Problems - Sherlock & Appleworks

I have always loved Macs but this one is giving me nothing but problems. Sherlock - can no longer search the hard disk. It just has internet stuff. When I use find, I cannot figure out how to search for appleworks documents - it just pulls up the application. I'm trying to find out how many docouments were originally saved in appleworks.
And every time I try to translate a documenton the new computer, it insists on using appleworks. I like Textedit for most of documents and just use appleworks for some databases. But if I save in textedit, then it tries to open with appleworks and can't translate. Do I need to just trash appleworks? I like it for spreadsheets and databases but I prefer textedit for normal documents.
I would gladly return this computer and use my old one if it were fast enough but I'm three weeks in to trying to get this thing where I can work from it. I wish they would stop adding "improvements".
Anybody else running into these problems. Am I missing something simple? Thanks.

Have you tried using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk?
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them.
If that goes OK, Repair Permissions from Disk Utility located in your utilities folder on your hard drive.
Spotlight, the little blue ball on the far right side of your title bar, can search your Mac till you get Sherlock working. Click on it, and enter what you are searching for.
Cheers! DALE

  • Problems with AppleWorks drawing docs under Snow Leopard

Since I installed Snow Leopard, I've encountered two major problems:
(Problem 1) AppleWorks gets corrupted when dragging a picture file (.jpg or .png) from the desktop into a drawing document. Various dialogs (e.g. "Format : Document..." or "Format : Ruler : Settings ..." or "Options : Object Size ...") become uneditable. These dialogs will display blank boxes instead of the given object settings, and nothing can be entered into these boxes. AppleWorks must be shut down and restarted in order to continue work.
(Problem 2) When a formula (i.e. an equation) has been created in a MathType window, selected and copied, it takes ages to make AppleWorks the active application (spinning rainbow coloured ball appears and keeps spinning for a long while). Thereafter, it takes another century to get the formula appearing in the AppleWorks document when selecting the command "Edit : Paste".
Everything worked still fine under Leopard; under Snow Leopard it's a desaster.
    p.s.
I've produced thousands of work sheets for my Maths teachings using the Drawing module of AppleWorks in combination with MathType (Design Science). Now I'm stuck since there is no decent successor of AppleWorks available:
    * iWork doesn't feature a drawing module.
    * EazyDraw doesn't collaborate with MathType (i.e. no OLE; inserted formulae cannot be edited by double-clicking).
    * OpenOffice doesn't collaborate with MathType.
    * Micro$oft Office doesn't feature a drawing module.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
I don't use AppleWorks as much as I used to & I've never had a need to use MathType, but I just tried dragging 3 images - a .png, a .tiff & a .jpg - to a new AppleWorks draw document. I had no problems resizing them using Format > Scale by percent & I had no problems using any of the other dialog boxes you mention.
Some basic troubleshooting you might try:
Whenever you do an update, it's a good idea to do two maintenance tasks, one for the system (Repair Permissions) and one for AppleWorks (delete preferences). (Thanks to Barry for this way to format this very common answer.)
To Repair permissions in 10.4.x, launch Disk Utility, found in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder, click on First Aid, then on Repair Permissions.
To delete AppleWorks’ preference files, go to HD > Users > Library > Preferences. Find and delete the file com.apple.appleworks.plist. Find and open the folder AppleWorks in this Preferences folder, then delete all of the enclosed files (with the exception of the Button Bar Preferences if you have customized the Button Bars). AppleWorks will recreate the preference files as it needs them. You should do this step anytime AppleWorks crashes or you force quit it.
The slowness is likely the "Recent Items bug" & it has been around since AppleWorks 6 was released in March, 2000. It can make it appear that AppleWorks has frozen or failed to launch. The user tip by Dale Gillard, AppleWorks slow? Spinning ball appears?, explains a lot.
Could you send me a copy of one of these worksheets? Perhaps I can see if I can easily duplicate one in Pages/Numbers/Keynote. Even though iWork doesn't have a draw app, all of the apps do have basic drawing capabilities.

