Problems restarting iMac with iPod plugged in after last software update

Hi everyone,
I have an almost 2 year old 24" iMac Intel, running OS X 10.4.11 and a 30gb iPod video.
I've been having problems with restarting after the last software update. When I went to restart my computer as required for the update, it shut down, started up (the start up sound came on) and then went to just a blue screen for about 10 minutes or more. I got worried and shut down by holding the power button. Then I turned it back on and the same thing happened. So I shut down with the power button again, unplugged my iPod and external HD, turned the computer back on, and everything started up as normal. So I figured it had to do with one of those. I found that when I've started up with the external HD plugged in everything is fine, but every time I restart with my iPod plugged in, the same thing happens!
This has never happened before, and I've never had problems with my iMac before this... Can anyone help?
Thank you!

Hi, try-> System Preferences->Start Up Disk->ensure OS is highlited.
Some Macs find it difficult to Start/ReBoot when an iPhone or iPod is connected, it's as though the computer is searching to boot from an external HD. I would Repair Permissions & do the SMC reset.
Leave the iPod/iPhone unplugged @ reboot...L

I can't get my computer to recognize my iPod 4 touch after I do a software update.  The iPod goes into restore mode and the the computer won't recognize the iPod no matter what USB port I'm pluged into, or if I reboot the iPod, the computer, or iTunes.

Please don't get fancy with the font.  It's hard to read.

  • Brand New 27" iMac i5 will not boot after installing software updates

I just purchased my new iMac 2 nights ago. I have been getting it setup with my apps, mobile me account, etc, and luckily just setup time machine and let it do a full backup.
I just ran Software Update for the first time, and now the machine will not boot. It hangs on the grey screen for about 1 minute before the Apple logo comes up. About 30 seconds after the Apple logo comes up, the grey spinning gear shows up, and about 1 minute after that I get the grey screen of death (You must restart your computer).
Any suggestions? A little frustrated here....

If you mean did I receive error messages, No, I didn't. However, the desktop reverted to the default purple night-sky looking thing, my applications and such all disappeared from the dock, and I couldn't open any files or folders (you don't have permission to ...), etc. I tried signing out and back in, rebooting, using a second admin account on the computer, creating a new admin account, etc. I ran Disk Utility, hardware checker, etc. No errors were found, and nothing changed. I could see all my files and folders, but they had a small red circle in the corner, indicating "locked" or "no permission".
I'll find the lines from the console log if that will help. The error showed up immediately and is in the computer's attempt to access the user/library/application support/sync services and same path to user/library/logs/sync services/log. (or something reasonably close to this. If you can use the exact path, I will get it) The link between my settings and files, and a password is apparently corrupted or something, so that the computer won't even let me change the desktop or any file, so I can't save, edit or discard anything, and can't drag files to another computer on the home network.
At least I'm still under the 90 day warranty, so I can call tomorrow. At this point, the SMART check says the drive is good, so I assume it's software. The only things new are the three auto Apple software updates I installed yesterday, so I immediately suspect them. But who knows?
Does this help you at all?

  • IMac doesn't work after last software update

After last Apple software update (new Safari and security stuff), my iMac 20"/2GHz enters in an on/off loop. It starts but it doesn't manage to load the OS, it shuts off, it restarts, it shuts off and so on.
Does anybody have the same problem?
    Thks

Was your update download interrupted in any way? if so, then the computer is trying to find the downloaded files and because the download wasn't completed then it's causing the loop. That's exactly what happened to me. My computer was shutting off intermittent and it did on an update download, so it caused a loop at that's now your case, then never mind.

  • Problems waking up and connecting to internet after MAC Software updates.

My Intel Macbook laptop use to connected to the internet automatically when I turned it on the laptop or woke it up. Now after the last MAC software upgrade this week (which included iTune, iPhoto, MAC 10.4.9 and an Airport upgrade) my PC is having problems connecting to the internet.
It attempts to connect but can't. I end up playing with the settings in Airport internet connections – e.g turning Airport on and off, going to NETWORK -Other and reentering the Network name and wireless security passphrase. Most of the time I have to go into System Preferences – Network and play with these settings e.g. Changing Locations, playing with the network status and eventually, magically it connects and stays connected until the next time I wake up my laptop.
The wireless Macbook laptop is connected to a DLINK Wireless Router (DI-624), using WPA-PSK security. I have tried rebooting both the laptop and the router a number of time and even redid the setting on both the router and laptop.
Is there something else I can check/do??? Can I undo any of the MAC Software updates (thinking about the Airport one)??? I would really like to get back to connecting to the internet automatically.
    Thanks.
    Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Yeah, the 169.254 addy means it isn't getting a DHCP reply, so it's not connected to anything at all.
Is that Interface dragged to the top of Network>Show?Network Port Configurations and checked ON?
The Interface that connects to the Internet, needs to be drug to the top of Network Port Configurations.
Yes those files get recreated on reboot, (unless critical pieces of the OS are missing for it's defaults), but you don't have to trash/delete them, you can just drag them to the desktop!
But after hearing the latest I might try...
/Users/nnnn/Library/Preferences... the whole Prefs folder there.
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration... the whole SysConfig folder.
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.sharing.firewall.plist
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.AppleFileServer.plist
Reboot... of course you dont have to trash them, you can just move them to the desktop to drag back if it doesn't work.

