Problems recording with MIDI in Garageband

I have a Yamaha DTXplorer electronic drumset and I'm using Garageband '09 with Mac OSX 10.5.8.
I connected my drumset to the computer using an M-Audio Midisport UNO ("plug-and-play" midi to usb). I plug in the "to midi out" to my drumset. When it's connected, the UNO "midi in" light is green and the "usb" light pulses.
Garageband doesn't recognize that there's a midi attached (under preferences it says "0 MIDI inputs detected"), but I can see the UNO in my "Audio MIDI setup" utility, so I know the computer is aware that the device is plugged in. What's more strange is that when I first plugged everything in, everything worked ok. The drumset would trigger notes in GB. That only lasted for about two days though, and now it won't work at all. I really don't think there's an issue with the cord itself though.
I'm not sure if I need a driver. I downloaded the 10.5.8 one from the M-Audio site, but nothing is working. I'm getting extremely frustrated that GB won't recognize the midi. I'm not great with computers and I'm pretty new to all this, so I'd really appreciate any help I can get...
Thanks in advance for any input on this.

Does your drum machine have a USB port? If so, you could go straight in via USB, not needing the MIDI adapter. The Mac would almost certainly recognise the drum machine, maybe needing a driver download. This happened with my Roland A300 Pro. I can use MIDI connections, but it's far more convenient and just as good to go USB. But this is just straight off the top of the head--you'd have worked out such a basic troubleshoot by now.  Try a new driver from the Yamaha site, if available. Try a restart of the Mac with the gear plugged in (it has been known to work). Try a different cable, just in case. Try a different USB port on the Mac. These tend to be generic fixes, and success varies wildly. Finally, you're sure you're going MIDI OUT of the drum unit, right?

• Recording to midi into Garageband with an electro drum kit?

Hey all
I thought I'd have a play around with a few things this evening on Garageband after work, but wanted to confirm a few things before I start anything.
Ive got an electro drum kit with midi capabailities and also have a Midi to USB lead.
I am assuming I can take a midi in/out from the electro kits brain through the Midi to USB lead into my Mac.
Connect my headphones to my Mac and play with my kit using the in built Garageband drum sounds?
Moving on from this I am assuming I can record the drum midi notes too directly into Garageband (to edit later if necessary)?
I'm guessing that if the above is possible the pads on the kit may not correspond to whats sounds are being played in GB so I will have to remap?
Moving on further from this I also have a Akai EIE Pro interface with 4 channel inputs, so I was going to attempt to record a full live 3 piece band.
(2 vox, 1 guitar, 1 bass) with the Akai, and then also record the midi drums at the same time.
I am assuming that this is also possible?
Thanks

Yes. Caveat: the Midi to USB "lead" that you mention is actually an interface that might need a driver to work with your computer.
Moving on from this I am assuming I can record the drum midi notes too directly into Garageband (to edit later if necessary)?
Yes.
I'm guessing that if the above is possible the pads on the kit may not correspond to whats sounds are being played in GB so I will have to remap?
Exactly. Does your drumkit allow to assign a midi note to every pad? Then you could adjust it to trigger the correct GB sounds. An alternative is a midi mapping software like MidiPipe that transforms the incoming midi signal (I haven't tried it personally).

Yes. Again: make sure you have the right driver for the interface that corresponds to your OS version.
Happy playing around!

• Record Keyboard MIDI using GarageBand for iPad

See this video using GB4iPad to record keyboard MIDI:-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQlbjFxdxGE

I just discovered the arpeggiator feature today, and indeed, as gb 1111 mentioned, it doesn't work via MIDI input!!!! An incredible oversight! Perhaps an option to allow this can be added in an update, Apple?
I am forwarding gb 1111's concern to the GarageBand for iPad feedback page: http://www.apple.com/feedback/garageband_ipad.html. Let's all do the same, in the hope of further improvements and refinements to GarageBand for iPad by Apple!

