Problems setting still photo duration??

How do you REALLY change and fit the transition and clip duration to what you want it to be? I have tried everything and researched it long enough.This has been a long-time problem with a lot of users - I'm surprised and disappointed Apple hasn't helped anyone through this by giving a solution THAT WORKS.
The last thing I tried was...
delete all transitions
set the still photo duration to what I want it to be (3.0sec)
add transitions back
But when I add them the still photo duration jumps to 4.0sec?? When I then go back and click on the photo to change duration for all photos, the time increases by 1.0 sec every time I adjust it back to my original 3.0 input. Right now it is at 8.0 sec???!!
Can someone help me with the steps to do this? I really don't want to start all over, I'd rather input photo settings for each picture then find the pictures again to add to my project.
*Yes I realize that the project settings (command+J) probably need to correspond - that is what makes sense to me, at least *

Wait!
I think I figured it out - If anyone has this problem, go to preferences and "unclick" - ADD AUTOMATIC TRANSITION DURATION in Browser catagory at the bottom. Then hit command+J to go to project properties and know that PHOTO DURATION + TRANSITION DURATION = the number of seconds you see when you click on your still photo.
Hopefully that helps someone out there.

  • Problem With Still Photos in iMovie 06

    I am creating a movie that includes still photos. The stills are all imported from iPhoto. The problem is, when i import some of them, the little red bar runs across the bottom of the photo and then it goes black. Photo appears to be gone, just a black frame left. It doesn't happen to all of them, just some. All are jpegs. Any ideas what the problem is?
    Thank you for your time.

    Hi
    And this 100Gb is on Your internal (start-up) drive ? Others don't count.
    *Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows:*
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Delete iMovie pref file - or rather start a new user/account - log into this and re-try
    • Third party plug-ins that doesn't work OK (not relevant for iMovie’08)
    • Program miss-match: iMovie 5.0.2, up to Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK
    • Program miss-match: iMovie 6.0.3 or 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match: iMovie’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Screen must be set to Million-colors
    iMovie pref file resides:
    Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences and is named: com.apple.iMovie.plist
    While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iMovie.
    From LKN 1935: (in this case = iMovie HD (5), I tried it all, but nothing worked.
    Your answer (above) has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that
    there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled
    iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos)
    to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before.

  • How to set still photo display length

    How can I change the length that a still photos is displayed so I don't have to manually do this for each photo?
    Thanks
    Nik

    Nik,
    This is done in Edit>Preferences>General. IIRC, the still Duration is in Frames, not seconds, so take note of that. Do this, prior to Import. It will also set the Duration for Titles, but they are easy to adjust for Duration.
    Good luck,

  • Setting Still Image Durations in Premiere Elements 8

    I've been using Premiere Elements 4 for awhile and never did find a solution to a simple problem.   Now I can't see any improvements worth anything in version 8 either.
    I have, say, 100 jpgs.  I want to create a slide show with, to start with, a constant duration of 10 seconds each.
    If I just add them all I get a duration of 5 seconds each.  There then seems to be no way to pick them in groups and change them to any other duration (a feature of a number of other DVD making programs).
    I deleted all the jpgs from the sceneline.  In preferences I set the duration to 350 frames (should be just over 11 seconds  -- but way not allow me to pick seconds - which is after all the result I want).  I readded all the jpgs from the project list and they didn't have 11 seconds duration (still 5).  Do I have to wipe the whole project.   Set the duration and reget all the media?
    I've googled away for awhile but am too dumb to find an answer to what should be a very simple question.
    I'm not clear I'm asking in the right place but I'm trying anyway.
    Thanks for any help that anyone can be.
    Paul

    Paul,
    The stills Duration setting has been Feature Request for some many versions now, and, as mentioned, just made it into PrPro with CS5. I would suggest filing that Feature Request for PrE, so that maybe it will be incorporated into PrE 9, due out in several months, if the normal life-cycle holds true.
    I am with you on seeing little, to no need to upgrade from PrE 4 to PrE 8, but have to admit that I felt the same way about PrPro, which I use much more often. However, the changes in the CS5 suite (especially PrPro and AE), has me working to get a new workstation and then the full upgrade. There are enough enhancements to sway me completely, even at the expense of new hardware.
    I do recommend Steve's articles on authoring in PrE, especially regarding the Menus. I've done a couple of articles in Tips & Tricks on modifying the Menu Sets, but Steve covers ALL topics, related to authoring. As I seldom do authoring in PrE, I have to go to his articles to "brush up," so I appreciate them greatly.
    Good luck,

  • Problem importing still photos from digital camera.  Any help please?