  • 17" iMac (Tiger) won't boot after latest software update

I downloaded the latest Tiger software update on my 17" Intel Core Duo iMac a couple of days ago and after I hit Restart I can't get past the grey Apple loading screen.
I've tried everything it tells me in the manual, pressing various combinations of keys as I turn the computer on, but to no avail. I also put Install Disk 1 in and tried to check hardware from that (pressing D) and tried pressing C too to boot from it, but nothing happens, just the grey apple loading screen. Of course, now the install disk is stuck in there too.
Any clues as to how I can sort this out? I'm still under AppleCare, so if worst comes to worst I'll call UK support and see what they can do, but thought I'd try everything I could at home first.
    TIA.

  • Imac 11,2 running slower after installing software updates

I purchased my imac 11,2 Sept. 2010. I recently downloaded my software updates that included airport utility, itunes and canon printer software update. Since these downloads, the imac has been very slow. Does anybody have any suggestions why my imac runs slower after software updates and what can be done to get my imac back to previous speed.

    isis24680,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Did you run Disk Utility> Repair Permissions? Do you have your eMac in display-only sleep overnight, or use a utility such as OnyX, or otherwise ensure the Unix crom maintenenace scripts run? OS X 10.4.2 (in 7/05) included provision to force the maintenance scripts when sufficiently oberdue; it's possible you're seeing the Mac trying to catch up on a year-plus worth of maintenance.
Do you have anything showing in System Preferences> Others, especially anything that adds to the menu bar? You'll need to check that any add-on system utilities or background programs are updated to run properly under 10.4.6; a quick way to check is to Start Up in Safe Mode and see if performance returns to normal.
Open Applications> Utilities> Activity Monitor, show all tasks, and sort the list by CPU. Is their anything regularly showing up at more than say 15% of the CPU usage?

  • Problems after last software update :o( N8 on PAYG...

Hi, hoping someone can help plz.
Did a recent update on my PAYG o2  N8 (only just realised it was optional!!) and since then my phone has gone crazy, loosing settings etc
It's lost my internet settings and when I launch OVI it does not connect (just blank screen) I have now figured that I can get online by using my wlan (at home) and then opening a page from bookmark, Long winded but works.
As far as MMS goes I cannot send one!! I could okay before the update, but despite getting the settings again from o2 (in case that was the problem -it wasn't) I can't send any it just says failed everytime (
Also, the size of the texting buttons has changed and make it really quite small to text when you have slightly larger fingers, and older (ish) eyes. Anyone else found this a problem?
Any suggestions would be great, was wondering if I could actually restore factory settings or something to get rid of the new software updates, is that possible?
Oh and it keeps switching itself off and it never did before.
I have no nokia centers near me so any help would be great
    Cheers

    @Bellasmum
    Welcome to the forum!
Unfortunately there is nothing you can do about change in texting button size introduced in Symbian Anna update as you can't downgrade the firmware once updated.
If you go to Menu > Settings > Phone > Phone management > Factory settings - you could try "Restore" which is the less destructive of the two available options and default lock code is 12345 unless altered by yourself; more details to be found here:http://europe.nokia.com/support/product-support/n8-00/faq#07
Inability to access Ovi Store can be difficult to resolve if something has gone wrong and you may have to accept workaround for now.
If you go to Menu > Messaging > Options > Settings > Multimedia message > Access point in use - is o2 MMS defined?
Presumably you had not taken a backup of your N8 using Ovi Suite on PC at any stage?

  • Time Capsule not working after last software update

I bought my time capsule 3 weeks ago. Set up and worked like a charm (I use airport express for my wireless network). After I downloaded the latest software updates a week or so ago, I got a message that my computer could no longer recognize my time capsule. Since then the time capsule light only flashes amber and wont appear in airport utility.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

I was having problems with the 7.3.1 firmware as well. For me, in manifest as though the internal disk had went bad--a blinky amber light and a "Disk needs repair" error. Rolling back the firmware solved it for me.
    To do this:
    --Open AirPort Utility.
    --Click on your TC.
--Click on the "Manual Setup" button.
--When the configuration summary pops up, click on the word "Version".
--From the "Upload" drop-down list that is on the new pane that pops up, select "7.3", and click "Ok".
--Once it reboots, it'll be at 7.3.
Hope this helps. I'll be waiting a few weeks after 7.3.2 comes out to upgrade. I'm not real impressed with 7.3.1. As far as I can tell, it broke more than it fixed.