  • Problem with AppleWorks documents when connecting via ftp to my server

When I connect over the internet using ftp to my mac mini server (using OS X server 10.4.10) from my iMac G4 (using 10.4.10) all my AppleWork docs will only appear as .bin instead of .cwk.
If I download one to my G4, it will try to open using stuffit expander but cannot be opened. It comes up with “An error ocurred attempting to expand name.bin unspecified Stuffit Engine internal error” Error #17999
However Microsoft Word docs show correctly and can be downloaded and opened without problem.
When I try directly on the server or try from any computer on the local network conected to the server, everthing views correctly and can be opened.
Could it be to do with any settings on the server when connecting by ftp.
    Thanks for the help.

One problem still remains that when I download minicad files (which uses OS 9) they show up as .exe and will not open or recognisable by the programme
I imagine the file is transferring without a suffix and your computer is trying to guess what it is; hence the .exe. Delete this and append the suffix for the correct program and it should open (or use File>Open within the program).

  • Problems using AppleWorks 6 into OS 10.5.4

I was able to transfer my old Appleworks6 files onto my computer. I can open the files fine, for the most part. However
How do I install Appleworks6 into the Harddrive? Is it stands now it only opens when I click on the icon of a AW6 file.
One problem, for some reason the tab of a file I open will read in Dutch or some other strange language. I can't imagine how this happened since I did not tamper with any of the other language choices.

You must have it installed somewhere, either on your startup disk or on a disk which is networked, or the files wouldn't open. The application lives in the 'Appleworks (language)' (probably 'Appleworks (International English') or perhaps 'English US' or something like that)) folder in your Applications Folder.
If you want to transfer it from another computer you should copy this folder over, not just the application (and you should delete the original to stay within the terms of the licence). You also have a folder called 'AppleWorks User Data' and a file called 'AppleWorks Button Bars' in your Documents folder.
I don't know how the Dutch is getting in: one would expect this only if installation had been carried out from the Dutch installer. There isn't a language option in any one version of AW.

  • Problems with AppleWorks Update

I too am having problems with AW on my new Macbook. I was getting repeated crashes, so I removed AW, then reinstalled it from the DVD. It was still crashing whenever I tried to hit spellcheck, or even tried to save and close the document. I went to support and got the 6.9 updater for leopard. But the updater keeps showing the message that there is something already in the place of the updater?
AW has always been rock solid on my emac, 10.5.2 is running on both macbook and emac, but it's on macbook with leopard that is driving me nuts. Help Anyone?

Removing AppleWorks & reinstalling does not fix corruption causing & caused by crashing. The corruption lies in AppleWorks' preferences which are stored separately for each user. See this user tip for more information.

  • Problem opening Appleworks

I'm using an iMac, running OS 10.5.8. I recently got rid of a very old Mac computer that had Clarisworks on it. I now can't open all the .cwk files that were on that machine. I read online that Appleworks should be able to open them. However, when I try to open Appleworks 6 on my iMac, it looks like it's trying to open, but then doesn't. I don't get an error message or anything... it just doesn't open.
So... I have two problems. Basically I want to open and resave the .cwk files. And it looks like I need Appleworks to do that. But I can't seem to open it. Any ideas? Thanks.
    Julie

What version of AppleWorks 6 are you trying to open in OS X? You need at least 6.2 as before that AppleWorks is a Classic application.
AppleWorks IS ClarisWorks & the extension remains .cwk. AppleWorks is the name Apple gave ClarisWorks 5 when it took it back "in-house" at version 5.0.3 around 1998. AppleWorks 6 will open ClarisWorks 5 & earlier files except that the last version, AppleWorks 6.2.9, may not be able to open all ClarisWorks 4 or earlier files. Any other version of AppleWorks 6 will open them. Pages & Numbers open AppleWorks 6 word processing & spreadsheets, respectively. Word for Mac can usually open AppleWorks 5 & 6 word processing. Some users can open AppleWorks spreadsheets with Excel, I can't. Keynote can open AppleWorks 6 presentations. The third-party application, EazyDraw, can open AppleWorks draw documents. For any other file type, the only application that can open them is AppleWorks.
Your problem with updating may be that you haven't downloaded the correct updater for your installation of AppleWorks 6. The error message means it can't find a copy of AppleWorks for that updater to update. The most common reasons are:
    1. The language of the updater doesn't match the language of the installed version of AppleWorks 6. This particularly applies to the two English versions.
    2. The application has been moved. The folder containing AppleWorks 6 must be named AppleWorks 6 AND be in the first level of the Applications folder.
Since AppleWorks was designated "end-of-life" it is difficult to find the updaters (especially the US/North American) on Apple's site. Here is the page of links I have for the 6.2.9 updater. The first has a link to the North American updater in the upper right & links to other languages further down.
As for troubleshooting your installation of AppleWorks 6 it's best to start with two maintenance tasks, one for the system (Repair Permissions) and one for AppleWorks (delete preferences). (Thanks to Barry for this way to format this very common answer.)
To Repair permissions, launch Disk Utility, found in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder, click on Repair Permissions.

  • Problem upgrading Appleworks 6.2.9

Aparently when I installed Appleworks I used the US Canadian version. The only upgrades use the term "International English" --
Do I need to re-install International English to upgrade Appleworks?
(My spreadsheet is acting weird, the horizontal bar appears shadowed sometime + other small irritations that require "work arounds")

    Hello
You can find AW629/628 updaters for 15 language versions in this page.
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/appleworks629formac.html
Note that the hyperlink for North American English version is titled as '15.8MB' in 'Download Details' part at the top right corner of the page, while others are given in the list in the middle.
    Hope this helps,
    H

  • Conversion problem from AppleWorks document

I have a number of documents in Appleworks format that I have opened in Pages and then saved as a Pages document. I viewed and worked on them several times, but now when I open them, some of the images are thumbnail size and some have changed places with others. I went back to the original AW document to go through the process again and the same thing happens after saving and reopening.
Am I missing something about those images? I can't place them from a media file as they exist only in the original AW file, so what am I to do? I have tried closing the file and reopening it, but the same mistakes are there.
    Any ideas?

    Hi Scott,
Is this happening while exporting the reports or while viewing?
However, if it is while exporting then you can use this with Crystal Reports XI (version greater than 10) by manipulating the
    ExcelFormatOptions.ExportPageHeadersAndFooters
    Hope it helps!
    AG.

  • Problem with Appleworks updater

trying to use the updater to 6.2.9 it refuses to execute giving the message: "the default location for this install could not be found. the install will be cancelled".
Appleworks is in the Applications folder and nothing special has been done during any install so all should be in the correct place....
Absolutely no idea what to do next....

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
The error message usually means it can't find a copy of AppleWorks for that updater to update. The most common reasons are:
    1. The language of the updater doesn't match the language of the installed version of AppleWorks 6. This particularly applies to the two English versions. There are several websites with links to incorrect updaters. The UK Apple site in particular has been known to point to the north American updater for quite some time. The most reliable links are on this page where you can choose the appropriate updater for your AppleWorks 6 installation.
    2. The application has been moved. The folder containing AppleWorks 6 must be named AppleWorks 6 AND be in the same folder with its support folders. The second part of my user tip, AppleWorks has stopped working correctly, explains more.

  • Problems with Appleworks

Have noticed recently that I find it very hard to open appleworks on my IMac. It takes ages, and once I open up a database or WP file, all I get is a multicoloured version of that little spinning wheel. Any thoughts? I've tried to re-install the original disk and there is no improvement.. Is it something to do with memory?
    IMac G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hello
Nothing to do with memory but with the "Recent Items" folder.

  • Appleworks problems

Started having problems with appleworks a day or two ago. Began when I tried to insert cells into a spreadsheet. Couldn't do, application quit. Got message on screen something like "application quit" with dialog boxes "reopen" "close or "report" I reported after closing, reoponing several times..
Peoblem has burgeoned since. Tried deleting particular file, emailing duplicate from other Mac computer. Same issue, won't open, same message. Now looks like many of the appleworks files have been deleted.
When i try to open appleworks, seems to be trying to connect to internet. Getting dialog box titled "web connection status: web progress; appears to be trying to load various internet locations, but always says can't open. Seems to be repeating same sequence of opening over and over..
Have tried shutting down machine, forcing quit, doesn't clear problem. Any idea what might be issue here??
    thanks,
    Billy

Welcome to the AppleWorks Forum Bill.
You should be able to fix this issue by deleting your AppleWorks preferences.
I believe the 'connecting to the Internet' issue is caused by the Web tab in the Starting Points window. That is, when AppleWorks starts it displays the Starting Points window. If the Web tab is currently selected AppleWorks immediately connects to the Internet to download Newsletter and Template info.
You can fix this problem by deleting AppleWorks preference files. This will cause AppleWorks to forget which tab is selected and just default to the Basic tab.
Here's how to delete the preference files:
    1) Go to Macintosh HD > Users > (your account name) > Library > Preferences. Find and delete the file com.apple.appleworks.plist.
    2) Find and open the folder AppleWorks in this Preferences folder, then delete all of the enclosed files (with the exception of the Button Bar Preferences if you have customized the Button Bars).
NB AppleWorks will recreate the preference files as it needs them." (Thanks to Peggy and Barry.)

  • AppleWorks 6.2.9 - Layout problem

    Hi!
The DB document was created in Claris Works years ago.
Now I have a problem to resize layout canvas. *http://xs219.xs.to/xs219/07373/629.png*
Im trying to resize as shown in Help. There is no double arrow at the end of boundarys. I remember there was a box Body wich can be moved, but is missed. Tryed with Click -Cntr, Opt, Cmnd keys, etc., but nothing.
The layout cant be resized in Apple Works 6.2.9, but in Claris Works 5 too.
But in Browse mode I can see all canvas/page. *http://xs219.xs.to/xs219/07373/639.png*
    Need to add more fields.
Any help will be very, very appreciate! Thanks!

That is odd, especially since it also doesn't work in ClarisWorks/AppleWorks 5.
If you're running ClarisWorks 5 in Classic or any version of OS 9, there are some display anomalies that the AppleWorks 5.0.4 update fixed. However, if you truly are running ClarisWorks 5, it has to be version 5.0.2 or earlier. It takes both the AppleWorks 5.0.3 & 5.0.4 updates to get to 5.0.4.
As for the problems in AppleWorks 6 in OS X, it might be some corruption in the database itself. Databases are much more prone to corruption than other AppleWorks file types. Some easy troubleshooting might help.
Are you having a problem with any other database or with AppleWorks 6 in general? Deleting the AppleWorks preferences can help general AppleWorks 6 problems.
I'm guessing you saved the database as an AppleWorks 5 file from within AppleWorks 6 & then opened in AppleWorks 5. Did you ever try opening that file again in AppleWorks 6 without having opened it in AppleWorks 5? This can sometimes strip some minor corruption.
Do you have an older backup of this database when it did work? If so, make a copy of it & then use it to build a current database. You can delete all of the records in the copy & drag the icon of the problem DB onto the open window of the copy. Or you can just copy new records not in the old DB from the new one & paste them into the copy.

  • Appleworks 6.0.4 Problem

We have an iMac (Powermac 2.2). Installed OSX 10.2 approx 5 weeks ago with multiple CD's. Problem with Appleworks 6.0.4. APW works fine in Classic 9.2. Can create & save/modify/spell check documents. Macpaint ok. But, cannot transfer documents & macpaint items or attach to emails in OSX?
I copied APW 6.0.4 to OSX Dock. Can create new documents but no spell check? Macpaint will not work. Documents saved in OSX are showing up in an "Auto Save" folder in Classic 9.2. Cannot re open files. Message box- "This file was not closed properly, and a newer version is available. Open the newer version?" About a dozen document files saved in APW6 OSX now have the big "A" on them & will not open. Message box says "deleted" or "can't find volume". Help! What are we doing wrong?
    Two Seniors citizens.

Mac savvy friend came over today. I had downloaded Appleworks 6.2.9 Updater. Followed notes "Important Information About the AppleWorks 6.2.9 Updater". Ran install. Checked Classic 9.2.- APW 6.0.4 now upgraded to 6.2.8. Checked OS10.4.4.- APW 6.0.4 now upgraded to 6.2.9. MacPaint program now ok!
Followed Forum Tip Notes " Appleworks 6: Main Spell Dictionary Not Installed- Error Message". Located Dictionary, chose etc. Spell Check & Dictionary now work in both Classic & OS10.4.4.!
Checked " ALL File Types" and found all missing files except for 7 which had migrated to Auto Save Folder in Classic & been deleted.
    Many thanks for your help.