    I wanted to put together a little Premier Pro CS5 project using 20 stills from my Sony digital camera.  When I go through the various options to import them
    into my project (Import, Import through Bridge, etc) I get 20 different file names in the Project panel but instead of 20 different photos (as expected) I have 20 copies of the same photograph.
    Wow, that is frustrating.  The closest item in the support logs I could find was this one (see below), but that work around is both over my head and very time consuming.
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/730233
    I found another discussion along these same lines and it appears that no solution has been found.
    I hope I am not asking too much of my $1,000 software program to say, "Please pull in these 20 pics so I can work with them in the timeline."  I just want to hit import and go.
    I am using a Win7 computer with a Sony camera taking 3 mega-pixel shots.  Again, all looks to be going well (all 20 filenames in project panel are different) but when those files are opened they are all the same picture.
    I've rebooted, opened and close PrPro, tried renaming the pics from the standard dsc123.jpg convention to something else - all to no avail.  I would find it hard to believe that a program this powerful could struggle with such a simple chore - am I doing something incorrect?
    Thank you for any help!
    Stuart

    More info about the issue.  This is also a hit-and-miss error, as once you find a way that will appear to work and you say to yourself, "Finally!  I figured it out!"
    But once you go to the next photo to pull it in and get on with your project you find that you are pulling in multiple copies of the same picture as the one
    you just pulled in.
    This same problem occurs if you attempt to import using the Media Browser, and as an interesting footnote, the Media Browser window has a drop down
    list.  When you click each of your different file names, there it is - the same picture.  I've invested 1.5 hours in attempting to find a work-around by importing, renaming, saving, right-clicking, using context menus - everything my 43 years of computer use can muster - but still no luck.
    The last time that I created a project similar to this (a mix of video and stills) it worked just fine so that is even more of a head-scratcher for me.
    I even went back and re-imported the pics that worked fine into the project that I am struggling with and they came in fine - no duplication.  But vacation pics are the only copies I have and I just need to import these 20 shots and get to work on them.
    I would be willing to let someone get my IP address and connect directly like my IT folks at work do so they could see what is going on with this.
    Thank you again for any assistance!
    Stuart

  • Problem importing still photos taken off Internet

    I want to use a few photos I've found on the Internet with my movie. Trouble is, when I click and drag them into iMovie, more often than not they turn out to be very weak images--all fuzzy and stuff. I checked the dimensions as well as the size, and most of them are quite big. But even the big ones end up being fuzzy and out of focus. Every now and then, though, a photo will be fine. What am I missing here? Thanks.

    Check to make sure that when you download the image from the internet you are downloading the +actual picture file+ and not the thumbnail of the picture that is on the web page.
    Hope this helps.

  • Problems setting duration for still photos and transitions in iMovie '11

    I downloaded iMovie 11 from the Apps Store last night and am trying to make my first movie with it today. I use still photos exclusively.
    For most - but not all - I like 5 seconds for photos and for transitions 2 seconds. I do vary this on occasion and so do not check "for all photos' or "for all transitions".
    I can't get these settings to work with this version of iMovie. For example, I added a photo (5 sec) then a transition (2 sec) which changed the duration time of the photo - as it should. But when I double clicked the photo, to bring up the inspector window to change the duration of the photo, nothing happened. Then I added another photo. The duration of the first photo increased to 7 seconds and nothing I do seemed to change that.
    The time increases seem random: for example, sometimes the time on the still photo increases to 6:29 sec, sometimes to 7 sec.
    The duration for the transitions always remains the same - 2 sec; it's the time for the photos that jumps around. And I haven't been able to find a way to get back to 5 sec.
    Before posting this, I researched and found an number of earlier posts detailing the same issues.
    However, none of these posts had stars to indicate the problem was solved.
    Has anyone found a solution or is this a bug that should be reported to Apple?