  • Administrator password stopped working after last software update

Since last automatic software update (I know have Mac OS X 10.7.5 in my MacBook Pro), when prompted for the administrator password with new software installation or to unlock the "lock" in the system preferences, the following happens: the password is accepted as valid (no error message appears, and the password window dissapears), but nothing happens:
    - For new software installation, the "Install" button appears again, and upon pressing it, I get prompted again for administrator password, and the process gets looped into these 2 steps.
    - For unlocking the system preferences, the password window gets closed but the preferences are still locked.
It seems that my password is valid, because if I purposedly enter a wrong password it lets me know it is not correct, but it just does not unlock anything or just not get accepted as before!
Now I also see in the tool bar at the top right of the screen my name (I am the administrator and only user, I never created any alternative account), this was not there before.
Can anyone help me to solve this problem, please?
    Thanks!!
    Monica

I guess I misunderstood your original post. You are logged in, but you can't authenticate as an admin.
    Back up all data.
If the user account is associated with an Apple ID, and you know that account password, the Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
Otherwise, boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    resetpassword
That's one word with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window opens.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.
You should now be able to log in with the new password, but if the password is different from the old one, you won't be able to unlock the Keychain. If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as your login password), there's no way to recover it. You’ll need to reset your keychain in the preferences of the Keychain Access application.

  • Time Machine and FileVault: Change after last Software Update?

    Hallo there,
A lot of people seem to switch to Leopard because of Time Machine, but according to the reports, the user experience has got nothing to do with reliability. So let me describe what is going on here concerning Time Machine.
I am using the German Version of Moc OS X Leopard with all recent software updates installed. I will try my best to translate the messages in the user interface. As mentioned above, I work in a user account that is encrypted wih FileVault. For Time Machine I have a 320 GB USB Harddrive from Lacie. Since I am having a MacBookPro, the USB-drive gets connected when I am at home, which means 2 or 3 times a week.
With the first verion of Leopard, everything seemed to work like described: I had to log out of my account and Time Machine would start to write an encrypted sparsebundle to the USB-harddrive. Now, a few updaes later, the situation appears as follows:
1.) When I log out of my account, there is no message that Time Machine backs up my home directory; neither can I notice any activity from the USB drive.
2.) When I open the Time Machine configuration in System Preferences, it tells me in the line with the "Next Backup", that it will start, when "Mac is connected"; but even if the backup drive is connected, nothing seems to happen.
3.) When I click on the padlock in the bottom left corner of the preferenes panel of Time Machine, the padlock will have opened by itself the next time I log in to my account.
4.) When I open the backup drive in the Finder now, I can no longer find the encrypted sparsebundle; instead there is a new folder next to the "Macintosh HD" folder, that holds all the contents of my home directory unencrypted... but: its content is out of date!
If anyone here has an idea what all this means and if there is an option to get an automated backup that really works, I would be glad.
    Thank you.

I can't comment on the history before 10.5.3, but FileVault and TimeMachine are working ok for me with 10.5.3. Not ideally, because TimeMachine backs up only after a log out, and because you can't use the snazzy galaxy interface to restore individual files. However, the problems here have been exaggerated in the blogs. It is easy (and even good practice) to get in the habit of logging out at the end of the day (or even more frequently, as at lunch). TimeMachine will then have a nice series of stored snapshots. Restoration of individual files, rather than the entire volume, requires--gasp--a bit of "manual" activity rather than "galaxy" activity. One opens TimeMachine, figures out what time slice is appropriate, and proceeds by double-clicking to get to the saved volume for that time slice. Then one double-clicks to mount it, entering the password. Then one goes into the mounted disk, finds the file or folder that had accidentally been deleted or corrupted, drags it to the desktop, and then drags it to wherever it should be. Not exactly a big deal. Compared to the non FileVaulted situation, it's clunky, but still very nice in comparison with most backups and infinitely better than depending on occasional backups.

I have a MacBook Air (mid 2011) with last Lion update. After I mede this week sofware update iMovie 11 cannot open, it tries but crash after a few second. • My phone got completely erased after last software update

    Hi,
What's wrong with the latest software update for the iPhone? My phone got completely blocked and had to erase it and can still not activate it. Lost all my data, anyone else experienced this problem?
    Best regards,
    Tim Metz

    Don't quote out of context:
Your follow up indicated that you don't actually have a problem activating your phone at all.
You don't have an activation problem.
At this stage, though, I don't care. Figure it out yourself.
You are the one who is being insulting.
Next time, try clearly outlining EXACTLY what your problem is. You do NOT have an activation problem. You appear to have not bothered to back up or extract your photos before you attempted to update your phone.

  • Tiger doesn't start after last Software Update

    Hi,
this morning I ran the new Update for Tiger and since then the system doesn't restart. Instead it keeps hanging on the grey start-up screen for hours.
    What can I do?
    Regards,

Use Disk Utility to verify/Repair the HD, then Repair Permissions then reboot, if the problems persist try reinstalling the update...
But don't use Software Update to get it, use this...

  • My Imac (OS X 10.7.4) doesn't turn off after last software update.

The problem is this: when I try to turn off my IMac, the desktop disappears and the display becomes white, without anything else. It may stay in this way for several hours, maybe days.
I only can turn it off by pushing the on/off button for ten seconds.
The start up is also very slow.
    Any suggestions?

Try an SMC Reset and a PRAM Reset:
    SMC Reset
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and disconnect attached devices.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
    Reset PRAM
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P and R.
You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