• Problems recording electric guitar in Garageband

I'm fairly new to using Garageband. I have Garageband 09 on my Macbook Pro. I'm playing a Fender Telecaster and a Stratocaster and am going through an Edirol (USB) interface and using Guitar Rig 4 plugins for amp modeling.
I'm running into a few problems that I don't understand how to solve and am hoping someone can offer some help or advice.
First, when going through the Edirol, I notice that the Recording Level setting on the Track Info pane on the far right of the screen is not active. I'm assuming the Edirol interface is over-riding this. Is that normal when using an interface?
I use the input level knob on the Edirol to control the volume when I record (because the Recording Level is not active) and I keep it fairly low (about level 3). When I record the track using a clean guitar sound I watch the meter on the track pane on the left side of the arrange window. I adjust the settings so it never goes into red, and I watch to make sure it doesn't.
Then when I play back what I've recorded, it jumps into the red in a few spots.
I'm baffled by that. Is there any explanation and fix for this?
Also, the recording of the song (with drum loops and vocals on it) has some clicks or sounds like a scratchy phonograph needle. I thought it might be the sound breaking up from distortion, but they don't always correspond to when the meters hit the red zone.
What are these sounds, why are they appearing and how can I avoid/get rid of them?
Lastly, just about every amp setting using Guitar Rig 4 and Garageband's own amp models that have distortion (I use distortion on lead parts at times) have a terrible level of hiss and noise.
I've tried using the noise gate to get rid of it, but, while it silences the hiss and noise when you're not actually playing anything, the hiss is still very present when you are.
Also, if the noise gate is set too high, it kills any sustain. And the hiss is still there anyway when playing, although it's a bit less.
Is there some explanation for this, and any solutions? How can I get rid of this noise/hiss and still have a great sounding lead with sustain?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can offer any help.

Yes, that's how it works!
When I record the track using a clean guitar sound I watch the meter on the track pane on the left side of the arrange window. I adjust the settings so it never goes into red, and I watch to make sure it doesn't.
It's perfectly fine for the recording level to go into the read, actually that's what you want. Just make sure it never clips (the two little dots at the end of the meter scale lighting up).
Then when I play back what I've recorded, it jumps into the red in a few spots.
I'm baffled by that. Is there any explanation and fix for this?
Recording level and playback level are two different things. The latter depends on how you set your track's volume. Turn it down if it clips (again, red is fine.)
Maybe other people can comment on your distortion problems!

• Problem recording with a mic in flash 9.0.124.0

Hi, I just wanted to see if someone can help me with this
issue. I'm using Ubuntu Gutsy with Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.16 (in
case this has some relevance). I can see flash videos, I can hear
sounds, everything works fine, everywhere. But when I try to record
audio in some pages (using a mic), even if I can use the mic
outside, and even if Flash recognizes the mic as being connected,
it doesn't work. I can shout next to the mic and Flash won't show
any sign of "hearing" anything (the yellow bar next to the control
doesn't show). :(
Hope someone helps.

Bentley,
Don't mean to shoot the messenger...so please take this in
good faith.
I'd gladly log a bug if anything was ever done about it. I've
been logging bugs with Adobe on Flash player and Flex for two years
but these bugs are still outstanding and deferred to the next
release :). Releases come and go but the issues are outstanding.
These issues are show stoppers for a lot of people.
I see no point in me taking the extra effort if nothing is
going to be done about it. Other software companies I work with
respond immediately.
Others, won't see the issue unless they're doing what we are
:). Things were working fine until we upgraded to the new player.
To me that's an issue that needs to be addressed no?
I'd gladly provide you with two links, one that shows this
issue and one that does not if it helps verify the problem.

• Problem Recording with a MOTU Ultra Lite

Hi, everyone:
I'm not getting any green bar movement on the audio/recording display. It worked yesterday, but now, suddenly, nothing. Here's the thing: I CAN RECORD. My MacBook Pro is showing a connecton with the MOTU - the meter goes up and down in system preferences. Also, the MOTU is showing a connection with my MacBook - meter on MOTU going up and down.
But in FCP X...no green in recording meter. Yet I AM recording. Difficult to monitor levels, obviously.
I checked the channel (channel 1, mono, only one mic). Everything seems OK.
Thanks either way

• Problem recording with keyboard...

I am trying to put some crowd noises at the beginning of a song, and whenever I do the "applause and laughter" or "comedy noises" instrument and try to record from flat/sharp keys like "w" "e" "t" "y" or "u", it makes the sound, but it doesn't actually record in the song.
It only records when I hit non-flat notes.

i can't duplicate that here, all keys with sounds play and record (and playback).

