Problems sharing across two computers on home lan

I must be doing something basic wrong. The instructions for sharing a downloaded digital edtion sound very easy in the help manual but following those directions I am not able to share a book across two computers on my home lan.
Both computers have been authorized by my user id. When I open the menu item on Library menu/Authorize computer
I'm told the computer is authorized and my UID is shown. However when I attempt to `add' the book I get a message saying:

> Please contact the site where you obtained the document
> to download another copy.
I just bought the book today not more than 2 hrs ago
The `knowledgbase' help for digital editions is completely useless and returns no hits regardless of what I type in the search field.
What else do I need to do to share a book across two home computers?

You shouldn't need anything else. The common problems (after you have gotten past the authorization) for sharing are:
- You copy over the .etd file instead of the .pdf file.
- You copy over the .pdf file from /Digital Editions/ebx_backup instead of /Digital Editions. (My best guess, given the error message).
- The file was purchased with only rights to view it on a single machine.
The not so common and more worrisome case would be if the License was not being correctly written into the file after you purchase it.
I would suggest that after verifying you are copying the correct file, you should open up a web support case, so that Bentley can track this, and help us gather all the correct information so we can figure out what is going on.

Is it possible to Have a Elements 12 Catalog sync across Two computers over the internet? I have a laptop I use in the Field when I take pictures and a Desktop at my house that I use to Edit the Photos. I would like the Catalog Synced across both computers. IE I download pictures from the Camera onto the laptop and they automatically sync over to the desktop then when I edit the pictures on the Desktop they go back to the laptop.
Is this possible?
What would I need to have it work?

You could put the pictures in the field on your laptop
Send them to Dropbox from your laptop
At home, when you are on the desktop, access the pictures from Dropbox and put them in a folder of choice
Enhance the pictures in PSE, then send them to a destination folder, to preclude overwriting the orginals
Populate the organizer from the destination folder
This requires that you install Dropbox (free, with quite a bit of storage) on both machines. I have the app on my ipad as well, and it synchs perfectly (no catalog, however).
One advantage to this type of work-flow would be that you can get rid of the non-keepers and save the pictures that you fixed at home, prior to any organizer machinations. The old axiom: It's a virtue to be selective.

Here's a little more information on what I am trying to do.
I have a desktop computer with 4tb worth of pictures that has Lightroom and Photoshop on it. I also have a laptop with Photoshop and Lightroom. I would like to be able to edit those same pictures with their current edits that are currently on my desktop on my laptop. If this can be done, I'm sure I need to be on the same wifi network for my laptop to be able to access my desktop's photo library. I am technically savvy enough to map a network drive, but how do I get my two Lightroom catalogs to sync when I make a change on one of my computers? Would i be working only on one catalog? Or two separate catalogs that would need to be manually synced to the other computer? Would it be beneficial to put my lightroom catalog on something like dropbox?
I'd appreciate any information or tutorials if someone knows how to do this.

I do this by having my LR catalog and photos on an external drive that I swap between the two computers. I am on Windows and have the same drive letter assigned to the drive on both computers.
Because the photos are on a portable drive I back up the portable drive to another hard-drive every night or after important work, because portable drives are susceptible to damage or loss.

Synchronize Mail Across Two Computers

Hey everyone!
I have two iMacs running 10.5.7 with Apple Mail set to download email from my own domain with a POP server. I have a gigabytes of locally stored mail that I would like to have synchronized to another, iMac also running 10.5.7. I don't have the option of IMAP, but even if I did, the gigabytes of saved mail would go over my quota.
I tried using Live Mesh, but it does not support files in the /library directories, and MobileMe does not support IMAP/POP accounts.
Any other ideas?

there is no good way to keep POP mail synced across two computers. one time syncing is possible by exporting a mail archive and moving it to another computer but it's not something you want to do on a regular basis. the best i can suggest is to check the option in mail preferences->accounts->advanced to keep messages on the server after retrieval. this way you can download them to both computers.

