Problems Restoring From Disc Image

I'm attempting to replace a suspected failing HD on my G5. I made a disc image of the suspected drive in disc untility, and have it on an external drive. I purchased a 500GB WD Cavier Black HD for my new drive. I removed the old drive, and put the new one in. I noticed on the old drive that there was a jumper installed all the way to the right when the drive is installed in the machine. I tried restoring with the jumper installed, and without. I had better luck with the jumper installed. I got an error that said device does not support this action when I tried to restore to the new drive without the jumper installed. Now, without the jumper installed, when I go to restore from my disc image, I get a Restore Failure error saying "An error (2) occurred while copying. (No such file or directory)" Once I click ok, and try it again, I now get a message that says "An error (16) occurred while copying. (Resource Busy)"
Any ideas what my problem would be at this point? It seems as though my .dmg is functioning just fine. It mounts, and looks to have all contents of my old boot drive. The new drive is able to be formatted just fine. Did I buy the wrong tupe of drive? Is it too new?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think you might need a Jumper on pins 5&6 to slow the drive to G5 SATA 1 speeds...

Burning DVD from disc image

I've been burning DVD's from disc images using Encore 1.0 for some time now. ever since I upgraded to 2.0, Encore gives me error messages on my project like:
"first play not set" and
"remote control problem".
I don't see how these messages can appear when I'm using a disc image (i.e. a completed project) as the source. does anyone know?

When you click on the Build DVD button in the Disc panel, Encore does a quick check of errors
in the current project. If you have a new, empty project, you will at least get errors about First Play and Title Remote. Those errors have nothing to do with your disc image, they apply to the current project, from which you are trying to burn your disc image.
These errors may be safely ignored, since they don't have any effect on your disc image.

My HP Pavilion dv6-6c29wm will not restore from disc that was made with HP recovery Manager
Running Windows 7 64-bit on 650gb drive.
Error: "The system media does not support this computer. You are not able to restore this system with the media."
I'm about to order the recovery discs from HP and with any luck be able to bring this laptop back to factory conditionn with all the correct partitions and sizes after I format the hard drive.

Yes our recovery disks will return your unit to the factory state. All the software that came with the unit will be reinstalled. Whatever you added you will have to reinstall.

Created image of volume not drive, is there a way to restore from that image?

Hello so my hdd failed and I made a image of the volume accidentally rather than the drive, now when I try to restore from the image it says that you need to scan image for restore, but everytime I try to do it, it fails. Do you know a way to bypass that and just restore from the volume image? It is possible that i might be able to put back in my old drive and try to image the drive, but i really dont want to have to do it. please let me know

You probably need a partition map and a Recovery HD on the drive, then restore the Volume.

Burning from disc image

Trying to replicate a DVD for which I no longer have the iMovie files - successfully created a 3.44Gb .dmg file, BUT when trying to burn from this, I get "buffer underrun" messages. There is >17 Gb free space on the hard drive. Also, I am unable to copy the .dmg file to an external drive with 18 Gb free space as after about 2Gb it fails with an error message that the drive is full. Something funny about that disc image file?

I am using Disc Utility as per those directions, and this has worked with no problems on similar DVDs.
I also suggest you get the free download Mac Sweeper which you will find on http://mac.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/Mac-Sweeper.shtml
Then:
1) Shut down/Restart without any applications running.
2) Run Mac Sweeper carrying out all the optimize options including repair permissions and, under clean, empty caches.
3) Now do your disc copy with nothing else running.
Onyx will have the same functions as Mac Sweeper. This is a bit of an overkill but it will give your system every chance of a trouble free burn.

Having problems burning/creating disc image in iDVD 6

I am currently experience new problems trying to burn or create a disc image in iDVD 6. I have successfully burned iDVD projects in the past with the same computer/iDVD 6. The iDVD project looks like it is processing normally, even creates a labled disc image- but when you click on it, it reads "My Great DVD", and the video and audio files are also unreadable or absent- the error message for the VIDEO_TS.VOB file I pulled up read, "There is no default application specified to open the document "VIDEO_TS.VOB".
My older son just got Toast 7 Titanium for me, so I have that resource. I also just bought extra memory to bring me up to 1.25 GB, and an external hard drive with 320 GB. I have a younger son and a friend who will need me to make a dance audition DVD for a CA college dance department that must be in So Cal by 1-19-07, so you can imagine I'm getting a bit nervous about this. I have verified permissions, reinstalled iDVD from the original, and re-done the original iMovie/iDVD project that first caused the problems- a 12.8 GB project (but have not re-done things since I got more memory on my computer). I don't know how big the audition DVD's will be, but estimate they won't be that big (hopefully), but will consist of many short clips/chapter headings. I know just enough about computers to know what I don't know, so would really, really appreciate some basic help!

