Problems replacing hard drive on Intel G5 flat-screen iMac

Good Day Everyone,
I’m having issues with the Apple instructions on hard drive replacement instructions not really matching the Intel iMac I have, so I need some help in trying to disassemble the machine. The iMac I have is the white 20-inch flat-panel (model A1174). My case does not come apart like the instructions describe the process. The instructions indicate three screws have to be removed and lifting up on the metal stand opens the back of the case, this is not the case with my G5. First I have four Torx #8 that have to be remove then I have remove the two Philips screws to remove the RAM memory door. When I lift on the metal stand the computer the whole back case separates from the front case, but that does not give me access to the hard drive.
Has anyone have a real recipe to take these white G5 Intel iMacs apart to get to the hard drive?
Thank you,
Martin

Mr. NCPhotoguy,
Hope you had a wonderful Easter, and I spent Easter with my family down in Los Angeles area.
Thank you for the YouTube link, yes the disassembly is exactly like the Mac I have.
Thank you for your research on this matter.
Now I ran into a little minor problem, exporting all the iTunes data-Music & Videos. I know I cannot just copy the files off the drive when I hook-up the original drive as an external drive, but I will post this on iTunes section of the support section.
Thank you for all your help. Have a great day.
Martin

  • Replaced hard drive - now Intel Rapid Storage Tech screen comes up first?

A couple of weeks ago I replaced the hard drive in my Pavilion dm4-3090se laptop with a 240GB Samsung SSD (the laptop came with a 500GB hybrid hard drive that is now my backup).
Everything runs fine, except when I first turn it in I get the screen shown in the picture below and it takes a good 5 or 6 seconds before it closes it and opens Windows. How can I make this screen go away?

Are you running Windows 7 or Windows 8? I see you still have the 32 gig mSATA acceleration cache drive installed and it has the Intel Rapid Storage acceleration partition on it, just disabled. Can you find the Intel Rapid Storage control panel and reformat the 32 gig accelerator drive? It will look something like this:
I can also suggest just physically removing the 32 gig acceleration disk drive. You don't really need it any more. You can't acclerate an SSD and would not need to do that anyway since having a main SSD is even faster than having the accelerator. See page 44 of the Manual:

  • Replace Hard Drive on Intel (late 2006) insight

I'm trying to replace the hard drive on my iMac G5 Insight (late 2006). I know it will void my warranty, but I'm still in the middle of doing it and need help.
I've successfully removed the LCD screen and am to the computer hard drive, but I don't see how to get it out because the screws are inaccessible. Has anyone replaced a hard drive on the newer G5 that could provide me with some steps to get the hard drive out?
Does anyone have any photos they have taken of the new G5 that will show how to remove the hard drive once the LCD has been removed?
    Thanks!

  • Replacing hard drive on 2010 20.5 inch imac

The 1 TB hard drive on my 2010 20.5 inch imac has died. It is out of warranty. Before I pay someone for the labor charge of replacing it, i was wondering how hard it is to open the imac and do it myself.
Ive replaced many a HD in my day...Im just concerned about the difficulty of opening the unit and gaining access to the drive. Anyone with any experience doing so? Or if you know of a link that has instructions?
    Thank you.

I've done this.  There are plenty of guides on the internet & Youtube.
The most nerveracking bit is taking the glass front off but I did this no problems with a rubber suction cup.
It's worth doing this and making sure what model of hard drive you have.  Mine had a temp sensor which fit into the drive rather than the one which sticks to it with adhesive so in the end I got the same manufacturer drive and had to make a DIY mod with a stanley knife to make sure the cable fit.
It's not as hard as it sounds to be fair.  Watch the Youtube guides and lift the screen gently so you don't accidentally pull out a cable and you'll be fine.

  • I need a replacement hard drive for a 2004 G5 PowerPC iMac.

I picked it up for free at a garage sale, then opened it up and saw that ithad no hard drive. I don't know exactly what to buy, so if anybody could give me links to some on Amazon or Ebay that would be great. I don't really care about the capacity of the hard drive. Thanks!

Generally speaking any 3.5", 7200 RPM 1.5 Gbps SATA hard drive will do.   3 Gbps are too fast for it, and some may not down step without the proper jumper setting.

  • IPod 4th Gen Click Wheel replaced hard drive; problems

Ok, So I replaced the 20gb hard drive with a new EXACT replacement hard drive, no other problems with iPod. But iTunes will not recognize it because the hard drive is not formatted. I tried formating it with Disk Utility but keep getting error messages. Im not sure what format to use. When the 4th gen came out Intel processors werent here so Im sure I need to simply format as Mac OS Extended. There is no HFS= format in Disk Utility. Im lost as to what to do. Please help??!

    hmm - curiouser and curiouser
I've now managed to get it to manually update (after iTunes took 100% of system resources and I had to force quit it...) but that still doesn't really help me with the auto-sync feature which still won't work

  • My 2010 imac does not recognise my time machine since I had the Seagate replacement hard drive. Any thought from anyone? The External hard drive is a 1 TB seagate

My iMac (2010 intel model) does not recognise or communicate with my external seagate drive as a time machine for back ups since I had the 1TB Seagate replacement hard drive as part of the replacement prgram with OSX LION 10.5.8 installed.
Is this because I need to update the time machine drive itself?

