Problems Restoring to Backups

Yesterday I went into an Apple Store for a warranty service on my iPhone 4S.  It was an older phone and the lock screen button had become stuck and unusable. Knowing that I might be getting a new phone I backed up my iPhone to both iCloud and iTunes. Because the phone was under warranty, Apple replaced the phone which fixed the hardware problem I was having.
I activated the new phone on my network and tried to restore it to my original settings when I got home. However after following the initial steps of the setup assistant I reached the point where I needed to chose what file to backup from. To my surprise there was no option for an iCloud backup at all (this is what I am more familiar with and planned to use). Because I also had a recent iTunes backup, I decided to proceed in the process with that file. When the phone finished restoring many of my apps were missing or not updated. My wifi was greyed out/disabled and the phone generally was nothing like the one I had backed up originally.
I don't know if I'm missing something basic, but my setup assistant does not have any iCloud restoration options. My computer registers a complete backup in iTunes under the Device Preferences page. I don't have any other recent iTunes backups. If someone could help me get my backups operating fully on the new phone that would be fantastic.
The Geniuses at the Apple Store made this sound easy and didn't offer any words of advice. Apple had kind of let me down on this so far so any help at all would be appreciated.

Backups are responsible for saving all user settings including apps stored on the phone and the data associated to those apps. ckuan is correct in saying iTunes or the App Store is responsible for pushing the apps back to the device when restoring. The apps should be greyed out when a restore first begins, be patient as it can take a while for them to install.
When you have greyed out wifi, that means your phone has lost track of the wifi antenna attached to the logic board. This could be due to your backup, meaning that it could be a corrupted backup, or it could be a hardware failure which sometimes happens when you bring a corrupted backup to a new device. I have had this happen to me several times on replacement devices in the years I have used since the iPhone 3G.
My recommendation would be to ensure your backup's timestamp in iTunes is the one you'd like. If that checks out I would recommend attempting another restore by erasing all content and settings on your device. Go to Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content and Settings. After that attempt to go through the process of setting up your phone. This would allow you first to ensure the WiFi antenna is recognized by connecting to a WiFi network in range(preferably yours). Then I would recommend attempting an iCloud restore. Good luck.

  • Problem Restoring iTunes backup from DVD

I've searched and haven't seemed to find an answer to my particular issue, so if this has been asked and answered apologies. Here's my situation:
I am able to backup my entire library on my windows computer to move everything over to my imac. During the backup I didn't get any error messages. I restore the backup from DVD but for some reason one of the disks just will not restore and I have to keep skipping it. I can open it up and I see the files there, compilation folder with songe folders inside, some audio books, an album or two purchased from iTunes and a few albums from CDs that I actually own the physical media. I presume something is corrupted but don't know what.
My question is this: has anyone else experienced a similar situation and if so, were you able to get the disk to restore? If not, is there a way that I can select just the items from this bad disk to backup so that I don't have to do the entire back up again? As previously mentioned, I can browse the "bad" DVD and can see the items and folders? At the very least, I'd like to backup and restore the itunes purchased music and audio books and compilations; the other items I can just import from the cds that I own.
Thanks...I'm really getting frustrated after having tried this five or six times.

  • Problem restoring iTunes backup from DVD - please help.

    Hi all,
My iTunes library is currently on our laptop. I've used the iTunes backup wizard to create two backup DVD's using the internal Optiarc DVD writer.
When I try to restore the DVD's on my new PC, iTunes freezes up for about 10 minutes with the DVD/CD-RW combo drive very active.
After about 10 minutes iTunes gives the error message "The disc "Backup2008-09-08" cannot be read. An unknown error occured (-50)."
The DVD set opens okay in iTunes on the laptop. I've tried using both iTunes 7.7 and 7.5 on the PC for the restore with the same error.
I can also see the contents of the DVD on the new PC - but it says "Files 'currently' on the CD' at the top of the windows - does this mean that the DVD has not been finalised by the laptop?
Any help, as always, greatfully appriciated.
    Cheers,
    Steve.

  • Problem restoring from backup.

Hi, I am using Leopard and before performing a synch to a mobile device, I backed-up the iCal database. There were a lot of duplicate to dos during the sync process.
I tried to restore from the backup, but I get the bar with blue and white moving and after 20 minutes nothing happens. The application IS responding, but no results take place. Needless to say, this is critical for me, since I have now over 300 tasks that are duplicated, etc.
    Thanks for your help.

I'm having the exact same problem. Tried trashing the preferences, didn't help.

  • Restore iTunes backup from Time Machine?

It all began when I noticed the YouTube app was missing on my 1st gen iPad (iOS 5.1.1). Couldn't figure out how to reload just the app, so I decided to restore the iPad. I did this last week, when I had the iPad replaced at the AppleStore, and had no problems restoring from backup.
This time, however, when the restore operation finished, only a handful of the several dozen apps had been restored (and YouTube was still missing). Now I'm thinking that the backup didn't properly complete before the restore operation was started, and this incomplete backup is now the default.
Is it possible to retrieve an older backup (yesterday) from Time Machine. Is that possible? Hate to think I've permanently lost all my data in all those apps.

telling me to buy a new router is NOT a solution.
And why not? Apple is selling these things like BigMacs. They can't make enough of them. You've been suffering since May because you refuse to get a decent router.
Can you imagine if a company that makes a refrigerator told me that I needed to upgrade my electrical system to rectify a problem with their device? What kind of response IS that?!?!
What if the problem with their device is that it requires a new-fangled "grounded" outlet and your circa 1890 house doesn't have grounded outlets. Would you refuse to purchase a $ 25 adapter on principle?

  • Error code 0x800700B7 with System Restore and Backup problems

My OS is Vista Ultimate. 2GB RAM. 13GB free space on C Drive. I am unable to use System Restore or Backup and Restore center. When I try to create a Restore Point (or do a backup) error message comes up 'Could not create the scheduled task for the following reason: Cannot create a file when that file already exists. (0x800700B7).' I think (not sure) that these problems came after I was infected with win32:Vitro virus. (No longer any infections showing). I think that my registry may be corrupt or files deleted. Can anyone help please?

    Hi,
    Thank you for your post.
Based on my research, I would like to suggest the following:
Note: Please perform a complete system backup first. If any unexpected issue occurs, we can quickly restore the system to the current status.
    1.     Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in the Programs list.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
    2.     In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Schedule\TaskCache
    3.     Right click on this key and select "Export" and save the key to a Flash Drive or other removable storage device.
    4.     Remove the key “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Schedule\TaskCache\Tree\Microsoft\Windows”
    5.     Please reboot the computer and check if the issue reoccurs. If it works, please also reconfigure the Scheduled Task for System restore in Task Scheduler.
    Hope this helps. Thanks.

Is it a problem to restore a backup from an iPhone 4 with IOS 7.1 to iPhone 5S with IOS 7.0.1 ?

Yes. You cannot Restore a Backup to an Earlier version of iOS.
Your iPhone 5s needs to have iOS 7.1 to match your iPhone 4 on iOS 7.1

  • Problem Restoring Time Machine Backup

    Hi All,
I have just tried everything in the existing discussions but nothing seems to fix my problem. So I hope some brainiacs here can help me.
I have lost all my personal MobileMe calendars when I left the calendar beta. So then I wanted to restore my backup. I opened the finder and replaced all the folders and files containing iCal data (preferences, calenders folder, the works).
When I restart iCal after the backup has been replaced, I get to see my calendars for 5 seconds. Then it disappears again. The MobileMe section of my iCal shows the spinning wheel (why is it spinning?), and it's gone. My sync with MobileMe is turned off, so that's not the issue.
I have tried everything. And most frustrating is to know that all my calendars are nicely stored in my backup, but that I can't get to them!
    Thanks for any help!
    Niels

To restore from a TM backup select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for 'time machine.' From the list of articles select the one on restoring your data. Also:
See User Tips for Time Machine for help with TM problems. Also you can select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "time machine" to locate articles on how to use TM. See also Mac 101- Time Machine.
You cannot restore from a TM backup using the Finder. You must use the procedure you find outlined in the help article or in the user tips referenced above.

  • Restoring from backup problems

    hi,
ive had to restore my iphone4 to factory settings.
but when i have come to restore it from an itunes backup after about forty minutes of restoring it has given me a message about my backup being corrupt.
HOW has it managed to be corrupted?
    is this an itunes problem?
i tried again, and now the process fails to get past 'estimated time remaining'
i am fast losing patience with apple...

That's most likely why iTunes will not permit you to restore that backup to your replacement phone. No real good solution here, there are programs that will permit you to extract data from your iPhone backup(not supported by Apple), but unfortunately there is no way to add this data back to your phone(SMS, Call History, etc.). Here's one example:

  • Problem restoring from  tape a backup with different retention days

As part of our procedure to test data restore for the SAP platform, recently we tried to restore a backup of the QAS SAP database from tape but had problems . During the analysis we think this problem happened because the retention of the backup on tape differs from the one in the configuration of SAP initSID.utl file; originally, the backup was made to a virtual tape using the brbackup tool /expiration parameter of 3 days, then cloned to a physical tape with a longer retention (30 days).
As a temporary solution to restore the data, we extended the u2018expirationu2019 parameter in the brbackup/brrestore configuration file (.utl) and since we still had the logs of the original backup (.anf file), we were able to complete the restore succesfully. We then changed back to the original the expiration time in the .utl file
We need to run the restore option in Production (PRO) environment but still we are not sure if this workaround is acceptable. Does anyone know if this option is correct or if thereu2019s another known solution for this case