I don't know what you expect. You're looking for a problem where there isn't one.
The AUDIO_TS folder SHOULD be empty and (unless you've installed spercial software) you WON'T have any application to open the VIDEO_TS.VOB.
If you want to play the disk image, open Apple's DVD player application and then use it to open the VIDEO_TS folder.

Problem restoring from TM

Hi There,
I am having trouble restoring my system with 10.5 and Time Machine. I installed a new hard drive in my powerbook 15 and formated the new disk using disk utility (OSX Extended - Journaled). I can see the new drive fine in Disk Utility.
Then I try to restore from time machine. I select the backup I want to restore from and it goes off spinning away calculating the space required. This happens in a window which is called "Select a Destination"
My problem is that it never comes up with any options for the destination drive, even though it should be able to see my new hard drive. So I can't recover.
Any help apreciated!

Hello, we really need to repair the Disk first thing, there are 2 ways without th Install Disc...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
Or...
Does it boot to Single User Mode, CMD+s keys at bootup, if so try...
/sbin/fsck -fy
Repeat until it shows no errors fixed.
(Space between fsck AND -fy important).
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck...

Making Playable DVD From Disc Image

A friend of mine has an iDVD project but his mac cannot burn dvds. So he gave me the file as a disc image. I dragged and dropped the disc image to the dvd and hit burn. It does not play as a dvd in a player or in frontrow on my mac. When I double click on it the disc image is on the dvd. Did I make a data dvd instead? How do I make a playable dvd from a disc image?
Also, is going the disc image route the easiest way to transfer an iMovie or iDVD project to another mac. I did it this way because my mac does not have some of the music or photos on it that are linked to the project file. In Garage Band you can save as archive when transferring a file to another mac and it saves all the loops, etc in the file. There must be something similar in iDVD.

Video DVDs are written in the UDF format. That's why you must use Apple's Disk Utility to burn a disk image to writable media correctly.
In burning from the Finder, you have created a data DVD in Mac OS Extended format that will NOT play in set-top DVD players (as you have found out).

Burning from disc image: do I mount it first or not?

I'm sure this is a dumb question, but I don't want to waste my few remaining Apple DVDs testing the two options. I made my home movie into a disc image because I needed to use the professional setting to make a longish movie fit on a single-layer disc. So now I want to burn it. iDVD '08 says to do this from within Disk Utility. But nowhere can I find out whether or not I need to mount the disk and burn the mounted disk so that just the audio_ts and video_ts folders are on the DVD or whether I should burn the file that ends in .img directly to the DVD instead. I'm confused. If somebody could just walk me through the steps, I'd very much appreciate it. Please assume total ignorance.

Just a suggestion...... You can take it or leave it (your choice).
If I were burning an image or making a Dvd copy for my in-laws to play on their Sony set top dvd player as opposed to a mac, I wouldn't use the Finder nor apple's disc utility (not that either approach won't work .... most of the time it will).
It's just that I get slightly better (if not more predictable) results with Roxio Toast to burn the image to Dvd-R while lowering the burn speed to 4x or lower and using quality media like Verbatim or Maxell.

Finder crashes when trying to open disc mounted from disc image

I downloaded a disc image of an application I need to install (Verizon Access Manager). Image downloads fine and when I double click it, it mounts the applicaiton disc. But if I try to open the application disc, it crashes the Finder.
I checked both the disc image and the disc it created with Disk Utility and they both come back clean.
Not sure what to do.

Might open Activity Monitor in Utilities & see if you can force Quit/Restart Finder there, but might try this...
First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if Finder & Search work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist

Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.
If that doesn't work my next guess would be maybe Spotlight is messed up.

Disk Utility Restore from Sparse Image taking forever

I created a sparse image backup of my MBP C2D using SuperDuper! before sending the laptop back to Apple for repair. I wiped the drive clean before shipping. I now have the laptop back and am trying to restore the sparse image to the HD.
The sparse image file is on an HD in my G5 tower and is just over 108 GB. I booted the G5 into target disk mode and connected it to my MBP via FW800. I then booted off the Leopard install disk and launched Disk Utility to do the restore.
The sparse image mounts fine in Disk Utility and is specified as my source for the restore.
I started this restore last night before I checked out for the night and when I got up this morning, Disk Utility showed about 35-40% of the image had been restored and 14 HOURS were remaining. That seems a little excessive after it had already been running for well over 9 - 10 hours.
The sparse image mounts on the MBP just fine using target disk mode from my G5 -- so as far as can tell, my backup image itself is ok.
My question is this: is the Restore function performance of Disk Utility with sparse images really this bad or is something wrong with what I am doing? I really don't want to rebuild my laptop from scratch, but if I have to wait 34 or more hours for Disk Utility to finish a restore -- it might be quicker to rebuild it.
Any ideas out there?

no the restore function is not this bad.
something must be wrong with your sparse image. you should have tested it before sending the computer for repairs. and why did you use a sparse image at all?! you should have made (and tested) a standard clone.

Superduper backup to disk image then restore from disk image

Im trying to get bootcamp to work but it told me to backup, format and restore. Im currently copying my data to a disk image. Am i able to restore this or is it pointless?

You can do it your way, but the intended way is to use FileVault to encrypt your Home folder. When you log out of your account then TM will begin the backup of the encrypted Home folder. No need for you to encrypt or decrypt your own disc image.
If you allow TM to run hourly backups as you now do, then both your Home folder and your backups are not secure.

Can i restore from sparse image to raid0 array

im tring to boot from the SL disk and restore my disk image to my raid0
or will it break my raid0?

Your RAID should have been built with SL to begin with in order to work.
Why not boot from a bootable backup instead? a must for anyone but esp. running RAID.
You will need to erase, so you should recreate the array anyway.

Restore from disk image on external hard drive

I have a early 2011 macbook pro and the internal hard drive failed. I installed OS X mavericks on an external hard drive (1) and I boot from the external drive (1). On a different external hard drive (2), I have a disk image of my macintosh HD (the computer's original hard drive with all my data on it) How do I go about restoring from the disk image on the external drive(2) to external hard drive (1)?
I want to be able to boot from the external hard drive (1) and have all my data that I backed up as a disk image on external hard drive (2)

I put the disk image in the source field and "backup" , the external drive I want it on, in the destination field
When I try to use disk utility it says it must scan the disk image first, then says "Unable to scan "Backup" (resource busy)"
"Backup" is the name of the external HD I am booting off of, which makes sense that it says resource busy. So how is this done?

Problem restoring from Time Capsule

A software update killed my CPU--it messed up the disk permissions and I have tried everything to fix the problem including going through all the single user mode, safe mode, etc. stuff. I got it to the point where I can log in as a new user and see my whole drive, but cannot access my account.
After waiting over an hour at the apple store to see if they could check out the problem (I was told when I arrived that I could see someone within 30 minutes even though I didn't have an appointment), I gave up and went back home to restore from my TM backup.
Well, my luck with Apple continues. Though my Time Capsule shows up when I log in as a new user, when I boot from the Leopard DVD and click "Restore from a System Backup" the "Slect Backup Source" screen doesn't show my Time Capsule drive. In the space under "Backups" it says "Searching for Time Machine backups" without any status bar. The "connect to remote disk" is grayed out.
Any tips for how to fix this? The problem has been going on for days and since I use my Mac for work it is a major inconvenience. I am a life long Mac user, but this experience is making me consider going to Windows. Ugh.

Easiest thing is to schedule a Genius Bar appointment online and carry the Mac and TC into the Apple Store. My experience is that they are happy to help. (Appointments have always available same day in my city.)
The other free option is to call Apple Care.
With recent Mac success, I would not go in for tech support without an appointment. It will only result in aggravation for you and the geniuses (as you found out) as they focus their energy on those with appointments. People would not take their car into a dealer and expect instant troubleshooting without an appointment but they do for their Macs (?).