• Problem recording with WaveStu

Hi all! I can't figure out why I'm not getting a signal when I'm recording. I believe my soundcard is working fine because I can play back old recordings through the external amplifier and also can get an imput signal off the card. When I select "record", it says it's recording, but there's no display of a wave on the screen. When I save the file and play it back, there's nothing. I've checked the obvious stuff like the volume control. The Help is really unhelpful on this. I've sent an email to Creative, but have gotten no reply yet. I wanted to use the weekend to transfer a pile of old tapes. Any ideas? Thanks!
Paul

Hey,
Ok I read your post so I realized i've never used wave studio to try to record. I have a elite pro as well.
I tried to record just now using the aux in on the external amp, and you are right it doesn't work. Same exact problem you are having. I have another problem too I think I just updated drivers so it might fix this problem not sure, but when I record using the other recording program. Its all staticly and stuff. I can't figure out why it is real bad quaitly and makes static noises and stuff. I have my guitar and mic going through a mixer andthen into my external x fi amp. Its fine when I play it where everything is not up loud but soon as I like turn everything up major amounts of static. My aim is shadowing98304 and my msn is [email protected]][email protected] and my yahoo is shadowing98320 get on messager so we can talk about these problems.

• Problem recording with L

Whenever recording something the volume level is either too low to be heard or its insanely loud and distorted. This happens nearly every other time I record something. It seems as if the input volume changes without affecting any of the sliders on the volume control. Sometimes it works fine but it happens to much to just ignore. Im using a line in from my amp to record. Ive also tried using my microphone but I get the same results.

Im using windows xp on one of the newer HP pavilion models (not sure what it is exactly). The other day I uninstalled the card and reinstalled it. It recorded fine after doing this but now its back to the state it was at in my other post. Now whenever I use a microphone it doesnt record anything at all except for static, but the monitor feature still works fine. Also, whenever I select line in as the input source and start recording, it only plays back through one speaker. Im starting to think that this card just plain sucks for recording. So many people have been having this problem and no one has found a solution. Creative needs to warn people about this because Im planning on taking this card back to Wal-mart.

• Clicks in audio recording with midi

If I have an audio instrument open, and am playing via midi, at the same time as I am recording audio, I get clicks in the audio. This wasn't always the case.
Does anyone else get this?

• Problems recording with Logic Pro 8

I just purchased an Aluminum MacBook 2.4 GHz (2 GB memory) and Logic Pro Studio. I couldn't justify spending the extra cash on a MacBook Pro as the specs are way too similar nowadays.......except for Firewire. I didn't think I'd need a Firewire port as USB 2.0 is supposed to be faster than Firewire 400. So I have an audio interface connected via USB 2.0 and a 1 TB external hard drive running at 7200 RPM also connected via USB 2.0. Problem is, each track in Logic takes forever to load before it records (i.e. I press record and have to wait like a minute before the recording begins), and subsequent tracks added are not recording or working properly. I'm recording everything to the external hard drive and now am thinking the USB 2.0 is not fast enough for recording processes. But if USB 2.0 is faster than Firewire 400, why should I be having this trouble? Do you need Firewire 800 to record to an external hard drive properly?
I'm beside myself thinking that I just purchased a $500 program and won't be able to run it on my MacBook the way I intended. It seems like the computer should be able to handle the workload of the program. Would swapping out the internal hard drive for a 7200 RPM drive work for recording as long as I immediately backed up the data on the external drive to save space? What about upgrading to 4 GB of memory? Will I have trouble regardless as long as I am recording several tracks on one song?
I can't tell if this is a hardware problem or not. Maybe my problem is I had this grand idea in my head that I'd be able to max out Logic Pro on a MacBook just like I could on a Mac Pro Desktop. But I've seen friends of mine max out Pro Tools on OLDER MacBook Pros; what gives? Any and all insight/help would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah i just reformatted the external hard drive and am going to attempt recording again tomorrow. I have a Seagate external drive that's supposed to be Mac compatible, but I've reformatted it twice. I've read that if the format is not correct then you're going to have recording problems. If that doesn't work then I'll try the internal HD and look into a different external drive.
I know that USB 2.0 is only "theoretically" faster than Firewire 400, but I'd like to find a USB external HD that is known to support the highest USB speeds available. But I dunno if USB 2.0 has a protocol that supports 2 way data transfer like Firewire, so I'm not sure how much it would matter.

