Problems resetting login password

I have apparently forgotten my login password for my Mac Air.  When following the instructions to reset my password using my Apple ID, step 2 says "In the login window, click the question mark in the password field, and then click the arrow in the dialog that appears.", however, there is no question mark in the password field, so, my attempts to reset my password have been unsuccessful. Does anyone have a suggestion on what I should do or try?

very strange. this should have worked. try doing it from single user mode then.
restart and hold command+S at the chime. you'll see a black screen with white text. at the prompt enter
/sbin/mount -uw /
next enter
passwd username
where username is the short name of the admin user. enter new password for that user when prompted for it. when done enter
reboot

  • Having problem resetting my password

I couldn't login my account with my password.
So I clicked on the button to reset my password. However, when I got the email and I clicked on the link or entered the given code manually, the system just says that my account does not exist! I thought I deleted my account, so I tried to use my email to create new account but the system says that there is an existed account associated with my email.
    What should I do guys?
Now I got a new account with another email address but all my contacts were in the older account.
Is there a possibility that someone hacked my account???

Ahmed, surely if those are your "life time" contacts, you have them stored somewhere else besides a phone, which can break, get lost or stolen, or have a software problem.
If you've been using your phone as recommended, you've been synching your contacts with your computer (Address Book, Outlook) or with a cloud service (Google, iCloud).  Your contacts should be nice and safe on your computer or in the cloud.  Just resynch them to your phone.
If you have NOT been using your phone as recommended, and you are unable to restore your phone from the previous backup, then you have unfortunately learned the hard way how foolish it was to not use your phone as intended to keep your data safe.

  • Having Problems Resetting My Password

    Hey Guys,
Can't remember the password to the admin account on the computer. Read on resetting the password using the install disc, but automatic login is set to "on" so when I restart the computer and hold down the "c" key, it just boots up like normal without going to the utilities page. Any recommendations? Thanks guys.

  • Resetting login & password

I have a 2006 MacBook Pro OS X. I no longer have the startup cd. I have not used the computer since early 2010 due to a broken display. I recently hooked it up to a non apple monitor and have forgotten my login and password. How do I go about creating a new one w/ out the cd?

Wow.  You are making many of us strain our brains.  10.3...  Time to upgrade.
So yes, the CD should allow for password recovery.  This is the days of NetInfo (how I miss it so).  You are actually able to reset the password using Single User mode and a bit of terminal magic.  Follow these steps if you don't have the disk.
1:  Boot into Single User Mode by holding down Apple - S on startup.
2: Mount the file system so you can write to it with this command:
              mount -uw /
3: Next start the NetInfo subsystem by typing the following command:
              /sbin/SystemStarter
4: You will see a bunch of messages go by.  Eventually the logging will stop but you will not get a command prompt.  When the messages stop, simply hit the Return key.  This will drop you out of the previous command and present you with a command prompt.  The last line I think states System Started.
5: If you know the short name of the user type this command to reset the password, replacing shortname with the user's shortname:
              passwd shortname
6: You will be prompted to enter a password.  The input is shadowed so type carefully.
7: You must confirm the password.
8: When finished, type reboot to reboot the system.

  • Problem Resetting Admin Password

UGH, So I forgot my admin password and followed the directions online, or at least I tried. The problem was that in doing so, I could not figure out how to reset the password without re-installing snow leopard 10.6.3 . I now think that I did something wrong because I cannot find the ITunes icon on my desktop and some other icons are not showing up as previous. Help! Do I need to uninstall or something? I'm not very computer savvy so I need detailed instructions!

  • Thank you MrHoffman. I still have a problem with login password.

Thank you Mr.Hoffman. I understand now. However, I do not log in when I boot up. I have no idea what my login password could be. I have never to my knowledge entered one, nor do I know how to. MACs are so cryptic, in addition to being different. So what do I do now? Where do I find my login info or how do I initiate it? Thanks in advance.

I need to reset a password on a OS X server 10.3, so I can log into it. Is it the same as when you want to do a password reset on a MacBook, Mac mini etc.. where you boot off the cd and use the password reset utility? I have no idea what the admin password is, so that is why I need to do it.

  • Problems resetting admin password

Earlier today, I changed my account to standard and set up a new administrator account then, like a complete idiot, forgot the password. I've tried using the install disk. When I go to Utilities > Reset password, it says select disc from which to reset password but only the install disk is listed. My startup disk isn't listed. I really don't want to have to do a clean install if I can avoid it. Am I doing something wrong?
    Please help!

  • I have a problem. My Apple ID is not my icloud email address my Apple ID is my msn account, but I need to reset the password for my icloud email because I can't remember what it is. How do I do that?

I have a problem. My Apple ID is not my iCloud email, my msn is my Apple ID, but I need to reset the password for my icloud email address because I can't remember what it is. How can do I reset my iCloud emaill password when it's not my Apple ID??

Your iCloud and @icloud.com login ID is an Apple ID. Go to http://appleid.apple.com and sign in with the ID you use to sign into iCloud (you can check this by going to http://www.icloud.com and signing in there).
Click 'Password & Security' in the sidebar and you will be able to change the password.
    HOWEVER
Before you do this you must turn off 'Find My iPhone/iPad/iMac' if you have it enabled on any of your devices, otherwise you will land yourself in difficulties.

You can email iTunes (they don't have a telephone department and no one has access to that information) and they can verify your account.
Here is the link to email them:
