Problems setting scratch disks

Everytime I open finalcut and try to reset my scratch disks the screen goes black, when I click away from the final cut window everything comes back.
Any clue as to what is going on? no one else in the office has ever had this problem.
oh i am running 5.1.2
thanks

Very odd.
Have you tried trashing your FCP preferences? FCP Attic is a great little app for this purpose.
Once the preferences are gone, you should be able to reset scratch drives with no problem.

  • Unable to set scratch disk

I have just upgraded to Lion and have tried to use FCE for the first time with it.
I got an error message upon starting it
"Unable to set scratch disk. The selected directory is on write protected or non writeable media"
    Any ideas?
Also and I dont know if it is related, when I try to export to quicktime, there is no video in the exported quicktime file only video. There is video however when I tick make self contained movie.
It is a new problem and hasn't happened before going to Lion.

Most users using Lion have trouble of one kind or another.
Short answer is Lion is not suppoorted for FCE use.
Moving to FCP X is the only supported option at this time or roll back to Snow Leopard.

By internal, I assume you're referring to your systems (boot) drive. Is it, by chance, a partitioned dive?
Also…although many people successfully use their systems drives as scratch disks, over time you'll have better results using a dedicated drive for your media.
    Good luck.

  • Unable to set scratch disk error

I know this has probably come up before but I can't find the topic when I search. The error message says this...."Unable to set scratch disk. The selected directory is on write-protected or non-writable media."
In addition to that, whenever I try to render by pressing either option+r or apple+r I get an error message saying...."File Error: Access Denied."
    Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

    Have you tried...
    Trashing preferences?
    Run Disk Utility?
Instead of control-clicking on the drive, try control-clicking on the Capture Scratch folder and the project Subfolder and changing permissions.

  • The problem with scratch disk space.

I have been using Priemere products for over ten years now and have run into a problem recently using Premiere Pro that surprised me.  I was editting a project last week that required me to reuse a lengthy clip several times.  I would set a different in/out point with each use because the clip was not broken up into separate pieces when it was captured.  This is the first time that I have had to do this with such a long clip so I never encountered this problem before.  After saving a considerable amount of different versions of the same clip, I received a notice that the hard drive that I was saving the project in was full.
When I checked the project file I found that with each use of the long clip, Premiere would save the entire clip under the preview files sub-folder.  This meant that in no time at all I had compiled a total of 35 gig of video files from a single 1.2 gig original.  I determined after the fact that I could have redefined a different in/out point on the same original clip without having to reinsert it each time.  This would have resulted in a much smaller preview file size.
I have two questions.  First, is there some way for me to easily back out all of the duplicate clips from the project window of Premiere so that the preview sub-folder size decreases?  Second, will Premiere always duplicate every clip that I select for the timeline in the scratch disk file?  This seems like a tremendous waste of space even though it is suppose to improve realtime preview.  I always thought that the project file just recorded the locations of the clips and when and where to use them.  Maybe I have been wrong all of these years or maybe Adobe Premiere has become more demanding over the years.  Either way, some clarification on these points would be greatly appreciated.

Consider a single clip that may contain 45 minutes of video.  I wanted to use numerous segments from within that large clip in my video.  So, I imported the same clip into the project window of Premiere for each segment that I wan't to use.  Each time I imported the file I would set a different in/out point on it and drag that to my Timeline.  After about the 10th import, Windows informed me that I had exceeded the storage capacity of the hard drive that my scratch disk was on.  I have done numerous videos with both static and video images in the past and have never run into this problem.  That was the nature of my inquiry.

  • Problem with scratch disk in CS4

    Hi
I used Premiere Pro CS4 on my MacBook to import from my Panasonic DC-TM700 HD camera and set the scratch disks to an external disk.
But now there´s nothing on the external disk, and I got 8GB less space on my internal hard drive.
So it seems like all my footage was imported to the internal hard drive, but the promblem is: I can´t find it!
I´ve searched my mac for capture, scratch, log and premiere, but I still can´t find the folder. It´s not in the Premiere-folder in documents eather.
    Where can this folder be?
    Thanks
    Lise

sounds like you imported from your panasonic camera. Also sounds like you have no clue where they were being imported TO. There is one clue....which is having less space on your internal hard drive now ( 8gb). Leads us to believe that maybe you imported the video to your internal HD.
If you have any idea at all what sort of file extension your imported video would have (   eg.  AVI, MOV, MPEG, etc ) you could do a "search" on that hard drive for any files that have the extension you saved the video as.
Once you find them on your hard drive you can do what you want with them.

