Problems searching descriptions - spotlight

Ive recently been adding descriptions to my photos with the intention of being able to easily search through my photo library.
The only problem is, spotlight does not seem like its picking up ALL the relevant pictures Basically, I am only seeing a small subset of the pictures being returned in a spotlight search (eg 10 pictures with Trevi Fountain within description, spotlight search only returns 3)
Has anyone seen this problem or know of a way around it? Is this a defect?

I'm searching through the actual spotlight interface. Through iPhoto the search works but through spotlight the search does not
I did the following so far:
1. Changed the title of the pictures from within iPhoto (not the filename)
2. Moved the Pictures folder to private and then ~30Min later, deleted the folder from the settings to re-index
I still get incomplete results and have confirmed that the spelling is the same on all of the pictures that I'm searching.

  • Has anyone had a problem with the spotlight search not working sometimes?

Has anyone had a problem with their "spotlight search" not working? If I restart the phone it will work for a few days then not work again.

It's more likely the OP's router.  I have a wifi only iPad 2, yet location services work just fine on my iPad.  If I open maps, my location is found quite nicely.  I have seen that some routers do not provide location services and I suspect the OP has such a router.

  • Apple Mail Search and Spotlight do not work for locating email messages after upgrading to Lion 10.8.3.

Apple Mail Search and Spotlight do not work for locating email messages after upgrading to Lion 10.8.3 on my 27" iMac.
When searching in Apple Mail, sometimes a get a few results (with many missing), and sometimes no results at all.
I had absolutely no problems before with Snow Loepard.
I have reindexed mail and my startup drive. I have followed discussions regarding this matter and tried everything - a waste of time.
This is VERY serious for me - I have many thousands of messages that I archive and need to reference for work and clients, and now I cannot find them.

I found out that I needed a $100 mini displayport to dual-link dvi adapter to make my $30" cinema display work with my macbook pro
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB571Z/A/mini-displayport-to-dual-link-dvi-ada pter?fnode=51
When I found out that solved the problem, I took it back because that was too expensive for a stupid adapter, and it still didn't work perfectly.

  • Mouse stops responding and instead brings up a box with options like Search in Spotlight, etc..  What's happening?

Sometimes when I'm typing and click on wireless mouse to correct a misspelling or the like, the mouse stops responding--freezes--and instead brings up a box with one set of options or another.  One box includes  Search in Spotlight, Search in Google, Look in Dictionary, etc..  The other box includes Help, Cut, Copy, Paste, Font, etc.
On some days, like yesterday, this happens every few minutes.  Today, however, it hasn't happened yet--oops, spoke too soon...it just happened again!
I've checked mouse preferences and tried different options there to no avail.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks...

Soundl like you are activating the mouse "right click" by mistake and and getting contextual menus instead of the standard left click. I suggest that you turn off the right click option for a while in pref's and use the combination of;  "control + mouse click" to access these menus when you actually want them. This will ensure that a miss click is not the problem.
If the problem is fixed, then turn the right click option back on so you can adjust your usage of the mouse with care to click on the right or left side of the mouse for standard or right clicks. this way you know that the problem is you and not the mouse.

  • Yosemite: Saved search from Spotlight does not work the same

    Hi,
I have various Logic Pro folders throughout my computer and want to create a Saved Search that brings all and only the Logic project files together into one place.
There's a couple of catches: the Logic file extension has changed over the years with the various application updates.
It would be nice to create a Smart Folder/Saved Search with something like File Extension:logic OR File Extension:logicx OR File Extension:lso
However if you just add these search criteria as separate lines, it appears they are "AND" filters so nothing shows up at all.
I seem to remember older versions of Smart Folders allowing you to have much more control over boolean search parameters.
After a bit of online investigation I discovered that you can do some more complex searches using Spotlight and then save it as a Smart Folder or Saved Search.
    In Spotlight I used:
Kind:Logic -.0 -(crashed) -.cst -.pst -.prf -.patch -.logikcs
This cleaned out all the extra unneeded files and backups that are associated with Logic and just displayed only my desired .logic, logicx and .lso files.
Awesome! Then I saved it as a Saved Search in the sidebar.
Which doesn't work. Or at least the extra flags don't work. All I am seeing is the Kind:Logic again.
This is how the Spotlight search translates across into the Saved Search window (I can scroll across to see the extra flags). Any good ideas or workable solutions? Thx!

    >
fromObject in the code above is a key (String) that I retrieve from the OrderedHashtable and clone it using the code above.No. How could that code possibly clone a String? Where are you telling it what the new String's contents should be?
    (HINT: Nowhere.)
I guess there is a work around where I can check if the cloneClass is an Instance of String and just do fromObject.toString(), but I was curious to know if there was a change in the way class.newInstance() works in Java 1.5No, it has not changed.

  • Why is the iphone search function spotlight limited in time?

why is the iphone search function spotlight limited in time? I can only find entries that are less than a year old,but I would like to search older entries in my calender, which goes back to 2002. Anyone has a solution for this?

Are you sure that your calendar still contains entries from that long ago? Generally when you sync the iPhone through iTunes, it will only sync entries from a specific time frame. It may be there older entries have been archived and do not exist on the iPhone anymore. Other than that, I don't see any setting that allows modification to the time frame for Spotlight search.

  • Question re iMac Search function Spotlight

Hello.  When I type a query into the iMac search function, Spotlight,  top right hand corner of the screen, magnifier icon, it brings up
all the possibles available.  I can click on the one I want and it will open up, however prior to Lion I used to be able to hover
over any one and it would show where it was located in the iMac.  This doesnt seem to work in Lion.  Any suggestions
    would be appreciated.  Thanks.