App duplication in iTunes library shared across two accounts on same iMac

I'm sharing media across two user accounts on a family iMac running Yosemite. The shared content is distributed across folders (Audiobooks, Music, Mobile Applications, etc.) inside Users/Shared/iTunes Music. Both accounts have read and write permissions, and family and home sharing are both turned on and linked to one primary Apple ID. In both accounts iTunes preferences point to the same shared folder. The problem: Updates to mobile applications in one account do not carry over to the other. After updating mobile apps for account A, when I switch to account B, I get the same list of apps awaiting updates. If I update for each account, I find duplicates for each updated app in the shared Mobile Applications folder.
I can avoid the duplication by control-clicking, in the Updates window of iTunes in account B, an app that has already been updated in account A. That will open a dialogue window saying the original file can't be found and asking if I'd like to locate it. When I do, the update disappears from the list in the Updates window. However this is a cumbersome process that I'd think iTunes would perform automatically if it were functioning properly. Has anyone encountered this issue and found a better solution?

For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
What you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc.
Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder
(You can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

File sharing across multiple computers - is there an easier way?

Have a small office that is getting bigger, so we purchased a new 20" iMac. Previously, we had an old iMac G4 and iBook G4. All three computers are part of the same LAN.
In the past, we have shared files across the computers by first mounting a shared computer, then creating an alias to that share and copying the alias to the dock. This allowed us to just click an icon to have access to files on the other computer.
As the office has gotten bigger and we have added a new computer, we need a more reliable solution. We need to be able to access common files (such as word documents and Excel spreadsheets) in a single location. For example, the iMac G4 has document templates that we are constantly changing, but we want to make changes only to a common copy.
Can anyone make some suggestions?

I know you can do this by exporting the common shared directory as an NFS share, and then configuring each client to transparently mount that share at a common point in the filesystem. For example, if you wanted to have a common set of fonts accessible to every client on your network, you could export /Library/Fonts on the server, and have every client mount it at ~/Library/Fonts. Applications running on the client access the fonts on the server, and don't know any differently.
Unfortunately, its not a trivial thing to set up on either the server or the client. I could try to come up with a tutorial, but I haven't had time to get into it myself to really comprehend all of the possibilities with using NFS like that.

Use ipod in two computers, at home and office?

You should format your ipod for your home computer, or whichever machine you're going to want to dump your music onto when you want a cange of pace. You can set your ipod to manual as described above, and that way you will still be able to get files off your computer at work (mac) but will not be able to update ipod software, or take files off the ipod and put them onto the mac. ipod will not "reject" being plugged into a mac once it's been formatted for windows, it just wont be compatible for updates, and if it's configured from the home computer to recieve ANY automatic updates, you may experience problems. There are a couple good third party programs out there, built mainly for recovering itunes library from ipods when a user changes computers, but I wouldnt reccomend using them to maintain identical itunes libraries at home and at the office. You can find what you are looking for by just searching for the action you want the program to perform.

Synchronize iTunes Library Across Two Computers

I have separate iTunes music libraries on my work and home computers. I would like to keep them synchronized, such that if I add a song, or change the rating/playcount/etc on one computer it is reflected on the other.
I currently use an external HD and a 3rd party sync program (Synchronize X Pro) to keep my work files synchronized between the two computers. I'm wondering if I just include the music folder in the synchronization if that will work.

I have been synchronizing iTunes between two computers by duplicating the following three files/folders from the "source" computer over to the "target" computer:
iTunes Library (file)
iTunes Music Library.xml (file)
iTunes Music (folder)
However, you lastly need to check (with a text editor) the
iTunes Music Library.xml
file because about 5 or 10 lines into it, it has the following line (it's all on one line):
<key>Music Folder</key><string>file://localhost/Users/Username/Music/iTunes/iTunes%20Music/</string>
If this string does not properly describe the location of the iTunes Music folder (the folder that holds all the music files), you must edit it so that it does. (If both computers store the iTunes stuff in the Apple default location, no changes will be needed.)
With this exception, my manual "synchronization" has worked well and all tags, ratings, playlists, counts etc. have been preserved.