  • MacBook Pro does not boot past apple screen after replacing hard drive

After replacing hard drive on MacBook Pro 13 inch early 2011 model, the screen only boots to the apple logo.  Do I need to re-install the OS?

The problem is that the OS is not in any where else of the MacBook Pro than in the HD / SSD. If you replace the Hard Drive, then you will need to Re-install OSX into that hard drive, it's pretty easy.
    1) Power up your Macbook Pro, as fast as you can press and hold the Option key (ALT). You'll see that it opens the bootable-devices you have, you'll see a Recovery partition, click it.
(If the Hard Drive contains data do the following)
    2) In the menu select Disk Utility.
    3) In Disk Utility go ahead and select the Hard Drive that is inside the MBP.
    4) Erase the content.
(If the Hard Drive contains no data continue with the following jumping the last 3 steps).
    5) Select Re-install OSX.
    6) Select the Hard Drive in which you want to install it.
Follow the steps of everything else (it should take approximately 1 hour to do the whole thing).
    Hope this helps!

  • Replacement hard drive not shown in Disk Utility

So I just finished installing a replacement hard drive for my PB 12". I got a Seagate 2.5" ATA Momentus 5400 etc as per my previous thread. But after firing it up from the install disk, the new volume fails to show up. Anyone else had this problem? And fixed it? Opening up the case again now...

Don't know if your problem solved. Had the same thing happen to me. Was told that new HD was bad (unlikely), Logic board was bad (disaster). Then finally was tole by another tech (OWC) that it sounded like a bad cable connection. Took it apart again and reseated both ends of HD cable a couple of times. Started up and the HD recognized by disk utility. Works great since. Hope your problem as simple as mine.

Here are answers to your question.
    1) You can upgrade to 500GB and its possbile without any problems
    2) No constraints on size or make. You can use any brand or manufacturer of your own choice
    3) You need to install your OS using recovery disks. There is a guide available over here
    4) There will not be any problems if you using recovery disks on new HDD
    5) There wont be any conflict. If you do face any issues, you can always post your query on the forums.
    6) Unfortunately there is no other way. If the HDD test fails, it means its gone. Only option is to replace HDD.

    You're welcome, Tim.
What operating system are you installing on the machine?
The specs state it shipped with W7 Basic.  That OS should load without issues.
If you are trying to install XP, it will not install unless you load the SATA ACHI drivers either at the F6 prompt or you need to slipstream them into a copy of your XP installation.
If you are attempting to install XP, please read this link below and that should solve that issue.
Your notebook has the Intel NM10 Express Chipset.

    Hi
Please boot unit to Bios using F10 key once unit is powered on go to Diagnostics check if the Hard Drive is getting detected. If not getting detected reseat the HDD & check if not issue with HDD & Solt of HDD.
If the HDD is getting detected under Bios please run the HDD test check if that passed.
Then under system configaration change the Boot order to CD/DVD to be First.
Insert the CD restart the unit or press Esc Button unit should detect the RCD in drive and give you the recovery option still does not work issue with DVD/HDD.

  • Ibook not booting, replacing hard drive doesn't help

This one's got me stymied. It's my sister's computer (ibook g4 14" 933mhz 150gb hard drive, 640mb ram). Here are the symptoms:
    1. Starts up past the apple gray screen to a blue screen.
    2. Won't start up from CD either (except hardware test CD)
    3. Started in verbose mode, it comes up with a couple of errors (one about applers232 something or other and the other about applepmuuser). If they would be helpful, I can reboot a couple of times to get them better (it boots past the verbose stuff to a bluescreen).
    Fixes attempted:
    1. Replaced hard drive (reinstalled os x 10.3 via target disk mode from another ibook g4)
    2. Ran Hardware test, no problems detected
    3. Booted into single user mode, fsck checks out fine (several times)
    4. Ran disk utility (via target disk mode) and it comes up clean (not surprisingly)
    5. Reset pram
    6. Reset nvram

Are you able to boot the iBook with the other Mac utilizing TDM?
If you've not tried that, then that would be my next step. Set up the other Mac for TDM then plug it into the iBook, boot the iBook while holding the option key until you get to the startup mangaer, select the TDM Mac-drive and continue. This will help you determine if the logicboard is shot. If it runs ok with the other Mac in TDM then it most likely is not the logic board, unless its the IDE controller on the board.

I went to Mac Store and had replaced hard drive because I encountered 4HDD ERROR(hard drive failure). I had backed up my old hard drive by TIME MACHINE regularly. Now how can I restore everything I had?

    Thanks for your response.
I had tried COMMAND+ALT+R which led me to directly to INTERNET RECOVERY via wifi. After 1 hour or so it dropped me at the same point.
I've tried MIGRANT ASSISTANCE as well, it kept on LOOKING FOR OTHER COMPUTERS even though I clicked on TIME MACHINE BACK UP USING EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE
    so what to do now?
P.S. Guys at MacStore were so careless to even listen to me when I asked them about retrieving back up :(
    Please help
