click onto the Software Instruments to select one.

  • Need help with Garage Band 11 and my TASCAM interface recording Real Instrument

I am using a TASCAM US-122 interface with garage band 11 on a mac at 32 bit running osx 10.6.6.  Garage Band preferences / audio input and output set to TASCAM (which means it recognizes it) , but when using Real Instrument for the TASCAM and the track is armed , etc... the record function works when started except "no sound" from the device I am running thru TASCAM is being detected.
I am getting sound out of the TASCAM and simply running an AKAI mpc beat as a test.  I am sure there is something simple I have yet to do but not sure what it is in Garage Band.
Can you help ?   Thanks. GARY

with the real instrument track selected...
make sure the info pane is showing on the right (click the little "i" on the bottom right to open it; "Real Instrument" should be highlighted in blue on top).
On the bottom of the info pane it says "Input Source" and "Monitor."
Make sure the Input Source is set to the Tascam channel you're using (the channel, mono or stereo, that you've plugged your MPC into).
And if you want to hear it as you record, make sure the Monitor is set to ON.

  • Newbie ?  Recording real instruments

I have recorded an audio file (background music). I now want to record an instrument while the background music is playing. How do I do this? Do I need an audio interface?

    Hangtime-
I may have figured it out, but please give me your ideas. I have an older 12 channel Mackie Analog mixer that I hooked up to the computer's in line mic jack. (I came out of the mixer's mono output. I then plugged my guitar amp's output into the channel 1 3 pin input on the mixer. I messed around with the controls and then created a new track in GB and then recorded my harmonica to the new track while track 1 was playing (I have a studio monitor hooked up to the computer's speaker jack). It worked very well, but the Mackie seems to be very sensitive to my mic, so I will need to learn how to set the various controls. This was the first time I have used the Mackie. I had been doing my recording with a TASCAM 4 track cassette recorder. Digital does have many advantages, but I have not used it enough to form accurate opinions yet. If you have suggestions, let me know please. My budget is pretty minimal right now as my youngest is attending a private college!!!!!!!!!!

  • Recording real instruments in stereo?

I use an M-Audio fireWire Solo and plug bass or guitar into the channel 2 input. In Logic I then have to set the track to mono, select 'input 2' to get a signal. If I select 'inputs 1 and 2' whilst in stereo the signal goes only to the right channel. Is there something I should be doing, or is this a limitation of the interface or software..? I wouldn't mind so much if it didn't keep defaulting to stereo when I plug in....would be handy to cut out the extra clicking just to hear myself.

But unless you have two outputs from the instruments, or two mics on your guitar, you are in actuality recording a mono source. When you run your guitar through the processors it probably looks like a stereo meter because of some plugin. Record it mono, and then just add processing that makes it sound stereo.
When you are using your insert templates, you are probably using something in the chain that has a mono-to-stereo effect, like an amp modeler or delay or chorus, etc. You could change the ones that bother you to all mono settings, then save your changes to the channelstrip (click and hold on the word insert, then name and save it - you may want to make a folder for your settings inside this area), so you could load your own settings that don't automatically change to things you don't want or need.

  • Problem recording 2 instrument tracks at once - new user

I want to simultaneously record an EXS24 bass with my left hand and an EVP88 piano with my right.
    So I:
check "Auto demix by channel...." in the "Settings/Recording/MIDI" page
set each track to its correct MIDI channel
    arm both tracks to record
select track 1 or 2 in the arrangement window
record the two tracks, playing both hands together on the downbeat
The first note played on the un-selected track is always delayed noticeably, throwing my playing off. I have a couple of midi keyboards - they both do this. The only workaround I've found is to start the count-in a bar early and play a note with each hand to be thrown away.
I'm using the latest version of Logic Pro 9 with an Apogee Duet.
    Thanks for any help.

This is a Logic issue that needs fixing. The work-around is to record (for example) a bit of MIDI controller data like a mod wheel movement during the count-off period. That will kick start the MIDI instruments without being audible.

  • Recording Real Instruments via Garage Band

Hi, im hoping that this is a quick fix, some small detail ive overlooked. im recording with garageband, and have had constant issues which i have overcome at each step in the process. Right now im using a KORG M50 keyboard, and a microKORG, to create some cool music. Ive connected them to the MacBook via a M-Audio preamp USB Audio Interface. Everything is finally working alright. I have changed cabels, so that the level of feedback is at a minimum (i could hear the news being broadcast through the feedback of my old cabels), BUT it is only being played through the RIGHT EAR of my headphones. The left isnt getting anything. No sound being input, no sound being output. I want to be able to record on BOTH left and right. ive checked around preferences, and cant figure it out. PLEASE HELP ME!! im so close to being able to just record, and not have to worry about little hiccups like this.
any help would be extremely appreciated!!!
    Mo T

The question is whether your signal chain is stereo all the way through:
    • Is your synth sending a stereo signal?
    • Are you using stereo cables and adaptors all the way?
    • Are you using a stereo input in your interface?
    • Have you picked a stereo input in the Track Info pane?
For example, you could try to go directly into your MacBook's line-in and see if you get a stereo signal there.