  • Problem with Scratch Disk - CS4 - Mac

Under project settings, scratch disks, I have set everything to a folder on my external drive, and it shows me for each item that there is 1TB of space available.  I am attempting to capture from my Panasonic camera.   As soon as I start capturing, it shows me I only have 27.2MB of space available!  This doesn't make any sense at all, and is not even enough space to capture this half-hour of footage; the capture keeps dropping frames and will only capture about 10 min of film.
I don't understand this program.  Every time I capture video it seems to take up an unbelievably HUGE amount of space on my internal hard-drive.  I have deleted everything I can find to delete on my internal drive, and deleted the trash as well, and it does show that I have 15 gigs available internally, but Premiere just can't seem to find enough space.
WHY, when I'm giving it 1 terabyte of space to use, does it tell me I only have 27MB of space available??  This should have taken me only half an hour to capture (I did one earlier that was just fine, but that seems to have taken the last bit of space available) and instead I have wasted the past 4 hours trying to figure this out.
    Please help!!!

OMG - even tried rebooting my computer to clear RAM etc... and STILL it is showing me "Remaining disk space: 27.22 MB."  I just cannot figure this out!  And why did it capture just fine prior to trying this one (can't remember how much disk space it was showing me then, but I recall it was a lot more than 2 megabytes)?  I didn't change any settings...
The program will only capture 9min ~25sec, then it says something like "unexpected recorder error" and stops the capture.
I really need to be able to capture this stuff - HELP, please???!!!

  • More than 1 set of scratch disks ?

i want to have more than 1 set of scratch disks in FCP.
    is this possible ?
i want to have one project on one and then one on another,if so how would i save to each one ?
    thanks
    adam

I do this regularly as I have 2 additional hard drives in my machine. I set scratch disks on each one (for example name FCP doc on HD-1, FCP doc on HD-2). I have the corresponding FCP project on each HD. When they are long weddings, that helps me keep everything organized.
The downside is when you start up each project you have to go into FCP System Settings EACH time to make sure the scratch disks are set to the HD you want. A pain if you are switching back and forth between projects quite a bit.
Actually, each project saves in the scratch disks under its own name, so it is kind of 'what's the point' of putting on different scratch disks? I say that, then I do it Old habits die hard.

  • Scratch disk problem. Please help!

When working with multiple external harddrives it is often a mess when I forget to set scratchdisk (for rendering) to the same hd as the project.
Is it possible to be asked where to store renderfiles when opening a new project?

What is really the issue here is developing proper operational habits. I work in a mult-seat editing facility where projects are stored on an XSAN. We've had to establish a discipline with our editors that has created a habit of setting scratch disks every time a project is opened. A simple solution would be posting a note on your monitor that reads something simple like "set scratch disks?", or "have you checked your scratch disks?".

  • FCP scratch disk help

Hi, I'm new to mac and fcp... it's a bit too much new stuff to grasp.. but I'm trying. could someone tell me why do I need to set scratch disk for? Also what other crucial things, if any, should I be looking at before I can start editing?

    >Also what other crucial things, if any, should I be looking at
    before I can start editing?
There are far too many to list here - but you should make sure your Scratch Disk is NOT your System Disk - otherwise your system will slow down (and you need everything to run efficiently for video editing as it eats power, memory and drive space)
As Shane said, do the tutorials and read as much as you can.
If you have a problem, search this Discussion Group before you post something elementary.
    Good luck

  • Scratch Disk & Windows 7 Default User

    Hello,
I've been trying to set scratch disks for quite a few computers from the admin account to the secondary 1TB disk, for the admin acc this works perfectly fine. However, as soon as a new domain user logs in his / her scratch disk settings are back to default.
I'm quite lost right now where to start looking when it comes to settings, on all machines where this has been configured it's all been done before they entered the domain.
Is there any premiere setting/config file that hides itself somewhere within the C:\Users\Default of windows 7 or is there any other way to make the settings persist to every other account?

  • Can you save system settings scratch disks locations for each project?

When you begin a new project in FCE you need to set the System Settings Scratch Disks. Typically you would set a new folder for each project to keep all of your files for each project in one location for that project.
I have a couple of FCE projects going at the same time. I've set each project with a different system setting scratch disk location. But if I open a project which should have a unique scratch disk location folder that I've already set before for that project, it ignores the setting I set for that project and just shows the scratch disk setting for the last project opened instead. It does not appear to save or remember the unique setting for that project.
If you have multiple projects going at the same time, is there a way to save the systems settings scratch disk location for each project and have FCE remember that location for each project?