    Interesting!!
    I've spent a lot of hours on this too, but I have come up with a different solution perhaps because I like to vary both the image duration and the transition duration in my movies.
    Here's my process:
    -> Knowing that (a) I want most of the photos to be visible for 5 seconds and most transitions for 2 seconds and (b) that a transition takes half from the photo before and half from the photo after, under File>Project Properties>Photo Duration I chose 7 seconds - each photo will 'lose' a total of 2 seconds from the transitions in front and behind. I did not check either "Applies to all transitions." or "Applies to all photos." - See below for why.
    -> I discovered, as you have, that all the photos have to go in before I add any transitions. This was new to me. With all previous versions of iMovie I simply added a photo then a transition then another photo one at a time. I had to fiddle with the timing adjustments, but at least I could fiddle. With this new version of iMovie I can't. Once the transition is in place, I cannot change the duration of the photo.
    -> Sometimes, I want a longer or shorter duration for a photo. For example, on photos to which I apply the Ken Burns effect, I often want the image on the screen for a slightly longer time. In this case, I have to use the inspector to change the duration before I add the transitions. So I might set the time for 8 seconds; when both transitions are added, the time for this photo becomes 6 seconds, which is what I want.
    -> The same applies if I want a transition to be shorter or longer than 2 seconds. If, for example, I want the duration for a transition to be 1 second, then I have to change the duration on the two linked photos to 5 1/2 seconds.
    All of this requires much more prior planning than I am used to with iMovie. Right now, I working with batches of 5 or 6 photos at a time. I don't put a transition on the last photo in the batch until I have added the next group of photos. And things get really tricky if I don't like my original design. If I want to change anything, I have to take out all of the transitions linking the photos I want to work on, do the math, make the changes in the photo durations, then put the transitions back.
    Perhaps I am trying to make iMovie do more than it was intended to do, I don't know. Perhaps this problem stems from the fact that I bought just iMovie 11 from the Mac Apps Store and not the entire iLife 11. Don't know that either. But at least I have found a way to make the movie look the way I want it to look.
    Thanks for sharing your process. I will use it when the circumstances are right.

  • Can't adjust clip duration of still photos in iMovie '11

    Anyone having the same problem? I inserted a still photo in one of my projects in iMovie which has a a clip duration of 5s when added. I clicked the cogwheel icon then chose the inspector to adjust the duration. I've managed to changed it to 3s but after I clicked "Done", the clip duration is still under 5s.
    I didn't encountered this problem before in iMovie '10 and I've searched over at Google and found out that many iMovie '11 users have the same dilemma.
    Any workaround you can suggest? Thanks!

    A number of people have experienced the same problem and written about it on discussions. Lots of difference solutions as well. If you search using the title quoted above, you can read the solution I found. It's more complicated than it should be. I've never had to fiddle as much with duration times for transitions and still photos. Nevertheless, the steps I have described work for me. You will also find the steps another reader offered that may work for you if all of your transitions are set for the same durations and all of the still photos are as well.

  • Preset or change duration of still photos in iMovie project

    Hi,
    I work with iMovie 11 and never had any problem with previous versions.
    Now I'm doing my first project in iM 11 and it just ignores my requests
    When I set the duration in 'Project Properties' 'Apply to all photos' to e.g. 4 sec it will set the duration anything from 5 to 7 sec and no matter how often I change it will not react. If I set it to 3 sec (as an example) it will allow 5 sec. but never what I would like the duration to be.
    This is a really annoying issue, more so when there a lot of still photos in the project.
    Is there any way to rectify this or what else can I do???

  • Problem exporting Premiere Pro CS5.5 projects with still photos and h264 video

    I'm a longtime Final Cut Pro user and evaluating Premiere Pro for my workplace before making the switch. I have been running into several problems when I try to export raw h264 video from a Canon 5D combined with still images on a Macbook Pro. Either I receive an error in Premiere Pro saying, "Error compiling movie. Unknown error." or Adobe Media Encoder appears to continue exporting (the time elapsed bar continues to move) even though the time remaining stays frozen once it hits a photo it doesn't like. It's not always the same photo.
    I've spent several days trying to troubleshoot the issue, including batch resizing all photos to 1920 wide (to match the video settings), and it hasn't work. The sequence is currently set to render in ProRes 422. I've also tried HDV 1080p30 and MPEG-4. I cannot find any consistency with the errors. Occasionally an export will work, but every couple still photos will look like green static. I've also tried batch converting the photos in Photoshop to PNG and GIF without any luck. I'd include my default export settings but I've pretty much tried it all. I'm just trying to figure out what's causing the error since the message is very vague.
    Couple other notes:
    There's plenty hard drive space available for export
    I can export the DSLR video (h264, 1080p30) without still photos no problem
    I can edit the same still photos and video in Final Cut with no problem
    I have the same problem with auto-save on and off
    I tried re-installing production premium, deleting the preference files and cleaning the media cache - no luck. I also tried exporting under a different user account and it wouldn't work.
    This is driving absolutely crazy. I'm affraid to use PP on deadline because I don't see any issues until it's time to export. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Thanks Todd. Your questions were actually very helpful. I'm using a Macbook Pro with an Intel Core i7 processor and NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M graphics card. I'm running OS 10.6.8 and have the latest updates installed.
    When I disabled the GPU acceleration, I was able to render and export without a problem. The problem only occured when using the GPU acceleration and mixing h264 with still photos. It also affected both rendered previews and the final export. I'm assuming its a support issue with the graphics cards, but it would be great if you had any other ideas. I appreciate your help.