  • Appleworks format problem 10.6.2 Leopard to Snow

I am having a problem with Appleworks document format. I just Upgraded from Leopard to Snow.. 10.6.2 yesterday. So far the only problem I have had is whenever I go to Document to change page margins the boxes come up blank and if you type in a margin number it says "Invalid Number".
If I close Appleworks and re-open it then the document works for a while. But boxes go blank again in margins and Scale by Percent.
I am assuming this is a Leopard to Snow upgrade problem for I never had this problem before.
How do I connect with Apple support so they can get this glitch fixed. Boy, I hope that this new system is not fraught with problems. I have downloaded all new Updates as of this morning.
MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.6.2)

Whenever you do an OS upgrade, it's a good idea to follow up by repairing permissions. Launch Disk Utility, choose your startup drive, First Aid, and Repair Permissions.
Since the problem affects AppleWorks, I would also delete the AppleWorks preferences files.
Go to yourname > Library > Preferences
Locate and delete the file com.apple.appleworks.plist
In the same Preferences folder, locate and open the folder AppleWorks.
In the AppleWorks folder, delete the two preferences files and the two cache files.
If you have made extensive changes to the Button Bar, or have no issues affecting the Button Bar, leave the Button Bar file as is. Otherwise, delete this file as well.
AppleWorks will create new copies of these files as they are needed.
While you're doing this maintenance, you should do one more task—clear out Recent Items.
Go to yourname > Documents > AppleWorks User Data > Starting Points > Recent Items.
Delete all or most of the items in this folder. These are aliases to the files named, not the files themselves. Deleting the aliases has no effect on the actual files, but does allow AppleWorks to run faster.
    Regards,
    Barry
PS: If this issue affects software other than AppleWorks, you may want to post a similar question in one of the Mac OS X v10.6.x (Snow Leopard) forums and or Provide OS X feedback directly to Apple.

  • Several problems due to appleworks 6.2.9 ?

i am a long year user of appleworks. (clarisworks). however on my macs (with either 10.5.5 or 10.4.11) i encounter since a couple of months the following problem which is perhaps caused by applework 6.2.9....
problem 1: after booting the computer and starting apple textedit or microsoft 12 i get some low memory (word) and access privilege (textedit) warnings. in fact i can' save and textedit document on any place at my harddisk.
solution 1: after i have quit either word of textedit i just start up appleworks and immediately quit appleworks. now i can use both textedit and word without any problems.
(btw i have 2 GB machines where i must force quit word 12 after the low memory message. with 4gb machines i can "normally" quit word).
problem 2: after booting the mac and starting appleworks i want to save a new document. but then i sometimes get the message: "the file is locked or already in use"
solution 2: quit and restart appleworks
analyzing and tracking the cause of the problem i did till now:
    - deleting any trace of appleworks prefs files
    - repaired permissions with apple disk utility
    - deleted font caches with cocktail.
    - running daily, weekly and monthly scripts in cocktail.
    - diagnosed fonts with linotype fontexplorer x; no conflicts were found !
    questions:
    1) any suggestions ? i first thought it had to do with any software update or leopard, but the problem also occurs with 10.4.11
    2) where does applework keep its font menu cache when prefs are set to "font menu in actual fonts" i can not find such a file anywhere

I think you have problems that are not particularly related to AppleWorks. I'm not sure why you are starting up AppleWorks just to quit it. It does not appear that you are actually using AppleWorks as you say you are using TextEdit & Word. AppleWorks is an integrated productivity program (word processing, spreadsheet, database, draw, paint & presentation modules), it is not a utility to fix or maintain Apple computers. I do not see how AppleWorks is causing problems.
There are some AppleWorks-related things you can try more because it won't hurt than that I expect it to accomplish anything. As always, create a new user account & see if the problems persist.
You said you have deleted AppleWorks preferences, but I find that many users don't find all of them or don't delete them all at the same time. See this user tip for a more complete explanation.
AppleWorks is actually an OS 8/9 application that was carbonized to run in OS X & it does not deal with fonts the way most OS X programs do. AppleWorks builds its fonts list when it is launched. Pre-OS X AppleWorks created a fonts list in the System Folder but I don't find a similar file in OS X. AppleWorks does create caches for each user who launches the program & that folder is found in HD > Users > (your account) > Documents > AppleWorks User Data. This entire folder can be deleted.
AppleWorks has been known to have problems when there are a lot of fonts installed. It was believed that more than 150 fonts was a problem, but I've had over 250 installed for several years & have not had a problem with AppleWorks. I would use FontBook to validate fonts & to look for duplicates. One font that was known to be corrupt was Bauhaus 93 installed with older version of Word. The version included with Word 2004 (& likely 2008) is not corrupt.