Home sharing across two wifi networks?

I have two wifi networks in my home and each is attached to its own cable modem. Can home sharing be used across both networks so I can see my Apple TV and my iTunes library at the same time in the remote app? Thus far, I have only been able to access them separately by switching wifi networks on my iPhone. All my devices are set up with the same Apple ID. My main computer is running Windows 7 and it is connected to network #1 via LAN and network #2 via wireless. All my speakers including Apple TV show up in the Airplay menu of iTunes. Apple TV is connected to network #2 solely for the reason that the signal is stronger.
Any ideas out there? This has been frustrating the heck out of me. Thanks in advance!

I think I have the same question, but when you say home saring are you talking about on an Apple TV? My wife and I have an imac with seperate profiles, each profile has an itunes account, and we want to be able to both be able to access our itunes from the apple tv. We went under itunes and > advanced > and clicked on turn on home sharing for both accounts, we see each others libraby when logged onto other profile, but can't get the option on the Apple TV. We also went into I-tunes preferences and turned on sharing. I also beleive under the advanced option menu there is a place to share photos, (from i-photo). Hope this helps.

Sharing libraries: two computers: wireless setting

I'm having trouble sharing music between the libraries on my Mini and laptop. I am connected to the interest via a router, then both machines are connected wirelessly to the router. I can see and play the music on the laptop from the mini, but when I try to access the library on the mini from the laptop I get the message 'The shared music library "Mary's music" is not accessible for an unknown reason. (-3259)' It then goes on to suggest checking firewalls and port 42152.
Both libraries have sharing turned on and are looking for shared music; both machines have Apple's firewall turned on and are allowing iTunes sharing.
any ideas?

I think the mystery has been solved, and it involves a factor not mentioned in my original post: there are TWO users on BOTH computers. It appears that you can connect to only one user's music on a remote computer. And it appears that the user who opens iTunes first on the remote computer is the one that is available.

Screen sharing between two computers

I have a G5 in my studio and a MacBook Pro in my house which are connected by Wi-Fi. Both computers have sharing switched on and I can open folders easily between computers. Now, I can screen share from my G5 to control my laptop screen but when it comes to the other way round, my MacBook requests a name and password to share the G5's screen. I have never really understood that when I'm asked for a user password to access a remote computer, does it mean the computer's password that I am currently on, or the one I am trying to gain access to (which seems the logical choice) so I have tried the following from my laptop:
The G5's computer name and it's user administrator's password
My G5's administrator user folder name (which is the same as the MacBook Pro's) and same password,
The administrator's user MacBook Pro's password with the G5's computer name
Try either password plus the hard drive name of the G5 (running out of ideas at this point)...
I know it's not the end of the world, but can anyone suggest a way out of this? All suggestions welcome.

I'm having the same problem screen sharing to a Lion 10.7.3 machine, I get this message.
However, it works just like it used to when I screen share from a 10.7.3 machine to another Mac running 10.6.8.
Any thoughts?

IChat between two computers at home

My mum is disabled, but has a MacBook Pro upstairs; I have an iMac downstairs. Is it possible to set up iChat so that she can communicate with me on our home network, assuming we both have our computers on at the same time? If so, could someone point me to where I could find out more info? Thanks in advance.

I do the same thing in my home with my Grandfather.
You can do it using Bonjour. Just open the bonjour list in iChat.
Problems you will run into:
No audio level control in iChat. You'll have to listen at system volume.
No auto-accept chat feature, so you will have to run back and forth each time you want to chat, or leave it on all the time (which gets intolerable very quickly).
Hopefully Apple will put some attention to those features soon.