    I found this in Gilsmethod.com quote :
When the preview appears, press the Command key on your keyboard and while holding down Command press the Option key.
You will notice that the lower border of the preview will expand providingyou with the location of the item you are looking for.
If you click on the file from the list while doing this, the location where the file is located will be open and not the file. unquote
Works good but a little cumbersome and not as good as in Snow Leopard where the path automatically appeared  Cheers.

  • TS1389 When I go to play a movie, I get prompted that the original file cannot be found.  When I do a search on spotlight it cannot be found, but it does appear in my purchases.  How do I re-download when it does not appear that it is allowed?

When I go to play a movie, I get prompted that the original file cannot be found.  When I do a search on spotlight it cannot be found, but it does appear in my purchases.  How do I re-download when it does not appear that it is allowed?

    Hello paddyrb154,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with your purchased movie in iTunes on your iMac.  It sounds like iTunes thinks the movie is on your computer, but it is not located in the iTunes Media folder.
For an issue like this, I recommend deleting the movie from iTunes and downloading it from the iTunes Store again.  Use these steps to delete the movie:
    Mac or PC
    Launch iTunes.
From the Library pop-up menu, choose Movies.
Click Movies in the navigation bar.
Click the movie you want to delete.
Press the Delete key on your keyboard.
In iTunes 11, the movie cover art will remain visible, but a cloud icon will appear on it to allow you to download the item again (in countries that support this).
How to delete content you've downloaded from the iTunes Store, App Store, iBooks Store, or Mac App Store
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5772
Once you have deleted the movie, you can click on the cloud icon to download the movie again.  If you do not see the cloud icon, use the steps in the section titled “Download previous purchases on Mac or PC ” in the following article to download the movie from your list of past purchases in the iTunes Store:

  • Search/Smart/Spotlight Mailboxes Won't Find URLs in HTML?!

For example, I want to find all the emails in a very large mailbox +(or all of them)+ containing a certain URL somewhere within them.
Dozens of emails contain links with the URL of interest, but when I search for something like:
    http://www.domain.com or even www.domain.com
I get zero results even though I search in *Entire Message*. If I leave off the 'www.' and '.com' the search is not specific enough.
If I create a "Smart Mailbox" it likewise comes up empty, though I set it to *Contains Messages that match Any of the following conditions:* and the condition to *_Entire Message_  Contains* *{URL I want}*.
Searching with Spotlight doesn't find emails containing URLs either.
    Am I overlooking something?

  • Trash Email and Search and Spotlight?!

    Hi and tnxs for reading.
I noticed that with both email search and spotlight search, no mail are searched in trash folder.
Is there any chance to include it in general search aswell instead of having to open that folder and search manually in it?
    Many tnxs.

    Howdy Jet787,
You can enable the searching of the Trash when you do a spotlight search in Mail, by configuring the preferences for the application.
To include the Trash and Junk mailboxes, and encrypted messages, when you search all mailboxes, choose Mail > Preferences, and then click General.

  • I moved several folders from my Mac to iCloud and I cannot easily find them.  Is there an easier way to find them instead of searching in Spotlight?

I moved several folders from my Mac to iCloud and I cannot easily find them.  Is there an easier way to find them instead of searching in Spotlight?

If you have facing pages, you have to set up the document with facing pages that is what is it for. If you have a spreadwide design as above, keep the spreads together. There is not even one reason not to do so.
Only for wire-O-bindings might a different workflow useful, but also with facing pages documents and only when the left page and the right page have not a spread wide design:
//// I did one mistake, I created a doument with a right binding, but it would work the same way with left binding.)
    1. Create a document with Facing Pages.
    2. Select the Spread in the Page Panel (Window > Page Panel) and in the panel’s flyout menu deselect "Allow Selected Spread to Shuffle". The spread’s page number will appear in brackets.
    3. Select a single page of the spread and drag it to the side until a vertical bar appears.
    4. Now you have the result.
Left and right pages have their own spread and will have a bleed around each page without taking information from the other page.

  • Having problems searching for music

I just recently encountered a problem searching for music on the Itunes store. I searched under song title, and it didn't bring up any results. Then I searched for the same music under artist, and the music came up. What's weird here is that the music was always there, but it's not showing up when I try to search under song title. Can someone tell me what's going on here?

If the song is a part of "Compilation", you cannot find it using Artist or Genres. But you can find it searching through Albums or Compilations. Try that, maybe that's you problem.

  • Website searches in Spotlight

    Hello,
I found out that I see websites I visited when I search things in Finder...
I wondered if they occupy space on my Memory and if I can turn that off. Not only that they become invisible but that they cant be find local on my computer
    thanks
    thomas

    Ryan,
The biggest "problem" is that nobody except Apple is sure that this is supposed to work. By your description of what you have discovered and what you have tried, I see that we have been down the same path. Everything seems to indicate that it should be possible to query in Spotlight for terms that occur in the comments that you assign to photos in iPhoto. Like you, I recall that it did indeed work ... with iPhoto 08 and with Leopard. Bruce Webster, the developer of iPhoto Library Manager, once told me that the feature is "flaky," and that he has never figured out what breaks it. I have reported the problem as a bug to Apple but have received not reply. I had hoped that iPhoto 09 would fix the problem, but, as we have both discovered, it does not.
It sure would be nice if Apple either confirmed that they know about this problem or stated that Spotlight isn't supposed to index iPhoto photos.