I guess I should have been a bit more specific. I was looking for recommendations on audio interfaces. My apologies. So, how about suggestions for that?
There are many choices, depending on what quality you're after and your budget. Mics and interfaces range from tens to thousands of dollars. For recording vocals, a condenser microphone (compared to a dynamic microphone) will generally produce better results. When it comes to choosing an interface, it doesn't sound like you need a lot of inputs, which narrows it down. Generally, firewire is better than USB, but firewire interfaces also tend to cost a little more.
A major retailer website like www.sweetwater.com will give you a good idea of what's out there.
    Interfaces are here: http://www.sweetwater.com/shop/computer-audio/audio_interfaces/
    Microphones are here: http://www.sweetwater.com/shop/studio/studio-microphones/
They can also be helpful answering questions if you call them (some salesmen are more helpful than others), but make sure they don't sell you anything you don't want or need!!! And even if you have no intention of buying from them, their website is a good resource.
If you have any specific questions or further details (e.g. What's a decent 2-input interface for around $100? Thoughts on Apogee's Duet? Brunch recommendations in Sandpoint, Idaho? etc. ), feel free to post back!

  • Real instruments - recording/input levels

...when i am recording real instruments, the input level and recording level are inaccessible.
i click on them with the mouse, but nothing happens.
    are they preset? non-adjustable?
i can adjust the playback volume, of course, as well as other parameters like pan, monitor on/off, mute, solo, and add compression, echo, reverb and so on.
    thanks in advance!

  • Real instruments pan to one side.

on the older (not '08) version of Garageband, when i record 'real' instruments, they always pan to one-side, even though it's shown as them being in the middle, and also even if i pan it to the other side. but software instruments are fine and are panned to the middle..
so presumably i changed a setting somewhere without realising?

Chris, similar problem; long time GB user, upgraded to intel machine and '08; in editing existing tracks in new 08 version of GB, can't get them to pan; I searched help and noticed the bit on turning off echo and reverb, which I did. still can't get 'em to pan.......using either pan curves or the knob. Made sure the track was mono.....any ideas? I'd be most grateful.........

  • No Sound From SOME Real Instrument Tracks

All tracks (real, software & guitar) are recording properly and play back is fine. Then out of the blue a previously recorded real instrument track will not play back. Software tracks are playing and "blue" drum loops are playing back back, but not real bass or real guitar tracks.
The wave files are there and the activity is visible. The volume meters are moving, but there is no sound. The track is not muted and no tracks are in solo mode.
I can copy and paste the tracks and they play again, BUT they loose quality and all of the sequencing, as far as where the region sits in the song, is lost.
Any one know how to fix this?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Setting Real Instruments Problem

I have a problem setting the task info dialog box for real instruments. Although I select Real Instruments on the setup, the task info box shos only choices for software instruments and , I think, master task. Therefore, the box where the input settings are made, is blank. Nothing I do aleviates this problem. If anyone can help me, you can reach me at [email protected]

I think I know what your going through. I had a similar issue with setting up my guitar. If this info is not related to your particular problem simply disregard it as I am no expert on GarageBand and am learning like you. The problem I came across was that I could not get my Instrument to be recognized as the source of sound for the new track I added. To fix this I simply added a new "basic" track rather then simply a new track. GB then recognized my guitar and allowed me to record my instrument, only I couldnt hear what I was playing until after I had turned "monitoring" on found in the information window on the right hand side of the screen. Then by setting the input to channel 1 I avoided making sound come from only one speaker. Maybe you already know this but I just feel like being helpful in my n00b sorta way. GL

  • I record multiple tracks (3-5) from real instruments and vocals. I want to send these files to a collaborator to add more tracks to, but Garageband wants to mix these down (which I don't want). How can I send the multiple tracks files to my friend?

I record multiple tracks of real instruments and vocals wth Garage Band. I want to share the file with a collaborator so he can add another instrument or two. I have not found a way to do this without the process mixing down the tracks. I don't want them mixed down like when I send them to Itunes. Also I can't seem to just attach a file directly to an email for sending purposes. I thought I saw a method to do this with software instruments, but how do you do it with real instruments? I've tried every process on the "export" list to try to accomplish this, without success. Thanks for any breakthrough advice on this!

As isteveus said - for large projects uploading to a server would be best.
Also I can't seem to just attach a file directly to an email for sending purposes.
But for completeness's sake , you cou can mail a project, if you ctrl-click the project and use "Compress xxx.band". This will compress the project and create a zip file, that you can mail (if it is not too large). But ask your friend for the maximal file size allowed as a mail attachment.
But whichever method you use to share your project, be sure you include all loops and instruments, if your friend does not have the same JamPacks installed. You can bundle the loops into the project by saving it as an archive. "File > Save as" and check the "Archive Project" option.
If this option should be disabled, you can force it to become active by editing your project slightly. It is only available, if the project needs saving.

  • Can I get Notation when recording from a "Real Instrument"?

    Hi all,
I am plugging my Triton TR keyboard to my interface.
When in GB, I can record as a "software", and I can get the notation because I am using the soundbank of GB.
I would like to use the soundbank from my Triton TR, so I use 'Real' instrument, but at the bottom of the screen where it shows the details of what Im recording, I can only see waves, not the notation.
Can I see the notation that I am playing from the 'real' instrument?? Because I know that its receiving the information of 'what' I am playing because my midi is connected as well.
    Can anyone help?
    thanks a million

You can record midi and audio in parallel, so you can see the notes of what you played. But changes in the recorded midi track won't affect the audio, since you don't send midi out to trigger your keyboard's sounds.
