Problems retrieving backup from Time Machine, Case-sensitive HD

Hello.
I'm trying to manually retrieve the information I got in a Time Machine, but for some reason I kept getting an error saying that there were files that were going to the same location were named in the same way. After checking a couple of things I noticed that, somehow, the external HD was Case-sensitive, so I'm assuming that, instead of +File, File 01 File 02+ it's sorted out like +File, file, filE+, and since the computer's HD is normal it's having a conflict with those file names.
That being said, is there a way to fix this? What I'm trying to move is an iTunes and iPhoto Library, "probably" iTunes could be done manually, but in iPhoto there's over 10 GB of pictures and I'd probably take a looooong while to fix it manually.
Any work around?
Thanks!

Hi Adrian ...
Let me see if I can help ...
I'm trying to manually retrieve the information I got in a Time Machine, ...
How? With the TM App or from the Finder?
but for some reason I kept getting an error saying that there were files that were going to the same location were named in the same way.
It's just letting you know that the original file, on the System HD, still exists and wants your permission to over write the original file with the TM file. Backing up your System HD to TM should not have changed any of the original file names. If TM had changed the Case when backing up from your System then TM Restore would have duplicate these files/folders without even asking you.
That being said, is there a way to fix this?
Yes. After you have restored the files/folders that you want to keep you can reformat the TM HD. Or try one of my tricks which is to just reformat the free space. Use the Mac OS X Extended (Journaled).
Good Luck.

  • Retrieving files from Time Machine after updating to Snow Leopard

Updated my 2 year old iMac to Snow Leopard and erased the hard disk first to do a clean start. Having carried out all the updates and loaded on iLife11 tried to use the migration assistant to retrieve data from Time Machine backup but will only find the updated iMac! How do I get it to retrieve from previous Time Machine backups? Know they are on the external Hard Drive somewhere as it still has 400GB on it. Thanks

+Setup Assistant+ and +Migration Assistant+ automatically use the most recent backup. There's no choice. See #19 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Your best bet is to do a +full system restore+ per #14 in the FAQ. Choose the last backup before the upgrade. That will, of course, put you back on Leopard.
Then just install Snow Leopard (there are no +Erase and Install+ or +Archive and Install+ options anymore). That will install the new version of OSX, without touching anything else.
Potential problems with using +Migration Assistant+ (after setting-up a user account), are that you end up with an extra account; and the accounts you migrate may not be recognized as the same ones as on your backups or other volumes, and won't have the proper permissions to them.

  • Can i retrieve items from time machine into mavericks

    Dear people
I am looking to install mavericks but don't want to do a clean install, ( i will if it messes my machine up though ).
    If i install mavericks i take it that;
A: all the apple apps will still work.
B: if it is messed up then i wil be able to retrieve items from time machine back up.
C: is it worth doing a seperate back up to a hard drive other than by time machine.
D: i previously installed my last software via a clean install, as the upgrade to mountain lion messed up my emails
is it better to do a clean install or are the problems with email boxes etc not relevant in this up date.
    Thank you

All the Apple apps will still work- that's a very positive, hopeful statement. Probably they will.
You should be able to retrieve something from your TIme Machine backup. Yes.
A duplicate backup: it depends on how criticially important your data is, and how paranoid you are. One backup is good enough for me.
I am a fan of the clean install. However, I did not do one this time with Mavericks. Lazy. But it works fine.
I would suggest that you restart in safe mode, though, before running the installer. I couldn't get the installer to work until I did.
Regarding a clean install vs. an update install, I think you are asking the wrong question. My opinion is that the vast majority of problems that people have with their Macs are due to:
crapware. I will elaborate on this if you want more. If not, stop reading now.
Crapware = unneeded "haxies", "cleaners", "optimizers", "defragmenters", antivirus software, and GUI modifiers. These are usually poorly written, typically ports from the Microsoft world. They are unnecessary and usually cause problems. They can be impossible to uninstall. They are popular with recent converts from the Microsoft world. I avoid them. My mac almost never, ever has any kind of problem, and I use it a lot, and not just for word processing and checking my email. I do audio recording and editing and some video editing too.
So I do not think the problems people report are due to the OS itself. People want to blame the OS, but I think it's unreasonable for Apple to be able to control and supervise every software developer on the planet.
I would suggest: if you have crapware on your computer, do a clean install, and then don't reinstall the crapware. Just my 2 cents.
If you don't have crapware, the Mavericks upgrade will probably work fine.
a good backup, Time Machine or otherwise, is always a good idea, especially when installing a new OS.