I turned off the Open Last Project on Application Launch in the User Preferences and it still does not remember the unique scratch disk settings for each project.
Since it is quite common to be working on multiple projects simultaneously, you would think that there would be a way in which to save the settings for each project to help keep all related files better organized.
    Any other suggestions?

  • Photoshop not using scratch disk for PDF generation

Using Adobe Photoshop CC latest release - Set Scratch disk to S: drive.  Photoshop consumes all of my c: drive using  C:\users\<username>\AppData\Local\Temp for the temporary folder when generating a PDF.
How do I make Photoshop CC point to the S: drive for temp

I created a Junction with MKLINK from C:\users\<username>\AppData\Local\Temp to my solid state drive S:\MKLINK_TEMP  so I was able to work around this.
It is taking over 30 minutes to generate a PDF from Photoshop
I upgraded to CC 2014 versions on all my applications yesterday as well.

  • Scratch Disk Problem

I am running Audition 2 and cannot get preferences to recognize the second internal drive (D:) for use as a scratch disk.
Only the C: drive and the external F: drive come up.
This is a recent problem. There is nothing wrong with the D: drive: it has 150 GB free.
Oddly, this problem also affects Soundbooth CS4, but none of the other CS3 or CS4 apps (Photoshop, Premiere, Illustrator...)
I've tried restarting. Is there any way to throw away the preferences files for both Audition 2 & Soundbooth? Do I need to reinstall?
System: Windows XP Pro SP3 3 GB RAM
Drives: C:150 GB (internal) D: 250 GB (internal) F:1 TB (external)
    Thanks,
    Felicia Lovelett

Hmm.... the available drive preferences aren't stored by Audition, but are gathered on the spot from the OS when the function is called. So when you select the three dots to set the temp folders, you aren't looking at Audition at all, but the OS. On the face of it, this isn't an Audition problem at all, especially if other apps aren't finding it either.
There are several possibilities, but without looking at your system I don't think that any of us would actually be able to say definitively what's causing this. Quite often D drives are non-writable - because they are generally CD or DVD drives. But that shouldn't affect what Audition sees, or is reported by the OS at all - it should only list writable drives, but it should certainly list all of them! The only thing that I can think of that you could try easily is to change the drive letter for your second drive to something completely different (try Q), and see if Audition/SB see it then. Look at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307844 for more information about this.

  • Any advice for teacher struggling with scratch disk problems?

    Hi,
Just wondering if anyone out there has advice for me. I am a Media Teacher with very little technical expertise. We use Premiere Elements 4.0 in my school. This is accessible to students on the school network but is located on a separate drive. I am experienceing a lot of problems at the moment which I suspect may be to do with having multiple users. The students work in groups. Some of them do not seem to be able to access their current coursework - a scratch disk error message comes up and they are asked if they want to locate the scratch disks into their own area of the school network. As personal space is very limited, they always say no, and then cannot access the projects. Other students do not have this problem. The scratch disks are located by default to the same drive as the main work.
A further problem is that in one project, the clips in the second half of the project seem to be 'offline'. I have seen this before and have been able to fix it by locating the clip in the project menu and using 'locate media' to reconnect it. However, this time round, the clip can be seen and runs perfectly in the project menu. It also looks as normal on the timeline. It is only in the viewing window that it comes up as offline. The locate media option isn't available. If I save as an avi, the offline message appears, so the project burns as it appears in the viewing window. If I drag the clips down from the project area and reconstruct, everything plays normally until I close the project down and open it again, when the clips are back offline. I can tell something strange is going on because the project is loading very quickly - it was taking a couple of minutes previously.
Any advice at all would be welcome, as we are near the end of the coursework and the projects we can't access represent a term's work for the students!

You may need to contact Adobe Tech Support for your specific needs.
Is Premiere Elements installed on your network or on the C drives of each computer? The program must be installed on the C drive in order to work properly. You can't run the program from a network installation, and that could explain why you're having the problems you're having.
If you've got Premiere Elements installed on your C drive, you should be able to access your video files if they're stored on the network. But this depends on how your network is set up. It may not be possible for all of your students to access material out on your network drive and remain connected to it the same way every time you open your project.
In other words, you're using the program in ways it's not designed to be used. This is why you may need to contact Tech Suport and see if they can recommend a solution, short of each student having their own complete installation on each computer.