    I have used still photos to make a Quick Time movie using FCE.  The DVD made using i-DVD looks somewhat grainy and the motion isn’t smooth when played on my TV.  Other DVD’s I have made play much better and I am wondering if the problem is my Quick Time movie settings.  The Dimensions and size of the problem movie are 1920X1080 and 584 MB respectively, while the movies that play better  have Dimensions of 853X480 and are about 1.3 GB in size.  Is this the source of my problem and how do I change things for the better.

    Are you exporting to QuickTime Movie, or to QuickTime Conversion?   For iDVD, you need to export to QuickTime Movie.   Exporting to QT Conversion will kill the quality if you are moving the video from FCE to iDVD.
    The file size per se makes no difference.
    What size (pixel dimensions) are the photos that you put into your 1920x1080 sequence?  Also, exactly what are the sequence properties ... is it 1920x1080i60 ... or i50?  In North America it should be i60.
    853X480 is an odd frame size.  Where are you seeing this number?  It would appear to be DV-NTSC, which has a frame size of 720x480.  Your 1920x1080 frame size would not be DV-NTSC, it would be Apple Intermediate Codec.   DV and AIC will look different, for sure.
    Also, your quality setting in iDVD can affect the final video.  You may want to check that also (in iDVD Preferences > Projects).  Set it to Professional Quality if at all possible.

  • Problem in setting dynamic expiration duration from Human Task

    Hi,
    I have a BPEL process, in which the Human task expiration has to be set dynamically..
    In the , I have set the expiration duration with this :-
    <copy>
    <from expression="xp20:format-dateTime(xp20:current-dateTime(),'PT1M')"/>
    <to variable="initiateTaskInput" part="payload"
    query="/taskservice:initiateTask/task:task/task:systemAttributes/task:expirationDuration"/>
    </copy>
    Do not get confused with 'PT1M' .. I want the duration to be 1 minute... Had I used 'PT1M' as a String and assign to the expirationDuration var, it would have caused an error... It needs to be fromatted as a Date..That's y i took this approach ... I am sure this is working fine as I have checked the payload of the task..
    It has a proper duration..
    <initiateTaskInput><part xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" name="payload"><initiateTask xmlns="http://xmlns.oracle.com/bpel/workflow/taskService">
    <task xmlns="http://xmlns.oracle.com/bpel/workflow/task">
    <systemAttributes>
    <expirationDuration>PT1M</expirationDuration>
    Now in the Human task definition(.task file), I have set the expiration duration with "By Expression" option in this way..
    <globalConfiguration>
    <owner>oc4jadmin</owner>
    <expirationDuration duration="/task:task/task:systemAttributes/task:expirationDuration"
    type="XPATH"/>
    </globalConfiguration>
    The problem is the task(at runtime) cannot evaluate the expirationDuration from the XPATH..
    I checked with the WF_TASK table in the orabpel schema ...
    When I use a static duration EXPIRATIONDURATION cloumn gets assigned properly (ie PT1M).. But when i take the XPATH approach, it translates to PT0S.
    Can someone look into this please ?
    Struggling with this for quite sometime...
    saptarishi

    If the Human Task shows status complete, then it's possible that there was an error in the output data association in the process. In EM do you see a fault on the output for the Human Task activity, or if PS4FP the process will go to suspended state if the data association fails.

  • SIMPLE QUESTION: DEFAULT SETTING FOR STILL CLIP DURATION

    I want to change it from :10 to :05 for stills that cue up in the Viewer window. The sequence needs to be all :05 cuts and I want to streamline this as much as possible. Many, many stills to throw into this sequence, and all the same length. Just not :10.
    Thanks!

    That setting sets the default duration *at the time images are imported*. It has no effect on images already in the browser.
    One strategy is to delete the images from the browser then reimport the whole lot again.

    What is the Output option that you are selecting for the transfer of the Elements Organizer 12/12.1 slideshow to Premiere Elements 12/12.1 Editor?
    If you are using Edit with Premiere Elements output option, are you using the Premiere Elements command to break apart the Elements Organizer slideshow and then applying rotation to the portrait files? Or, it is this more than just a photo rotation matter?
    More on this in the morning.
    Please review and consider.