It depends how you installed it.
If you installed from your iLife 11 DVD, then you can insert the DVD and install it again.
If you purchased it from the Mac App Store, you can open the Mac App Store, go to the Purchases tab, and reinstall from there.

  • Cannot retrieve files from Time Machine.

I cannot retrieve files from Time Machine. I can enter it, but the arrows don't seem to function and when I click on a date/time, nothing happens.

I don't know what you mean by "arrows". After Entering TM, put your pointer over one of the coloured (usually purple) dated bars at the right of the screen. That will bring (usually the desktop) for that date to the front. Navigate in the usual way to find the old file, select it, and press the big Restore button on the bottom left of your screen. As I remember it, a copy of that file will appear beside the current original with something like "Restored" added to is title. When you quit TM (Cancel) that restored file should appear beside its current version. (Or, if it's host folder has been deleted, smewhere else but I can't remember where - search for it.)

  • If you remove a backup from Time Machine, can you add it later?

if you remove a backup from Time Machine, can you add it back later? I have two backup sets active, but only one is connecting to a drive at the moment. It seems to be pausing TM for the inactive one, which is as I would expect, except that the menu icon for TM shows an exclamation point (= "waiting to backup"). I'd rather have that error / pause sign show if the ACTIVE connected drive is experiencing issues. It has zero diagnostic function as currently set up.
The solution would be to remove the backup drive from the TM list and then add it back later. I am just unsure if I can do this (will TM recognize the alternate backup set again if I re-add it?)

    Yes, you can re-add it.

  • Deleting Backups from Time Machine to Make Room

Deleting Backups from Time Machine to Make Room
So, I went into my 1.5 terabyte back-up drive and deleted a number of the TM backups because the drive was getting too full. (I also use that drive to store “permanent” photo files in other folders.)
Evidently, the computer does not recognize the deletions because the drive shows the same miniscule amount of space as it did prior to the deletions.
I know people have talked about using “actions” button in the gear icon. However, I can’t find that.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.
    Tek

    Thanks for the reply, V.K.
    Unfortunately, I deleted via the finder and then emptied the trash. :-}
I know now, (after the fact) that this was the wrong thing to do. However, I didn’t find a “delete” option within TM.
It all seemed “logical” at the time. . . and quite frankly, still does. Why the heck is TM so difficult to control? Why can’t one just set it for X number of backups and have an easy to access delete button? (grumble, grumble)
I looked at the FAQs, but am still not clear on how to find the “action” button. I am using a laptop with no “right click” feature. The mouse is a one piece model.
My backup drive is directly attached, but, only when I want to backup since I work on a MB pro laptop.
    So please:
    How do I correct this?
Do I need to format the backup drive and partition? I don’t want/need so many backups cluttering my drive. I need space for permanent photo archives which are very large. These are now merely in a separate folder on the backup drive.

  • Time Machine Case Sensitive Restore to Non-Case Sensitive

I have a MacBook 2.4GHz white laptop with OS X 10.5.5. Previously I formatted the drive as Mac OS Extended Journaled Case Sensitive. I have determined that I cannot install Photoshop CS3 onto this drive without doing some fairly tricky work-arounds.
To fix this problem "fast", I used my Time Machine backup to restore my primary drive after I had reformatted it as Mac OS Extended Journaled. However, as part of the restoration process, time machine formatted the drive again (as case sensitive) and copied the software. This puts me back where I started.
Is there a way to alter the settings of time machine such that it does not format the drive or does not format the drive as case sensitive?
Is the only way for me to do this to reinstall OS X 10.5 on the formatted drive (not case sensitive) and copy the files over from time machine? Is is possible to copy (not restore) files from the time machine drive?
I would appreciate any help. Thanks for your time.

Unfortunately, an Erase and Install is probably the only way you are going to fix this. As you have discovered, it appears that "Restore System From Backup..." reformats the destination drive to match the state in which the backups took place.
The TM backup may not have the ability to rename dupes that might occur if some files have identical names save their case.
Even a reformat and reinstall may not work unless any pseudo-identical files are first renamed.

  • Restore iTunes backup from Time Machine?

It all began when I noticed the YouTube app was missing on my 1st gen iPad (iOS 5.1.1). Couldn't figure out how to reload just the app, so I decided to restore the iPad. I did this last week, when I had the iPad replaced at the AppleStore, and had no problems restoring from backup.
This time, however, when the restore operation finished, only a handful of the several dozen apps had been restored (and YouTube was still missing). Now I'm thinking that the backup didn't properly complete before the restore operation was started, and this incomplete backup is now the default.
Is it possible to retrieve an older backup (yesterday) from Time Machine. Is that possible? Hate to think I've permanently lost all my data in all those apps.

  • How can I restore an old iPhone backup from Time Machine?

    Hi there,
I lost my iPhone 4S but have a extra iPhone 4 (used for travel) that I would like to restore the 4S backup to.
The problem is that the backup of my 4S has somehow disappeared from itunes and the only one that shows up is the iPhone 4 backup even though they are set up as different devices with different names. I know that the backup for my 4S is included with my Time Machine backups (on external harddrive) but I can't find the files. Also very strange is that I don't have the folder "MobileSync" in /Library/Application Support/MobileSync on my computer. I can't find that folder anywhere.
My computer is less that 6 months old and I know that I have not deleted that folder or any other that are preinstalled.
I'm using OS X 10.9.4 and I don't want to restore my hole computer from Time Machine, just the files that hold my 4S backup.
Also note that I have not backed up everything from my 4S phone to iClould so that's not an option.
    I've tried everything including:
    - Restoring the settings on the iPhone 4 to factory settings and then connecting to itunes.
    - Deleting itunes and restoring it from Time Machine at a date that i knew had the original iphone backup.
Who ever can solve this for me deserves a gold medal. I'm truly desperate. I've searched all forums and haven't found a solution for this.
    Thanks.

    Correct.
You need to go to ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/.
The ~ indicates your User folder not the top level /Library/ folder.
Click on the desktop, then hold Option and go to Finder menu Go and Library will be there (only when holding Option as it is hidden).

  • How can I restore an old backup from Time Machine to my iPhone 5?

I have the iPhone 5 that I had previously transferred my apps and other data to from my iPhone 4. Due to poor battery life, I had to restore the iPhone 5 as a new phone. This helped battery life but now I habve lost my text messages, App data and photos. I use Time Machine on my Mac so whayt do I need to do to get the data back on my phone. I'd like to do this without restoring the phone but rather syncing it with data recovered from Time Machine. I don't want to screw up the battery life again.

    Hi ...
I've found a solution to my problem.
Time Machine locates extenal HDD backups differently depending if they were done via a network or via a USB/FireWire/Thunderbolt connection.
My initial backup was done via a direct Thunderbolt connection. I ran into the above issue b/c the second time when I tried looking for the backup file the HDD was conencted to my iMac and I was accessing it via a network conenction.
I simply connected the drive directly to my MacBook pro and ... voila. I was able to see the backup, select the iPhoto library and begin the restore.
    Hope this helps.
BTW - I found this out by reading the 'blue box' selection on this page: http://pondini.org/TM/E2.html
    (Thanks goes to Pondini!)