• How do I monitor and record a MIDI instrument on Garageband?

I may be missing something simple in Garageband setup. I want to monitor and record a drumkit via its MIDI output. It is a Yamaha DTXplorer so I have Subtlesoft Midipipe installed and a Focusrite Saffire 6 USB converter. Microphones and guitars are being monitored and recorded with without problem. When I connect the Focusrite to my Macbook air and drumkit the MIDI indicators are blank, no MIDI input detected by Garageband. Then I close GB and launch Midipipe, the MIDI input detected light on the Focusrite illuminates and GB detects one MIDI input (Saffire 6) in preferences window. But if I select new track/software instrument Saffire 6 input is grayed out and so cannot be selected (if I select the mic or guitar sources it is bold and can be selected). If I go ahead and create the software instrument there is no monitor button and nothing is heard or recorded.

What is the best way to uninstall and reinstall the Focusrite MIDI interface driver. And to uninstall and reinstall the Subtlesoft Midipipe (which is required to get the correct mapping for a Yamaha drumkit)? This was done for me at the Apple Store One On One session in a prior attempt to fix this problem but obviously it did not work. I'd like to try it one more time with the drumkit connected. I did see a screen at one point which allowed me to select the inputs from the Focusrite but I could never find it again. I don't think it was a Garageband menu but somewhere else, maybe during the driver or software install for the Focusrite. I would love to get back to that screen again and take a hard look at it.

• Recording with Garageband for IOS

I wanted to share a recording or two using the ipad so that people could see that garageband for IOS doesn't suck.  I didn't spend too much time throwing them together, but at the same time they're not too horrible either. They give a pretty decent idea of what a 1st gen ipad with a 5 dollar app is capable of in regards to guitar and shred-type guitar stuff. I'm kind of sick of reading and listening to scathing reviews on how the ipad and Garageband in particular is for non-musicians and noobs who want to sound like they're making music... (ooo that could describe me... yikes!) If I could have had an ipad-like device when I was just getting started, I think that I would be a much better player today. I am totally blown away at the expectations people have of a 5 dollar program, when they haven't spent the time trying to see what it does do well. Anyways, here's hoping that this post helps people out that are trying to find out what the capabilities of an ipad with GB are, especially if they are a guitarist. At the end of the day, it is still the person using the device that either makes it sound horrible, mediocre or amazing...
So anyways, I decided to make a quick track where I didn't spend too much time on the music, and I used only what was in GB in regards to my tones and stuff; That means all stock amp and pedal combinations. I also wanted a track that focused on guitar parts, and making the best of what the app has to offer. I'm sure with some tweaking and mucking around there could be some much cooler tones generated, but hey... it is what it is. Also, I used a Godin LGXT direct into the ipad with an Apogee Jam. Very inexpensive. Bass and drums were recorded with the Line6 Mobile25. The tablet's screen works too, but I find that the keyboard is a lot more accurate, especially for drums. Obviously, you could go into the drum and guitar parts and edit and tweak the parts further, creating drum parts that feel and sound a bit more lifelike, but I didn't do that here; this one was about direct recorded electric guitar...
https://soundcloud.com/jayesskerr/ipadgination
Arguably, you could also record your stuff via microphones also. In this case I used a Roland VS880 as a mixer (It was handy), with 4 CAD microphones connected to it to capture my drum kit. (I'm not much of a drummer, but you get the idea...) I then just lined out of the VS880 into the apogee Jam into the ipad. BANG! This app could work very easily for drummers also... or people who must have their tone and not a digital preset...
https://soundcloud.com/jayesskerr/just-drums
I own a couple of good mac boxes loaded with killer software, and I also have some decent interfaces. They are pretty superior in regards to the amount of options that they present, without a doubt. And then when you include all of the 3rd party plugins and loops and stuff that you can get... well, it's very, very nice. The ipad intrigued me because it's self contained, and is extremely portable. It has limitations which force one to be kind of clever in order to work around them. Also, the recording process with an ipad is very, very quick. Setup time is minimal.  So anyways, with just Garageband, and an Apogee Jam (I have the irig connector also, but in my opinion the Jam is so much superior...). The only other thing I'd reccomend is the Line6 Mobilekeys25 which I used here; MUCH easier to enter notes in on bass and drums. Here's some points to sum up my opinions on my experience with the device;
No it's not better than Logic or Cubase or prottols or something with an interface. It's only a 5 dollar app on a 600 dollar tablet (In my case an outdated 1st generation ipad).
There's only 8 tracks, but you can bounce and merge.
The amount of sections is limited, but you can work around that too...
It's extremely portable. Way less gear to haul and set up, but feel free to use your own stuff with it also...
GB on a tablet is very, very easy to learn. Super intuitive and quick to use.
The amount of sections is limited, but again you could always just make another song project and then stitch it together later...
The amp and pedal emulations aren't as good as Guitar Rig, a line6 Pod Pro hd, or a FAS Axe-FXII. But they aren't horrible, they are certainly pretty good for the price of 5 bucks...
If you're broke/poor and want to get into recording and sharing your music, this is the ideal way to go about it. Your recording device (The ipad) also makes documents, does email, takes and edits pictures, takes and edits video... The only thing standing in the way of you sounding great is you...
The 'merge track' option is a powerful tool, especially on your midi tracks.
No pitch correction. Waaaaaahhh boo hoo! You're gonna have to learn how to sing. Plus, it's only 5 bucks!
Don't want to use the internal drum sounds? Or want to use your amp's miced sound? Get a small mixer, and connect your mic to that. Then connect the mic to the Apogee Jam (There are other products out there that work better and in stereo, but this would do in a pinch) and you should be good to go.
I recommend using a small keyboard like the Line6 Mobile Keys 25 to enter your midi/virtual instruments stuff in. For me, using just the pad means more track editing after I enter it...
The last point is this; there's other software besides just GB. Cubasis anyone?
Anyways, thanks for checking this out, I hope that it helps, and if anyone else has any opposing viewpoints or points to add, please do.

I have some problems working on LogicX, cuz when i play the track that i recorded with the AXIOM AIR 61, sometimes don't sound nothing, and then when i put play again it sound the track, the think is that the LogicX. I don't know if it's a driver problem o something like that. Need Help Urgent!

Folks.... I eventually solved the problem so if anyone else is interested here is the solution.
The Axiom DirectLink for Logic/Garage band: Axiom_DirectLink_For_Logic_OSX_1_0_0-3.dmg
Should install a file called Axiom.bundle in the directory
MacintoshHD/Library/Application Support/MIDI Device Plug-ins/Axiom.bundle
In my case (see above) the file had successfully installed to that location.  However, for some peculiar reason the permissions on the folder had been changed - current admin and users could not read or write.  I have no idea how that happened.  In any event, despite the fact that the file had been installed, when Logic was opened I was unable to see the Axiom as an available control surface to install.
I reset the permissions and the problem was solved!
It's only taken me a week to get there but now happy that it's OK.  The Axiom612 isn't cheap!
I hope this helps someone else.

• Terrible noise recording with Apogee Mic in Garageband on iPhone 4S and iPad 3rd generation, both IOS 6

Hey guys
I get a terrible noise on the audiotracks recording with Apogee Mic in Garageband on iPhone 4S and iPad 3rd generation, both have IOS 6 installed.
Apogee support have not been helpfull, neither Google, but maybe you guys have experienced the same problem?
I tried to test on an iPhone 4 with IOS 5 installed and it worked fine, clean recordings, no noise.
Regards Rico

Strange nobody have experienced the same problem
Well, I think I fixed the noise issues myself.
Have you ever noticed the noise from your stereo speakers when you recieve a sms?
Well, the noise I experienced all the time was that kind of 'sms noise'.
What seems to eliminate the problem is this:
In settings,
- turn "Airplane mode" off
- turn "Do not disturb" off (this is a new setting in IOS 6)
Maybe this can be helpful to somebody else
